"I work hard to develop open and honest relationships with everyone I work with. In fact, I'm still in close contact with a few of my old supervisors and co-workers because we built relationships based on trust. I think you'll find, based on my references, that everyone I've worked with feels I'm a trustworthy employee and individual."

It is easy to say that you are trustworthy and honest, but it's best if you can back it up with a review or words from a previous supervisor, co-workers, and friends.

"My friends and family rely on me heavily because I am trustworthy and honest. They can count on me to be straightforward with them and depend on me to be there when it matters least or most."

How do you deal with uncomfortable situations?

"I have had my share of awkward situations, especially having raised two kids! In the workplace, if an uncomfortable situation arises I tend to face the issue head-on, but in a tactful way. Sweeping things under the rug rarely helps. I have no problem being open and communicating with my team or colleagues if I am not feeling comfortable in a particular situation."

Often, our work environment holds the possibility for awkward or tense situations. It can be difficult to know how to respond when you have a coworker who is moody, or when faced with a disagreement with a client or executive. The interviewer wants to know that you can keep your cool in situations like these. If possible, use an example of a time you've had to navigate a difficult situation.

"I try to avoid conflict, but I have a high tolerance for discomfort. I've learned to try to let the people in question sort it out but have no problem rolling up my sleeves and diving in to help mediate the problem."

What type of work environment allows you to be the most productive?

"I understand that your work environment is very collaborative. I come from a similar environment and found that I could be very productive with the 'buzz' of a team around me. While I can be productive in quieter environments, I definitely thrive in a fast-paced environment. "

"I really like the variety because it keeps me on my toes, and gives me the opportunity to learn additional skills while exercising my current knowledge. I am also able to work in a routine but do prefer to switch things up from time to time."

Tell me about your greatest work accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was being awarded Key Contributor for the quarter as a Marketing Manager in my previous role. After increasing our social media engagement month over month and planning a series of successful brand events, I was recognized by the company as one of the top performers. It made me feel like all that hard work was noticed and recognized by the company, in addition to making the clients happy. "

Talking about your greatest accomplishment will give the interviewer a strong idea of where you place your values. What is your current salary?

"While I'm not comfortable discussing my current salary at this point, I am looking in the range of 50k to 60k when I make my next move."

How do you think your early career will help you succeed in this position?

"I have been working since I was just 14 years old. My first job was as a shop hand for my father, who was a mechanic. I had to sweep, clean, greet customers, and order parts. It was a great way for me to get my hands dirty, and I was taught excellent customer service skills from an early age. Everything that I learned during that time has helped me to stay grounded and humble in my career."

The project aims to develop a brand campaign that educates philanthropists on the organization's benchmarks and goals. We're doing this by developing case studies, brand storytelling, and unique partnerships. I understand that your organization takes on a variety of clients in the not-for-profit, as well, which is one of the reasons I'm interested in TapAd."

The interviewer would like further insight into the types of projects you find the most interesting and rewarding. Briefly discuss a project you're excited about. "I often have multiple projects on the go that are very interesting and exciting. At the moment, I am revamping the online presence of a small-sized toy company. It's been a lot of fun working with a budget that allows me to exercise my creativity in new ways."

Why do you want this job with TapAd?

"I am excited about this opportunity because I've worked on the agency side of advertising and a huge aim of mine is to deal more in analytics and growth marketing. I believe I can do that at TapAd as part of this team, especially after reading about all the work you've done with OMD. I have the agency insight and skill set to excel, but I know I'll gain significant skills working on the other end of the spectrum."

Both of my parents were teachers, and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy coaching and leading others so, any tasks in my current career related to these skills always make me happy."

"I am delighted with the direction my career has taken. If I could change anything, I would perhaps have furthered my education to include a unique focus; however, I have no regrets!"

"I feel that I will be successful. I've had experience working agency side on branding campaigns and frequently handled the data analytic reporting for my previous company. I can clearly see your vision and have already drafted some great ideas on how I can help you get there. It was great to see that working with you helped increase their attribution rates."

"I agree! This industry is ever-evolving, and it's crucial to stay up to date on the new trends in the market. To keep up to date, I subscribe to AdWeek and Communication Arts Magazine and listen to Zach Rodgers's AdExchanger podcast. While I'm always staying on top of the news, these are the three resources I use the most. I'd love to learn more! Are there any resources or news organizations that the team here uses to stay up-to-date?"

Talk to the interviewer about a few ways to stay in touch on new trends within the marketing industry. Knowing that you keep in touch on the latest trends will show the interviewer that you are engaged in this industry and willing to invest your time into learning more. "I have a Google alert set up for a variety of industry-related keywords that include marketing, sales, search engine optimization, search engine marketing, and content development. I learn a lot from absorbing these small bits of news on a daily basis."

"That's exciting! I'm always looking to expand my skillset and gain more knowledge. I've always wanted to take additional courses in copywriting and content development, and I also have an interest in coding that I've started to explore with a few online classes through Coursera."

"Continued education is a benefit I'm interested in as I consider companies I want to work for. If I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge in any area of marketing, I would choose Consumer Behavior Insights. It's great to hear that you offer it! There is so much to learn when it comes to consumer spending and buying patterns- it's fascinating."

Tell me about your experiences giving presentations in front of large groups.

"In my past 2 roles, I have been responsible for regularly presenting to my team as well as a warehouse staff of 200. I have taken a couple of Toastmasters sessions which helped a great deal. I am a confident public speaker."

Public speaking can be intimidating, so assure the interviewer that you can communicate well in front of large groups. Include mentions of classes you've taken or your experience presenting to groups big and small.

"Presenting to large groups is a big part of successfully rolling out large communications to teams organization-wide. I have experience preparing the deck to be presented to ensure it is simple and thorough. I utilize different communication techniques to make a presentation fun, interesting, and engaging."

What questions do you have for me?

"What would be responsibilities and expected contributions be within the first six months if I were to be hired? What does the day-to-day look like for this role? What are some of the unique challenges this team faces when trying to get things done?"

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the questions asked are not mundane or redundant. You want to ensure the questions are personalized to you, the position you're interviewing for, and the company as a whole. You don't want these to be questions in which you can easily find the answers online.

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What is top of mind when it comes to filling this role? In addition, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

When you receive negative feedback, or push back, from your team members, how do you respond?

"Working in a creative field, I'm used to getting feedback, whether negative or positive. Generally, I try to see things from someone else's perspective and understand their feedback. If I still feel that I don't want to change the project, I do my best to communicate why I want to keep things the way they are and how I believe it will help the project succeed."

What are some unique challenges you've faced as a manager and how did you overcome them?

"In my previous role as Content Producer, I was in charge of a team of designers that frequently had to meet hard deadlines with very little lead time. Unfortunately, one of the designers frequently missed deadlines and had trouble communicating and understanding changes that needed to be made with design specs. After going through a process in which I tried to coach her to success, we came to realize the role just wasn't a good fit for her, and unfortunately, we had to let her go."

When it comes to management roles, it's important to show that you can handle difficult situations with your direct reports. From letting them know when they've made a mistake to handling internal conflicts, highlight a situation in which you've managed a difficult issue.

When have you taught someone important skills or knowledge in the workplace?

"In my last position as marketing manager, I had one coordinate working for me who was dipping their toes into the marketing world. I felt that part of my role was to serve as a mentor and teach them what they needed to succeed in their role and delegate some of my tasks to them as they grew more confident. This allowed them to gain the skills they needed to get a promotion, and eventually, they were promoted to another team as the marketing manager there. "

Interviewers want to hear that you have experience teaching or mentoring other employees one-on-one. You may have taught a new hire all of your department's standard processes. Or perhaps you worked in a management role and helped one of your employees get a promotion. All of these scenarios are great examples to draw on.

"Absolutely! In each of my two previous roles, I have been tasked with leading a small team. I have worked on everything from appointment setting and overcoming objections to price negotiations with those respective teams. What's more, I always look for an opportunity to connect with the new folks on the team to ensure them that I can be a resource to them."

Tell me about a time when you took the initiative to improve work related procedures.

"I was able to present and implement one specific change in the office this past year. It was a recycling program that I felt was very important, even for our smaller office. We had significantly less waste after my initiative was implemented, and I enjoyed seeing others take pride in helping our environment."

Talk to the hiring manager about a time when you took the initiative in the workplace. Consider examples where you developed new processes or improved upon ones that were already in place. Ensure you give concrete examples that relate to the position you're applying for.

"Last month my supervisor asked me to take our existing sales training package and improve it. My goal was to make the system more engaging for recruits. Once we implemented my ideas, we increased our new trainee retention rate by 16%. I was quite proud of what my creativity could do!"

What do you think our company's biggest challenge is?

"While I think that TapAd has a great reputation for working with, and elevating, large agency brand campaigns, I think there is a big missed opportunity when it comes to the small business sector. I have a lot of experience working with Google My Business and other small business advertising platforms, and I feel it's an area I could help out in."

"Knowing the industry, my best guess would be that the biggest challenge is the same challenge any marketing company faces, and that is keeping up with the fast-paced changes in marketing, advertising, and social media."

In your opinion, what has been the biggest breakthrough in social media marketing as of late?

"With the growing popularity of TikTok and Instagram Reels, there's a huge discovery piece on social media right now that brands like Red Bull and Guess Jeans are tapping into very well. The short burst videos make it easy to engage with consumers quickly. As we move in the short-format video direction, there's a lot of ways to capture a quick 15 seconds of consumers' attention and allow them to discover something new."

The interviewer is asking this question because they would like to know that you keep up to date on social media trends. The more you know, the more apparent it is that you have a genuine interest in this industry. To an interviewer, this gives added security that you are in this career for the long term. Discuss a recent social media campaign or trend that caught your attention, what you think was great about it, and what you learned from it.

"I would say that the biggest change that social media marketing will see in the next few months is the decline of visible organic content and the extra push for paid or boosted content to have priority."

"It's no secret that United Airlines has been in a public relations nightmare lately. When I look at their brand, I can't help but think that they should be spending marketing dollars on spinning their mishaps into positive ones to change the perception that people currently have of them. They're a well-known and popular brand, but they could gain a lot by changing the narrative around those negative experiences."

The interviewer is asking this question because they would like to know that you keep up to date on current branding trends. The more you know, the more apparent it is that you have a genuine interest in this industry. To an interviewer, this gives added security that you are in this career for the long term. Briefly discuss a well-known brand. For a balanced answer, give your opinion on one thing the company could improve on and one thing they are doing right.

"If I could choose any brand to improve, I would choose the Red Lobster or other family-style restaurant that still rely on outdated messaging in their marketing. The glamour shots of food with the traditional families sitting down for dinner don't catch the eye of the discerning customer any longer. I would first change their commercials to include more diversity. Then, I would encourage hiring a social media manager whose tweets and posts would rival notorious brands such as Starbucks, Wendy's, or McDonald's."

If you had $50,000 to build your own business, what would you do?

"If I had $50,000 to build my own business, I would open up a community center in my neighborhood that offered inexpensive childcare, cooking classes, and other life skills programs. I am passionate about volunteering and see a strong need in those particular areas."

The interviewer will be able to learn something new and unique about you through this question. Avoid answers that would include building a business that competes with the hiring company, but let your creativity shine through. If there's something you're passionate about, this is a great time to showcase that.

"I would choose to invest the $50,000 into an existing business in an industry that my spouse has an interest in. I love what I do for a career, but she has always wanted to be an entrepreneur."

What sources do you look to when solving complicated problems?

"When I am faced with a complicated problem, I will look to the resources that my current company has provided me. If it's more of a moral dilemma vs. a knowledge-based dilemma, I will ask my supervisor for his thoughts and opinion since I value him as a mentor and expert in our industry."

The interviewer wants to know that you can think outside the box or even ask for help when stuck on a complicated problem. Maybe you look to a mentor or boss for advice. Perhaps you have handbooks, manuals, and systems you turn to for help. Offer some relevant examples based on your industry. For instance, working in marketing and advertising, you may turn to some of the trade magazines or executives in companies you've previously worked for. Show the interviewer that you are knowledgeable and equipped to handle these types of scenarios. The answer is almost always in there.

"To solve a complex issue, I will reach out to a manager or mentor from a previous role to ask them how they've handled such issues in the past. I am always ready to dive back into our handbook, but these types of scenarios are often not covered there, which is why I really value a human, experiential approach. I know that there are so many folks in the industry who have so much to teach me and have probably already 'been-there-done-that,' so I love to utilize them as a resource."

What would you do if a client asked you about a product or service and you were unsure of the answer?

"If I had a client ask me about something that I didn't know enough about, I would absolutely find the answer for them before giving a false answer. I am okay with admitting when I don't know something, and I love to learn new things. Of course, I would find the answer quickly by asking the appropriate person or finding it within the company's internal resources."

With so many complex services and products at TapAd, they want to ensure that potential clients get the right information. Use this as an opportunity to showcase your independent thinking and initiative.

"Whenever I do not have an answer, I never say 'I don't know. I always reply with 'I will find out.' If I do not know the answer to something, then I take it as an opportunity to learn so that I have the answer the next time around."

What about marketing and advertising provides you satisfaction?

"I got into advertising because I've always enjoyed working closely with brands to help them tell their story to consumers. It's the storytelling piece that fascinates me and keeps me engaged with this career path. I know TapAd relies on both analytics and storytelling, and I'm excited to see what skills I might be able to add to my experience while working here."

"My satisfaction always comes from a job well done. I am self-led and disciplined, so my satisfaction truly comes from within."

Do you have difficulty working in a team environment?

"Personally, I thrive in a team environment. I see team projects as an opportunity to learn new skills, collaborate on ideas, and build something great!"

Tell me about one of the most rewarding experiences you had working on a team. What made it rewarding?

"The most rewarding teamwork experience that I have had was in my last year of university. We were assigned a project in teams of 4, which accounted for quite a large part of our grade. I believe everyone pulled more than their own weight because so much was at stake. It was rewarding in the end when all of us came out of the project with A's."

Think back on group projects and collaborative opportunities you've had at previous jobs and take note of your most rewarding experiences. If you exceeded sales goals and increased performance, mention those data points as well.

"In my current role, the growth team was responsible for rebranding and redesigning our home website. It was a collaborative effort across the board, from writing copy to designing pages and working with engineers. We came out of it with a bigger and better web page that the entire executive team was happy with."

"The majority of my work experience is with a wide range of clients and personalities. Happy customers are always the easiest to deal with; however, I do have some training in conflict management. Throughout my time in marketing, I've had to deal with high-profile, demanding clients that knew what they wanted and would accept nothing less. While that can be difficult to manage, I believe my ability to be patient, communicative, and open to feedback helps me navigate those personalities."

In the marketing industry, your experience with clients may be widespread. Talk to the interviewer about the range of personalities you have been exposed to. Be sure to appear confident in your ability to handle different personalities.

"I have worked with a large range of personalities in my employment history. I am very well prepared to work with a range of client personalities and do have a strong level of patience."

Being able to think creatively is important at TapAd. If you had a very small budget to work with, what marketing technique would you use first?

"Since I've worked at several start-up companies throughout my career, I'm used to making the most with a small budget. To maximize reach on a small budget, I tend to find that social media marketing works best. You can narrow your demographic down easily, and it's still an affordable way to capture the attention of your core audience."

Discuss some of your favorite marketing methods on a small budget and give some examples of how you've done so successfully in the past.

"If I had a small budget to work with, the first thing I would focus on is building a strong email list for the company or project in question. Email lists are valuable, and in order to create one, I would offer a download, resource, or free product in exchange for the potential email address. Consumers are very drawn to a hook like that."

Which marketing software platforms do you have experience with?

"I have experience with several marketing platforms including HubSpot, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, MailChimp, and Salesforce."
