"My chosen career was helping people at exactly the point they were least capable of censoring themselves or giving back. I stopped needing thanks from my patients. It's not that I don't need positive reinforcement. Everyone does. But I made a point to find it elsewhere instead of expecting it from my patients. Nowadays, I make an effort to expressly thank the people I work with when they do a good job. I focus on being grateful to be allowed to see private, raw, emotional parts of people's lives. And I make work-related goals I can achieve for satisfaction."

If you could expand your knowledge and expertise in any healthcare service area, which would you choose?

"If I could choose any area of healthcare services to be a subject matter expert in, I would choose gastroenterology. When my brother was born, he had numerous intestinal disorders and spent a lot of time in the Texas Children's Hospital. I was amazed by how many stomach and intestinal disorders there are and would love to learn more."

"I can be productive in most work environments as long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

"When we spoke earlier, you mentioned you want to improve patient care and compassion at this facility. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly if hired by Texas Children's Hospital."

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal to make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer your impact goal should you be a successful candidate. "If hired today, my first goal is to meet my team and supervisor and see what needs to be accomplished first. As a leader, I collaborate with others to make an impact. I do not immediately enter a new job and try to change everything. I would see what's working on the unit and what isn't and make a plan based on my observations."

In the healthcare industry, there are many emotions in a day. Have your emotions ever gotten in the way of your productivity?

"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree. I consider myself kind-hearted and open. A healthcare career can be emotional at times; however, I choose to focus on the positives. For instance, if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way."

The interviewer wants to know if you consider yourself to be an emotionally driven person. Talk to the interviewer about your emotions and if they have ever affected your productivity at work. Remember, almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, but there are other ways that you can describe yourself that have a more positive connotation. If you are passionate, you could choose to refer to yourself as: - Expressive - Communicative - Open - Unreserved - Warm Hearted

"This is a great question. I think the right answer is, 'of course, but not for long!' We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you give someone a cancer diagnosis. It is professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story; it's the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."

Rate your problem-solving skills from 1-10. How do you justify your rating?

"I rate my problem-solving skills as an 8/10. I am not always as efficient as I would like, but my problem-solving skills are above average. My supervisor and coworkers will attest to my fast reflexes when a problem arises and say that I remain calm under pressure."

The interviewer wants to know how you would rate your problem-solving skills. Of course, you want to give yourself a strong rating; however, you must remain realistic. Everyone has room to learn and improve! Be sure to justify your score as well.

"I would give my problem-solving skills a solid 8.3 on a scale of 10. It seems weird to give myself something like a .3, but I think of it as an 83%, which is a B- teetering on a solid B. It's a solid grade, with definite room for improvement since I'm certainly not perfect. I'm quick to take action and figure out a solution as I go, but sometimes I could benefit from taking a moment to pause and reflect or gather other contributors before taking action. That said, I generally get the best outcome possible when faced with a challenge."

We seek to hire employees with strong problem-solving skills. When did you successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?

"I worked in a clinic where the primary population was low-income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. They had 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are critical skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace. Talk about a time you were creative and proactive and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

"In my most recent position, we had a consistent problem with employees arriving late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, I rewarded my employees for coming to work 10 minutes early. I also added a bonus for every month with zero sick days. Ultimately, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. In the end, the bonus cost us less money than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was successful, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to work very well."

"In addition to meeting all of the must-haves for this role, I bring additional skills such as fluency in Spanish and American Sign Language and a dual degree in communications and nursing. I look forward to adding these skills to your already amazing team."

"In my previous position, I had a coworker who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated coworker created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks on group projects. It didn't take much time before our department head noticed this individual was slacking. In most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize some folks who are difficult to please. Think about that one person at work who is hard to please or tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and their relationship with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone, and be sure to end your response on a positive note.

"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he walked into the facility, employees would quietly announce that he was in the building so that everyone could prepare for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were rough. However, he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."

Healthcare companies require strong organizational skills and attention to detail. How do you ensure that your work is properly organized and highly accurate?

"I am a highly detailed person, and I thrive on having a high level of organization in my day. This organization includes my scheduling, paperwork, and more. If I am offered a position with Texas Children's Hospital, I will always be organized! I utilize my Outlook calendar and set alerts for deadlines and important activities. My documentation is strong as well."

The success of the healthcare industry thrives on the accuracy of information and organization. Talk to the interviewer about your accuracy and organization in your day-to-day activities. Perhaps you use a particular app or software. Maybe you are a pen-and-paper person. Whatever your method, express that you are successful in organizing your day.

"I'm a bit of a nerd. I carry around a notebook and write down important facts if I think there is a chance I will forget them. But this is usually just for transitions. Every clinic I've ever worked in has its own way of communicating and recording facts, so I put time and attention into using the system the people around me are using. That way, it's easier to transition care, and the patient has all their info in the same place. My notebook saves me when I'm swamped, but I try to be efficient and put info directly into the [group record/EMR/chart] when I can."

"Every morning, I listen to X Podcast because I find the information fresh and valuable. In addition to this podcast, I also subscribe to a couple of industry blogs. I greatly value the information shared among fellow professionals. What resources do you prefer to stay on top of industry trends and changes?"

Employers expect employees to stay up-to-date on their respective fields, and today's technology makes it reasonably easy! List several ways you receive your industry knowledge and stay on top of trends. Tell the interviewer about those daily email updates you receive from professional organizations, conferences you attend, and seminars you have taken.Lastly, ask the interviewer what resources they refer to for industry trends. That question can start up a great conversation, and you may learn a thing or two.

"I am an avid fan of Google alerts! I receive an email with related information whenever there is a major headline about the healthcare industry. In addition to this, I also subscribe to a couple of medical-related journals, such as the Child Health Journal and the Journal of Pediatrics. These journals give valuable information about working with pediatrics. And, my former employer provided in-service and continuing education courses that kept me current in the industry."

Tell me about yourself.

"I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I am a recent grad from Columbia University and have spent the past 12 months traveling the world. It was the best experience I could have given myself, as I learned so much from seeing how the rest of the world lives. I returned to the US last week and started actively looking for work. I am looking forward to getting into the routine of a career again."

"I am an avid triathlete and have traveled to 10 countries in the last eight years to compete in various races. I am a competitive individual and enjoy keeping fit. In between my training, I completed my nursing degree and graduated from UC Santa Barbara six years ago. My biggest goal is to get hired by Texas Children's Hospital and learn more about working with the pediatric population. In the next two years, I will receive my Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration and plan to promote to an administrative position."

Our Financial Assistance Policy and Admissions Policy determine if patients are eligible for free or reduced-rate medical services. What are your thoughts on free or reduced rates for specific people?

"I understand this is a touchy subject for some. I am glad to see places like Texas Children's Hospital that try to assist those in need of healthcare. Many people don't know where to go or how to apply for State or Federal medical assistance like Medicaid. Education is key, and I appreciate Texas Children's Hospital's effort to provide that education to patients and families."

Despite the various types of State and Federal assistance programs available today, many people, especially children, remain uninsured or underinsured. At Texas Children's Hospital, requests for hospital financial assistance are evaluated through the organization's charity care policy and, subsequently, by the hospital's charity care committee, comprised of representatives from clinical and non-clinical areas. The interviewer is not asking a simple opinion question; they are looking for compassion for others. A positive attitude in your answer will go a long way.

"Free or reduced rates for specific people are very much needed. Many people are experiencing hard times and cannot afford quality healthcare. I appreciate that Texas Children's Hospital offers this service to families in need, which is one of the main reasons I applied for this position."

Texas Children's Hospital was initially looking for someone with five years or experience in a similar role. Considering you have just two years, would you be willing to accept this position at a lower salary?

"I understand I do not quite meet the qualifications of experience you are looking for and am willing to be compensated in adjustment to that fact. However, I look forward to proving my worth to Texas Children's Hospital in hopes of being considered for the median salary for the role."

The interviewer wants to see if you are willing to earn your way up if they do not offer you top compensation. Discuss with the interviewer what you would expect for compensation if offered this position. Remember that you have two years of experience preceded by years of medical training. Even though you do not have five years of experience, you need to be compensated fairly for your knowledge and education. "I would be happy to earn my way to the top compensation level if required. I assure you that, despite my being shy of your desired experience by a couple of years, I am a top performer, and you would not be disappointed in my performance."

In order to work for Texas Children's Hospital, you must be able to pass a full criminal background check. Do you consent to a full background check?

"Yes, I have a clean criminal record and am happy to comply with any background check you require."

Working in the healthcare industry means being in contact with vulnerable people, children, pharmaceutical drugs, drug-related equipment, confidential information, and other areas of sensitivity. Assure the interviewer that you are able and willing to pass a complete background check. If you have a criminal record, you must disclose this.

"I understand that it's part of the job. But I want to be up-front, I have done a full background check before, and there is a possibility you will see a charge for possession of marijuana in the check. It was several years ago, and it's no longer an issue for me because I've made significant changes in my life to pursue this career. But I don't want you to be surprised by the information. I'm happy to answer any questions you have."

Why should we not hire you?

"There is no reason you should not hire me. I meet all of your intern requirements, and I am energetic, dependable, and have a strong work ethic. If you choose to hire me for the internship, you will not be disappointed in my performance."

The interviewer hopes to hear that there is no reason not to hire you! Tell the interviewer you are a great employee, and confidently share that there is no reason not to hire you. You might wrap it up by sharing that you are patient-focused, have a proven employment record, and have excellent references.

"I cannot think of one reason you should not hire me. You are looking for someone with at least three years of experience, and I have seven. You also mention that your ideal candidate preferably has a bachelor's degree and specialized certifications, which I have. I am also working towards my Master's Degree in Nursing, so I will exceed your minimum requirements. I have excellent references and a proven history of providing exceptional, compassionate care. I assure you that you will not be disappointed if you hire me for the position."

In our Adolescent Medicine department, we specialize in helping overweight or obese 10 -24-year-olds improve their health and lose weight. Have you ever counseled patients on healthy eating?

"Previously, when we had patients who needed weight or nutritional services, we did referrals to the in-house nutritionist. I like the idea of having a department that focuses primarily on adolescent weight issues. Teaching children at a younger age about healthy alternatives for food choices and activities will greatly improve their quality of life later on."

About one-third of adolescents are overweight or obese. Texas Children's Hospital's Adolescent Medicine department not only helps patients learn healthy eating habits and monitors weight loss but also evaluates and treats weight-related medical problems, many of which will improve with weight loss alone. Share any experience you have, even if it seems insignificant to you.

"Having battled with adolescent obesity, I am pleased to see a program like this at Texas Children's Hospital. People who have never fought the obesity battle do not realize how disheartening it can be and the many things that go hand-in-hand with it. Until I got control of my weight, I also suffered from depression issues related to my weight. I have been able to share my personal story with patients through the years to encourage them that a healthier lifestyle has many positive impacts on health overall."

Would you describe yourself as a compassionate person?

"Yes, I am very compassionate and have been my entire life. I was always the one to bring stray animals home and give my lunch to those less fortunate than me. I believe you need to be compassionate and empathetic to work in this field and feel honored to have the opportunity to provide compassion to my patients and their family members."

The hiring manager wants to see if you consider yourself a compassionate person since Texas Children's Hospital values helping others improve their health and well-being and care deeply about those they serve. Texas Children's Hospital has an AIDS and Retrovirology clinic that provides care to HIV-infected and exposed children. Do you have any experience working with HIV+ patients?

"I read about the AIDS and Retrovirology clinic on the Texas Children's Hospital website. I think it takes great compassion to work with infants and children affected by such a cruel diagnosis. I have never worked with HIV or AIDS patients exclusively, but I have had some patients who were diagnosed with one or the other. I would enjoy working in a specialty like this because I love learning and seeing how medical advancements are achieved and then put into action to provide better care."

The Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) and Retrovirology Clinic provide comprehensive primary and specialty medical care and social services to HIV-infected and -exposed infants, children, and adolescents. The clinic participates in the education of US and foreign health professionals and clinical research in pediatric AIDS and currently operates programs in Houston, TX, Romania, Mexico, and Africa. Being an educational facility affords potential employees many opportunities for growth and career advancement. If you do not have experience working with HIV patients, share any experience you think may complement a role in this specialty.

"At my previous employment, I worked in an infectious disease clinic three days a week and saw many HIV+ patients. It is amazing how many new strains of viruses are discovered and the relentless enthusiasm with which medical providers seek cures. I would love to see this clinic and hear of any opportunities for employment there are."

Tell me about an organization or group you have contributed to outside work.

"I have volunteered with many organizations since I was eight years old. My mother taught my brother and me the importance of giving back to the community, and I continue to volunteer to this day. I am involved with the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Red Cross."

They understood how emotional being a hospice care provider can be and always supported me when I had a difficult day or a death. They taught me the true meaning of compassion."

"I had never heard of Angelman syndrome until I saw a pamphlet in your waiting area. It appears to be a very complex disorder. I think having a clinic with a multi-disciplinary team in one place to care for these patients is great. It's stressful enough for parents to have a child affected by what most would consider a minor illness. Something like this is undoubtedly overwhelming, and being able to get all of the necessary care in one place has to help alleviate some of the medical-related stress."

Angelman Syndrome is a complex neuro-developmental and genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system. Texas Children's Angelman Clinic is a multidisciplinary program that includes several specialty services: genetics, neurology, physical medicine, and rehabilitation and developmental pediatrics. Angelman Syndrome is less common than other genetic disorders. If you have not heard of the disorder, don't hesitate to say so. You could share your interest in genetics, if any, or any experience with other disorders.

"I briefly heard of Angelman syndrome in school. One of my classmates did a case study on it. I have to admit, I don't have much experience with genetic disorders, but if an opportunity were available to become part of this team and learn, I would be interested in the opportunity to do so."

We are home to one of the largest pediatric cancer and hematology centers in the U.S. Would you be interested in working in this specialty area?

"I knew that Texas Children's Hospital had a large service population for the cancer and hematology center, but I did not realize just how large it is. The number of cancer cases in the United States alone is profound, but I am shocked at how many children are affected. I worked in an adult oncology center for a while and enjoyed what I did. I think a transition to pediatric care would be something I would like to hear more about."

The pediatric cancer and hematology center at Texas Children's Hospital treats children from more than 35 states and 26 countries. This specialty area is not for the faint of heart, though. If you are interested in this area, share that interest. On the other hand, if this is not an area you think you would like to work in, this is the time to tell the interviewer. Honesty about what you want to do helps an interviewer decide what job openings will be the best fit for your skill and goals.

"When I was 21, my dad passed away from lung cancer. It was one of the most trying times of my life. Although I have always wanted a career in healthcare, oncology is not something I have wanted to do, not yet anyway. I would be open to volunteering with patients in that area who need a companion to visit with them. However, I don't know if working with cancer victims daily is something I am quite ready for."

"The more I learn about Texas Children's Hospital, the more excited I am about becoming a part of this awesome team. I don't know about Fragile X Syndrome, only that it has been classified as one of the causes of autism. I would like to learn more about this specialty area."

Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic condition causing intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges, and various physical characteristics. It is also the most common single-gene cause of autism worldwide. While many people are familiar with autism, they are not as familiar with the specific conditions that lead to the disorder, such as Fragile X Syndrome. Questions such as this are not meant to disqualify a person from a job if they are unfamiliar with a diagnosis. Most interviewers use these questions to introduce candidates to the specialty areas their facility offers. If you know the syndrome, share it. If you do not, state that you are unfamiliar, but do so with interest, which is what the interviewer is looking for.

"I worked in an autism center for a little over a year and had some patients diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. It is amazing how so many things have been linked to autism. I am glad to see places like Texas Children's Hospital creating specialty areas to address this dreadful diagnosis."

"I have always loved children and knew I would choose a career that involved children. At one time, I considered teaching, but I also love medicine. The team works to provide developmental, educational, and therapeutic interventions to support children and families as they adjust to the hospital experience. "Having a Child Life Department is an excellent idea! I know how difficult it is for some parents to help alleviate their child's fears and anxiety about being hospitalized or receiving treatments. Having a team that focuses on easing these frustrations is great! I would love to hear more about this department and what it offers."

"If I could expand my expertise in any healthcare service area, I would choose anything within primary care. That is one of the reasons I applied to your company. Your focus will be a great fit for my long-term career goals."

Plus, my team leader generally has a valid reason for their decision that comes with years of experience. So, it is an opportunity to learn from others' experiences, even if it was a different decision than I would have made."

What part of your healthcare career brings you the most stress?

"To be completely transparent, I probably bring myself the most stress because of my innate desire to be the best. I strive for perfection too often, which causes undue stress on myself. I manage this by focusing my energy on productive activities that are good for my career."

Stress in the healthcare industry can often be a regular part of the day-to-day work experience. Talk to the interviewer about the most stressful aspects of your career. Ensure that your answer does not include a factor that would make you appear unfit for the position. "The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when my patients do not adhere to taking their medications or following their treatment plan. If they followed my recommendations, they could live a fuller, healthier life. To decrease my stress levels in this situation, I do all I can to explain why they have a treatment plan and how following it will get them better results. I communicate clearly and concisely so there is no misunderstanding. I leave it to my patients to do what they feel is best for them."

"I find that it's pretty simple to balance life and work with the right company. When I enjoy what I do, it doesn't feel like a chore. When I am at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and rest before the work week begins. My favorite activities are yoga, gardening, and listening to music. When I consistently take care of myself and spend time with my family, I feel better able to handle work stressors and keep calm during high-pressure situations."

"I feel that the best way to earn my coworkers' trust is to be helpful, always do what I promise, and be honest with them at all times. Strong relationships have to be built on these principles."
