Written by Karrie Day on July 16th, 2023
1st Answer Example
"My greatest career accomplishment is the fact that, in my current company, I gained a promotion faster than anyone in the organization's entire history. I received accolades from the VP of Sales in front of the entire company, which was an extraordinary moment. Exceeding expectations, being promoted, and then moving financially ahead of where I initially expected, was exhilarating."
Written by Karrie Day on July 16th, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"One achievement that I am proud of is graduating University as an honors student while still working full time. This accomplishment showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and earn recognition for my dedication."
Written by Rachelle Enns
3rd Answer Example
"The operations team I currently manage was short-staffed last year due to a round of layoffs that affected our group. Our production targets did not change despite the loss of several key team members. I pulled everyone together and dedicated an afternoon to brainstorming creative ways to be more efficient. We restructured responsibilities and adjusted the order of operations for some of our tasks.
Not only did we meet our goals, but we exceeded them. The challenging part was finding creative ways to keep my team motivated while they were adjusting to all of the changes. I learned a lot about leadership and I am proud of that achievement. I know I will be able to show the same level of leadership in the face of adversity if hired here at Raytheon."

4. How would you build a relationship with someone who intimidates you?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Raytheon serves as a contractor on projects that are mission-critical and at times, are the difference between life and death. As a result, some of the clients, co-workers, and customers you might work with at Raytheon may carry intimidating titles or personalities. Your interviewer wants to know if you can overcome feelings of intimidation and build strong relationships regardless of the people you work with.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
How to Answer
We have all been in a situation where we find a co-worker, customer, classmate, or professor slightly intimidating. When you answer, clearly show the interviewer that you have the self-awareness needed to recognize when feelings of intimidation arise. One way to communicate this is by telling a brief story of a time you built a relationship with someone who intimidated you at first. You should include specific details of how you developed a relationship with this person. At the end of your response, remember to connect your relationship-building skills to how they will benefit Raytheon.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I had a boss a couple of years ago who was very intimidating. I enjoy strong personalities; however, she didn't smile very often and was a bit flat with her emotions, which is sometimes hard to navigate. I don't think she meant to be, so I would remind myself before speaking to her that she was human just like the rest of us. This approach helped me to communicate with her with much less intimidation."
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"As an engineer, I sometimes find myself intimidated when I am included in client meetings. I do not always have the business background information necessary to feel confident. Over time, I have learned that I am included because the attendees value my expertise. I ask questions when they discuss something I do not understand and they are typically willing to take the time to bring me up to speed. I think they realize that sharing information helps me to offer a higher quality response when I am asked for technical advice. Over time, we build trust and the relationship continues to evolve positively. I feel confident I would be able to take a similar approach here at Raytheon if hired."

5. Tell me about a time when you had to address an angry customer. What was the problem and how did you resolve it?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Behavioral questions like this are a likely candidate for any role that will interface directly with customers of Raytheon. While they are mostly known for US government contract work and their aerospace and defense solutions, Raytheon's customers represent a variety of industries including shipping, boating, auto, truck, packaging, and electronics.
The interviewer wants to know that you can professionally handle stressful or uncomfortable customer-related situations. Raytheon wants assurance you can de-escalate customer issues and deliver professional service on their behalf and on behalf of the clients who hire Raytheon as a contractor.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
How to Answer
Briefly describe a time you resolved a customer service issue. If possible, tell a story about a customer that Raytheon is known for working with, or another customer from the same industry.
Be sure to highlight your ability to remain patient and rational in the face of conflict. Focus the bulk of your response on the positive action you took and the resolution you came to with the customer rather than details of the conflict itself.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
1st Answer Example
"Last year, I worked in a customer support center of a company with many service complaints. As a Customer Care Representative, I had to navigate angry customer experiences multiple times each day. To cope, I took the stance that people who are upset want to be heard and respected. Ultimately, they want an effective resolution.
I would listen, empathize, and reassure the customer that I was there to support them and resolve the matter. If I needed to escalate the problem to a senior technician or tier two support team, I would explain what I was doing and when they would hear back. Our company consistently tracked net promoter scores, and I am proud to say that I successfully turned more detractors into promoters than anyone else in that organization."
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"Just last week, one of my DOD clients called because he was unhappy with a particular design we were creating. As the senior program manager responsible for the related project, it was up to me to fix the situation. I called the client and reassured him that we would review the specifications and partner with him to understand and address his concerns before commencing development.
After we spoke further, I realized he was feeling uncomfortable because he was not a part of the decision-making process as decided by some of the members of the project team. I remained patient, listened to his concerns, and reassured him that we would satisfy his requests. As a result of the conversation, we were back on track and delivered a stellar design in the end."

6. Tell me about a time when you worked with a person who did things very differently than you. How did you collaborate?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Since everyone's work style is unique, it can be challenging to collaborate with everyone 100% of the time. However, there are many roles at Raytheon that require team-based work a majority of the time. The interviewer wants assurance that you are a team player, regardless of personality or work style differences.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
How to Answer
The goal of your response is to describe your approach to collaborating with others while highlighting how your collaboration style will be a good match for the new team you'll be joining. Answer this question by telling the interviewer about a specific time you worked with someone who approached their tasks or communication style differently than you.
Behavioral-based interview questions that begin with 'Tell me about a time...' are best answered using the STAR method, and Raytheon interviews are likely to focus heavily on this type of question. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Organizing your response using this framework will ensure that you provide the interviewer with the right amount of information and detail to form a compelling answer. Outline the situation and describe why it was a challenge to collaborate with this person. Focus on describing the specific actions you took to ensure a successful collaboration.
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
Answer Example
"(Situation) My fellow administrator and I approach our work very differently. I prefer mapping out the situation and putting myself on a timeline, whereas she prefers to jump right into the task. (Task) After working on a few projects together, it became apparent that we needed to find a better balance between our two working styles. (Action) I called a private meeting where we openly discussed our differences. We agreed to split our tasks up and come together at the end of each day. We also agreed to keep the lines of communication open throughout the day. (Result) So far, this approach has resulted in a more streamlined process. As different as we are from each other, we both agree that as long as we get to the end goal together, it doesn't always matter how we got there."
Written by Christine Pasqueretta on July 24th, 2023
Marketing Example
"(Situation) I recently collaborated with an engineer who had a very different style of organizing and prioritizing work. I approach my work by scheduling meetings in advance and using lists. The engineer was rarely prepared for meetings and spent a great deal of time talking about their personal life. (Task) I believed that we could work well together if we had clear boundaries and expectations. As the technical lead on the project, it was up to me to outline these boundaries. (Action) I took it upon myself to speak to that person about our different styles and come to an agreement on how we could work best together. (Result) The engineer agreed and ended up adopting some of my organizational tools, and I learned from this person how to better embrace last-minute changes and creative pivots."
Written by Karrie Day on July 12th, 2023
Manager Example
"(Situation) When I began my most recent role, I replaced a manager who very much believed in a dictatorship management style. (Task) It was a huge challenge to undo the damage created among the team. (Action) Without too much disruption, I implemented a more relaxed management style. My team was so used to a stringent workplace that they resisted my methods at first. (Result) Once I developed trust as their manager, we were able to create a healthy workplace culture, and productivity increased by 24%."

7. Tell me about a time in which you were accountable for a professional mistake or missed deadline.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Behavioral questions about failure or mistakes are common and it is possible you will be asked one during your upcoming interview at Raytheon. Despite the commonplace nature of these questions, candidates frequently struggle to answer them effectively.
The motivation for asking this question is twofold. First, your interviewer wants to know how you handle yourself in the face of failure. Second, your interviewer is testing your ability to be vulnerable and authentic during your interview.
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
How to Answer
It is critical that you answer this question authentically. Raytheon develops sensitive technology and they seek employees with high levels of integrity. That said, your interview is not the time to expose all of your worst professional mistakes.
Describe a time in which you made a reasonable error or failure in the workplace. Walk your interviewer through what you learned from it and any steps you took to ensure that you would not make the same mistake in the future.
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I asked for an opportunity to demonstrate my leadership skills last year. I had been working for two years as an engineer and I felt taking on more leadership tasks would help me advance as a professional. I was assigned as a mentor for an intern working with our team for six months. I was responsible for assigning him tasks and checking his work.
When he first arrived he indicated that he had advanced knowledge of a specific technology we were working with. I gave him an assignment and let him run with it. He didn't ask any questions or indicate he was struggling, so I assumed he was getting everything done. I realized at the end of the week that he was not going to be able to complete the assignment and that he needed more guidance.
I worked with him directly and we completed the assignment together. I learned that it is important to check in frequently with someone you're mentoring or leading when they are new and you're unsure of their skill set and I have implemented that in my regular mentoring process now."
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"As a project manager, I am typically the face of accountability for my team. We missed a project deadline last year due to unforeseen technical challenges. While there wasn't a solid method to anticipate the struggles, the client was frustrated that we could not meet the original deadline. I communicated the issue as soon as it was known and made sure the team took steps to ensure that it would not happen again in the future. I also worked to find ways to speed up the timeline in other areas such as UAT and training, and the client was appreciative of my work to deliver the product as soon as possible despite the challenges."

How to Answer
Not every role offers the opportunity to invent new and exciting technology, but all roles offer an opportunity to improve processes and/or make adjustments that add value. Describe a time in which you tried something new that generated a benefit.
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"In my current role, one of the administrative teams that support an operations group spent a large number of hours every week chasing people down to answer questions necessary for executive reporting. The thought at the time was that the operations individuals involved didn't understand the process and the easiest way to meet the reporting needs was to ask them questions as needed.
I took a step back and looked for the root cause. I spoke with the operations team and they indicated that nobody had ever walked them through the reporting process and they we unclear on how their work fit into it. I set up a series of meetings to walk them through the executive reports and how they are calculated. I also trained them on some of our BI tools that allowed them to look at the numbers for their areas before they were compiled for the executive reports.
Taking the time to properly educate them and let them take an active role in the process resulted in a 60% reduction in the time the admins spent chasing down information week-to-week. My clients were grateful I took a think-outside-the-box approach as it led to significant time and cost savings."
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I have worked in a defense product assembly plant for the last two years. I noticed that a lot of time was spent moving certain pieces of equipment around between the various teams in our location. I went to my manager and asked if we could rethink the way we were using the equipment to reduce movement waste. He agreed and we devised a plan to arrange our work so that our team could have the equipment in the morning and the other team could have it in the afternoon. Our change was so successful that the managers of the second shift implemented the same change."

Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I have mentored several engineers throughout my career. I am a subject matter expert on a few specific technologies and they come to me regularly with challenges. Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I had an engineer on my team that is incredibly intelligent and talented, but he did not enjoy working in teams. He often kept important details to himself and did not engage when he saw his teammates struggling. The manager of his team wasn't addressing the issue and did his best to assign the engineer projects he could work on alone.
As an engineering director, I knew this approach was not serving the individual or his teams in the long run. I set up a meeting with the manager and revisited my approach to team culture. We discussed several options for helping the engineer learn to engage more fully with the team and established a plan of action. Additionally, I met with the engineer to let him know I was the one pushing for change and that I saw the potential for him to add a lot of value if he could make a few adjustments.
I checked in with the engineer and his manager regularly. It took some time, but the engineer ultimately embraced his role as a subject matter expert. The quality of the work of his team has improved and I genuinely appreciated his willingness to change. I promoted him last year to an architect role and he is thriving."
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I worked on a project last year in which we were rearchitecting a number of services for a legacy system. The decision was made to move to AWS and we experienced a number of performance issues initially. As a senior engineer on the team, several of the junior engineers looked to me for guidance. I developed a strategy to research projects internally and at other companies that experienced similar issues. We divided the work up and our research ultimately led us to a series of fixed that helped get us where we needed to be."

I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require an additional commitment of hours from me. Never have I under delivered on a deadline."
Written by Karrie Day on July 22nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"Time management has been something that I have worked on improving since my time in University. I set goals for myself and attached a time deadline for those goals. Also, I am diligent with the use of my calendar and have a great scheduling app on my phone that I refer to as well."
Written by Karrie Day on July 22nd, 2023
3rd Answer Example
"It is important for me to manage my time on several levels. I review my team's production schedule and roadmap every week to ensure that we understand our priorities. Likewise, I review everyone's calendars and discuss availability to ensure we have proper coverage. If there are gaps, I make sure to allocate time on my calendar to find replacements or fill the gap myself.
On a daily basis, I make a plan first thing in the morning of how to spend my day. I schedule time for large initiatives around meetings and leave time for impromptu discussions or emergency requests. I use tools embedded within my calendar as well as task lists to ensure everything is completed on time. I feel confident a similar approach would work well here at Raytheon."

14. If you were given a choice, which work-related task would you leave for last? Why?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Often we will leave the tasks that we don't like for last, in the act of procrastination. Other times, we will mindfully address certain tasks last because they have lesser priority or value. Raytheon trusts that their employees know this key difference and includes questions like these to test your ability to prioritize your work effectively.
Written by Karrie Day on July 22nd, 2023
How to Answer
There are two main elements to answering this question successfully. First, it is important to authentically identify the types of tasks that you would leave for last if given a choice. A truthful response is a must as the trust of their employees is a key requirement at companies like Raytheon that require various levels of security clearance for top roles.
Next, you'll want to convince your interviewer that while you may have a choice in how to order your tasks, you know how to properly prioritize your work to ensure that important items are addressed promptly and that administrative or mundane tasks do not fall behind. Essentially, you want to prove that you can be trusted to take full advantage of the level of autonomy offered in your role and will not require micromanaging.
Written by Karrie Day on July 22nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"If given a choice, I would leave my documentation tasks for last. I say this because I like to spend my time with my customers so anything to do with documentation during business hours - I feel takes away from my client-facing tasks. I do understand the importance of it, though."

Teamwork
32. Tell me about a time when you experienced conflict in a team setting.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Team-based projects are common at Raytheon. One of the most important indicators of a candidate's ability to work well in a team setting is how they handle themselves in the face of conflict. The interviewer wants to know if you have the poise and soft skills necessary to navigate team-level conflicts with ease.
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
How to Answer
The STAR (situation, task, action, result) method works well for answering behavioral questions like these in an interview. Additionally, it is best to choose a time when you took an active role in resolving the conflict you describe.
Walk your interviewer through the necessary background information and then describe the specific steps you took to help resolve the conflict. Finally, describe any process changes or benefits that resulted from your actions.
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I run into conflict from time to time in my work as a quality control inspector. When I find an issue, I am essentially shining a light on a mistake that was made. Last month I uncovered a significant deviation from the specification that the customer had signed off on. I raised the issue with the engineering team and they were dismissive of it initially. I could have escalated to their director, but I prefer to avoid that when possible.
I let the issue go for a day and then revisited it with them the following day. I outlined the details and the potential risks of not changing the product before large-scale production was set to commence in an email and gave them time to discuss it. I then circled back around in person and we were able to agree as a group that changes were necessary.
Letting people know their work isn't perfect and rework is required can be difficult news to hear sometimes. I have learned that offering them time to think it over gives them a chance to accept the situation and determine a viable path forward."
Written by Karrie Day on July 23rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"A lot of the work I do as a software engineer occurs in a team setting and I have noticed that conflicts come up frequently during estimation and design meetings. Our discussions are theoretical in nature and they require us to make assumptions that we do not always agree upon as a team.
Last week we were in conflict over the approach we should take to design a specific feature. One approach would take more time, but it would allow us to clear some technical debt we had recently incurred. The second approach was faster and would allow us to take on more scope than we had planned initially.
There were two members of the team that were strongly opposed to one another and things were heated. I was able to see both sides and decided to step in to help facilitate the conversation in a more productive manner. I led a discussion around what would happen if we played each of the scenarios out and it ultimately became clear that we could save more time in the end if we addressed the technical debt. The team came to a consensus and we are now working on the solution we agreed to."

Depending on the specific role you may notice phrases like 'must be able to work well with others' and 'leaves ego at the door' within the job description.
Your interviewer wants to know if you are ready to collaborate and appreciate the value of working closely with others. One of the best ways to identify candidates with views on teamwork that align with Raytheon's is to ask about an optimal team environment.
Written by Karrie Day on July 20th, 2023
How to Answer
Describe several of the attributes you would expect to see in an optimal team environment. Be authentic and focus on the positive aspects you appreciate about working in a team over describing negative team experiences you've had in the past. Also, be sure to read the job description for the role you're interviewing for and mention any of the team culture terms used that resonate with your own take on an optimal team setting.
Written by Karrie Day on July 20th, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I thrive in team settings and I genuinely appreciate how a collaborative environment can lead to better solutions than one could generate on their own. In my opinion, an optimal team setting allows for a balanced approach to teamwork. There is time to work independently and then the team comes together to share and take everyone's individual contributions further.
Optimal team environments allow everyone to contribute freely and they respect a diverse set of ideas and perspectives. Great teams support one another, celebrate successes, and are accountable for failures."
Written by Karrie Day on July 20th, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"To me, an optimal team setting is one in which everyone does their part and is willing to help others as needed. Everyone is free to share ideas equally and has the chance to be a leader in their own way. While my team-based experience is limited given that this will be my first major role after college, I feel confident I will be able to collaborate with my teammates at a high level if selected for the position here at Raytheon."

Tough
35. At Raytheon we have some strong competitors. In your opinion, what makes us stand out from the others?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Questions like these generally serve two purposes. First, they identify candidates who have diligently researched Raytheon and their competitors. This type of information is an important component of several roles at Raytheon, and interviewers ask this question to ensure a candidate is properly educated on their competitors.
The second motivation for asking this question is to gain information about how a candidate feels about Raytheon in comparison to their competitors. It is possible that a candidate will be interviewing with several companies at the same time, and the interviewer can use this question to determine how likely a candidate is to select Raytheon as their next employer.
