28 Shoppers Drug Mart Interview Questions & Answers
1. Take me through your career experience, including any experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?
How to Answer
For a retail role, it's always preferable that applicants have some retail experience, but that's not a requirement. The management team at Shoppers Drug Mart is more interested in your ability to provide great customer service and uphold the values of the company. Talk to the interviewer about how your career experience has prepared you for a retail position with Shoppers.
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I've only been working in retail for about six months, and so far I'm really happy that I made the transition into this industry. Before that, I was working in an IT support call center, where I learned plenty about excellent customer service and explaining complicated solutions over the phone, but I was really tired of the sedentary, isolated nature of the work. Making the transition to retail was difficult because I wasn't used to being on my feet all day or talking to customers in person, but I caught on really quickly, and now I love it."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

2. Tell me about a time that you disagreed with a supervisor.
How to Answer
We've worked hard to build a strong, healthy environment for our workers in our Shoppers Drug Mart stores. We believe that great teams are built around strong communication and an open exchange of ideas between mutually respectful parties. That's why we allow space for disagreements between managers and associates -- disagreements don't have to turn into arguments as long as everyone is respectful and kind. Have you ever had a disagreement with a supervisor? How did you approach that situation?
Written by Jordan Henry on September 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"For a long time, I was really afraid of approaching any supervisor about ideas or concerns I had that went against what they were saying, but recently I was in a situation where I really had an ethical problem with a decision that was made by my manager. I thought about it for a couple of days, and then I asked her if we could have a short meeting to discuss it. I told her about my concerns and the problems I had with her decision, and she was very gracious about it. She said she hadn't considered the situation from my perspective and was grateful that I had come directly to her to discuss it."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I was recently helping my manager reorganize the sales floor because we were set to install a huge new in-store display the next day, and we had a disagreement about how to approach the reorganization. We're both pretty stubborn people, but we've worked together for a long time and respect each other. We laughed off the tension, took a breath, and talked about our different ideas. We ended up combining our strategies and it worked out great!"

Written by Jordan Henry on September 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"When I first started working at my current job, I noticed that our waste levels were through the roof, and there was no system in place for recycling or reusing items. I did some research after work on local recycling programs, and then I came up with an idea to create a friendly competition with my coworkers to see who could recycle the most every quarter. I came up with a points and rewards system, then took the idea to my manager. She was thrilled with the idea and gave me ownership of the project, and we started seeing our waste levels go down dramatically. I think it brought us all closer as a team, too."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I'm really glad to hear that Shoppers values the opinions and ideas of all of its employees. I've worked for retailers in the past who were not at all interested in innovating or changing the status quo -- so I've never felt comfortable coming forward with an idea before. I'm a creative problem-solver, so I have a lot of ideas, and I'm happy to know that there's a format at Shoppers to bring my ideas to my manager when it's appropriate."

6. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
How to Answer
Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work in case something catches me by surprise. That way, I'm not stressed out if something happens because I've already planned for it in advance. The extra time I build into getting to work will give me time to contact my manager if I get delayed -- and if nothing else, it never hurts to arrive to work early!"
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

Talk to the interviewer about how you respond when a customer is rude to you.
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I'm a really empathetic person, so my first reaction to a rude customer is to wonder what's going on beneath the surface -- I truly believe that most people don't start their day planning to be rude or unkind to others. I don't let rudeness phase me; usually, when a customer is rude to me, I respond with even more hospitality and kindness. I think it shows that customer that we care about them, and it shows any other customers who see the interaction that we really value and respect each of our customers."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Rude customers don't bother me. I know that sometimes people just have a bad day and will lash out at whoever is closest. If a customer is rude to me directly, I just smile and continue to offer the same great service, and I'll give them a bit more space as well so they don't feel pressured."

Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Accountability is a personal value of mine, and it sometimes means doing the right thing even when it's hard. I've had to go to a manager in the past and tell her that I believed a coworker was stealing; it was a really hard situation because I don't want to be involved in a person losing their job, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I would do it again."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example

26. At Shoppers Drug Mart we have a very clear return policy. How would you handle a customer who was arguing with you about a potential return?
How to Answer
As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy, and keeping the needs of the company in mind as well.
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I think it's important to really hear what's going on behind a customer's complaint, whether they're expressing frustration about an attempted return or some other element of their shopping experience. A customer's frustration or upset is a signal to me to slow down and take the time to really listen. Most of the time, customers just want to know that their frustrations are heard and appreciated; if I stay positive, helpful, and understanding, usually the customer leaves feeling cared for even if they weren't able to return their ineligible item."
Written by Jordan Henry on September 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

1st Answer Example
"I'm really interested in the concept of Associate-Owners. I really value my community, so I'm always looking for ways to patronize local businesses instead of corporate monsters. I think I would really enjoy working at a company that's privately-owned and operated but backed by the experience and stability of a larger corporation."
