HireVue is an online interviewing assessment vendor with algorithms to interview and study a candidate's performance. Their service is designed to streamline the interview process by reducing paperwork, scheduling, and other logistical concerns for the employer. Their "models focus on skills, behaviors, and competencies specific to the job."

By asking a more informal question to get you out of interview mode, they'll more likely result in a sincere response with which they'll be able to contrast your other more reserved and performative answers. HireVue's website offers the following advice to candidates: "Be yourself. Our solutions are flexible, mobile-friendly, and easy to use, so you can relax and put your best foot forward." This is good advice. Additionally, you'll want to feel confident in your interview performance and ensure you are putting your best foot forward by taking the time to fully prepare for your interview.

"I have been in the field of climate change and sustainability for over 7 years now. So, I have a very interdisciplinary background, I started in this field by pursuing environmental geology with a minor in computer science. So I have always shown an early interest in the nexus of technology and the environment. That is why PwC's new equation resonated with me. Later I completed my master's in resources, environment, and sustainability working a lot around nature-based solutions. During this time I collaborated with various stakeholders. PwC advises their candidates to prepare as much as possible for their assessment. This should entail not only researching PwC, but yourself, your professional history, unique experiences, and all the responsibilities you've taken ownership of in the past. As they state on their website, "Even highly capable candidates can perform poorly at this early stage, sometimes failing to do themselves justice at all. Therefore, preparation for this element of the assessment process is as vital as stages much later on in the process."

HireVue's On Demand interviews allow you to take the interview on your own time. It will record and analyze your performance and pass that information and the recorded interview onto the hiring authority of PwC. "You will use a computer, tablet, or mobile device to answer questions created by the company for the position you are applying for. Your answers are recorded for a representative at their company to evaluate. Because HireVue is not directly involved in the hiring process, the company you applied to will follow up with you about their hiring decision or any next steps after you complete your interview."

Don't let this question catch you off guard. PwC advertises that they will look at your skills and what you have to offer as a whole, not just the position you are applying for. "When assessing your application, we'll also be considering if your skills are suitable for other parts of our business and, where appropriate, discuss other opportunities." How you respond could reveal the extent to which you prepared for your interview with them and whether you discovered this on their website. Also, how you respond could inform them of how invested you are in an opportunity with PwC or if this job just seemed suitable for your skills right now. So be sure to thoroughly research all aspects of the company and come prepared to answer any question they throw your way.

PwC states on their website that they "use various methods to assess candidates during our recruitment process. Each candidate who applies for a role will offer a unique set of skills, experience, and characteristics. All candidates for the role can then be compared in terms of the level of skill they demonstrate in the assessment."

HireVue uses proprietary machine learning algorithms to record your video interview and analyze varying data points to determine your experience level and predict your future job performance. That information, with the recorded interviews, is passed on to the company's hiring authority for further study. It will analyze your level of honesty based on the consistency of your answers, vocal inflections, eye movements, facial expressions, posture, and clues of your confidence in your statements and if you truly believe in what you are saying. There are a few different approaches they use for their questions as well. For example, they state, "Common types of questions you'll see in a video-based assessment are situational judgment questions. You'll be asked what actions to take when confronted with a hypothetical situation."

How do you build trust with those you work with?

"I am a firm believer that trust is earned. HireVue advertises that "Your interview video will be analyzed by an assessment model (also called an algorithm). HireVue Assessments take the place of the same kinds of things that a recruiter or hiring manager would be looking for in a candidate for the job you're applying for."PwC offers the following advice for setting up for your assessment interview, "Allow some time before the interview start time to enter the virtual interview room and check that the webcam, sound and lighting is suitable for your interview before it begins. Close any unnecessary browsers or applications that may notify you and distract you on your device during your interview. Have a glass of water ready next to you if you need it during the interview. Ensure you are in a quiet room or area, well lit and free of distractions."

"In all honesty, out of all the companies I researched when I was trying to determine what felt like the best working environment and company culture for me, PwC stood apart from the rest. I want to keep advancing in my career, and I am interested in repeating success for me and the company I work for. This question aims to reveal how much thought you've put into pursuing an opportunity with them, specifically, as opposed to finding a position anywhere that fits your skills. PwC advertises that they are looking to recruit those who not only have the skills required to perform the job but share their values and would be compatible with their culture: "Why PwC? Although we come from different backgrounds and cultures across the firm, our values are what we have in common. They capture our shared aspirations and expectations and guide how we make decisions and treat others. We care for our people and are committed to inclusion, understanding, and respect for all."

HireVue's assessments aim to identify top performers most suited to the company's goals and culture, in this case, PwC. That information is then passed on to the company's hiring authority. Once the hiring authority receives the materials, they can view the interviews side by side for further comparison and evaluation.

When describing the assessment interview process, PwC acknowledges, "For many candidates, the situation can feel rather contrived and impersonal due to the lack of eye contact and ability to build rapport." This is a valid point not just from the candidate's perspective but the hiring authority, who may later review the recorded interview and the algorithm that assesses the candidate's behavior, including eye contact and gaze avoidance. So spend a little time practicing in front of your computer's camera, trying not to look at yourself on the screen, but rather maintaining eye contact with the camera lens as if you're speaking face-to-face with a person, and keep at it until you are relaxed and seem natural.

Where do you want to take your career in the next three years?

"Well, I imagine I would be entering as an associate. So over the next year, I would prioritize my goals to learn everything I could, develop personalized systems for myself, and strive to overachieve at every turn. I would increasingly do everything I could to be mentored by my superiors, actively listen, and take charge of my development. In year two, I would impart what I'd learned over the first year to anyone onboarding, all while seeking to further my leadership skills. We want to give our people personalization within their career. The future state will have increased emphasis on growth and development, rewards and benefits customized, well-being further stitched into our daily experiences, and the flexibility to support our people as their lives and needs shift over time."

HireVue offers practice questions on their website to prepare you for their process. While the practice questions may not apply directly to PwC, it can still serve as a useful exercise. "While virtual interviewing isn't difficult, a little practice can help you prepare. Most on-demand interviews ask you to give your answer in just a few minutes. It's helpful to think about how you will illustrate your skills clearly in that timeframe, and to practice them out loud."Once a question is posed, you'll be allowed roughly 20-30 seconds per question to formulate your response. You're allowed up to three minutes to record each answer. There are no retakes. You get only one opportunity to record your answers. Some questions may take longer to answer than others, but only take as much time as you need. Don't try to run out the clock or allow it to cut you off. Be as succinct as possible.

Just like an in-person or phone interview, this is your chance to shine and share what you offer. Be authentic and remember, relax! Have fun and let your skills and personality do the talking! Most importantly, be authentic. Just speak and focus in the way that makes you comfortable. Get excited and share your energy with the camera!"

"One of my favorite quotes is by Albert Einstein, who said, 'The more I learn, the more I realize what little I understand.' That's a brilliant quote. It is that pursuit of endless questioning, continual learning, and my drive for endless self-betterment in everything I do that motivates me. This would suggest that you would have no real loyalty to the company and are only in it for the money. HireVue offers candidates the following advice: "Virtual interviewing is similar to the video calls many of us have been using. Since you can interview from anywhere, make sure it's somewhere you're comfortable. Pick a spot free from distractions and noise. Ensure you've got the strongest Wi-Fi signal possible. And don't forget to check your lighting. Make sure it's in front of you. Lighting from behind makes it hard to see you. Just be natural! Get comfortable and be confident in yourself." Additionally, PwC advises that when preparing for your on-demand interview, "be aware of your lighting, positioning, and background. Pay close attention to how you look during setup. Ideally, place a source of light in front of you, and avoid sources of bright light (i.e. windows) directly behind you, as this can make it hard to see your face."

"Eventually, I would love to end up in a director position. I would also be willing to work at any global location."

It may feel a little different to put on your Sunday best for your kitchen table, but hey, at least you won't have to get it pressed again after this, right?"

Tell me about a time you had to communicate a complex concept in simple terms.

"Since my grandfather retired, my parents inherited his small grocery store. They run it now and are both self-employed. They were recently shopping for health insurance plans through a broker. They had trouble navigating the costs and were initially looking for the plan with the lowest deductible, yet those plans had the highest monthly out of pocket. I love crunching numbers, so I sat down with them and determined their lowest annual cost based on their health conditions, how infrequently they go to the doctor, being both reasonably healthy people, and broke down the differences between paying a deductible, a copay, coinsurance, and a monthly premium. I then created a spreadsheet customized to them that broke down what their lowest monthly cost would be. By doing this, I saved them three thousand dollars a year."

This question tests your communication skills and how well you would represent PwC to their clients. Although there are supposedly no sneak previews for the questions you can expect and prepare for, the questions in this set are designed around PwC's purpose statements, values, and cultural identity. Consider this information while strategizing how to compete with the other candidates for a second interview. "All candidates applying to a position will receive the same set of questions, selected by the hiring company. Additionally, HireVue takes measures to prevent candidates from seeing these interview questions before they are taking an interview. These measures ensure that each candidate has the same amount of time to review the questions, and prepare their responses, giving all candidates the same interview experience and an equal shot at putting their best foot forward."

The assessment vendor will screen you for how well you communicate. So keep an ear out for any stutters, awkward pauses, or your use of any tics or speech crutch words such as "like," "um," and "you know," among others. Be mindful of your choice of words and what they might suggest beyond your intended meaning. Doing so will aid in presenting yourself as a clearer communicator and more of a professional.

Why are you a good fit for PwC?

"I am a good fit for PwC because I am passionate about solving problems. I love puzzles, and I love a good challenge. I am not one of those people who stops at a roadblock or a brick wall. I am always convinced there is a way around that roadblock, or over it, or a secret door. I am also very results driven and never give up. This question asks why they should want to hire you. Similarly phrased questions such as these are designed to test your attention to detail and how quickly you can think on your feet. So, answer this question by researching their company and what their ideal candidate looks like, and determine how you fit the build.

Here are several statements from PwC that suggest the teams and culture they aim to continue to build upon. "Who we are: A passionate community of solvers coming together in unexpected ways. Our purpose: to build trust in society and solve important problems, is at the core of everything we do. Here, you'll learn with purpose, lead with heart and put your skills to work to make a meaningful difference in the world. Be a part of The New Equation. Bring your experiences. Make your mark."

HireVue advertises that they aim to provide "consistency to the interview process. Each candidate is asked the same questions and is reviewed using the same criteria. This, in turn, allows HireVue's customers to quickly hire better quality, more diverse applicants to fill their roles." So, when you are hoping to outperform the other candidates in the field, consider the advice PwC provides their candidates, "Smiling can help you to relax and, as a result, you will come across as more confident, friendly and assertive."

What does integrity mean to you?

"To me, integrity means more than honesty. It means credibility. Think about the different uses of that word and how it applies to other things. For example, if you look at a building and say it has structural integrity, you can trust it to keep standing and hold up under even the most strenuous circumstances. I look at my integrity the same way. If I give you my word on something or pride myself on a trait that is integral to my character, then that defines me, and you can trust it. So for me, integrity means standing tall, steady, unwavering, and staying true to my word. If it is integral to my character, it is one of the building blocks of my character and what defines me. Honesty, honor, commitment, being true to my word, and doing the right thing."

This question assesses your integrity by evaluating how honestly you present your answer and how your concept of integrity aligns with theirs. When answering their questions, especially concerning your integrity or truthfulness, answer as sincerely as you can. Some non-verbal cues the assessment vendor will use to evaluate your honesty are stroking your chin and covering your mouth or your eyes, gaze avoidance, the direction of your eyes, excessive fidgeting such as restless foot and leg movements, frequent body posture changes, and grooming behaviors such as playing with hair or pressing your fingers to lips. Keep your body language open, your tone steady, even, and consistent with your statements.

"Integrity, to me, is a commitment to honesty, ethics, and moral principles. It means consistently doing what is right, even when no one is watching. Integrity involves transparency and accountability. It's the foundation of trust, both in personal relationships and in professional interactions."

What are your strengths?

"Although I am fresh out of college, I have some business leadership experience under my belt and am ready to bring my skills and unique perspectives to the table with humility and a passion to learn and develop my skills. I have a fresh perspective and look at everything through a microscope and a prism, under every light and from every angle. I am always reading and learning and staying ahead of the curve with new insights, trends, and developments in the industry. When defining your strengths, consider those that showcase you as a desirable asset. PwC describes their professionals as those who have had their careers "enriched by aligning their individual strengths and interests, both personally and professionally."

How you answer each question could reveal your experience level as a professional. To set yourself apart from the other candidates, communicate that your standard is going above and beyond. Going above and beyond should come across as second nature to you. The confidence you exude behind your answers is just as important as the answer itself. Keep it natural, speaking in a friendly manner while maintaining eye contact with the camera. Be mindful of your posture and smile with both your mouth and your eyes.

Maintain eye contact with the camera as much as you can. You want your demeanor to come across as second nature. Looking at yourself on the screen to evaluate your performance could backfire and could be interpreted as looking down, which is a sign of lacking confidence. Practice beforehand until you are comfortable with this style of interview and come across as if you are speaking to a real person or audience.

Tell me about the last time you exhibited business acumen.

"When I worked for my grandfather's market, I identified some great opportunities to reduce our taxes. We partnered with our local parish to donate bread, produce, and other goods to their food bank. This way, instead of just taking a loss for spoilt or unused goods, we were donating them and putting them towards a good cause, building our reputation in the community, and taking advantage of a great tax write-off. Free advertising and fewer taxes. That's a win."

Even though there may be several ways one could interpret this question, what matters is how closely your answer aligns with how PwC interprets it. One of the PwC Professional attributes is "Business Acumen." When researching their website, you'll be able to find language that, in one way or another, effectively answers many of the questions posed throughout your interview set. Take note of their language and value statements. Integrate their language into your answers naturally, when possible. This will inform them that you've identified them as an ideal match for what you are looking for and already embrace their culture and values. When trying to dress for the role, PwC advises that you "dress in appropriate business wear. Research PwC and the position you are applying for."

According to HireVue, "Video-based assessments evaluate both what you know about performing the job ("hard skills" or competencies) and what recruiters call "soft" competencies, like communication skills, conscientiousness, problem-solving skills, team orientation, and initiative.
