How do you learn the company culture of a new client when taking on their project?

"When I was an independent consultant, I would work with clients anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. I developed a questionnaire that contained discovery questions surrounding how the c-suite viewed various relationships, how they reward their employees, how they approach disciplinary action, and more. I would spend time immersed in their environment and then create a brief report based on the data and my direct exposure."

The interviewer would like to know your process for onboarding and getting to know a new client. A large part of understanding your clients' needs is understanding their company culture and the culture they want to achieve. Discuss the ways you learn about an organization's workplace culture, its values, and how they build trusting relationships. "I begin with a checklist, the same one for each client, no matter their industry. This checklist gives me a baseline of what I am looking for within an organization. I ask questions of the employees, and leaders, related to values, relationships, corrective action, development opportunities, and more. Also, I must immerse myself in the culture, so if I will be working with a client for a few months, I will spend a few days inside their office, learning their operations first-hand."

If you could serve as a consultant to your younger self, what professional advice would you give yourself?

"I would tell myself to always play to my strong suit and follow my instincts. Early on, I worked with some very go-getter individuals who got me to second guess myself and undermined my confidence. They've since switched careers, and I have flourished in mine, especially with my career satisfaction. So I would consult with my younger self, tell him to trust his instincts, keep doing what feels right for the right reasons, and pursue it regardless of what others say. I would tell him to examine others' intentions the way I do now. I now listen to my instincts and trust my intentions of doing the right thing for the right reasons."

I always had good business sense, too. So that led to me landing on this career path, which I still find exceedingly rewarding."

"I come from a very simple and humble family in Romania but I wanted to create a new life with opportunities and personal growth. I understood from a very young age, that the world offered more possibilities than I could access in my native country. And my ambition and hunger for knowledge became my driving force."

Do you consider yourself a persuasive person?

"I can be persuasive when helping my clients understand the logic behind our group's recommendations. It's important to lay out the intentions of any change and then express the importance of those changes. To persuade someone to your point of view in our line of work, you have to get them to trust you know what you are doing and that your course of action will help them better than they could help themselves."

It is not a negative thing to be persuasive. Being persuasive can often be related to being manipulative or deceitful, but this is not the case. This question focuses on your communication skills and how well you can influence others' outlooks for their benefit. You are advocating for their success while bringing them on board with what is best for them, all while encouraging them outside their comfort zone.

Part of being an excellent consultant is being motivated to help your clients achieve their goals and overcome their biases or attachments while acting in their best interest. "Yes, definitely.Being in the product owner role a lot of time you get recommendations from the sales team, professional services team to make adjustments or enhancements in the product because they look for satisfying a single user/client who they are dealing with. I always take a step back and look at where it's coming from and if it is really needed. A lot of time I have explained to them why certain things that they ask for are not required, and that the product as is today satisfies the asks."

What is the most challenging client issue you have faced this year? How did you overcome the situation?

"I recently had a client who wanted to control every aspect of my work rather than being open to the process. He was very hands-on, which is great; however, he was not receptive to change. I held a one-on-one meeting with him to discuss the situation head-on. Professionally, I let him know that if he disallowed my process, he would not get the return he was seeking. I then offered him another solution; I had him join a separate Workforce group where he could monitor my progress in real-time. I would offer notes and give them updates with calendar info. I anticipated his questions and gave him the feeling of control he seemed to need. From that point, he gave me the room to work that I needed."

Others may have antiquated processes and no internal employee knowledgeable enough to change that. Whatever the reason, I am prepared to show my new clients how wise it was to bring on PwC to assist."

So one of the solutions became ‘let us take this off your hands’ and we will keep those positions open to the current employees so there will be minimal job loss. And we will adopt this cc department with our own brand and take the risk of keeping it alive. These 2 consultants turned a floundering local cc business into the powerhouse it is today. Consultants analyze the situation, find the root issues, and provide their expertise to improve the business. They have the power to change not only a business but a community and more."

What are the components of a successful and effective presentation?

"I have given many presentations in my consulting career and have found that when I start with a story, state facts, provide visuals, and end with how those facts pertain to the story and the client's pain point, I can capture and keep the attention of my audience. Everyone loves a great story, especially one that is relatable to their personal or professional situation. You have to capture their attention, hold it, and answer every question before they can ask it. Communicate every step of the way."

PwC asks, "Do you communicate with confidence?" This question is the heart of this interview question. Regardless of your experience giving presentations, you likely understand the difference between a terrible performance and one that captures your audience's attention all the way through. Some factors which professionals consider necessary to make a successful presentation are understanding your audience, using relatable terms and jargon, introducing multi-media or other visuals, being presentable in appearance, and utilizing the art of storytelling, among many others. I combed through their websites and was happy to find that the messaging from PwC was the most consistent. Your firm appears to have the most vision and direction and a more robust client list over a wider range of client industries."

There are many management consulting firms out there, from solo-run consultancies to the biggest agencies in the business. Before your interview, research the size of PwC, who their clients are, and who their direct competitors are. Who do they compete against for business? Spend less time finding who all their competitors are and more time on what they advertise sets them apart. "One of my coworkers and I were doing a joint presentation for a prospective client. It was a high-stakes presentation, and he and I have very different styles of performance and preparation. Luckily, we both identified this as a potential obstacle from the get-go and came to the table with our ideas on how the outline would go and who would say what. Because we were both able to identify that we could clash and took a proactive approach to delegate tasks, we worked very well together and hit our performance out of the park."

How well you get along with and adapt to other personalities speaks to your skills and emotional maturity as a professional. Being able to empathize with and actively listen to someone even when you disagree with them speaks to your communication skills and ability to navigate rough terrain. "I exercise logic every day, and my reasoning skills are strong. I have formal processes in place when making a client plan, and I also use past cases to come to logical conclusions in tougher situations. Logical thinking is all about putting the pieces together. I do a lot of IQ and mental exercises in my spare time. The activities seem fun, but they also improve my logic and reasoning skills. I have trained myself to think in conditional statements so that my brain automatically searches for the logic in any situation."

The interviewer would like to know that you can exercise logic and good judgment. Define your approach, philosophy, and formal process to logical thinking and data analysis.

"I look at everything analytically. I start by taking everything apart in my mind, then reorganizing all the pieces. I determine what is integral and what is extraneous and prioritize. I then take it a step further and get the input of other key players to identify what they value most about the subject at hand. With that information, I remove everything else and make fact-based decisions based on those key components."

"Exercising logic involves thinking critically, making reasonable decisions, and solving problems based on facts and sound reasoning."

How do you manage the lifecycle of your projects to ensure on-time deliverables and deadlines?

"When I take on a new project, I break it into four phases. Initiate, Plan, Execute, Close. These four phases are further broken down into categories, all with a linear timeline attached. Asana and Slack are my 'go-to' tools to ensure the entire team is aware of their tasks and deadlines. I book regular check-ins with my team and schedule client touchpoints. My high-level view of the project, through all stages, ensures there are rarely any surprises and that everyone is on the same page."

An efficient process can be the difference between a job well done and a job that falls apart. While considering you as a candidate, the interviewer is looking for assurances you have a process in place when taking on a new project. How comfortable are you working in a culturally diverse environment?

"When you go anywhere in the world, into someone's home, country, culture, workplace, you are stepping outside of your comfort zone into an environment different from what you are used to. However, I have made such a habit of meeting and engaging with people from a background different from my own that it is my comfort zone. Whether it is a new place of work or a client's work culture, I get excited about working with people from different backgrounds than mine. It's what keeps things fresh for me professionally."

"To expand my professional knowledge, I have enrolled in an online course through NYU on microeconomics. I needed to take the initiative to learn more on this topic and keep my knowledge current. To grow personally, I have read a couple of books on leadership. I love to read and learn from other professionals and behavioral experts."

Professional growth is vital and directly associated with the success you'll build in your career. The interviewer would like to know that you understand the importance of expanding your knowledge while taking the lead in your professional development. Perhaps you have taken coursework, attended a workshop, read books, or listen to podcasts. Share with the interviewer the ways that you invest in your career knowledge.

"I appreciate that you asked about professional development. It's a topic that is important to me. I have committed to reading one new book per month on a topic related to organizational development, leadership, and strategy. I listen to The Growth podcast every day on my commute to hear business turnaround stories. I find them inspiring."

In consulting, much of your growth will come from feedback on client projects. How do you accept and implement feedback?

"I ask for feedback every month from one of my toughest-to-please managers. Her feedback is accurate, and I trust it. Once she tells me what I could try doing differently, I will take the time to research and plan how I can implement the change. This practice has helped me grow in my career significantly."

The ability to accept feedback graciously is a highly valued skill, especially in the consulting space, where you are continually putting yourself in vulnerable situations, and your recommendations and findings may not always be welcomed or understood. The interviewer wants to know that you accept feedback well; they also want to know that you see the value of implementing immediate change while effectively representing their brand and retaining their clients' trust and loyalty.

"At the end of every project, I give my clients and their team a survey focused specifically on my service, knowledge base, and if they felt they received the value from me that they expected. The feedback is blind, but I take every bit of it as though it came from the company's CEO. I analyze the comments for common denominators as well. If the feedback is consistent, I will create a learning plan based on that common feedback. The way I look at it, you don't want to be blind to what is working and what isn't."

"I will run a retrospective session at the end of every release which helps with getting feedback on what we did well and what we need to improve. This session can be run as a team where with the covid situation have a zoom call or google meet discuss it face to face or depending on who the client is and what they are comfortable with it can also be done through an anonymous feedback session. Review them and work on what needs to be improved and the good points will be used to encourage the team to do better."

How do you react when your team misses a deadline?

"My team is highly efficient, and we rarely miss a deadline. When we do, it's surprising. Last year, we had a very challenging client who made significant changes throughout the project. These changes caused us to miss our deadline. I took action after that to ensure a better client onboarding process. This new process made sure we dug deeper with each client at the start, which has resulted in fewer mid-project changes."

The question aims to understand how you react to disappointment and professional setbacks. Your answer could offer them insights into your emotional maturity, whether you let your disappointment get the best of you or learn from and apply the lessons of your failures towards shoring up your future success. "When my team misses a deadline, it is disappointing. On the odd occasion that this happens, I first ask my team for feedback. I want to know what I could have done better as a leader to hit our goal. Then, I ask them to look internally and tell me what they honestly feel they could have done differently. I prefer a collaborative approach to these types of conversations."

"With Agile, there are no surprises. Since the progress is monitored always, I as a product owner, know the status of the release. If due to technical reasons or when the team member is not available which will make us miss the deadline. I would inform the management about the status And with daily standup, a lot of these are easily handled. Let's assume it comes as a last min surprise, I would deprioritize and put items in the backlog plan for the release or will ask additional weeks to have those items complete and release it few weeks late"

"I would quickly ascertain why we missed the mark and rectify the situation. Calm, clear communication is essential at this point to the team so we do our best in fixing the situation and make sure that it doesn't happen again in the future. I recall when this happened with a small company that I was running. A team member missed an important deadline while out sick which really hurt the others in the group. We worked to repair the camaraderie and made sure that everyone knew how to handle this better in the future. I had to ask some to be calm in how they communicate and asked the others that didn't let the others know he was out sick to keep us all informed, even if it takes just a moment. In the end, the team was stronger for it and there was no lasting damage."

What steps do you take when researching a new market or industry?

"When I take on a project within a new market or industry, I will find someone in my network that I know, trust, and admire, and ask for 30 minutes of their time. Essentially, I want to interview a subject matter expert. I will uncover their best resources and research thoroughly from there. Also, one of my trade secrets is I have a subscription to Viewpoint. I learned some time ago that PwC's platform has a lot to offer."

Your interviewers expect you to advertise your research skills while you share your approach to a new industry. They are also testing how familiar you are with their unique offerings. PwC has a platform called Viewpoint. "Viewpoint is a digital platform with timely, relevant accounting and business insights, personalized for you. Viewpoint's intuitive search functionality and personalization makes researching insights around accounting standards, financial reporting, and regulatory developments quick and easy." Perform adequate research, and be prepared to speak to your experience and familiarity with what you may face on the job with them.

"I have strong research skills and a three-step process when learning about a new market or industry. First, I find what I can from reputable online resources. Next, I create a list of questions that need answering. Third, I source and subject matter expert from my network whom I can ask these questions. It's important to use a variety of reputable sources when conducting research and collecting findings."

"When given an opportunity to work on a new market/industry I will try to find if there is anyone in my network who has experience in it or ask people I know who I can reach out to get more information. The Internet has lots of documents and lots of information how well that can be consumed needs some direction. So I would first reach to people who I know ask their time to have a chat about it. And then will find a course in udemy which I will enroll to learn more about it and once I have the right direction I would start researching the internet for an answer."

What cutting-edge management tools have you used in your career?

"I have experience with application management and implementation tools. I have leveraged software and other tech offerings from companies such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Cisco in the past. These tools are essential for accelerating projects and elevating the result. There isn't much information online about PwC's proprietary software, however. What can you tell me about that?"

Before your interview, familiarize yourself with the digital management tools PwC uses or has recently developed. Comb through their job postings (including those positions you are not applying for) first to see if they mention any specific programs.Once you have some idea of their expectations or what the programs they designed are most similar to, share the programs and tools that you have used in your previous roles that are most translatable to what they utilize. If you are new to the industry or your career, discuss your ability and willingness to learn their systems quickly.

As a consultancy company, they are in the business to help businesses work as efficiently as possible. "In your job posting, you mentioned that PwC uses many Salesforce and Oracle products. I would love to learn more about your internal systems as well. I have about one year of experience with Salesforce; however, I am eager to learn the offerings in greater depth."

"I am familiar with using Rally, which is what we currently use in our project to manage the releases. It has lots of features that have made planning and release more efficient. We also use Miro for developing vision boards and anything that we need to collaborate on. Jira is another tool we are planning to use, which I know on a high level but never used in a release. Aha was another tool that we tried, but it felt like we were duplicating a lot of work between Rally and Aha so we deprecated Aha."

"I've worked across different industries and have found that each one has its own special set. My last project with Corning focused on adapting ESG processes throughout the organization using carbon-related SaaS, and their ERP versions of SAP- there were about 30 different types! Related to that is an area that I would be interested in exploring with PwC: climate modeling. The tools and possibilities are growing rapidly and this will be an area of opportunity for PwC to explore."

"I believe the most critical KPI to consider is the repeat business rate. This metric is directly associated with client satisfaction and will tell a consultant or agency a lot about their business and the likeability factor. Build trust, take action, then deliver on those promises."

These are just some of the skills I have honed over my years in consulting, and I look forward to making them work for PwC and your clients."

How does a career in management consulting fulfill and satisfy you?

"The most satisfying part of my career as a management consultant is the opportunity to change the course of someone's business. To be a problem solver for complex issues is incredibly satisfying. I love a challenge, and each client presents new ones. It's like solving a cool puzzle every day."

"My current manager motivates me by reminding me that she has full faith in my work. Those words boost my confidence, especially on more challenging client projects. I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a team leaderboard, and I like that concept because it creates healthy competition."

Any time you're asked this question, the interviewer hopes you'll share your big-picture goals and how they can help you achieve those goals. Research the job and the company and adjust your plan to make this attainable for them. Then, share the lofty goals you'd like to achieve in five years, broken into yearly goals. Break the next two years into monthly goals, and set parameters for exactly how they can help you achieve these goals. Convey how they can earn your loyalty and assure them you intend to stay with them long-term.

How you answer this question could indicate how seriously you consider their company to be the right fit for you. So do your research and identify the value propositions that speak to your goals. The industries in which I am most interested in working are finance, real estate, and investment; however, I have found that there are excellent clients in every industry."

In your career as a management consultant, you'll work with a vast range of clients across many industries. Discuss the type of client with which you most prefer collaborating with. You could mention the size of their company, the workplace culture they have crafted, their strategic process, or their vision. I will share with them some tools and resources that I find helpful and remind them that my door is open whenever they have a question. I am very open to formal leadership opportunities should those arise with PwC."

"My grandfather was a man of great integrity. He was a fighter who told everyone he ever met to fight for what they believe in. He said everyone should have a fair chance to succeed but that it is an unfair world. He said if you don't stand up for what you believe in, you don't have a leg to stand on. He was one of those people others would come to for advice, and he was always generous with his time. Big shoes to fill, but I am trying."

"I would say the greatest challenge I'll face in this role is learning the industry ins and outs well enough to be perceived as an expert when making project pitches to clients. I've already begun subscribing to and reading the leading industry publications to give myself a fuller understanding. I will also seek out a mentor who is an expert in the industry, as it's important to learn from those who have already walked the path."

Starting a new role is always a challenge. The interviewer wants to know how thoroughly you've prepared for this interview by gauging your familiarity with the company and the position you are applying for while integrating into their unique culture and work environment. Even though it may seem like a dream job, you need to go in with realistic expectations of the role. Keep your answer simple.

"The greatest challenge will be getting to know your clients and their preferences. Every client has quirks that need to be recognized during projects. I plan to read as many project notes as possible before diving into face-to-face meetings. I intend to come across to your clients as well-prepared and earnest."

"The greatest challenges I expect to face in this job include staying updated with industry changes, managing client expectations, and handling complex projects. To overcome these challenges, I'll commit to continuous learning."

How do you prioritize multiple projects when they all seem equally important?

"I aim to be as effective as possible, and based on my experience as a professional, I know what matters and what has the potential of being a distraction. In my current role, I work on three to five projects at once. I am the lead on some, the delegator on others, and the reviewer on others. By splitting up the roles and work responsibilities, my team and I can be the most efficient with my time."

As PwC says, "Know what matters -- and start with the basics." Your interviewer is curious about how you prioritize your work, what you base your decision-making on, and how you manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Tell the interviewer how you establish priorities and what you base them on. "All our staff are recruited, developed, and managed against the PwC Professional's attributes for leadership. The combination of these attributes helps our people bring their best selves to work and inspire their colleagues and clients to do the same. It also means that PwC people will be strongly and uniquely positioned to meet the challenges of the future wherever their careers might lead them."

There are many approaches you can take. Here are some suggestions:1) Make a list. By thinking through and writing down each item that needs completion, you can see it on paper.2) Mark what is urgent or essential. Take into account deadlines and meetings.3) Order each task based on effort and estimated value. 4) Consider due dates and how long it will take to do each item.

"I love to keep running lists of everything I need to do, big or small. If I feel a project may run ahead of schedule, I'll even add extras to knock it out of the park, but only if it doesn't interfere with other priorities. There's no need to overcomplicate things either. Keep it basic. I've started utilizing free project management software for lists and task categorization, and then I mark them by the level of urgency. I take care of the most time-sensitive issues first and then move along to the equally important but perhaps less time-sensitive items. I also estimate how long each task will take, so if I have a few minutes between projects, I can tackle the quick to-dos."

"When dealing with several equally important projects, I implement a structured method to prioritize them effectively. I begin by assessing the specific objectives, deadlines, and available resources for each project. I then determine the criticality and urgency of each project, taking into account their immediate and long-term impact on the organization."

What makes you a great problem solver?
