I use to work at CVS and when I had and unruly customer come at me I stayed calm stayed happy and asked what they needed and if I could fulfill there need I would point them to the nearest manager or assistant.
I had a experience with this person who get really upset. I stay calm and ask them what's wrong and try to figure out a solution.
I havent dealt with and outrageous customer but I have dealt with high tension situations with people before and ive been able to calm the people involved down pretty well.
I havent actually worked, but in Keystone (the leadership program), I had to sell tickets for an event. A lady came up to me to complain because she didnt receive something from last year's event, so I told her I am very sorry for that. That this year it is being ran by different people and that wont happen again. I also told her that I can try to receive those pictures again.
Having never worked before, I can't answer that with an anecdote. However, I can say that if I was in that situation, I would do my best to stay calm. Never try to snap at a customer if you can help it. It only adds fuel to the fire. If things escalate too much, I can always consult my manager. They're the ones that are allowed to disagree with a customer. As an employee, it is simply my job to give the best service possible, and to alleviate any potential frustrations a customer may have.
I talked to them as calmly as possible and would have explain their situation to me. I would do what I could, but if it was outside my jurisdiction I would contact my manager.

When I worked at Mcdonalds, I had a customer come in and say he wanted fresh french fries. Of course all of the french fries we make sure to keep fresh, so I apologized to the customer and offered to remake his fries, and when the batch of fries came up, I gave him the order myself and apologized once again.
