"I think that the best way to stay ahead of competitors is to keep your projects as simple as possible while remaining innovative. People want simple, easy products, which they can understand. What I've seen from your competitors lately is that they overcomplicate their products. I appreciate that Thomson Reuters remains true to its mission of simple yet effective solutions."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $55,000 per year, and I would like to earn slightly higher in my next position, as I have additional certifications since my last salary negotiation took place."

In many states, it is now illegal for hiring authorities to ask about your current earnings. A question like this will give the interviewer a solid idea of what you are hoping to earn. When you change positions, you want to see an increase in wage. Most interviewees will typically aim for a 7-15% increase for each time they change jobs. This range offers room for negotiations with the new company. This percentage increase reflects economic inflation, the unique skills you bring to the table from the last time you joined an organization, and growth in responsibilities. What does the word 'innovation' mean to you?

"To me, innovation means presenting a new idea or making an existing idea better. It's important to be innovative in the workplace, but often it's a misunderstood concept. An example of when I was innovative was when our company was facing budget cuts. I suggested that we begin to operate as though the cuts were already made, in an attempt to preemptively save funds. The concept worked well, and we were able to eliminate many unnecessary expenditures."

The term 'innovation' is often overused in business these days and has now become a buzzword that many people don't fully understand. The interviewer would like to know what you feel innovation indeed is. Include an example of a time when you have witnessed an innovative change in the workplace, or when you have exercised creativity.

"I encourage my team to be innovative by asking the impossible of themselves, and their coworkers. We will get together once per week and bring up situations that we think are out of our scope and then reverse engineer these ideas to see how we could go about putting them into action. To me, this is being innovative in the workplace."

Tell me about your relationship with your previous boss.

"I had a very healthy relationship with my previous employer. She was easy to approach, and we would bounce ideas off of each other quite often. I would sum it up as a relationship lead by strong mutual respect."

The interviewer would like to know about your relationship with your most recent employer. Be sure to remain positive, even if the experience wasn't. Avoid talking about any previous drama and do not speak poorly of your employer. Keep your answer short and respectful.

"My previous boss and I got along well. We had very different interests, so we did not spend a lot of time chatting, but our work interests were aligned, and we respected each other."

Tell me about your experiences giving presentations in front of large groups.

"In my last two roles I have been responsible for regularly presenting to my team of 43 staff as well as to our entire warehouse team of over 200. I have taken a couple of Toastmasters sessions which helped a great deal. I am a confident public speaker."

Public speaking can be intimidating! Did you know that the fear of public speaking is the #1 phobia? It comes ahead of the fear of death and the fear of spiders! It is okay to find public speaking a bit intimidating but do assure the interviewer that you are capable of communicating well in front of large groups. Have you taken any courses or training in public speaking? Perhaps you have so much experience that it comes second nature. Assure the interviewer that you are capable of giving presentations. If you have given presentations, you can also mention the topic, what the setting was, and to how many people you presented.

"Presenting to large groups is a big part of successfully rolling out important communications to teams organization-wide. I have experience preparing the deck to be presented to ensure it is simple and thorough. I utilize different communication techniques to make a presentation fun, interesting, and engaging."

How would you describe your work ethic?

"I am a very dedicated and loyal employee. I saw on your website that you describe your company as honest, transparent and you go the extra mile for your clients. My work ethic is the same. I am honest, flexible, and come ready to work hard for my employer every day."

"I would describe myself as excited to learn, driven towards growth, and someone who executes. I fully stand behind the Thomson Reuters trust principles of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias. Tell me about a time that you failed. How did you get back up again?

"One of the bigger perceived failures that I can think of was not graduating as soon as expected, with my University degree. I encountered a few personal factors that pushed my graduation date back one year. It was a bit embarrassing at the time, but truth be told, I am thankful that I could complete my degree at a comfortable pace. I finished with excellent grades as well."

We all fail at things from time to time. There is no need to be ashamed of defeat. Instead, what the interviewer is looking for is evidence that you can bounce back from perceived failure. Give an example of a time when the outcome was not what you wanted it to be, but you were able to recover. Perhaps you were better off in the end, or you learned a valuable lesson.

"A few months ago our group had a marketing campaign that completely flopped. Our team took full responsibility for the disaster, and we broke down each component of the project until we knew where we went wrong. I could have done better by further breaking down the goals of the client, and what their target audience truly was. We re-did the campaign and the second time around; it was a major success."

What is the most significant achievement you have on the horizon?

"I have some great accomplishments on the horizon including the launch of my biggest clients' digital marketing strategy later this month. This account is the biggest that I have worked with, and it's a fascinating campaign. With that said, I look forward to joining your organization and working with large clients like this more often."

When you show that you have goals and achievements on the horizon, you are letting the interviewer know that you put thought into your career and what you bring to your employer. Employees who do not have goals set just beyond their reach are typically disengaged and unmotivated. This achievement does not need to be complicated. It can be as simple as finishing a beautiful Powerpoint presentation, finishing work-related coursework, or reaching a sales target.

"On the horizon for me right now is finishing this quarter, top in my company. My sales goal for Q2 was $65,000, and I am currently at $98,000. I seek to tip the scales at over $100K in sales. I love competition so being top of the pack in my organization is very exciting to me."

If your current company shut down today, what would you do to adapt quickly?

"If my current company shut down today I would tap into my network, call everyone I knew, and look for a company that needed someone with my skillset. I wouldn't let it get me down, and I would certainly hit the ground running in my job search."

The interviewer would like to know more about your ability to adapt and thrive, in stressful situations. This question is hypothetical, so you'll likely need to use your imagination when answering. Show the interviewer that you are capable of adapting to a tough situation.

"That's a tough question! I have been with my company for so long that this is the first role I have applied for in ten years. If I lost my job today, I would call in a few favors from industry peers. I have a strong network and a good reputation in this industry so I wouldn't be too worried about finding work quickly."

How do you handle a larger than average workload?

"When I have a large workload on my plate, I do not stress over the tasks that are in front of me. Rather, I make a simple plan of which tasks are a high priority and which tasks are a lower priority. The higher priority tasks, I complete first. Through this system, I can focus on my tasks individually, rather than stress out by the multitude of tasks ahead of me."

Thomson Reuters is a multi-billion dollar company so you can bet you will never run out of things to do when helping the business run smoothly. The interviewer wants to know that you can handle the workload required of you in this position and that you will not become overwhelmed when workloads unexpectedly increase. When workloads increase, stress levels do too. How do you react? Here are some suggestions on how to handle a large workload:- List your tasks and prioritize them - Think of which jobs add to the company's bottom line, and start there (Closest to the money!) - Exhale. "I first take a step back and make a list of all the deliverable work that I have. Then, I prioritize the list by deadline and ease of completion. I always try to hit the easy tasks first and get them off my to-do list. Feeling like I am making progress keeps me motivated."

How do you present bad, or disappointing news, to your team members or clients?

"I don't believe anyone enjoys delivering bad news; however, it is part of what I need to do - sometimes on a weekly or even daily basis. When I have news to share that I know will disappoint someone, I will sit down with that individual, one-on-one, and express that I know how much the situation meant to them. I will then highlight to my team member or client what steps went very well, and make a plan with them to either try again or come up with an alternate plan."

The interviewer is interested in knowing your style when it comes to delivering less than pleasant news. Some people have trouble facilitating difficult conversations, so it's essential that you display your ability to be uncomfortable while maintaining a position of authority. Give an example of a time when you had a challenging conversation and explain how you were able to deliver the news professionally.

"Before I deliver bad news, I like to prepare my self for every possible reaction from the person to whom I am delivering the news. I will make sure to have a reply ready for someone who reacts angrily, someone who becomes emotional, and someone who may have a 'cold' reaction. By having a variety of 'conversations' prepared, I can enter an uncomfortable conversation with confidence."

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What is top of mind when it comes to filling this role? Also, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

"I agree that research is the backbone of a strong project. Without it, we miss important details and waste time. I like to research before starting a project so that I can lay out a plan and understand the potential hurdles as well."

Talk to the interviewer about your work habits and how you prefer to approach a new project. If you have a sense of how Thomson Reuters prefers to approach their work you should discuss that method. For instance, if the interviewer tells you that they prefer extensive research before beginning a project, that is your queue to talk about your excellent research skills.

"Although there are some instances where jumping right it may be required, I always prefer to research before I being a project. Rest assured; I would always follow the preferred methods at Thomson Reuters, should I be hired."

"I have signed non-disclosure agreements in the past; although I am not currently under one. I see the importance of agreements such as this and am most willing to comply."

Signing a non-disclosure agreement is very common in the information media industry. If hired, you will likely become privy to trade secrets, pending patents, and other innovative projects that must remain confidential. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to sign an agreement. If you are currently under non-disclosure or non-compete agreement with your present employer, now is the time to discuss that.

"I am most motivated, on the job, when tasks are well organized, and the vibe is positive. I value strong teamwork and good leadership."

"One of the reasons I was so excited to interview with Thomson Reuters is because of the endless growth opportunities you appear to offer your high performing employees. My biggest ambition is to be awarded a management role in the next 3-5 years. More specifically, the job posting for a Lead Consultant in your Professional Services department piqued my interest."

Have you researched Thomson Reuters enough to know how their internal hierarchy works? They have a variety of departments and management levels, offering you choices when it comes to carving out your career path. Talk to the interviewer about your career ambitions related to the role for which you are applying.

"What interests me most about Thomson Reuters is that there are so many options when it comes to career growth. Ideally, I would like to earn my way into a team lead role, then a division manager position in the digital management department. Eventually, a CDO (Chief Data Officer) level role would be ideal. Of course, I understand that this will take many years of dedication and hard work."

In your opinion, what is the most exciting collaboration between data analysis and artificial intelligence in the past year?

"I have taken a keen interest in how artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms have been working together to optimize business workflows. The result appears to be better strategies for enterprises surrounding people management, effective operations, as well as culture and engagement."

If you are up to date on the trends and happenings between data analysis and AI, you should have no problem answering this question. Discuss an exciting collaboration, project, or product release that you have heard of recently. Because this is an open-ended question, be careful not to ramble on.

"I recently read an article in Forbes on the top machine learning programs to watch. I was especially intrigued by a company called DataVisor which uses machine learning to uncover financial data issues, helping to protect against bank fraud, and other financial based criminal activity."

What is your favorite data management tool at the moment?

"There are many amazing tools available for data management, and new options coming out all the time. Right now, I appreciate Power BI from Microsoft. It is a powerful business analytics service, and I love the interactive visualizations and intelligence capabilities. I love to learn about new choices in data management tools. Could you share with me your current favorite?"

This question offers an excellent opportunity for you to discuss the tools that you use in the workplace, and also to learn about new tools of which you may not be aware. Discuss which data management tools are your favorite at this time and if you are comfortable, as the interviewer about theirs in return.

"Collibra is a tool that I currently use daily and one that has made my job significantly easier in many aspects. The tool is related more to data governance, allowing me to access and control data in a way I never thought possible. Are you familiar with the program? I would be happy to hear of any other recommendations you have as well."

Explain qualitative vs. quantitative reasoning.

"When researching, I find that quantitative data is best to gather first, as it's more fact-based. After gathering the quantitative data, I can bring in qualitative research, since it is more related to the reasoning behind the hard data."

Consulting is all about making judgments and best-case scenarios based on logic, analysis, and reasoning. The interviewer would like to see that you understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative reasoning, and when each is best used. Qualitative reasoning is best for problems related to processes, controls, and diagnosis. Quantitative reasoning is more related to the gathering of facts, and hard data. Keep your reply simple, and easy to understand.

"Although I can use quantitative and qualitative research together, there are important differences to keep in mind. Quantitative research is objective, while qualitative research is subjective. There needs to be a balance between the two in every piece of research."

"Qualitative reasoning is best for problems related to processes, controls, and diagnosis. Quantitative reasoning is more related to the gathering of facts, and hard data.Quantitative research is objective, while qualitative research is subjective."

What is your approach to working with a large amount of information/data?

"I learned a technique years ago from a data science blog to take a three-tiered approach when working with large amounts of data, and information. I evaluate, define, and control. What this means is that I first evaluate the type of data that I have. I can then define and categorize it, allowing me to ensure it is organized and protected. From there, I can control its use and distribution. How do you prefer large amounts of data be managed here at Thomson Reuters?"

When you work in data management, you will be required to handle large amounts of data and information, keeping it all organized and easily accessible to yourself, and other project stakeholders. The interviewer would like to know that you can successfully juggle and organize it all. If you would like to know more about Thomson Reuters's process, you can certainly ask.

"When managing large amounts of information, I create lists, and collections, so that the information is easy to find. I am aware of keeping the data stored as flat as possible. I also archive old information regularly so that it is not a distraction. I want to learn more about how Thomson Reuters prefers the management of large amounts of information and data."

Are you LEAN Six Sigma certified?

"I have looked into LEAN Six Sigma training and would be very interested in expanding my education to include this esteemed certification. There is a course beginning next month, and I am happy to register if you feel it would be the value added that Thomson Reuters is looking for."

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that teaches how to eliminate waste of all kinds, within an organization. The education certifies you as an expert on efficiencies in the workplace. When it comes to Six Sigma certifications, there are a variety of levels which you can obtain. You begin with white, and work your way up to yellow, green, and black, with the highest option being MBB (Masters' Black Belt). Share with the interviewer if you are Six Sigma certified. If you are, discuss how far you have taken your certification. If you do not have your certification, show enthusiasm for the idea and express that you are open to expanding your professional knowledge and training.

"I am currently earning my green belt in Six Sigma. My goal is to earn my MBB level certification within the next five years. I have learned a great deal about business process and streamlining. I fully believe that every person in the management consulting and implementations sector should become white belt certified, at the very least."

In your opinion, is data a true asset for a business? Why or why not?

"Since acquiring data comes with a significant cost, I believe it is fair to say then that data is an asset. Data can give precious insight into a company's operations, financial strength, future scalability, and more. By properly analyzing data, a company can open itself to millions in growth. For these reasons, I absolutely consider data to be a true business asset."

Many companies still struggle with the idea that their data is a real asset when it comes to their business. The interviewer would like to know that, if a client asked you about the importance of their data, that you would give a well-thought-out and appropriate response. Share with the interviewer why data is indeed an asset.

"It is interesting to me that this idea is still in question with some of the clients with which I work. I recently read a study claiming that 36% of businesses lack the tools needed to extract and analyze the information and data that they have. When a client asks me if their data is valuable, I always reply with a hearty 'yes!' It is expensive to gather data, but also more costly to never analyze your data."

Part of our business is in big data, which is continuously changing as new technology and products enter the market. How do you keep up-to-date on these changes?

"Keeping abreast of the changes in the data field is important if a company wants to remain competitive. Companies need to know what technology is offered in the industry, so they don't lose their clients to the competition. I remain informed through various online resources such as industry blogs, journals, and community forums. Also, conferences and seminars are also informative sources to learn about changes in the industry, and I do my best to attend these regularly when budgets allow. Also, it is important to ensure that knowledge is shared across departments within the company. I have found holding sessions such as 'Lunch and Learns' help with the internal knowledge sharing."

With the high level of competition in the data industry, companies are continuously introducing new products and services to remain relevant. Thomson Reuters would like to know that you will be proactive in educating yourself about the changes in the industry. Talk about resources you would use to remain informed to updates and changes in the data industry. Also, communicate that you understand the importance of remaining current on the continuously evolving industry.

"Keeping informed of the technological advances of the data industry pushes companies to remain innovative themselves. I believe companies remain competitive by improving on the ideas of others. I remain informed through continuous communication with my network. Whether through email, online communities or social media, including LinkedIn and Twitter, I read articles from industry journals and information shared by my network. I believe it is important to be a part of an active network of professionals involved in data within their companies. Also, when my schedule allows, I attend networking events where I continually meet new industry professionals."

How does data drive a business' success?

"When I take a hard look at the many uses of data, I see that data is collected in a plethora of ways to determine the success of a new product launch, competitive analysis, or patterns that occur, which may not be seen by the human eye. In my career, I have the most experience using data to help drive employee productivity and onboarding solutions which can save a company thousands, if not millions, of dollars."

Data-driven decision making is becoming a more significant topic every year. Companies can leverage data analytics to determine: - Productivity - Competitive analysis - How, when, and where products are used - Customer demographics - Pattern analysis - Business growth Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you feel companies can best use data to drive the success of their business.

"Data can drive every aspect of a business' success if approached and utilized correctly. In my experience, I have seen that companies underutilize what a full data analysis approach can do for them. Analytics programs should be set up for marketing, sales, employee productivity, product efficiency, competitive analysis and more."

We offer services in areas such as asset optimization, customer experience, finance transformation, and risk mitigation. In which field of data management do you specialize?

"Of the five years I have spent in data management, approximately three of them are working directly in the field of risk mitigation, and two with finance transformations. My experience lends well to clients who need to reduce financial risk and optimize their profits. When it comes to risk mitigation, I am especially well versed in planning, implementation, and progress monitoring."

"When you combine my degree in communications, as well as my experience working with clients on data related to their services, team, and culture management, I would say that my specialization is in the area of customer experience and workforce optimization. With that said, my skills are highly transferable, and I can make an impact on Thomson Reuters's other areas of focus."

What is pervasive business intelligence, and what does it mean to you?

"To me, pervasive business intelligence means that information is widely spread through a group of employees, allowing them to have access to business data and intelligence, freely. I believe that PBI is an excellent practice as it fosters a positive workplace culture and helps employees to feel empowered."

Pervasive business intelligence, or Pervasive BI as it's often referred to, is a business' practice of empowering employees by allowing open access to information, and essential responsibilities around decision making. This practice is known to generate beneficial results for companies and also supports a positive company culture. Thomson Reuters knows that by making it easy for you to find information, the better you will be able to do your job. Talk about the term Pervasive BI, and what it means to you.

"I was recently reading an article on pervasive business intelligence, where a popular survey showed that over 80% of senior employees and leaders wanted data and business information to be more accessible to them, in the workplace. The concept may be a new conversation to many, but it's an important one."

What do you know about Thomson Reuters's competitive position within the data analytics industry?

"The data industry is constantly changing with new technology that makes tools more user-friendly. There is strong competition in this industry with companies continuously innovating to offer 'the next big thing' to their clients. Thomson Reuters offers user-friendly interfaces that allow its products to be used across a client's company and not only by its data analysts, making data readily available to those who are looking for answers. I would say that Bloomberg and S&P Global are Thomson Reuters's strongest competitors as their products strengths include a user-friendly interface highlighted in all marketing communications. Their goal of making data accessible to all parts of their clients' company is similar to that of Thomson Reuters."

How do you stay up-to-date on current events, and general news topics? Which news sources do you follow?

"I like to diversify where my news is coming from, ensuring that I have a well-rounded view of the topics at hand. My go-to resources include Reuters for trusted news, Fox for sports, and BBC for political news pieces."
