When were you able to resolve a problem within work?

"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees received a reward for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was a success, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to be working very well."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are fundamental skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace.

"We have a problem with being short on labor hands quite often, due to the high employee turnover in our industry. I solved this issue by engaging a placement agency that specializes in temporary labor staffing. Whenever we are short on labor hands, they have a roster of individuals we can hire last minute and for the short term. Surprisingly, before I started with this company, they had never utilized this resource. Everyone is quite pleased with how this has worked out so far."

Give me an example of a time when you had to make a decision without all the information you needed.

"This happens rather frequently in home remodeling. Each time we came to an uncertain circumstance, I would consult with the project manager and each contractor involved in that arena. If the homeowner needed to be contacted, I would contact them. Rarely we would make a decision without knowing exactly which way forward we were supposed to go."

Everyone has difficult decisions they have made in their career where little information was present. Focus on a choice you made in your job where you wanted more time to gather information, but instead, had to make a fast decision. Remember to pick an example that results in a positive outcome.

"Depending on the outcome, I would almost never make a decision without knowing if this was the correct way of doing things. Also, I would try to get a feel for the project manager and the homeowner. Whether or not the homeowner has a history of picking out every single detail in their home vs a homeowner that never wants to make a decision."

How do you handle conflict in the workplace?

"My coworker and I had a misunderstanding about the schedule. We both got frustrated, so I took a step back and asked if we could talk about it when we were both calm; so the tension didn't escalate. The next day I pulled him aside and asked if we could talk. We both shared our sides of the story and realized it was just a miscommunication."

The tension between coworkers can be draining, mainly if you work in a high-stress work environment. When asked a question about dealing with conflict or overcoming a challenge, think of an example first. Having a concrete situation to draw from will help you to think through the steps you take to deal with conflict.

"Conflict in the workplace is sometimes unavoidable when you have so many personalities working together. When faced with conflict, I will remind myself to keep a level head, hear all sides of the story whenever possible, and remove myself from any situation that becomes heated."

Before we hire any new candidates, we ask that you demonstrate your construction skills on the job with us. Are you comfortable coming in and working with us for a day?

"Yes, absolutely. I had to frame a wall at my last job before they hired me. So I am definitely able to stop by and perform any tasks you want to see from me."

Companies will want to know two things about you beforing hiring. One, can you really do the job you are claiming to do? Second, how will your personality fit in with the rest of the crew? "Yes, if you can give me a day and time, then I can coordinate this with my current job. Typically my crew has Fridays off. If that day works for your team, that would be best for me."

How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity. Traits could include buzzwords such as extroverted, energetic, and confident.

"Here are some other words you can use to describe your personality without using overused keywords: - Adaptable - Balanced - Capable - Disciplined - Eloquent - Flexible"

What feedback did you receive at your last job?

"My manager told me that I was spending too much time on the details of a project. I realized that I could be such a perfectionist that I lose track of time and hyper-focus on things that aren't that important. I'm learning to prioritize the steps I need to take and the tasks that need completion when working on a bigger project."

Every manager has a different approach to giving feedback. Some prefer to save it for the performance review while others dish it out on the regular. Your response to feedback is much more important than the input itself. Even if it was negative, if you can take it as constructive criticism, you can improve yourself and your skills.

"Every performance review, in my previous position, was very positive. I like to achieve greatness in everything that I do, and my manager appreciated that."

When have you taken an existing process and used your own creativity to make it better?

"At my last construction company, staying organized was a huge problem for us. We had bins cluttered with random tools and bits. One day after work, I rearranged all the bins and toolboxes on the van to be better organized. I labeled them appropriately. It saved us a huge amount of time going forward."

Doing things as efficient as possible is a requirement in home building. Thinking of new ways to perform tasks more efficiently is a great skill to have. If you have perfected any carpentry skill in the past, proudly share it with the interviewer!

"I recently graduated from vocational training, but am always open and on the lookout for doing things more efficiently. I have a great work ethic and don't mind doing extra work, but my grandpa always said, 'work smarter not harder'."

What skill do you believe you need to improve upon?

"As I said earlier, my one task I dislike doing is drywall mudding, but I am working on becoming better at it. I don't shun away from the task, so each time I have to do it, I notice slight improvements."

Interviewer is looking for an honest skill you are trying to improve upon. Saying you are good at everything won't cut it. Interviewer will believe you are lying and/or arrogant.

"Yes, trimming crown molding is still something I have yet to perfect. I have been researching new techniques online and am trying to improve upon my angles. They are nearly seamless but not quite perfect yet."

What task in construction do you dislike doing the most?

"Yes, during my time remodeling homes, we often had to do plumbing in crawl spaces. I love plumbing, but when it came time to crawl under a house, it wasn't fun for me! I got the job done though but I made sure to shine flashlight throughout the crawl space to make sure there weren't any critters under there."

If you say there isn't a single thing in construction you dislike doing, you are flat out lying. Have you ever had to carry trash bags full of broken tile through two flights of stairs and into the backyard where the dumpster is? Maybe you haven't, but I am sure there has been a situation where you have done some grueling work before. Easiest answer to the interviewer is to describe a situation like that where you had to complete a task even though it was painful to do. But becareful not to brag about how tough it actually was.

"I would say mudding wall joints. It requires an artistic ability that I seem to be lacking in. I have gotten better at it over the years but I still can't mud a corner very well yet."

On a scale from 1 to 10, how honest are you?

"I would love to give myself a 10/10 for honesty but truthfully - nobody is 100% honest all of the time. I will give myself a nine because I always do my best to be as honest as possible."

Being an honest person in the trades is a key requirement. You'll be around valuable tools and materials. The home builders and future homeowners will be counting on your trustworthiness when completing their house. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you demonstrated a high level of trust and honesty.

"Very honest. I would never steal or lie to anyone. I value my reputation as a trust worthy person way more than I would ever value breaking that special bond."

"At my last job, we hired a new guy who started a few weeks prior. I was working on the baseboard using a mitre saw to cut the angles. He showed me a technique using a coping saw. It took more time, but the joints were nearly perfect. It was hard at first to listen to a new guy give me instructions, but that's just part of the trade."

"I would say every other week, in home remodeling, someone points out a technique or better way of doing something. At first, criticism used to bother me, but I have learned to listen to the guys who have been in the industry longer than me. Nine times out of ten, I walk away agreeing with what they said."

"Leaving Company X was due to a merger, and my role was eliminated. Company Y was a seasonal role, and I am now looking for a new position because my contract with Company Z is complete this March."
