What sorts of hurdles do you anticipate in your first weeks on the job? How long will it take you to begin working on projects and make a meaningful contribution at Square?

"I created a 90-day impact plan I would like to share with you. After that, I'd like to know if there are any actions that I haven't included that I could take. In college, I built five years of part-time work experience focused on tech consulting. This would be my first job directly related to my career path. But, aside from the hard skills I've learned in college, I have strong interpersonal skills. I suppose my biggest challenge would be keeping my intimidation from standing in the way of building relationships and asking lots of questions. But I am focused and hard-working, especially when I have clear instructions. Get me up to speed, and I'll start working as soon as you say so. Point me in the right direction, and I'll get to it."

Most hiring managers understand it takes time to acclimate to a new role. They're also trying to asses your skill level, what it will take to get you up to speed, and what additional training you may require. With this question, your interviewer is curious about your approach to your onboarding and whether you'll feel confident to hit the ground running or require some hand-holding before settling in.

Be honest about any potential challenges you anticipate and how you respond to such challenges, sharing your work style and approach to onboarding in a new job. Use examples of how you navigated this terrain while starting at your most recent job, so you can help them know how they can help you. As Square says on its website, "We all grow together."

"I'd hit the ground running, work on getting to know everyone on the team, learning all I can about them, their current goals, and the challenges of the job. I'd invite open conversation and showcase the unique skills I'd bring. I've built a solid knowledge base to transition into a fintech role with Square within the product management space. I have all the requisite skills outlined in the position description and proficiency in other relevant skills that would allow me to make an impact as soon as possible at Square. I may ask a lot of questions because I want to do the job right."

Do you have any questions I can answer for you?

"Beyond the job description, is there something particular you are looking for? What does your ideal candidate look like? Are there any specific skills not detailed in the position description that you highly value or think are important?"

Many candidates feel that by saying they do not have questions, they are showing that they have researched the job and fully comprehend the requirements. Don't fall into that trap. One of the biggest interview mistakes you can make is not preparing any relevant questions. As they say on their site, "Get answers to your questions." By asking an insightful question, you show the interviewer full engagement and interest. Be sure that your queries are not mundane or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a question that is easily answered by simple research. Dig a bit deeper and ask questions related to the company's goals, your interviewer's favorite part about working for Square, upcoming changes in the industry, or clarification from your resume.

"Thank you for asking! What is the biggest challenge that Square's sales team will face in the next 12 months? What does a typical day look like in this position? Is this a recently vacated position or a new position? Under what circumstances did this position become vacant? How were they valued by the team?"

What new skill have you learned recently, and why did you learn it?

"I've always enjoyed learning new languages. I worked with someone from Brazil when I was putting myself through college. That sparked my interest in learning their language, so I spent the last three months learning Portuguese in my spare time. I spend about five to ten hours a week in my free time listening to Portuguese podcasts and reading articles in Portuguese, so I was learning through immersion. It's been an interesting project to work on outside of college that I look forward to each day!"

Your interviewer is assessing whether you are driven and focused on your professional development and how well you'll fit in with the rest of their teams. This is an opportunity to demonstrate that you are a quick learner, motivated to learn new skills, and a memorable applicant! Think of a unique skill you recently learned, either in a professional or personal setting, that will make you stand out as an applicant.

"My previous company recently sponsored a 50-hour course I took on the ins and outs of SEO. It dove into the key principles of SEO and how we can incorporate its most important tenets into our digital marketing practices. This new skill deepened my understanding of the industry and made me a more valuable asset for our team."

Where would you like to take your career in the next five to ten years?

"I know that beginning a career opens great mentoring and networking opportunities, so I'm excited to learn firsthand about the industry and where a career with Square could take me. I'm excited to dive deep into your product offerings and services and clarify where I want to be in a few years within the FinTech industry. While I'm open to where my skills and passions will take me in my career, my primary interest lies in product development."

As they state on their career page, "This is the place to start, run, and grow your career." So your interviewer is looking for like-minded individuals who will serve as a long-term fit for the position. This common interview question reveals how career-oriented you are and whether you chose to pursue this position to further your career goals or are just looking for a job.

Research the typical career trajectory of the position you're applying for. Demonstrate that you're a motivated professional who has reflected on your long-term career goals. When discussing your needs and your ultimate career goals, balance them with the apparent needs of Square. You want this to seem like a mutually beneficial, long-term partnership. When revealing your goals, consider everything that will assure them of the thought you put into this. It is okay to set your sights higher as long as your goals meet those of the organization.

"Now that I am to the midway point of my career, I am looking for my next move to be my final move until I retire. As a risk analyst, I want to focus on developing my advising skills to provide the best service possible. As I continue to grow in my skills and demonstrate my value, I'd like to move to a managerial role where I could oversee the work of junior analysts and PMs and mentor them towards success."

Describe how you handled a challenging situation with a colleague on the job.

"I ran into some difficulties communicating with my professor, who offered me guidance on my thesis. Then, at a certain point, he was unresponsive to the emails or messages I sent him asking questions or for clarification. It got to the point where I was losing progress. So I directly asked him his preferred method of communication when I had questions, and I learned that he prefers phone calls and face-to-face meetings over emails or text. So, I adjusted my communication approach. I got my questions answered and no longer wasted time composing detailed emails or messages. Overall, this difficult situation taught me that it's important to determine the preferred method of communication with any professional relationship."

Your interviewer wants to hear about your interpersonal and relationship-building skills and wants assurances you can effectively manage conflict as a member of the team. Emphasize your ability to collaborate and work well with others. Describe an occasion where your communication skills helped you navigate a difficult situation with a coworker. Focus on the steps you took to turn a potentially negative situation into a positive one. Discuss the lessons learned and the value they've provided for your career. As another of the taglines on their website says, "Do the work, and work together." All of your answers will help them evaluate how well you will fit into their culture, so take every phrase and statement of theirs to heart.

"I believe that direct, open communication in a friendly, assertive manner is most effective when working with my colleagues. I noticed my teammate wasn't meeting the deadlines we'd agreed upon while working on a big project for a client. I set up a meeting to revisit the deadlines, associated deliverables, and responsibilities we'd laid out beforehand. I then presented our situation and offered solutions. I focused on listening and asking questions so he wouldn't feel defensive. My teammate responded quite well to our chat, and we implemented a mutually agreed-upon plan that helped us follow through on and meet our deadlines."

Tell me about a time your listening skills helped you solve a problem.

"There was a big project at the end of a course I was taking in college, and there was one aspect of the instructions I didn't understand. I read the instructions several times, but the language was a bit messy. I asked my fellow students, and one interpreted it one way, and another understood it differently, so I decided to approach my professor. But this particular professor would often talk over you and assume they knew what you were going to say before you had a chance to say it. I anticipated this and started to explain that several students had different interpretations of one aspect of the project. I led the discussion by prompting them to ask questions. I showed them the section I highlighted, and they read it, and I actively listened to what they had to say, hoping their verbal instruction would provide clarification, which it did. I mirrored what they said, yet used my own words instead of theirs to make sure they understood my interpretation as I understood their explanation. I watched their facial cues as I got to the point in question, and there was no confusion. They confirmed we were on the same page. I then suggested they clarify this with the rest of the class, as I wasn't the only one confused by it. They thanked me, and later on, I scored 140%."

This question probes your communication skills and how active listening plays a role. Someone with above-average communication skills can identify a communication breakdown, or the potential for one, and adapt their communication style to the lesser-skilled person. Active listening is a crucial component of this. Give an example that demonstrates how you avoided miscommunication by using your listening skills while asking clarifying questions to ensure everyone was on the same page. Three keywords Square uses on their site, combined in a key phrase, is 'Read, watch, and listen.' Consider incorporating these into your answer.

"My boss asked me to manage a project that involved various tasks which I'd never done before, including running new reports that would aid in solving a consistent customer problem we had encountered. After my boss communicated the main issues clients were experiencing, I made sure I understood what she needed of me by asking straightforward questions that got to the crux of the issue, including 'So what you're asking is...?', 'Do you mean that you need me to do (X)?,' and 'What do you think about (X) approach?' When navigating new territory, I found it helpful to ask clarifying questions. I read her instructions, watched her facial cues, and listened to what she had to say. Once I was sure we were on the same page, I jumped on the project, and my boss was impressed with my solution."

Discuss how you approach explaining complex ideas in simple terms.

"In school, I was often asked what I majored in, which often only raised more questions. This forced me to explain complicated ideas in a way that makes sense to people outside my field. While doing so, I'd ensure that my tone was never patronizing. At first, I had trouble explaining such new concepts in layman's terms and realized I had to do more research to better communicate what I was trying to say. I found that it is almost always most effective to describe complex ideas in simple terms. Keeping myself educated allows me to explain complicated ideas in a way that makes sense to people outside of the industry. Over time, I got better at it and would communicate in a way that would get them excited to talk about it. This would open the door to outside perspectives, and I'd often learn something new from those and place great value on hearing their input."

As they say at Square, "We make the complex simple." A crucial part of customer service is distilling complex information into relatable language for your clients while ensuring everyone is on the same page. Your interviewer wants to know if your communication skills are developed enough to meet their requirements. Your ability to communicate your ideas impacts how well you work with others, as well as how well you work with their clients, which is a key component of Square's company culture.

"In my previous work as a tech consultant, I would echo the language of my clients and adapt to their communication style when explaining things. I'd avoid extraneous details that would only further confuse them, yet remain open to any questions they'd have to assure them of my availability and transparency. Sticking to what was relevant, I'd always strive for straightforward and concise communication with my clients and colleagues. Above all, I focused on listening to my clients and addressing their most pressing needs, pain points, and goals."

Do you have experience preparing and delivering presentations?

"The bulk of my experience comes from my time at university, where I prepared a variety of speeches and keynote presentations. My dad worked as a graphic designer and taught me early on that visuals were just as important as what you had to say. So, I was particularly proud of my presentations and how well they were received. Public speaking, as nerve-wracking as it sometimes can be, is something I am no stranger to. I am confident in my public speaking and presentation skills. I look forward to gaining even more experience in preparing and delivering professional presentations for clients and internal stakeholders in a Square setting and learning more about their approach to design."

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Square, says, "We don't want to add things. We take things away to make them more simple." Square puts a lot of focus on their design. When discussing your experience with giving presentations, elaborating on your presentation's design will add value to your answer. "Design at Square is multifaceted, stretching across many disciplines and teams. Together, we create thoughtful and remarkable products, experiences, and campaigns to drive economic empowerment for our sellers. It all begins with design. At Square, design is the driving force behind economic empowerment."

The responsibilities of this position at Square may include planning, preparing, and delivering presentations to clients or other stakeholders. For some, public speaking can be intimidating. Whether in college or grad school, if you're just starting, or in a professional setting, consider how you would describe your comfort zone with public speaking, your willingness to step outside your comfort zone, and your presentation skills.

"In my current role, I regularly present to my clients and my team of twenty advisors. To gain confidence as a speaker and presenter, I became a Toastmasters member two years ago. Since joining, I have taken courses such as 'The Better Speaker' series, 'Beginning Your Speech,' and 'Concluding Your Speech.' I also have training in PowerPoint, Prezi, and Keynote, so I can make my presentations visually engaging."

While no formal programming skills are required for this role, you'll be expected to work with the engineering team here at Square. How confident do you feel in your ability to manage and discuss technical projects?

"I am a quick study. I ask a lot of questions and consider myself an excellent communicator. If there is no one to answer a question for me, I will look it up until I am sure I get it and have all the answers I need to continue. This is well within my comfort zone, and I am ready and willing to liaise with anyone in any department. I require very little hand-holding and can get up to speed faster than most."

This question tests your ability to step outside of your comfort zone and work in a cross-functional setting, liaising with other teams, particularly technical teams or teams outside your area of expertise. Thoroughly familiarize yourself with Square's approach and philosophy. "We believe everyone should have an opportunity to thrive, and not be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex." While you don't need to be an expert in their work, you should feel comfortable collaborating with these groups while exhibiting that you are a quick study.

"As someone who's been in the tech industry my entire career, I feel confident in my ability to communicate with team members in more technical roles. I found this to be a challenge when I started in business development, but I did my best to ask questions and read articles and books that helped me pick up this 'language.' Now, it's second nature. In my current position, I work with a team of software engineers to support the implementation of bug fixes, and I look forward to continuing this interdepartmental teamwork with a team at Square."

This role at Square requires excellent problem-solving skills. Tell me about a time you had to analyze information in order to make a recommendation.

"When I was a graduate teaching assistant, a student came to me with a problem where their findings couldn't be replicated. They were certain that their initial findings were correct and asked if I would be a second set of eyes to try to find the discrepancy. So, I took the same approach they'd relied upon, sorting through the same trends and historical data to see if I could recreate the same results. I examined the various outcomes and realized they'd transposed the data from two different aspects of their research, making their findings inconclusive. But all was not lost, and I offered some alternative approaches to their project."

With this question, your interviewer aims to assess your problem-solving and customer service skills. As they state on their website, "Listen to users. We listen to and learn from owners of businesses large and small. We understand their problems and anticipate their needs." To get a sense of your analytical and problem-solving skills and how you would apply those skills in a role at Square, they want to know how you collect information. How you answer will offer insights into your communication skills, attention to detail, and analytical abilities.

"In my previous position, we worked with a small business to address their problems with customer retention and employee efficiency. They weren't sure what they were looking for. As the sales lead, I combed through their pain points, took detailed notes, and asked questions that got to the heart of their most pressing challenges. I analyzed the findings and created a detailed proposal with a host of solutions, including a package of six products and services. They bought the package and saw customer retention increase by 20% and efficiency by 40% by the end of the fiscal year."

Analytical skills are critical to success in this role at Square. How are you analytically minded?

"Given my university experience, I consider my analytical skills one of my strong suits. As a computer science and finance double major, I regularly engaged in projects that allowed me to gather and organize data, perform various analyses to conclude, and finally communicate, how these data-informed trends would impact solutions to the project. I was able to learn R, Python, and MatLab to aid in this process. As a result, I consider myself an analytical and logical thinker, which I think will be useful when helping clients make thorough, data-informed financial decisions."

Your interviewer is curious about your style and how you approach your work. How you answer will inform them of your attention to detail, how you identify and define problems, and your approach to finding solutions. As they say on their website, Square is looking for better ways to succeed, and "we're looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square." So, they need to ensure whomever they hire can live up to their standards.

"As a business analyst, I use my analytical skills when detecting patterns in financial trends, observing and interpreting data, theorizing where the market is going, or brainstorming ideas for my clients when their decisions depend on multiple market factors. I take pride in my analytical abilities because they help me do my job well and provide helpful answers to clients' biggest questions."

Are there any preferred skills for this position which you feel you’ll need additional training in?

"I've carefully looked through the position description and have spoken with professional connections in similar roles about their key responsibilities, and I don't foresee any gaps in training knowledge, except for employing these skills in a real-world setting. I try to be as prepared as possible for the next stage of my career plan as I embark on it. That's why I started my first career plan as I started college, revising it every semester. I've been exposed to various training and career development opportunities, and thus feel confident with my current level of training for this role. However, I'm always open to learning more efficient ways of doing things, and would regularly seek feedback from my supervisor and colleagues regarding improving my methods. I welcome opportunities for ongoing training and improvement."

Ensure you've read the position description thoroughly and reflected on the areas you need to improve. The trick to this question is in how you answer it. If the answer is yes, describe what you do know to demonstrate your self-awareness of this growth opportunity. It's acceptable to be transparent about minor experience gaps. Tell the interviewer your expectations of how long it will take you to get up to speed and how Square can help you. As they say on their careers page, "At Square, you'll find development opportunities that support who you are both inside and outside the office."

"As I've worked in this industry for the past five years, I feel confident that I have the skills and background needed to exceed expectations in this role. However, I am always looking to expand my skills and adjust to changing industry best practices. I noticed in the position description that knowledge of (XYZ) programming language is encouraged. I've only briefly worked with this language for one project. I was hoping you could expand on the resources that Square provides to get employees up to speed on a new programming language."

What would you consider the most pressing challenges facing the FinTech industry today?

"I wrote a paper in college on the challenges for financial institutions regarding gaining the trust of users, especially small business owners and startups. With so many pay services and fund transfer services out there, there are a lot of cyber security concerns. In addition, scams are growing more elaborate and sophisticated. As a result, there seems to be a demand for increased supervisory and regulatory action, including better consumer and investor protection."

As a FinTech professional, this question gives you the opportunity to flex your knowledge of the industry and the emergent trends and challenges. The idea is to come across as someone fully versed in their field, who they could consider a trusted resource to represent their brand. To demonstrate this to your interviewer, highlight one challenge relevant to the position you're applying for. Common challenges that you might highlight include cybersecurity, the relationship of traditional financial services firms with FinTech companies, regulations, and protecting user data. Also, be sure to mention Square blog, 'Town Square," which they refer to as a 'BUSINESS RESOURCE CENTER.'

"Protecting customer privacy is a top challenge for professionals in this industry today. We've seen several high-profile data leaks and infringements on customer privacy in the past few years. Maintaining a robust data protection system that allows clients to feel secure is incredibly important within the industry, and it's something that I take seriously as a professional. It's clear Square takes it seriously as well, considering that all information their customers submit is encrypted to their servers, regardless of whether they're using a public or private Wi-Fi connection or a data service on their phones."

What software programs are you versed in, and how adaptable would you say that you are to learning and using new programs?

"At university, we used a program called Zendesk, an interactive customer support tool. I was a quick study and utilized all the great functions of the program. I became so proficient so fast that soon I was showing my professor aspects of the tool even he wasn't aware of. I'm also fluent in the entire Microsoft suite of products, which I use daily at home."

Share your experience and speak to the industry-relevant analysis and design tools you've used and are proficient in. Research the position and the company to determine the tools they use and whether they are proprietary. Assure your interviewer you are a quick study able to learn new tools quickly, even if you don't consider yourself a software expert. Emphasize your motivation to succeed and your willingness to learn and master new skills.

"In my current role as a senior analyst at (XYZ) firm, I use Microsoft Excel, Capital IQ, SAP, and various BI tools daily. In addition, I've consulted with companies that use various POS software that has aided them in sales and inventory management. A solid understanding of POS software is essential to Square's work in this space. I'm a quick learner, too, and am open to learning any new tools unique to Square to succeed in this role."

This role requires a basic understanding of programming. Which languages are you fluent in?

"A majority of my experience falls within Python. In my current range of experience, I delved deeply into artificial intelligence, and Python is awesome with this advanced technology. As I understand it, from talking to another engineer here at Square, I need to learn Scala. Though I haven't worked directly with Scala, I've read up on it quite a bit and started learning it at home. My experience and willingness to learn would have me up and running in no time if hired for this role."

While this question gives your interviewer insight into the diversity of your programming language experience, they also want to know that you are adaptable. Research the position and Square as much as possible before your interview so that you can speak to the specific languages they work with. If you are unschooled in some of the languages they use, do your homework so you have a cursory understanding. This will display your motivation and ability to quickly pick up new skills. The need for programming knowledge (and which languages, in particular) will depend on the role to which you're applying.

"I've worked with a broad range of programming languages through various professional and academic projects. I consider myself fluent in C++, Python, and PHP. In my current role, I work primarily with C++, but I pride myself on my ability and passion for learning new programming languages and would be able to do so if hired for this role with Square."

If there was one thing you could automate for a brick and mortar retailer, what would it be?

"I would want to automate their signage. Whether it be an A-Frame that stood on the sidewalk out front or the sign above a display or end cap, I would love for an easy design suite to allow for eye-catching displays for a retailer that would eliminate the need for the extra expense of hiring someone to do their design work or the cost of repeated supplies that contributed to waste. This item would be sustainable for the business and the environment."

"WORK AT SQUARE. Invent today. Shape tomorrow." As with any interview question, this allows you to showcase your merits and how well you fit in with their culture. Not only do you want to exhibit your passion for this industry and what they offer, but you also want to show you've done your research by not suggesting products or software solutions they already offer. So have fun with this question, and be innovative.

"I would love to help design a program that allows a retailer to enter their inventory into a subscription comp-shop software that would compare the price of every item in their inventory to their competitors. It would also offer hard data suggestions on how to lower their overhead to better compete, such as lowering back stock and warehousing costs to a more truck-to-shelf modality, or comp shopping distributors."

Tell me what you know about Square and the work that we do.

"Well, the company was co-founded with Jack Dorsey, who also co-founded Twitter, and has taken an ethical approach to all his business dealings, exhibiting integrity every step of the way, including his approach to diversity and inclusion. Square and Block are the aspects of his financial payment companies, but it has developed into so much more than that, enabling small business owners to self-manage their businesses in more sustainable and practical ways through simple automation."

Familiarize yourself with Square's website, their products and services, the requirements of this role, and any secondary sources that provide useful information on the company and their competitors. Ensure that you've done your homework beforehand and can speak confidently about Square's history since they launched in 2009. This should include: "What started as a little white reader is now a powerful ecosystem of commerce solutions." Your interviewer is interested in how thoroughly you've prepared for this opportunity, what your answer will reveal about your work ethic, and what clues your answer may hold to what interests you in this opportunity.

"You are best known for the hardware you provide for small businesses, especially your credit card reader applications that allow businesses to accept credit card payments with a transaction rate per swipe. What many individuals outside of the industry don't know, however, is how vastly you've expanded as a company to provide a host of solutions for businesses in the areas of marketing, HR, website development, business analytics, E-commerce solutions, and even loans for small businesses. I find your growth within the FinTech industry quite impressive, as you now have 15 office locations worldwide and serve customers all over the globe. All your products and services center on empowering your customers, which aligns with my long-term professional goals in the financial space."

What quality sets you apart from other candidates?

"I would say my work ethic, focus, and willingness to help others on my team are some of my strong points. Also, I am a big fan of all of Square's offerings and a big Jack Dorsey fan as well. I feel as if I already embrace the culture and values of Square. I am also always expanding my knowledge, going above and beyond, and finding innovative ways to maximize efficiency."

Spend time reflecting on how your unique experiences will make you the best person for the job. According to their website, Square seeks applicants with 'divergent perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.' Consider what sets you apart as an applicant and what is unique about your story or career trajectory. Advertise what you'll lend to the team or what you feel makes you unique. Highlight at least one quality that makes this position a good fit for you and makes you the best person for this position.

Don't point out generic qualifying statements. There are likely many qualified candidates vying for the same position who are hardworking, motivated, and accomplished.

"I'm confident I have the formal training and experience needed to be successful in this role. What sets me apart is the experience I bring with product management. In my last role at (XYZ) company, I increased sales by 14% and maintained one of the top ratings on my team for customer satisfaction. As you can see, I'm passionate about product management and have a proven track record of success."

"From what I understand, this role in client services and sales with Square will include a lot of clients interaction and business development. What makes me unique is the experience I bring working in food industry sales. I've spent the past five years working with small businesses in the food and beverage industry to improve their business models and market their products and services to prospective customers. I've seen firsthand what innovative strategies can do to empower businesses, which I understand is central to your mission at Square."

Looking at our products and services, what do you think we do better at Square than our competitors?

"Honestly, aside from their suite of products and services that puts so much control and power in the hands of a startup or small business owner, I am most impressed with the sleek design of their products and their partnership and compatibility with Apple. Not only does Apple Tap work with their products, but the Square Card for business owners works with Apple Wallet. PayPal's card doesn't. Apple prides themselves on protecting their customer's privacy and keeping their information secure, and Square and Block share the same values. Just knowing that they hold a partnership built on integrity and cool professional design sets them light years ahead of the competition."

This question is your opportunity to show your interviewer that you've done your homework and are well-prepared to represent their brand. Although there are several competitors for different applications, from niche eCommerce, restaurants, or retail, the only comparable alternative that has as wide a scope as Square is PayPal. However, even Paypal doesn't offer a full suite of products that Square does, from inventory management to Payroll software. So, before your interview, research Square's products and services and PayPal, and you can offer your unique perspective on how Square has a competing edge.

"I'm aware that Square's primary competitors are Intuit, PayPal Here, ShopKeep, and Shopify, among others. While it may seem like the most obvious answer, I feel strongly that Square is the industry giant for credit card solutions for small businesses. The hardware, product support, and staff expertise you provide are unparalleled. The part of your mission that I find unique to Square is your emphasis on economic empowerment and continuously developing new tools to address this globally."

"It's been interesting to see you grow as a company over the years. An aspect of your business that makes you the most effective is that you make it incredibly easy for clients to bundle various solutions to address the diverse challenges they might face. How would your coworkers would describe you?

"My peers have told me that I'm a good listener and easy to collaborate with on projects. Communication is key to success within any relationship, which is why I've honed my listening abilities and assertiveness over the years. My peers have also described me as driven and motivated. I tackle projects head-on and set lofty but attainable goals for myself."

Tell me about a time you faced a difficult situation at work and how you approached it.

"Our professor presented the class with a no-win scenario that required resourceful thinking as the only means of accomplishing our goals. The scenario was designed to test how we faced impending failure, individually and as a group, how we'd deal with knowing we couldn't win, and what we'd learn from such failure. While I watched everyone else in class fight against the odds, I accepted failure immediately and didn't fight the odds. So I completed the simulation before anyone else. The professor smiled and watched me on and off over the next 2 hours. Once the last person was finished, she reviewed our scores and asked me to stand. She then, in front of the class, asked me why I had taken the course of action I had. I said if the goal of the test was to see how we as a group coped with impending failure and what we'd learned from it, then what would be the point of continuing down the wrong path? I explained that to control the damage, I should change course and shut it down right away. I'd evaluate from an outside perspective the results of the rest of the class and determine the best course after adjusting per those findings. I was the only person who received a perfect score."

This question is ambiguous with intention. Your interviewer is curious about what you might consider a difficult situation at work. How you answer will tell them what skills you'd employ to find the best path forward and what it might reveal about your performance - whether you are self-managed in your work or require more hand-holding and constant reassurance. "Variety keeps the job exciting. When I worked for a tech startup a few years ago, each day presented new challenges. We were developing systems with no blueprint to follow, and onboarding new clients was sometimes challenging. I approached every situation with diligent preparation, performing extensive research and capitalizing on my project management tools. I developed close relationships with my clients by listening closely to their pain points. I approached each situation by identifying customized deliverables to each one."

"Last year's market was particularly volatile for my previous company, and we faced uncertainty daily. What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion?

"I think there are too many occasions where those from underprivileged communities aren't granted the same opportunities as others. In my opinion, everyone should be offered equal opportunity based on their talents and merits, above all else. More so, the more diverse a team is, bridging communities, the more that team has to offer in forms of alternative perspectives and innovation."

Only this will give your team a competitive edge. But at the center of that is the team, depending on how well every member works together."

How would you describe your style of leadership?

"Well, I haven't been in a leadership position quite yet, but I am a natural-born leader. I am all about encouraging others to perform at their best, helping them identify their strengths while navigating their weaknesses so they don't stand in their own way. Also, I consider myself very emotionally intelligent and self-aware, and I'm always leading the charge."

There are five main leadership types: authoritarian, transactional, delegative, participative, and transformational. "Above all, a leader must be flexible in their style rather than relying on just one approach. Tell me about a time you dealt with adversity while in a position of leadership.

"I started a group project in school, but three of our five members bowed out last minute, and my only other surviving member nearly bowed out due to the adversity we faced in getting it done. But instead, I developed several systems that allowed us to triage and address each potential hurdle, cutting the work in half. We then adjusted our approach and the end goal of the project to ensure we met our deadlines. We loaded a work organizational tool on our phones, allowing us to add to the thread and adjust our approach 24/7. In the end, we completed the project ahead of the deadline, earning perfect scores."

The true test of leadership is how you conduct yourself when things don't go according to plan, your decision-making, how you cope with the stress, and how quickly you respond to such circumstances. Highlight the challenges you've faced and the strategies you've employed to push through those situations. How you answer this question will inform them of your definition of adversity and whether you are up to the tasks facing you at a position with Square.

"While managing a team of ten individuals within our client services department, I learned there was animosity between two team members. I scheduled more meetings with each team member, prioritizing open communication. From there, we developed strategies to address each personnel challenge that arose. I created smaller teams within the overall team for particular projects to ensure that team members worked in a more collaborative micro-environment suited to their professional strengths. After a few months, those two individuals felt a part of something bigger, put their differences aside, and the team was running much more smoothly and with zero conflict."

How would you describe your ideal boss?

"My ideal boss would be a mentor who encourages us to perform at our best and inspires the team. When you have a great coach that promotes a team's collaboration and camaraderie, there is nothing like it to inspire you to rise to new heights."

Your interviewer is curious whether they can live up to what you are looking for in your leadership and how well your expectations align with Square's company culture. They want to know if you rely on a collaborative rather than a hierarchical approach to management and whether you prefer strict guidelines or are capable of self-managing your performance. This question will give your interviewer a better idea of your work style and how you operate in a team and respond to authority figures. Keep your answer positive.

"I've been lucky in that I have gotten along with my supervisors in all my previous roles and my current job. I work best with clear communication, clear expectations, and consistent check-ins with my coworkers and supervisors. I can also operate independently on certain projects as long as expectations are communicated upfront. I'm flexible and can adapt to any management style as long as it fits these basics. All anyone needs to succeed are the tools to get the job done."

"My ideal boss is someone who values the team and their input and doesn't take a strict top-down approach. My current boss regularly relies on our input, which we appreciate. We feel valued, which has helped me develop my communication and leadership skills in a meaningful way."

If you were unable to answer a question or solve a client or colleague's problem, how would you handle it?

"In my current role, I'm often asked questions that require approval to answer, whether from our sales, finance, or service staff. So, I'd answer the questions I could, and when able, I'd put them in contact with those who could help them. I set clear expectations and work with our teams to deliver the best service possible."

'Solutions' is one of the most dominant keywords on Square's sites, and they market themselves as identifying and coming up with business solutions for every aspect of a client's business. This question aims to evaluate your approach to problem-solving, how solutions-oriented you are, and your emotional intelligence. Recent studies have detailed the high level of emotional intelligence and power behind using the words 'I don't know' in an appropriate context, as opposed to speaking with authority with guesswork or uninformed opinions. In a client-facing role with Square, you may be asked questions you can't answer with the information on hand or aren't qualified to answer. The interviewers want to know how you answer such questions without compromising your customer's confidence in the brand you represent. It's okay to be honest with a client while exhibiting excellent communication skills and offering assurances you will get back to them with the answers they need. Give me an example of a time you had to solve a problem without all of the necessary information.

"A couple of months ago, I fielded a call from a colleague's client while she was on vacation. This client had several questions about their finances, which I couldn't resolve with the information I had. I informed them their advisor was on vacation but assured them I'd find the answers to their questions within the hour. The client found this acceptable, and I dug in, learned what I needed to, and got back to them within 15 minutes."

This question focuses on your work style and approach - primarily, your analytical skills, attention to detail, resourcefulness, and ability to think outside the box. Consider what problem-solving means to you based on your experiences. Think about your work approach in such situations, whether you try to find the missing information before proceeding or take the information you have on hand and take calculated risks. Lastly, be ready to answer how you would evaluate and justify such risks. The goal is to appraise your approach by your success, in which case this question can be viewed as yet another opportunity to showcase your merits. Remember, Square centers its business on 'finding business solutions.'

"When I joined my current organization, I took on a vacant customer service role with a backlog of work that needed addressing in addition to my daily activities. The interim rep before me only kept brief notes on daily visitors and calls rather than appropriately logging them, and a lot of information was missing. Additionally, once onboarded, I realized my current workload wouldn't permit catching up on the backlog. I had ideas of how to address this and approached my supervisor. We agreed to plug in the fields we had the information for and leave the others blank. I put in overtime, logged hours into our system from home, and completed this basic data entry as overtime."

"Time is money, and I take the money I earn seriously and approach it with integrity. That's the point of working in a fast-paced environment. You can't be timid and wait for someone to make decisions for you based on the same information you have. I firmly believe that a good plan today is better than a better one tomorrow. I don't think it is wise to be rash. Risk requires calculation and care, working smarter, not harder. When evaluating your surroundings, more often than not, you realize you have more on hand than you originally thought. Sometimes you realize, after the fact, you could have done things a little better, and you take that and learn from it and earn your keep."

What kind of salary are you looking for?

"According to the current job market, someone with my degree and experience is typically valued at a salary range of $85,000 to $95,000. However, in looking at the increased rate of worth with accumulated experience, that number rises, which begs a few questions. How frequently are performance reviews and pay increases distributed on average, and are those restrictive or distributed on merit? What benefits, bonuses, and other perks are offered with this position that would allow adjustment to those figures?"

This is often a tricky question to navigate. Consider this question an opportunity to showcase your merits and work style, increasing your professional worth by evaluating this problematic question from every angle and displaying outside-of-the-box thinking while being resourceful. Perform research to determine their salary range. Figure in any perks you receive that lower your cost of living, such as your current salary, bonuses, benefits, etc. Consider how frequently you receive pay raises so you can project your estimated worth at its current rate. This will inform them what they have to compete with, as well as any other offers of employment.

As they state on their website, 'We believe in being fair and square. We're building an inclusive economy where all sellers have equal access to opportunity. We strive to live by these same values in all our workplaces.' Since they are looking for employees who embrace their values and ideology, you must also consider this when discussing salary. Try to learn what their salary range is. Remember, posting a job opportunity, interviewing, performing background checks, hiring, and onboarding are expensive endeavors. Not all the funds they earn are profit, and every department has a budget. So make sure the figure is fair and considerate of all parties. You don't want to sell yourself short, but you don't want to come across as inconsiderate either.

"I'm looking for compensation in line with my qualifications and experience. Currently, at XYZ, I earn a salary of $105,000, receive pay increases twice a year at a 10% increase, and get a yearly bonus of $1500. In addition, I get commuter perks, a generous health/dental/vision plan, equal contributions to a retirement mutual fund, and stock options. With my recently completed graduate degree and six years of experience at (XYZ) company, competing salaries for my experience level are estimated between $120,000 - 130,000. Two other job offers have come in that range, but I have been looking forward to this interview with Square, as working here is at the top of my list and most in line with my career goals."

100 people see a digital ad. 100 people don’t see a digital ad. Of the 100 who do see the ad, 10 subscribe. One ad costs $50. Should Square use digital ads? How would you determine this?

"I would need more information before making a final decision. We are missing a key piece of information: the number of conversions from 100 individuals who did not see the ad and how defined the targeted audience was. A typical conversation rate for a Google ad, for instance, ranges from less than 1% to about 8%. If this percentage were in line with the experimental group, that would lead me to believe that the difference between the groups is not significant enough to warrant a portion of the advertising budget to support these digital ads."

Case study questions aren't uncommon, and scenario-based questions like these are not intended to trick you. Don't overthink it. Keep your answer straight and to the point. Map out your thought process and demonstrate your reasoning skills for making such decisions.

"Square would have spent $5,000 on advertising for a 10% conversion rate in this scenario. Thus, as the conversion rate is significantly higher than the average, I think we can assume that the ad used was likely effective and should be used again as marketing material."

How would you keep yourself motivated while working under high-stress circumstances?

"I thrive in such situations. I learned early on that every emotion has power. So if I experience stress, I will look at that energy as fuel I can capitalize on. I just focus that energy and use it as a burst towards productivity, getting me closer to the end goal. Also, when I watch others getting burned out, they often put in more effort avoiding the work at hand. It amazes me how much effort people sometimes put into avoiding doing the work. It is much easier to power through it rather than delay and elongate the stress through task aversion. Not me. Powering through it gives me power and focus. That's a positive."

Your interviewer wants to know how effectively you'll be able to perform in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment or when required to work long hours while facing tight deadlines. How you answer will inform them whether you can maintain your productivity and emotional balance or whether feeling overwhelmed results in task procrastination and burnout syndrome. "I've spent the last two years in the investment banking industry, where my team frequently handled enormous workloads under tight deadlines. Being a person that thrives in a fast-paced work environment, I consider myself confident, able to handle stress, and a calming force with my colleagues and clients. Someone else's stress isn't directed at me, so I don't internalize it. I consider tight deadlines as motivation to work as efficiently as possible. My experience in IB allowed me to grow more comfortable amidst market volatility. Those factors are outside of my control."

What does teamwork mean to you?

"My current colleagues would tell you that I'm knowledgeable and use this expertise to contribute to the team effort. I communicate effectively, take direction from others, and always lend a hand wherever I can. I understand that I would be working very closely with the engineering team at Square, which I assume would involve some degree of interdepartmental coordination. I am eager to learn about new areas outside my expertise to develop professionally, so I look forward to this collaboration."

As Square says on their site repeatedly, "We Grow Together." This question evaluates how well your personality will fit into their work culture. Some are singularly focused on their career progression and will take every measure to edge ahead of what they see as competition. The other approach for furthering one's career is through teamwork, supporting the group effort, and exhibiting leadership skills by helping further your team's goals on an individual level and as a group through mentoring, coaching, and remaining focussed on the big picture. Consider these points while answering this question and what growing together means.

"I prefer to work in an environment that promotes teamwork and collegiality over the shark tank mentality. If I were fortunate enough to join the team here, I would love to eventually take on a leadership role and help train and foster a more collaborative growth environment. I've delegated work effectively, and a clear communicator, and am a great coach when training new employees to accomplish their goals and further their dreams. Describe a time you implemented systems that increased efficiency at work.

"I've used Excel frequently in school, making what my peers have referred to as complicated customized spreadsheets, which I used to keep track of and analyze product data. I think these sheets are rather intuitive. I've made them for my peers, who regularly record macros to quickly format data and perform various analyses. What once would have taken 15-20 minutes to clean up data and run analyses can now be done in a matter of seconds. I'm always looking for new ways to make my work more efficient and am eager to learn more about the tools and resources Square provides to aid in automatic processing."

A big part of system implementation is eliminating shortcuts or cutting corners. Ideally, it should always be easier to do the job the right way than to do it the wrong way to make the work easier. Systems should be developed to ensure doing the work correctly is the path of least resistance. So consider Square's statements: "We make the complex simple. We don't want to add things--we take things away to make them more simple." Think of times you've done this and your approach to systems implementation that reflects like-mindedness with their culture and work environment.

"I've found Python useful in automating various tasks and functions. In my previous role, I created Python programs that allowed me to rename and organize hundreds of files at once or send reminder emails and text messages to clients. Learning more about how to automate my work freed up time to work more closely with clients and colleagues, making me more effective I understand this role will require me to use Python, among other programs. I look forward to continuing to hone my automatic processes and learning from my team about what has been most effective for them."
