"I am an avid reader. Whether it's a trade publication or an autobiography, I love learning and growing. My nose is almost always buried in a book."

The interviewer asks this question to gain a more casual insight into your personality, interests, and motivators. It is important for employees to have stress-relievers outside of work to keep their stress levels down and their productivity up while at work.

Feel free to share the hobbies and interests that make you seem interesting and affable. Find relatable points of common interest. The less guarded you are about your personal life, the more it shows you'll be able to foster interpersonal work relationships. Your interviewer will take this into consideration when they are evaluating your fit into the team.

Stay away from anything that might present a conflict. If you have a bowling league that requires you to take a lot of time off work or side business you are trying to build, you should avoid discussing those.

"I spend just about every spare minute with my wife and my cat. Sometimes both. Otherwise, I'm at the gym listening to podcasts. How about you?"

On a scale from 1 to 10, how honest are you?

"I consider myself extraordinarily honest with others when appropriate. Of course, if I had a rough weekend because of personal reasons, like fighting with my spouse over mundane tasks, I'd keep that to myself. Other than that, I am honest with others when appropriate. I would rate my honesty at a 10."

How you present yourself will offer the interviewer insight into the makeup of your personality. They want to determine if you're overconfident in your answer or modest. Take the time to consider the question before giving your answer.

This could be a tricky question as nobody is 100% honest. This question is about your self-perception. Like Einstien said, "The more I learn, the more I realize how little I understand." Explaining that you try to be as honest with yourself as possible, especially when confronted with emotionally confusing situations, is key.

Focusing on how honest you are with others should be avoided. The last thing you want to do is come across as dishonest or unethical in any way.

"When we try to process overwhelming or confusing situations, it's natural to jump to assumptions to explain an unknowable situation. One time I had a coworker lash out at me, and I took it personally. I wondered what I could've done that made them treat me that way, but it had nothing to do with me. They were having personal issues and later apologized. When I looked for an explanation for their behavior, I wasn't being honest with myself. But I think that's human. Of course, things happen. I try to be as honest and emotionally mature as I can be. So, I would rate my honesty at a 10."

How do you balance life and work?

"I think it's important to respect boundaries, whether these are boundaries I've set or ones that others set. I've worked with people who'd duck out of work and be on the phone trying to solve personal issues while they were on the clock. I've also had friends whose personal relationships because of a toxic work environment. My spouse has made it very clear I shouldn't talk about work when I get home. Instead, we discuss matters surrounding our lives together as a couple. The same thing goes with work. When I am at work, and I am getting paid for my time and my skills, I focus solely on my job."

How you answer this question will offer the interviewer insight into how you handle stress, either at work or home. If you are continually stressed out at work, you'll likely burn out faster, and your performance will suffer. If you are stressed out in your personal life, it could affect your performance at work.

Be confident in your answer. Emotional maturity goes a long way and is integral to leadership. Demonstrate that you've stricken a balance between both worlds through your approach to life. Offer an anecdote to drive it home.

Talk to the interviewer about how you can maintain a balance between your work and home life. It's okay if you occasionally have to take your work home with you or if you need to take time off of work. The interviewer wants to know how you achieve that balance.

"I find that, with the right company, it's pretty simple to balance life and work. When I enjoy what I do, it doesn't feel like a chore. When I am at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and ensure that I refuel before the work week begins. The perfect balance of work and life is difficult to achieve 100% of the time; however, I feel that to achieve a satisfactory balance, one must have hobbies outside of the workplace that they find fulfilling. These don't have to take up a lot of time, but they should energize you. I like to go mountain biking on the weekends."

How would your co-workers describe your attention to detail?

"My co-workers would describe my attention to detail as very strong. I can point out spelling discrepancies in communication, and l notice the small things. I look at the big-picture as well, but I've always had a knack for the details. My attention to detail was a point of conversation in my last performance review. My manager was pleased with the level of detail I put into a large project recently. I put a lot of pride into my work, and it shows in everything I do."

How you perceive yourself may differ from how others perceive you. Keep your answers consistent. How you answer this question will give the interviewer insight into your self-awareness and how you identify your self-assessment and growth opportunities.

It is always best to support your reply with a real-life example. Talk to the interviewer about your level of attentiveness when it comes to details on the job. If this is one of your strengths, offer examples of how your attention to detail benefitted the team

"I think they'd say my attention to detail is about average, but they'd follow that up with how I'm the go-to clutch player everyone wants on their team. Any time our department is divided into groups for multiple projects, everyone fights for me to be on their team because of my cheerful disposition and the speed and accuracy of my work. I motivate those who are working around me. No one ever said you can't have a good time and get the job done all at the same time."

What was the most challenging aspect of your previous job? How did you overcome it?

"The most challenging aspect of my last job was troubleshooting some of the older technology we worked with. We needed some serious upgrades, but they weren't in the budget. Learning how to work around this problem was quite a challenge, but I learned by referring to old manuals and online forums. I became one of the strongest users of this program in our entire office! I quickly became the go-to person when anyone had questions about the technology."

Your answer to this question will give the interviewer insight into what you perceive as a challenge. It will also show the interviewer how you overcome a challenge. Some things continue to challenge us, paving the road for self-growth.

Sometimes the greatest workplace challenge is a difficult task that puts you outside of your comfort zone. It could be something that requires skills you haven't mastered yet. "I understand that your work environment is very collaborative. I come from a similar environment."

"I believe that this interview has been quite informative, and I am happy with my performance. Is there anything I can clarify for you from our conversation? I noticed at one point you said you were surprised by my answer. I hope that was a good thing."

The interviewer wants to see how you view your performance. Your answer will also demonstrate how effective your communication skills are.

"I think my strengths are in my perceptiveness and ability to be observant of the needs of others. These strengths are part of what makes me an excellent performer in a client-facing role."

How you perceive yourself may differ from how others perceive you. Throughout the interview process, make sure your answers remain consistent. The interviewer wants to see that you take pride in your work.

Provide the personal strengths you feel make you excellent at your job. Offer an example of a time your efforts were recognized by your team. Strengths can be skills or qualities that allow you to overcome difficult circumstances or accomplish challenging tasks. What do you perceive as your greatest weakness?

"I can be hard on myself. This often comes up in my reviews. Even the toughest bosses I've had said they don't push me too hard because they know I'm pushing myself harder than they ever would. In the past, this caused me to trip myself up, but I've gotten better."

"I tend to over-analyze data. I have excellent attention to detail. Anytime I noticed anything that caused me to question what I was looking at, I'd bring it to the attention of my superiors. My old boss said I was over-communicative. I've gotten better at being more discerning with what I bring to my superiors' attention these days, instead of distracting them with every discrepancy I found."

Tell me about your greatest work related accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating university as an honors student while working full time in a related field. This showed me that I can dedicate myself to my career and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and be recognized for my dedication."

Talking about your greatest accomplishment will give the interviewer a strong idea of where you place your values. It will also show the interviewer more about your personality. Your answer will reveal why you're proud of the example you provide and how it fits into your career goals, as well as what motivates you.

It is okay to brag a little bit when answering this question. Show that you are proud of yourself and your career accomplishments. Describe how this achievement acts as a milestone towards your goals.

The road to self-improvement is never-ending. Once you offer your example, offer where you hope this achievement will lead you on your path.

"I would have to say my greatest accomplishment was reducing departmental costs by 25% by thoroughly reviewing packing slips and comparing them to invoices and contract terms for accuracy."

"My greatest work-related accomplishment is earning the ability to train new incoming classes due to my understanding of the job requirements and internal policies. Because of my efficiency and accuracy, I was requested to train new hires on our procedures and policies. I felt like I made a direct impact that was recognized by upper management."

Typical "corporate culture" is something that we work to avoid here at Siemens. Tell me about your ideal workplace culture.

"I am seeking a role with an organization like Siemens where employees matter. This means fair wages, regular opportunities for continued education, and strong internal growth opportunities."

The answer to this question is in the question if you've done your homework. The interviewer is asking this question with a "finish this sentence" framework.

Exhibit your knowledge of the company. Share not only your understanding of why this is important to Siemen's, but your understanding of the culture they've built, and embrace not only why they're proud of this, but why you want to be a part of it.

Workplace culture is incredibly important since we spend so much time at work. Talk to the interviewer about what your ideal workplace culture looks like in a way that aligns with the culture they've prided themselves on building. Share with the interviewer the factors that would make you want to stay with Siemens long-term.

"My ideal workplace would be a place where active learning is encouraged, positivity is mainstream, and enough autonomy is given to ensure that I can work to the best of my ability. I also would like a workplace that provides internal growth opportunities and fair wages."

We have a few strong competitors. In your opinion, what does Siemens do to stand out from the rest?

"I've researched Siemens online and found a common theme in the reviews, comments, and news articles surrounding the fairness you offer your employees. You have strong benefits programs and offer multiple growth opportunities in all departments. This seems like a positive place to work. Your competitors didn't stand out in that area."

Your interviewer wants to know how familiar you are with their brand. Branding is the identity and personality of a company. It is also their culture, and they want to see how well you'll fit into their culture.

Before your interview, it is important that you not only research Siemens but also its competitors. Describe how their brand sets itself apart from others.

You should not say, "Siemens is the best. They've been around for a long time. No one does it better. No one." Avoid vague oversimplifications. Focus on the brand and share your understanding of their culture and brand.

"I believe that Siemens stands out from the rest through clear branding and marketing strategies, which your target market relates to. I look forward to joining an organization with such great focus."

"What Siemens does that I think helps them stand out from the rest is that their changes are preemptive. I see many large corporations that bring about change AFTER an issue arises. Siemens has, of course, learned from direct issues, but there have been changes that you implemented that were preemptive. There was a quote on the website that said, "only those who are able to change can control their future," and I believe that sentiment is what keeps this company going after 170 years."

Siemens puts a lot of focus on our local and global impact, so we seek to hire those with the same values. What do you know about our company values, and how do they align with your personal values?

"I've spent time volunteering with local organizations. This includes the animal shelter, the children's hospital, and our local food bank. I believe that no matter how busy we are, we always have time to give back. I have researched Seimens's involvement in charities. Your values and interest in your global impact are impressive. It's one of the reasons I am so attracted to your organization."

The interviewer is assessing the extent to which you researched the position. It is crucial to understand the position and the company you're applying for.

It is very important to research Siemens in great detail before your interview. Research the company, its core values, and the keywords used on the website and in the mission statement. Incorporate those components in your answer. Discuss your values and how they align with the values at Siemens.

Be prepared to discuss the global efforts currently underway and research any local charity efforts that Siemens supports. Discuss these points with enthusiasm. Demonstrate a desire to be a part of those efforts.

One of the things that I appreciate about Siemens is the importance that they place on health and safety, and having a zero harm culture. Through my corporate responsibility module at uni, I have been able to learn about some companies that didn't view health and safety as a priority and the devastating effects that could have."

Have you ever been employed through a company merger or acquisition? If so, tell me about your experience.

"I went through a merger in 2010 with Company ABC. I believe that the leadership team did the best they could. I was lucky enough to stay on board with the company, and my experience during the transition was certainly eye-opening. I learned a lot through the process."

Your interviewer wants to understand your attitude about changes in a corporate environment. When your work history includes employment with large companies and/or conglomerate corporations, there is a high chance that you have experienced a merger or acquisition of some sort. Talk to the interviewer about your experience.

Offer your experience objectively. Omit emotional details. Describe the situation, what unfolded, and your understanding of why. If you haven't experienced this, offer your understanding of why they'd ask this question, your insights into what that may look like, and ask clarifying questions.

Perhaps you have been laid off through a process such as this. Maintain a positive attitude. Avoid speaking negatively about previous employers. Change is a part of life, and exhibiting a mature understanding of this goes a long way.

"I've been fortunate. I understand mergers and acquisitions can be part of a company's culture. Are there any such changes anticipated in the near future with the company? What will that look like?"

What aspect of your last job did you like most? Least?

"I have nothing but good feelings about that position and the team I worked with. I feel grateful for the experience. Ultimately, it moved me along my career path. I loved how everyone supported each other. They've encouraged my decision to leave the company and sincerely expressed that they're sad to see me go. It's that support and the lessons I learned that helped get me to where I am today. My least favorite part of the job was leaving. They are a great group, and parting is such sweet sorrow."

The interviewer asks this question to understand what motivates you, what distracts you, and what kind of work environment might suit you best. Interviewers often look for a genuine answer.

Keep your answer focused on you and what you loved about your last job. When it comes to what you liked least, be honest, but stay focused on the positives.

Avoid laying blame on former colleagues for what you liked least. Don't hold everyone you work with to unrealistic standards or expectations. Communicating such points will reflect more poorly on you than on them.

"I believe micro-breaks are integral to productivity and avoiding burnout. At my last job, they encouraged micro-breaks and gave us quite a few of them throughout the day. I loved that, but I am not a fan of the water cooler. I know it sounds cliche, but everyone congregates around the water cooler. Most of the time, they talk about sports or the weather. I'm not much of a sports fan and don't find talking about the weather very interesting. So, I dodge the water cooler and go for a quick walk on my microbreaks. I love having a quick change in environment, rain or shine."

Discuss a time you made a big mistake and explain your approach to finding a solution.

"I overheard our team leaders discussing the need for a new CSM software. I'd been exploring it recently and thought I had the solution. I downloaded the software to test it and then suggest it to our leaders, wanting to help. Unfortunately, I accidentally downloaded a virus that affected our IT department. Before it got too out of control, I explained what happened right away to my supervisor. Luckily, they were able to contain the virus, and no damage was done."

Making mistakes is human. How we deal with and remedy a mistake comes down to exercising good judgment and knowing when asking for help is appropriate. Many times, a person might feel fear of being judged for a mistake they've made.

Consider the needs of the workplace. When you provide your example, explain the reasons behind your course of action. If you tried to fix the mistake before bringing it to the attention of your superiors, explain why. In this scenario, a good reason would be to not distract your supervisors from important matters they were dealing with, and it was simpler and less exhaustive of the company's resources for you to fix it yourself. If you brought the mistake to their attention, explain that it would've cost the workplace more to have you fix it, whereas the issue could be solved by a superior in a matter of minutes.

You might not tell the interviewer that you neglected to take responsibility for your mistake, your answer could send that message. Choose your reasons and words wisely. How you reacted should be in the best interest of the company. Owning your mistake shows character and integrity.

"I arrived at work early before anyone else was there. When I was in the hall, I tripped, and while reaching up to grab something to save myself from the fall, I accidentally grabbed the fire alarm. Several others arrived just then, and it created quite the panic. Knowing that the fire department could charge us for false fire alarms, I hurriedly called them and explained it was a false alarm. When I went back out to the parking lot, I found my supervisor on the phone, calling the fire department out again. I hurriedly explained what had happened. They tried to cancel a second time, but the fire truck was already pulling up. We got charged for the false alarm. I offered to pay for it, but my boss refused. Accidents happen, they said."

Can you tell us about a time you had to bring a problem with a coworker's performance to the attention of management?

"I had a co-worker who seemed to be struggling. They seemed sleep-deprived, and their attention to detail wasn't what it once was. I tried to talk to them about it, but they weren't forthcoming about what was going on. I reviewed their work, just to help them out, and fixed a lot of mistakes. It got so bad that I decided it was time to bring it to the attention of my supervisor. They pulled us both outside and gave me a chance to speak first. It turns out they had some pretty serious health issues. They didn't want to miss work because they needed to maintain their hours to continue getting their health benefits. That's when our supervisor let us know they had a program for situations like this and that they wouldn't lose their benefits for missing work."

Situations like this can be sensitive and affect how others on your team perceive you. The interviewer wants to know how you handled such situations and your reasoning for bringing attention to the situation.

Explain that you were working in the interest of all involved parties. Mention the welfare of your coworker, the needs of the team, and the necessity of bringing it to your superiors in your example.

Some employees might be on the lookout for coworkers' mistakes. Their motive for bringing a mistake to the attention of management might be out of self-gain. Avoid examples where bringing others' mistakes to light might come across as intending to make yourself look better.

"One summer in college, I took a non-profit construction job helping with low-income housing. I was interested in the project management side of things. I worked with this person who wanted to learn how to refurbish old windows. The problem was, they kept breaking the glass panes. After a while, they were on a 100% shattering rate, and it was costing the project money. I decided it wasn't my choice or theirs to determine if they were the best fit for that task. I brought it to the attention of the project leader. They put that person on installing doors instead, and they did a great job. Doors are harder to break."

What made you decide to apply for this position?

"I love how your company fosters innovation. Your company is at the forefront. You even say your people are thinkers, dreamers, and doers. That's me!"

Your interviewers have read your resume and cover letter. You've had a quick chat to get acquainted. Now they want to know what makes you feel uniquely qualified, what attracted you to apply for this position, and why you want to work for them.

Take what you've found while researching this company, and highlight the things which align with your personality and goals. Go deeper about your qualifications, the aspects of the job you are most attracted to, and how that came across through their job posting, along with the company's values.

If you've taken the time to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the brand culture, now is your time to focus on why you are a good fit. Expressing that you want to work for them and why you want to work for them goes a long way.

"In every job I've had, I've done the best I could, pretending it was my company. That's Siemen's model, encouraging collaboration. That's something I want to be a part of."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year, plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year, my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

This question can come up anywhere in the interview, but it more commonly comes towards the end. This not only gauges your expectations but your self-awareness of how the interview has gone. This is where you'll show your hand and how you not only value yourself but how realistic your expectations are. Your expectations may be unrealistic, or perhaps they sell you short. Either can be revealing with your career trajectory.

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Your current earnings and where you feel you are on your career path compared to where your ultimate career goals are heading should give you a reasonable expectation of what you should ask for. Be open, realistic, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary-based questions arise.

Find a realistic goal regarding salary by doing your research. Be wary of selling yourself short. Don't aim too high either.

"I am currently making $100,000 per year with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

Can you give me an example of a time you felt you weren't recognized for your achievements? How did you deal with it?

"I noticed that the growth opportunities that my employer brought up in my reviews were areas I already succeeded in. I brought it to the attention of another supervisor, and they said if no one notices what I'm doing, then I haven't done it. So, I made more of an effort to bring attention to my accomplishments. I'd inform management so they knew the work I'd done and that I was looking for more work. Soon, I was named employee of the month, and my next review was glowing. I learned that what they said was true. Perception is reality. I was a stealth worker before, but I'm not anymore."

Businesses often have to deal with staff who don't feel their efforts are properly recognized. A wide variety of factors may come into play. Your interviewer asks this question to understand your perspective on the contributions you have to offer and what you feel you're owed.

Describe what you feel was unrecognized in your performance. Then, explain why you feel your efforts went unnoticed. Discuss what solutions were reached, if any.

Avoid bad-mouthing your previous employers or painting yourself a victim. Discuss the situation objectively.

"I had a co-worker who struggled with an aspect of their job. They didn't receive proper training, and no one was helping them. I took it upon myself to tutor them and share what I learned along the way. I taught them the stuff no one taught me. They were praised and rewarded for the significant uptick in their performance. No one knew I helped them out. I was fine with that. I wasn't looking for anything beyond doing the right thing. Seeing them succeed was reward enough for me."

Because Siemens is geographically widespread, we have to accommodate a variety of time zones. Do you have experience working with clients and co-workers in multiple time zones?

"In my current position, I collaborate with our offices in the U.S., Canada, Scotland, and Finland. It was a struggle at first to remember what day and time others were working in; however, I now have a great desktop application that tracks this for me."

This question is about more than work experience. Employees' moods may vary depending on the time of day. Additionally, there are cultural components to take into consideration as well, as Siemens is an international company. This question touches on your communication and customer services skills. Strong communication skills rely on seeking a deeper understanding and looking for clarification of anything you don't fully understand.

If you weren't seen as a viable candidate, the company wouldn't interview you. The interviewer is allowing you to market yourself and explain what you have to offer and what sets you apart. The interviewer will be interested in how well you deliver that sales pitch and the confidence with which you deliver it.

Think about the variety of skills that you have and how those can benefit this employer, despite the industry. Explain what makes you an exemplary employee. I spread the word, refocused everyone's attention on the end goal, dispelled their fears, and shut the rumor mill down."
