"I think that sites offering illegal or pirated versions of television shows, movies, and other videos are doing a terrible disservice to the entertainment industry. Taking profits away from the studios, talent, producers, and content distributors is a short term gain but in the end, will greatly affect the future of media."

Illegal streaming or unlawful downloading is running rampant these days, forcing legitimate companies to drop their pricing or find other ways to draw in honest customers. The interviewer would like to know your thoughts when it comes to sites that offer illegal or pirated video downloads.

"I recently read an article stating that illegal media and sites with pirated content are becoming less popular among the general public. I believe we are more educated today than we were ten years ago, on the negative effects that pirated content has on media as a whole."

Why are you looking for a new job?

"I have had my eye out for a new opportunity for some time now. Although I have no direct concerns with my employer on a day to day basis, I cannot see the career trajectory that I need. I would love to join a larger organization like yours with a more promising opportunity."

The interviewer is asking, point blank, what your reason is for seeking a new opportunity. Perhaps you were terminated, or your company closed their office. Maybe you are not receiving the growth opportunities you once thought you would have. Whatever your reasoning, be positive and do not speak poorly about your most recent employer.

"Currently, I work for a startup, and I am more interested in working for a larger and more established broadcast and media organization where I can learn, work on larger projects, and be mentored by those more knowledgeable than I."

What role do you usually take in team projects?

"I am usually the 'ideas person' in team projects. In my current position, I am not the most persuasive, but I am highly creative. This skill means that, in most projects, I am great at creating a plan of action but am most comfortable passing the final client-facing tasks to our more extroverted personnel."

The interviewer truly wants to understand the role that you naturally take on, when put into a team-based environment. If you tend to take the lead, you can let the interviewer know, but avoid sounding overbearing. If you usually like to generate new ideas and allow someone else to execute them, share your creative side but express that you prefer for others to take the lead.

"I am newer to my media career so, at this point, I will be quite careful with making suggestions in group meetings. I have great ideas that I am more comfortable pitching one-on-one with my boss. The more experience that I gain, the more comfortable I am becoming when it comes to speaking up in team meetings or during team collaborations."

With the ongoing changes in the media and entertainment industry, how do you keep your knowledge current?

"Every week I listen to the NAB Podcast with Josh Miely. This podcast is from the National Association of Broadcasters and focuses on a range of topics from FCC issues, programmatic ad buying, and concerns that broadcasters face today. In addition to this podcast, I also subscribe to a few broadcasting blogs. I greatly value the information shared among fellow professionals. What resources do you prefer to stay on top of industry trends and changes?"

Employers expect employees to stay up-to-date in their respective field, and today's technology makes this reasonably easy! List several ways that you receive your industry knowledge and stay on top of media and entertainment trends. Tell the interviewer about those daily update emails you receive from organizations who are authorities on media, conferences you attend, and professional organizations of which you are involved. Lastly, it's a great idea to ask the interviewer what resources they refer to for industry trends. That question can start up a great conversation, and teach you a thing or two as well.

"I have Google News alerts set up for industry-specific keywords, am subscribed to multiple newsletters, and follow the three leading industry associations on social media. I also receive their quarterly updates. Also, I love to learn about the latest ad trends and always draw on the experience of my industry contacts who have been working in media as long as I have been alive."

What work situations excite and motivate you?

"I am a creative person and, as such, I love an environment with friendly colleagues. When a team is encouraged to get along and discuss ideas, it makes for excellent results."

SiriusXM hiring authorities would like to know how to motivate you on the job. It is essential, for your success, that the hiring manager knows how to keep you motivated and excited to come to work every day. Share with the interviewer what they could do to ensure that you are happy and productive.

"Paving new paths and creating structures to support organizations excites me the most. I am self-motivated and enjoy seeing my hard work make a difference for an organization."

Would you say you are a better verbal or written communicator?

"I am comfortable with both so it would depend on the message, I suppose. Big news needs to be communicated verbally and followed up in written form, but quick messages or simple changes can be communicated effectively through email without the hassle of breaking away from work for a call or meeting."

In business, especially when working in the media or entertainment industry, it's vital that you are solid both as a written, and a verbal communicator. Your talents may lean one way or another, and that is okay. Discuss with the interviewer in which manner you prefer to communicate and then be sure to discuss how you are improving in the other.

"I like to leverage both methods of communication at work. Sometimes, situations call for verbal communications and other times, written. As a rule of thumb, I tend to practice verbal communications, with written follow up. Utilizing multiple methods of comm creates repetition and therefore, change."

Do you consider yourself a persuasive person?

"I can be persuasive when it comes to helping potential clients see which advertising options are best for them. It's important to lay out the pros' of advertising with SiriusXM, over other competitors, and I am confident in my ability to deliver excellent sales results due to my persuasive nature."

The world of media requires professionals who are highly persuasive. Part of being an excellent communicator is also having the power of persuasion when necessary. There is a difference between persuasion and debating - or even convincing. Persuasion is used when you want to influence someone rather than tell them that they are wrong, and you are right. The power of persuasion is essential if you are selling or pitching anything. It is also a helpful skill when you want to gain momentum with your coworkers or have your boss better understand your approach on a project. It is not a negative thing to be persuasive. "Persuasion and media marketing methods go hand in hand so, yes, I believe that I am a persuasive person. My approach is not sly or combative in any way, however. I go about persuading others by displaying how my approach, or belief, could benefit the other party."

"Your media director position is the position I have been striving for, for the past twelve years of my career. I have run smaller broadcast agencies with large clients, in the past. Now, I am ready to bring my skills to a larger media organization."

How do you react when you are dissatisfied with the quality of your work, or the outcome of your work?

"I am rarely dissatisfied with my work because I keep very high standards for myself, and what I deliver. With that said, should I be dissatisfied with the quality of my work I would own up to it and try again until I was proud of the work I delivered."

SiriusXM would like to know how you respond to failure in the workplace. There will always be a time when you are not happy with your work environment, but your reaction is what will determine whether or not you recover from the disappointment. Show that you have the maturity to be able to respond to dissatisfaction productively.

"In media and marketing, there is often room to play around with our work and bounce back from mistakes. I allow myself to make mistakes, tweak my work, and play around with different creative approaches. A creative mind is always seeking improvements."

If your current company shut down today, what would you do to adapt quickly?

"If my current company shut down today I would tap into my network, call everyone I knew, and look for a company that needed someone with my skillset. I wouldn't let it get me down, and I would certainly hit the ground running in my job search."

The interviewer would like to know more about your ability to adapt and thrive, in stressful situations. This question is hypothetical, so you'll likely need to use your imagination when answering. "I feel best when I know how my hard work has positively impacted another person. In my current role, our broadcast director will often share our client satisfaction surveys in our office meetings. If my name is mentioned, I cannot help but grin from ear to ear."

What are the most significant differences between satellite radio and streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music?

"I have been learning a lot about SiriusXM and how it's business is being affected by music streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. Interestingly, I found that satellite radio is much more profitable than streaming services. Reports say that Spotify loses nearly half a billion dollars every year where satellite radio companies profit billions upon billions per year. I believe these earnings have to do with the fact that satellite radio offers more exclusivity to certain shows, music, and stations. SiriusXM, as an example, has exclusive rights to the Howard Stern show, which earns a healthy profit and loyal audience."

There are so many ways to listen to your favorite music these days. The interviewer is looking for your level of knowledge when it comes to satellite radio versus popular streaming services. Do some reading online to see if you can learn about the ways these sources of audio broadcasting are competing.

"I believe that it's much easier for satellite radio companies to earn a profit versus other streaming companies. Today, satellite radio services come with nearly every car that people purchase in the US and Canada. Also, the live DJ's offered are some of the top talents in the world, giving a unique listening experience that streaming services cannot deliver."

How would you explain satellite radio, in a nutshell?

"I have worked with satellite radio and satellite television in the past and can say with full confidence that my knowledge of how satellite radio works, is quite robust. In a nutshell, a satellite radio station will transmit much stronger audio signals than a traditional radio station, making the broadcast available to a much broader range of listeners. The ground-based signal transmits to multiple satellites that are orbiting the earth."

The interviewer would like to see that you have a solid understanding of the concept of satellite radio. Whether you are working for SiriusXM in a sales, administrative, or technical role, you should be able to explain their business a little bit. "Although I am new to the satellite radio industry, I have worked in traditional radio media in the past. These signals are transmitted from a station to a satellite orbiting our planet. It's all very fascinating, and I look forward to learning more from SiriusXM."

"The reporting and analytics capabilities of an advertising platform is crucial as companies are looking to ensure their advertising efforts are effective and grabbing a great ROI. Beyond the basic measures such as conversion rates, I believe it is important that an advertising platform can integrate a variety of data. This data includes things such as geographic and demographic data for different advertising channels. This data allows companies to understand the customer journey better. Based on my research, all of these capabilities come with SiriusXM's advertising platform and much more."

Reporting and analytics capabilities are easily one of the essential features of an advertising platform. Your answer to this question should show your understanding of the reporting and analytics capabilities of advertising platforms in general, and particularly with that of satellite radio and SiriusXM.

"An important feature from an analytics and reporting perspective is the ability to customize reports and integrate data. The higher the level of customization offered to advertisers, the better they will be able to evaluate the advertising efforts unique to their business. The advertising platform offered by SiriusXM offers robust reporting and analytics capabilities that can be customized based on the client's needs."

In your opinion, what is the most influential form of media today?

"I feel that the most influential forms of media today are social media, online video, and radio content; such as the content provided by SiriusXM. As a whole, the human race wants fast, easy to consume, entertainment news. Our rate of content consumption is unprecedented, and the fastest way to access it is through online sources."

Have a meaningful conversation with the interviewer on media influence. With so many forms of media out there, which do you feel is the most influential at the moment? Be sure to back your answer.

"There are many important forms of media today - so many, in fact, that people seem to be getting overwhelmed. I would say that television and radio, namely satellite radio, is at the top when it comes to the number of people influenced and the quality of the content distributed. Most people have satellite radio in their cars, and many people go home after work to watch the news or their favorite cable TV show."

How has on-demand video streaming changed the way you consume content?

"I watch a lot of on-demand video streaming through sources such as SiriusXM, YouTube, Netflix, and even IGTV. I believe that on-demand video streaming saves me a lot of time as it's now effortless to search for, and find, the videos that I want to watch. I also find that I pay more attention to ads since they are more interesting and relevant than many of the ads seen on television."

The interviewer is curious how often you stream content versus using more traditional broadcasting methods to consume your content. Share how the introduction of on-demand video streaming has changed the way you watch your favorite shows, look for videos, and even how you pay attention to media advertising.

"On-demand video streaming certainly simplifies life; however, it puts me on my device more than ever. I like to consume content in smaller bits now, but that also means picking up my phone or tablet more often during the day. I think that streaming reduces the time I spend watching commercials, but the ads that I do see are much more targeted and relevant to me."

Companies have several different advertising platforms to choose from. What skills would you bring that would help SiriusXM remain a competitive option in this industry?

"With my experience working on advertising platforms, I am confident that my skills can help SiriusXM remain a strong competitor in the industry. For example, my knowledge of competing advertising platforms gives me insight into the differences between SiriusXM's advertising platform and that of other companies. Also, my analytical skills will help SiriusXM build more robust analytical and reporting capabilities and offer higher levels of customizations for clients."

The interviewers at SiriusXM would like to understand what skills you would bring to the position and if they match the company's needs. "I feel that a consumer should choose SiriusXM over other companies for video streaming services because you are often first-to-market with popular content. I trust that SiriusXM will always have what I am looking for."

"Over the years, I have learned how to effectively communicate with team members and clients having a wide variety of backgrounds. I have worked on many projects with marketing teams that included members without any technical background. Effective communication in these types of scenarios requires us to use language and terms that both groups would understand. Working at SiriusXM, I know I will continue to learn more about media and marketing."

Communication skills are of the utmost importance at SiriusXM, both within the technical departments as well as company-wide and with external clients in the marketing field. Hiring managers want to know how you would define 'effective communication skills' to see if it matches what they are looking for when filling this role.In your response, go beyond the basic canned response such as 'good listener.' Think of productive cross-functional teams that you have worked on and how communication was a vital part of the team's success. "My experience with working in teams has given me the opportunity to become a more effective communicator. I learned that the perspective I take when working on a cross-functional project affects the way I communicate. It is important to view the project from other team members' perspectives, specifically those from other groups. Working on Sirius XM's advertising tools, I know I will be able to 'think outside the box' of my own responsibilities to better communicate and collaborate with team members from other groups."

What do you know about radio and broadcast regulations?

"I have worked within FCC regulations a bit throughout my career. I understand there are different regulations for satellite radio versus traditional broadcast methods such as retransmission consent, false or misleading advertising, sponsorship identification, and disclosure. Currently, I am taking a course in writing fundamentals for media which will be a great help in this role with SiriusXM."

Where do you see satellite radio services growing over the next three years?

"I believe that satellite radio services, like those offered by SiriusXM, will continue to grow over the next three years. With nearly 75% of new vehicles coming equipped with free trials to satellite radio services, I think more car manufacturers will jump on board, realizing how many people love to have commercial free, fresh content with talented DJ's at their fingertips, without the use of cellular data."

You may not realize it, but satellite radio services continue to grow exponentially, even though streaming services seem to be taking over at a fast rate. The fact is, satellite radio has a much broader reach while earning a lot more profit. Discuss where you see satellite radio services going in the next three years.

"In the future of satellite radio, I believe we will see more exclusive and original content, that will not be available anywhere without a subscription. The industry has remained highly profitable. I appreciate that satellite radio efforts have pivoted and remained competitive even with music streaming services becoming increasingly popular."

What do you know about the part that AI and Machine Learning play when it comes to on-demand video streaming?

"I recently attended the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas where I was able to get an insiders' peek at how AI and machine learning are forming streaming services. One of the factors that stood out to me is the fact that AI helps greatly with precise content curation. This assistance is not limited to on-demand video streaming but also more traditional forms of broadcasting, media, and entertainment."

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are both very hot topics in technology, and the hiring authority would like to see awareness when it comes to what's happening in the world of AI and how it relates to on-demand video streaming. Some options for answering this question include referring to a press release by SiriusXM, discussing how they embrace AI technology to improve their services. "I have used my analytical skills frequently while working in consumer advertising. My prior positions have been primarily in the creative departments of agencies. Working in a creative role, I have used research data to determine the direction of ad content. Using information regarding the target market also affects our decisions on ad timing, copy, and messaging."

Although some media conglomerates may use data more frequently than others, SiriusXM believes its important for anyone working in media to have excellent analytical skills. Whether your experience is directly or indirectly related to data analysis or research, talk about how you utilized your analytical skills to decide your position. If possible, share details of a specific project where you used data or conducted research to make a well-informed decision.

"Analytical skills have been critical in my role as a media buyer. I use data to select vehicles on which to run advertisements. Also, I analyze data to determine the timing and frequency of these media purchases. Data analysis in media buying is continuous as we evaluate our media vehicles and channels on an ongoing basis. For instance, I once assumed a particular social media platform would be a perfect media vehicle for my client's teen target market. After a thorough analysis of available data, I learned that the client's budget would not be well spent using that platform."

How do you think video-on-demand services are affecting the media advertising industry?

"I believe that video-on-demand services are hugely affecting the media advertising industry. People have changed how they consume media, and advertisers have had to adapt. Look at YouTube, and their 15-second ads played before a video loads. Consumers now watch commercials on mobile and social networking sites versus on television between episodes of their favorite sitcom. Advertisers have had to make a significant pivot over the last few years, leaving those unwilling to adapt, in the dust. I appreciate that SiriusXM offers a range of advertising opportunities for advertisers to remain competitive."

The interviewer would like to see that you have insight when it comes to the video streaming industry, and how it's changing the way companies advertise. Raymond James, a financial services firm, conducted an important survey in 2017 showing that 40% of people asked, said they choose video streaming over traditional television, to avoid commercials. This statistic indicates that video streaming has a massive impact on the advertising industry. Give a thoughtful response, showing to the interviewer that you have a keen interest in what's happening in the world of media, today.

"I believe that the convenience of video-on-demand has made people impatient when it comes to how they digest advertising. The quick 3 second blurbs we see now, on social networking sites, mean that advertisers have to be incredibly sharp in their messaging. I think this is an excellent change, ensuring that advertisers spend their dollars wisely, getting the best message out to consumers in as short of time as possible."

What are your 3 favorite forms of entertainment?

"My favorite forms of entertainment have always been reality tv, podcasts, and celebrity-based news. I have always wanted to become a gossip columnist and find that these forms of entertainment spark my creativity and keep me informed on trends in the media."

"There are so many great forms of entertainment media available to us. I am more traditional and would say that my favorite forms still include print media, documentaries, podcasts, and radio shows like the ones available at SiriusXM."

Based on your experience with advertiser software and platforms, what product capabilities and features do you find to be the most important?

"Search capabilities and real-time tracking are valuable and essential features to advertisers. Extensive search capabilities give advertisers the ability to target their spend better. For example, companies should be able to find stats based on age and geographic criteria to ensure their marketing efforts are well-targeted. Real-time tracking provides advertisers with up-to-date data that allows them to make well-informed decisions promptly."

It is essential to have a strong overall understanding of the types of features or capabilities that advertisers find useful as they conduct their business with SiriusXM. Your knowledge will help SiriusXM ensure their advertising products are continually meeting the needs of their current and future customers. In addition to identifying the capabilities and features that you find essential, briefly explain why a particular feature/capability would be of value to the users. If applicable, include any experience you may have had building or improving these type of features/capabilities.

"As more companies enter the global market, tools that can deal with multiple languages and currencies becomes essential. This feature globally expands opportunities for both advertisers and companies utilizing affiliate marketing. Also, real-time reporting is vital, particularly as companies are looking to make marketing budget decisions quickly and efficiently. With real-time reporting, companies do not have to worry about lag times between data being captured and made available for analyses. Although I do not have specific experience working on these two product features, I am confident my database experience will help SiriusXM continually improve its products and expands their capabilities."

Technological capabilities of advertising platforms are constantly changing. How do you ensure you are aware of all the new advertising platform developments?

"The competitive landscape for advertising platforms is constantly changing, so I find it is important to remain current with new products and service offerings. Regularly, I set aside time to read industry-specific news where I learn about new companies entering the media and entertainment industry and the products they offer. Also, I look for opportunities to attend conferences and training sessions where I learn of emerging technologies related to advertising platforms. These opportunities also allow me to network and learn from my industry peers."

Most companies competing in the media and entertainment industry understand the importance of professional growth concerning product-specific technical knowledge. The interviewer at SiriusXM would like to know that you find continued learning important. They want to see how you go about remaining current with competitive offerings and new technologies. This effort may include both formal and informal learning opportunities. Be sure to specify any proactive measures you take to educate yourself continually.

"In addition to attending industry conferences and training seminars, I also find the time to research which advertising platforms my competitors are using. I also believe it may help SiriusXM's teams generate ideas for new offerings of its own."

Do you have previous experience in the audio entertainment industry?

"I have worked in traditional broadcast for about five years now, first as a part-time program writer, and then in sales. Through this time I learned a lot about listener behavior and preferences. I also have a full understanding of how advertising efforts work in the audio entertainment industry. I look forward to bringing this experience and expertise to work at SiriusXM."

What are your thoughts on the way media is rated for the public (IE: PG, 14A, NR, Mature)?

"Media ratings have most definitely loosened over the years. What used to be rated 14A is now often classified as PG. I feel this is because our kids and youth are exposed to so much more now than we ever were as kids and we are becoming desensitized. I do wish that some guidelines would remain tighter, especially surrounding violent content."

Media ratings have changed a great deal over the years, and the interviewer would like to know your thoughts on this. Be sure to keep your answer productive and thoughtful.

"Because I am newer to the media industry, I would need to conduct more analysis on ratings before I could give you a fully researched answer. With that said, I feel that the majority of media I am exposed to seem to be rated adequately, and clearly. I think it's important for listeners and viewers and consumers to easily see ratings before making their decision on whether or not it's appropriate for them."
