How do keep your own personal judgments and biases out of your interactions with others on the job?

"Growing up in a diverse area like Denver, I've grown to appreciate people from all walks of life and don't hold any personal biases toward any person. As I've grown in my healthcare career, every patient and their story helps me grow into a better person both personally and professionally."

Working in a clinic or hospital setting brings you in contact with people from all walks of life and you must be able to work effectively with any person, no matter their creed, color, sexual orientation or age. Talk to you interviewer about how you value diversity from a personal standpoint and talk about experiences you have working with diverse patients, customers and/or coworkers. How have these interactions influenced you to be a better person and caregiver?

"When I interact with any patient, my focus is to see the world through their eyes so I can truly get a sense for what they are feeling at that given moment. Doing so has made me so much more effective in my job of helping treat them. When I do this, any judgments I may have had about their appearance or attitude get thrown out the window. Over my career, these one on one patient interactions have helped me grow and bring more experience and knowledge to the next patient."

Swedish Medical Center prides itself on treating others as if they were our own family. Talk about a particular patient or customer that you treated like family and how did it help their situation?

"Early in my nursing career, I was working in a nursing home in a rural location and I was caring for an elderly man that had no immediate family in the area. Over time, I noticed a depression in him like no other I had seen before as he saw fellow residents getting visits from family and friends. Knowing he was very lonely, I spent any downtime I could with him just talking, playing board games and talking about life. Right away, I could see a turnaround in his mood and I definitely benefited from the life lessons that he taught me."

Compassionate and empathetic care for patients comes second nature to most healthcare workers. You entered the field because of our desire to help people when they are most vulnerable and this is your chance to showcase this for your interviewer. Swedish Medical Center values the need to treat patients like family. Talk about a particular patient that you went above and beyond with to treat like a member of your own family and talk about how your actions played a part in a great outcome for them.

"Having spent a few years working in an ICU, I've worked with many families of patients that have traveled a long distance to come be with loved ones during a time of need. Last year, a gentleman's son and daughter in flew in from the east coast to be with their dad following a bad auto accident. Knowing that they had traveled, I immediately met with them to update them on their father's health status and prognosis moving forward. Knowing they were looking for a place to stay while in town, I let them know that I could assist them in finding a hotel for their stay and use the hospitals discounted rate for them. On top of that, seeing they flew late in the evening, I offered to run and grab them food for the evening which they graciously accepted. Following their fathers discharge, the son and his wife were extremely thankful and wrote a wonderful thank you letter to our unit director."

Do you think it is possible to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader?

"I think that it is possible to be a great team member, even when disagreeing with the leader. It's all in how you maintain respect for each other despite the difference in opinion. I have always done my part to maintain open and honest communication with my supervisor and I know t"

The interviewer wants to know that you can be diplomatic in the workplace, even when you may not agree with your leader. Show the interviewer that it is possible for you to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader from time to time. Explain that you believe everyone is entitled to their own professional opinion, yet capable of maintaining respect for each other at the same time. Show that even if you disagree with the final decision they make, you support the direction the team is heading.

"I believe that being a good team member is more about attitude than it is about compatibility. You do not need to agree with everyone 100% of the time to be effective in your job. If I have a disagreement, I talk about it with my leader directly and we have an open conversation regarding thoughts and impacts of decisions."

Why do you think you will be successful in this role with Swedish Medical Center?

"I know I will be successful in this role because I have been working in this industry for five years with great training and mentorship. I have a solid understanding of X, Y, and Z (skills listed in the job description). Also, I have all of my updated certifications as outlined in your job description. I am well-prepared for this next step in my career."

What is your greatest weakness?

"I believe I could improve on some technical skills including Excel and Word. Currently I am at a beginner to intermediate level; however, I would be more comfortable at an advanced level. I have enrolled myself in an evening/weekend workshop for the next six weeks. We will see how stellar my skills are after that course!"

Pick a weakness that is not a core skill for this position. You can be candid in your answer; recognizing that you aren't great at something and acknowledging your need to improve. "I know this will come off as cliche, but it's truthful. My weakness is in not delegating. I know what I want to be done and how I want it done, so it's often easier to do it myself. However, it can inhibit my ability to grow. I cannot take on every step of a project; I need to be able to give the task or a portion of it to another team member or direct report, let go of the control and know it will be taken care of. I've spoken with my current manager about it, and we've developed a system where he can call me out on the behavior since often I'm not aware of it. By bringing awareness to it at the moment, I find my propensity to hold onto control has decreased, so I'm certainly moving in the right direction."

Give an example of a time that you involved a patient and their family in the decision making process for their care. What approach did you take and why was including them important?

"Working as an occupational therapist, it is extremely important that I include family members and patients in care planning because their plan always involves life at home, away from my office and care. Recently, I was working with an man that had some significant leg injuries and I was planning for some home modifications to help make life easier for him. Knowing that he had a spouse and high school aged children, I had a meeting with the man and his family to discuss the changes in the home like a wheelchair ramp, a lift system for the stairs and modified bathroom facilities. It was important for me to educate the family on what the changes would mean for them and their home living arrangement. With the plan just under way, the family had nothing but positive things to say about how the changes were helping their husband and father live better around the house."

Swedish Medical Center values the notion of including the patients and their family in the decision making for their care. Talk to your interviewer about the importance a patient and their family can play in the decision making for their care. Talk about a time you did this and explain why the inclusion of the patient and the family made for a great outcome for the patient.

"My career in a pulmonary clinic often involves patients that have made the poor life choice of smoking. I take these patients and their need to quit very personally as I've witnessed two of my siblings pass away from lung cancer. For patients that are smokers and suffering from varying lung issues, I take a friendly but hard approach to educating both the patient and the family to the risks they are taking by smoking. With one recent lady and her husband, I've received several thank you cards from the man thanking me for the stiff approach I took with his wife to convince her to quit smoking. He was seeing a vast improvement in her blood pressure and overall health, even with quitting at the age of 52 after smoking for almost 40 years."

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?

"I am a great problem solver because I do not allow stress to cloud my judgment and mute my sound decision making. I am a keen observer with a great memory which allows me to recall unique solutions or ideas."

Employers want to know that you have a methodical approach to problem-solving. Consider the skills and qualities that help you successfully face problems. Perhaps you have a keen eye for detail. Maybe you can see opportunity when others can only focus on the issue. Share your strengths as a problem solver, and your ability to come up with innovative solutions.

"I believe I am a great problem solver because I am sure to gather as many facts as possible, I look at the problem and its potential solutions from multiple angles, and I am not afraid to make a creative decision that might seem off the beaten path. I also am a very resourceful person that is not afraid to reach out to subject matter experts when critical decisions may fall outside of my wheelhouse."

Talk about a time that you had to give constructive feedback to a colleague. What approach did you take and was it successful?

"Recently, one of my coworkers was not following a new policy that had been rolled out in our organization regarding personal usage of work computers. While a few of my colleagues were afraid to confront the employee when she was obviously playing games online during her shift, I took the approach that I would want others to bring new policies to my attention if I wasn't aware of them. In talking to my coworker, she indicated that she hadn't read about the new policy and thanked me for letting her know. During down times in our unit, games used to be permitted as long as all other work was completed."

Providing and receiving constructive feedback are important things to master to become a better employee and person, no matter the career choice. Your interviewer will be looking to hear that you are confident in your abilities and leadership to help guide others in a constructive way. It also doesn't hurt to throw in that you are receptive to feedback as well. Give a specific example of a time you gave feedback to a fellow colleague. Speak to how important the approach you took was helpful to the situation and talk about the positive outcome that happened from your feedback.

"A few years back, I worked with a young nurse that was struggling with starting IV's on patients in our unit. In assisting with her training on our unit, I could tell right away that the new nurse was stubborn and not open to suggestions from other nurses on how to effectively start IV's in each patients situation. In knowing this, I approached the new nurse and let him know that I was going to be observing the next 10 placements he would make under his own guidance under the agreement that he'd let me give tips and pointers on the next 10 following that one. To ensure patient safety first, the first 10 patients he placed IV's in were fairly easy placements and I was watching him every step of the way without stepping on his toes. For the next 10 placements, he was very open and receptive to my tips. In the end, he wound up being very effective at placing IV's after that just based on a few quick tips from me as an experienced nurse. I think that my approach to observing then teaching worked wonders with this particular person because I didn't come across as a know-it-all trying to change how he worked."

With the ongoing changes in the healthcare services industry, how do you keep your knowledge current?

"Every morning I listen to X Podcast because I find the information to be fresh, and valuable. In addition to this podcast, I also subscribe to a couple of industry blogs. One is ABC, and the other is XYZ. I greatly value the information shared between fellow professionals. What resources do you prefer to stay on top of industry trends and changes?"

Employers expect employees to stay up-to-date on their respective field, and today's technology makes this reasonably easy! List several ways that you receive your industry knowledge and stay on top of trends. Tell the interviewer about those daily update emails you receive from professional organizations, conferences you attend, and seminars you have taken. Lastly, it's a great idea to ask the interviewer what resources they refer to for industry trends. That question can start up a great conversation, and you may learn a thing or two as well.

"I am an avid fan of google alerts! I will receive an email with the related information any time there is a major headline about the healthcare services industry. In addition to this, I also subscribe to a couple of medical-related journals."

Think about a difficult boss, professor or coworker. What made him or her difficult? How did you successfully interact with this person?

"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he would walk into the facility, employees would quietly announce that he was in the building, so that everyone could be prepared for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do a lot of good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."

Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize there are some folks out there who are quite difficult to please. Think about that one person at work who is seen as hard to please. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and what their relationship was with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone and be sure to end your response on a positive note.

"In my previous position, I did have a coworker who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated coworker created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks when it came to group projects. It didn't take much time before our department head noticed this particular individual was slacking. I feel like, in most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

If Swedish Medical Center hired you today, what would you accomplish first?

"When we were speaking earlier, you mentioned that you were urgently seeking to improve the level of patient care and compassion at this facility. I want to offer my strong skills when it comes to building patient rapport and help to improve the satisfaction of everyone that uses the services of Swedish Medical Center. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal on how you will make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer what your impact goal is, should you be the successful candidate. If you want to make an impact with your answer, refer to the immediate needs of the company such as increasing budgets, or improving patient care, for instance.

"If hired, my first goal would be to get to know the entire team that I would be working with and ensuring them that I would be a respectful and accountable colleague of theirs moving forward. Great patient care starts as a team effort and building a relationship with my teammates would be of great importance for me."

Talk about a time you had to utilize teamwork to help care for a patient. What role did you play on the team and how did the overall teamwork affect the outcome for the patient?

"In my current role as a sonographer in a small critical access hospital, our emergency department had a woman come in that was experiencing severe pains during her fifth month of pregnancy. Being on call that night, I was called in to perform an ultrasound after she was examined by the physician and nursing staff in the ED. After my initial ultrasound, I was getting good readings from the baby and the overall health of the baby wasn't a concern at that moment. I ensured the patient that her baby was in great shape and I suggested to the ED team that the patients OB physician should see her right away in the morning. Having access to the docs patient schedule, I scheduled the appointment for the morning. In following up, the patient was experiencing pains from some bad food she had eaten the day prior. Even though mostly a false alarm, I was glad I was able to put the patients mind at east that night."

A lot of times in healthcare, a complex patients requires a team of many people to pull together to ensure a positive outcome for the patient. Talk about a specific example of a time you had to work with a team to provide care for a patient. Your interviewer will be looking to hear the part you played on the team and your willingness to provide your expertise to a larger team effort.

Why is it important to use the AIDET approach with patients? Have you seen first-hand how it can be effective?

"As a PA, I am very familiar with the AIDET approach and use it on a daily basis to help put my patients at east. Any time I enter an exam room to see a patient, I acknowledge them by greeting them by name with a smile on my face while making direct eye contact. I then introduce myself and my role with the organization. As I examine the patient, I be sure to educate them by explaining what I'm doing and give timelines for things like tests to run and follow up appointments that I'm recommending. At the end of the visit, I be sure to thank them for their time. While this approach greatly helps my patients, I find that it helps keep me on track and organized through each patient appointment."

Using open and honest communication falls under the key value of accountability at Swedish Medical Center. If you are not familiar with the AIDET process in patient communication, be sure to familiarize yourself with it prior to the interview and understand why it is important. AIDET is an acronym that stands for: Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you and is used to describe the ideal patient interaction. People receiving care in a medical facility are usually feeling stressed, worry and potentially sadness and the AIDET approach helps put patients more at east with the expectations around their visit.

"Working in maintenance for a large hospital, I've had extensive training on the AIDET approach because of the work I often perform in patient care areas. I fully understand that my presence can be intimidating to a hospitalized patient when they see a maintenance technician enter the room to fix something that could be potentially harmful. By using AIDET, I find that patients become relaxed around me and we often end up striking up a conversation while I work."

How do you stay informed about the organization you work for as a whole and why is this important?

"Working in the lab, it is easy to get tunnel vision and only focus on what effects my direct job. To keep from doing this, I love the fact that my current organization has a wonderful intranet page that discusses the events and changes happening around the organization and I take time each week to educate myself there. As well, our CEO sends out monthly email updates and while a lot of people simply delete that email, I take the time to read it and click on all of the links. Last year, I learned of a change to our patient check-in procedures that would ultimately lead to shorter wait times around the facility. Without someone in our department seeing this, we may not have known this until were were noticing less patients in our waiting area which could have caused questions to arise."

Oftentimes, when working for a large healthcare organization, it is easy to get pigeonholed into your department and not realize the global changes that are happening around your organization. But more often than not, small changes in one part of an organization can have a direct effect on other departments and people without them realizing it if they aren't informed. Swedish Medical Center holds employees accountable for staying in tune to the happenings around the organization. Tell your interviewer how you genuinely care about staying informed about your employer and how you do this.

"As a nurse working in the ICU for a large health care system, it is easy to lose focus on the greater good and focus of the organization. To curb this, I attend the optional all-staff meetings that are put on by our leadership on a monthly basis and make sure I stay up to date on my emails."

Swedish Medical Center supports a healthy work/life balance for all employees. How do you balance life and work?

"I find that with the right company, it's pretty simple to balance life and work. When I enjoy what I do it doesn't feel like a chore. I am always sure that when at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and ensure that I regenerate before the work week begins."

It is essential to keep a healthy work/life balance to prevent burnout. Talk to the interviewer about how you can maintain that appropriate balance for yourself. If you have personal hobbies that keep you feeling fit and refreshed, talk about those things. If you have hobbies that peak your mental wellness or toughness, talk about those as well.

"Outside of work, I am an avid mountain biker and my family takes a lot of vacations revolving around the sport. I find that after a mentally draining week of work, a half day spent biking completely clears my mind and leaves me feeling refreshed and ready for reporting the next week. On top of biking, I love jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles to help keep my mind sharp."

Do you prefer to work in a team based position or individually?

"Whether I am doing an independent project, or working in a team environment, I always give my best. I enjoy the camaraderie of working in a team, but I can be successful working autonomously as well."

In which situation are you the happiest and most productive? Talk to the interviewer about your preference when it comes to teamwork or working individually. Be sure to avoid pigeonholing yourself into one particular scenario (IE: I only like to work by myself). You may work well without the need for much management or direction, or perhaps you are better driven in a collaborative and team led environment. Either way, be honest with the interviewer about your preferences without leaning negatively, either way.

"I have found, in the past, that I work well in an individually driven environment; however, I can certainly be productive in a team-based setting as well."

Patient care requires a strong amount of compassion. Do you consider yourself a compassionate person?

"I understand that compassion is one of the top qualities that I need to bring to the workplace, being in the healthcare services profession. I consider myself a very compassionate individual. I am warm hearted, responsive to my patients' needs, and always empathetic."

To succeed in the healthcare services industry, you should have a solid level of compassion for your patients or customers. Talk to the interviewer about the compassionate qualities that you possess. How would you rate your level of compassion for others?

"I was attracted to the healthcare field at a very young age because of my warm-hearted and charitable nature. My earliest memories are of me providing care to my dolls and stuffed animals and this passion for helping others has continued through my entire life to this point. I look forward to the chance to care for many more patients under the roof of Swedish Medical Center."

Talk about ways that you ensure that you are using company resources in a wise manner. Why is being a good steward of resources important?

"In my job, I ensure that I reduce waste in the amount of paper that I print and only do so when necessary. When looking at vendors for items that we need in our department, I shop around for the best prices on the highest quality products. Any decisions I make on the cost of resources directly influence the bottom financial line of the organization and I do my part to be a good steward of finances and resources."

Any job in the healthcare industry puts employees in front of many, and some often expensive, resources. Computers, medical equipment, medication and many other things comprise the resources that are necessary to provide great patient care and be successful on the job. Using resources in an efficient manner is of utmost importance to Swedish Medical Center to ensure that costs are held in check. The slightest waste can lead to much higher costs. For this question, talk about things you do on the job to ensure that you are using resources wisely and efficiently. As well, talk about why this is important to the organization.

"As a nursing supervisor, I am responsible for the efficient use of supplies and resources in our department. While I prioritize the efficient use of supplies to help be cost-effective for the organization, a much bigger task is utilizing our manpower in an efficient and cost-effective manner. My current employer has led training for leaders around workplace efficiency in the labor pool and I apply these principles to my department. There are times we utilize a flexible staffing model when patient census is low to help save labor costs. I have walked a delicate balance between high census and low census times to ensure we have enough staff to cover the busy times."

What steps would you take to ensure that you present a clean and professional image to our patients and visitors?

"It is important to me maintain a clean and professional image with my patients. With first impressions often lasting a lifetime in a relationship with any individual, I ensure that I come to work each day in clean and ironed attire and with my hair combed and beard groomed neatly."

In the healthcare industry, image is everything to patients, visitors and customers. Because of this, Swedish Medical Center fully expects their staff to present a professional image at all times. Your interviewer will be looking to hear that you take great pride in personal hygiene and wearing appropriate professional attire to the job each and every time you report for duty. Talk about why presenting a professional image is important to those that you work with on a daily basis.

"Working with patients on a daily basis, I pride myself in maintaining a professional image in the workplace because I know that how I look can project how I will interact with people. I want my first impression to a new patient to one of security and trust. I do have an arm tattoo of a bird. Can you tell me the policy regarding tattoos at SMC? With my current employer, I am required to wear long sleeves in the patient care setting and I am fine with doing so here as well."

Swedish Medical Center seeks to hire those with strong problem solving skills. When were you able to successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?

"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was a success, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to be working very well."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are critical skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace. Talk about a time when you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

"I was working in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

At Swedish Medical Center we seek to hire individuals who have ambitions of growing their career. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?

"In 3-5 years I would like to see my career with Swedish Medical Center include a path towards a leadership role. I am very keen on paving a long-term career in the healthcare services realm and would love the opportunity to do that here."

Every hiring manager would like to know that their investment of time and training will pay off. Assure the interviewer that you see this position as a long-term fit. How does this role with Swedish Medical Center fit into your longer-term plans? Be open and honest, but also ensure that your ambitions meet the goals of the organization.

"One of the attractive points of working for Swedish Medical Center is that you care about the growth of your employees. I'm motivated to learn and am looking for a long-term fit. In 3-5 years I'd like to be grounded in the clinic, learn about this site, your patient base and earn certifications that would help the unit advance. Personally, I'd like to get involved in some of the local volunteer organizations. I speak Spanish, and I have an interest in urban outreach so it would be nice to do something formal in that context...health-education or fundraising."

Have you ever been involved in ordering medical supplies, maintaining inventory, or other types of health care related administrative duties?

"I have experience in ordering medical supplies and maintaining inventory. I fully understand that there is an art to being properly organized when it comes to the availability of supplies. For medical ordering and inventory, I have used a variety of software and programs such as ABC and XYZ."

The interviewer would like to know if you understand what it takes to keep on top of ordering medical supplies and inventory. Assure the interviewer that you are capable of foreseeing needs, and making the appropriate action. Highlight your ability to be responsible when it comes to related administrative tasks.

"I fully understand and take pride in my administrative roles working in healthcare. Great patient care depends on more than just face to face interactions. Detailed notes in the EMR, a safe and clean environment and properly maintained equipment are important factors that can influence a patients care now and into the future and I do not take these duties lightly."

It is often said that a career in healthcare is a 'thankless job'. How can we keep you motivated and engaged, even on the days when you feel your work goes unnoticed?

"I am an easily motivated individual, and it does not take much to keep me engaged. I am fully aware that healthcare-related positions can seem thankless. Honestly, the best thanks that I can get is a pat on the back now and then. The majority of my motivation comes from simply helping people."

The interviewer would like to know how they could continue to motivate you - even on the hardest of days. Do you need to have verbal recognition? Are you motivated solely by the success of your team? Talk to the interviewer about how you have stayed motivated in the past.

"My chosen career was helping people at exactly the point they were least capable of censoring themselves or giving back. So, I stopped needing thanks from my patients. It's not like I don't need positive reinforcement. Everyone does. But I made a point to find it in other places instead of expecting it from my patients. Nowadays I make an effort to expressly thank the people I work with when they do a good job. I focus on being grateful to be allowed to see private, raw, emotional parts of peoples lives. And I make work-related goals I can achieve for satisfaction."

If you could expand your knowledge and expertise in any area of healthcare services, which would you choose?

"Having worked as a nurse in surgical services for my entire career, I have really come to enjoy working with pediatric patients. Because of this, I would love the opportunity to expand my skills even further in pediatric care. These patients tend to bring the warmest feelings in my heart when I know that they have a great outcome due to the care we provided."

The interviewer would like to dig deeper into your true areas of interest when it comes to healthcare services. They want to know that your passions align well with what Swedish Medical Center is offering. Talk to the interviewer about the areas of healthcare you would like to focus on most, and then tie that information in with what the position at Swedish Medical Center would be offering you.

"I'm interested in research. One of the things that attracted me to working with your company is your ongoing community-based research collaborations. I'd be curious to hear if the [clinic/hospital/program] had any needs in this area. Is this something junior staff can be involved in?"

Healthcare service companies require strong organizational skills and attention to detail. How do you ensure that your work is properly organized, and highly accurate?

My notebook saves me when I'm swamped, but I try to be efficient and put info directly into the [group record/EMR/chart] when I can."

"This question does hit close to home as I've seen more and more of the young staff on my unit doing this in the recent years. It almost makes me want to go back to the time where cell phones didn't exist! When I have witnessed staff playing or texting on their phones when there was other work to be done, I have simply walked up to them and reminded them of the cell phone policy my employer has. For some, they are not aware of the policy and simply put their phone away. For a few others, they will put it away only to have it back out later. For these people, I then remind them that we are all working as a team on the unit and their use of their phone is taking them away from work, thus putting more work on our shoulders. This education usually curbs the behavior for good. For one particular co-worker, the phone was a major issue day in and day out and I didn't hesitate to bring the issue forward to my manager once I had exhausted all options."

"During my career as a nurse, I've taken great pride in the extra steps I take to ensure that my patients are in the safest hands possible. On my busy unit, patient safety starts with me taking all measures possible to not spread sickness and disease through proper hand washing and sanitizing procedures. When providing direct care, I utilize our patient checklists to ensure that I'm turning the patient in their bed as needed and have conversations with patients on the importance of asking for help when trying to get out of bed. Outside of patient safety, I always ensure proper housekeeping in our office and proper cleanup of messes in patients rooms to ensure that all fellow staff members can be safe as well."

"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree and I utilize my personal emotions on this job to ensure that I am providing the best care to my patients on a daily basis. By making a connection with patients, I become invested in their care and that truly matters to me. In the unfortunate cases of bad diagnoses or even death, I don't let my emotions overcome my ability to move forward and continue doing good work."

I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story, its the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."
