It's like Nietzsche said, "be careful in casting out your demons, for you may be casting out that which is greatest within you."

"I would say however incremental, every inch forward towards any goal is a success. Even if that inch was simply learning something that could be used towards accomplishing a goal, it is still a success which is a greater success towards finding a way to constantly improve upon that progress, and making that next inch a mile."

So instead of allowing task paralysis to take hold, I just decided to problem-solve. I'd been toying with getting an overhead projector for some time, and used this as an excuse to finally justify the expense. By taking this route I was able to keep moving forward with my presentation and had a new overhead projector which I'd wanted for a long time, changing a stressful situation into a positive one where I had something exciting and new to look forward to, in both my professional and personal life. Not only was my presentation a success, but I was able to watch 'Run, Lola Run' projected on my wall at home, which was something I'd wanted for a long time."

Once through my training in that position, I hope to be growing within that organization, being mentored and accelerated toward our mutual goals. I have some charts with me that detail my plan if you'd like me to share."

"Aside from English, I speak a little Spanish and know enough German where I can tease apart enough to skate by when listening, though I don't speak it very well. I learned a bit of German long ago. It's amazing how similar to English it is. I feel like I could pick that one up pretty quickly."

"I read this article recently that revisits this question, but it changes from year to year, it seems to me. Personally, after giving this some thought, I've come to think that these are big challenges that will have to be addressed."

"The first greatest achievement of the human race was discovering and being able to control fire, the first innovation. So, I like to imagine that every goal is the spark of an idea set in motion. Every goal generates work, and some are closer and burn more brightly than others. So, I like to think that I am harnessing the power of fire, or ideas. Whichever burns the brightest and closest needs to be tended to first, then the next brightest. I don't like to say I am putting out fires, but rather harnessing the fire. So I look at task management through this lens. I look at everything that needs tending to, and evaluate which is burning brightest, and prioritize accordingly."

"I present my arguments well with clear communication. I ask for others' input, doing my best to anticipate what they might say, and have answers at the ready for every counterargument they might deliver. Basically, I convey I've thought it all through, and once it's established I have a strong track record to that effect, offering dialogue and compromise into the mix. These are the elements that make me an articulate and effectively persuasive person."

"I'm a true believer in the leveling principles of balance. I'd say I have a firm foot planted in both worlds. We all have days, depending on our needs, where we are more focused on team collaboration and the social elements it offers, and there are other times where a singular focus is required for the task on hand. But putting the needs of the work involved aside, I'd definitely say I am both interpersonal and analytical."

This is another common behavioral question aimed at determining where you fall on the scale of being an extrovert versus an introvert. For some, an analytical approach is more of a singular task, whereas interpersonal is more collaborative and team-oriented. Ideally, you'll want to strike a balance with both. "I would say I'm a very resourceful person. So I turn to the resources I have on hand any time I have to solve a complicated problem. That's the first step. Too often people can hit task paralysis and have trouble even getting started tackling the problem. So I reach for the closest resource just to get the ball rolling, and proceed accordingly; taking the wisest route I can afford, depending on how pressing the complicated problem in question might be."

The interviewer wants to know if you think outside the box or ask for help when you are stuck with a complicated problem. It will offer them insights as to how resourceful you are as well as how self-reliant you are in your work versus asking your supervisor for help every five minutes, punting your work onto them and distracting them from their work, when it may have been something you could have handled on your own. "This has nothing to do with work really, but my parents were struggling between five different health insurance plans. There were a lot of cost differentials between coinsurance, copays, deductibles, premiums, and the tiers of in-network versus out-of-network costs. It was a lot for the average citizen to tease apart for choosing the most cost-effective plan. Not to mention, how one justifies the costs on a personal level, monthly or annually, really depends on the individual. So I sat down with my parents and went over their healthcare needs for the last three years and projected a slightly increased average of their healthcare needs for the next year. I then helped them come up with a livable budgeting plan and created a chart for the total cost of those needs across all tiers, coinsurance, copays, deductibles, and premiums. It was far more work than anyone should be expected to do, but in the end, I think I saved them thousands of dollars in healthcare costs annually."

If I still wasn't exactly sure why the inefficiency exists, whether by design or not, I'd follow the appropriate channels and share my discovery with all sorts of questions. This way, when presenting it, I'm exhibiting a mature thought process, strong attention to detail, and an active inquisitiveness thinking of the greater good of the team. Having said that, let me give you of a recent example."

On one hand, I want to protect assets. On the other, I don't want to burden my superiors with my mistake, distracting them from their priorities. So I look at it from a task management perspective. I determine the wisest course of action and proceed accordingly. Let me tell you about the last time I had to put this into practice."
