What do you think your best and worst qualities are?

"I would have to say that one of the things I'd like to improve about myself and that most people recognize about me is I always want to be the 'fixer.' While I know that this is not always a negative thing, for me, I have often let the fact that I couldn't fix a certain situation be something that troubled me. On a lighter note, I believe I have a positive, out-going personality. I enjoy getting to know others and like to make them feel comfortable."

No one wants to share anything negative about themselves. However, any honest person will admit that he has both good and bad characteristics. The important thing is recognizing the things that may need to be improved and being willing to address them. Share some things about your personal qualities with the interviewer and remember, when sharing any quality that could be improved, tell how you are working to make a change.

"My best quality, I believe, is that I am willing to work on any project I am asked to take on. My worst quality is that I am willing to take on too many projects at once. I've had to learn to pace myself and prioritize things that need to be done so that am not overwhelmed and so that my quality of work does not suffer because I am too busy."

What are your thoughts regarding people who become participants in a clinical trial but leave before the trial ends?

"All participants are given the choice to withdraw during any stage of the process, and that is their right. Without knowing why a participant chooses to leave a trial, it would be difficult to say exactly how I feel about their exiting the trial. Some people become ill or cannot take the effects of the treatment and are forced to leave, while others simply change their minds for personal reasons. At the end of the day, it's my responsibility to inform them of the risk and benefits upfront so they can make an informed decision."

Participants can typically quit a clinical trial at any time for any reason, so it's something that you will experience at Parexel. The interviewer would like to learn more about your experience with this situation and to understand your views on participants who commit to a clinical trial, then withdraw for one reason or another. Give your thoughts on the topic without being overly negative or critical.

"I have experienced participants dropping out of clinical trials before. I typically have a conversation with them to better understand their reason for withdrawing and see how I can support them. Sometimes, they have such adverse reactions to the drug they are unable to continue, which is very understandable. I have seen others whose disease was progressing rapidly, and they chose to withdraw to spend their remaining days with family. If it's something I can help with, for example, lack of transportation, I try to provide resources so they can continue the trial. Ultimately, it's the participant's decision to continue or withdraw, and they have to do what's best for them. Though it can be frustrating, I always remain compassionate, respectful, and professional, whatever decision they make."

What is something that causes you stress at work and how do you try to overcome it?

"I think we all experience stress in different ways. One of the most experienced work-related stress, for me, is not being able to give everyone the results that they want in a clinical trial. Although it is frustrating, I am also mature enough to know that if we don't succeed at something today, tomorrow we can try again."

Working at Parexel is fast-paced and perhaps stressful at times. The interviewer wants to hear that you can handle the pressure and have experience dealing with stress in the workplace. Describe some techniques you use to manage stress at work and give examples, if possible. Avoid complaining or being negative in your answer.

"I think I cause myself more stress than any external event or situation. I say that because I put a great deal of pressure on myself to be successful and see things through to the end. As researchers we don't always get the results we are hoping for. I have to remind myself that that is why we do research. We search, and then we re-search."

At Parexel, we work collaboratively to maximize our collective strength. How do you promote teamwork in the workplace?

"I recently read an article that talked about four aspects of teamwork; contributors, communicators, challengers, and collaborators. I promote teamwork in the workplace, by bringing a healthy mix of all of these characteristics. For example, I help facilitate team chats, weekly connection points, AGILE calls, and communications to inform the team of updates. In other situations, I promote teamwork and innovation by providing ideas and asking probing questions to help brainstorm, I help set goals, keep track of the progress of our goals, and help pick up extra tasks where needed to make sure the team is successful."

As part of Parexel's empowerment and accountability values, they promote collaboration to maximize collective strengths. You'll likely be working alongside a diverse group of professionals, working together to achieve common goals, so teamwork is critical. Describe ways that you promote teamwork and collaboration in the workplace and how you will contribute to supporting these core values.

"I work as part of a very small department of five, so we rely heavily on one another to keep up with tasks and projects to be successful. The work that we do is often time-sensitive, so we have to be closely aligned and communicate effectively so everyone understands the goals, tasks, and expectations. In such a small group, we each need to be willing to do our part as individual contributors, but also jump in and help a team member where needed so as not to miss goals or deadlines."

Why do you feel that participation in a clinical trial is a positive decision?

"I believe that participants in clinical trials play a key role in the development and discovery of new medicine, procedures, and products that can better the lives of others. Clinical trials contribute to knowledge and progress in treating and preventing diseases, so even if a person doesn't benefit directly, they are still helping others. Most importantly, participants can help others by contributing to medical knowledge and improving public health."

Those working for Parexel must be passionate about research and clinical trials, so naturally, you must also understand the benefits to those participating in such activities. While this question does ask your personal opinion, be sure to support it with facts. This will show the interviewer you are knowledgeable about the topic of discussion while providing insight into your views on participation in such clinical trials.

"There are many benefits associated with participating in clinical trials. For someone suffering from a disease or disorder, it could mean gaining access to new treatments not yet available to the public. Another benefit is receiving medical care from leading experts in the medical field. Although it is possible that the clinical trial is not effective for someone, there is still the societal benefit because that person has contributed to research and studies that could lead to future treatments for others also suffering from similar diseases or disorders."

Knowing that both CROs and pharmaceutical companies conduct research and trials, what do you think would be an advantage working with a CRO like Parexel, rather than seeking employment with a large pharmaceutical company?

"I feel there is more job stability because CROs work with several clients or sponsors. If one project is dropped unexpectedly or the contract ends, a CRO can easily place an employee on a new project with a different sponsor. CROs are, to a certain extent, better shielded from the effects of economic decline than pharmaceutical companies. If one of their clients is forced to go under, they still have other companies to work with."

The interviewer would like to know if you understand the differences between CROs and pharmaceutical companies. They also want to hear your views on working for a CRO like Parexel versus a standard pharmaceutical company like Amgen or Johnson & Johnson. Consider the benefits of working for a CRO and select a couple to highlight in your answers. Keep your response positive and avoid speaking negatively about pharmaceutical companies, as many now often outsource some of their work to CROs.

"In many pharmaceutical companies, only a few drugs are studied. In a CRO, because you work with many clients and sponsors globally, you have more opportunities to work on various drug and device projects across a more diverse range of therapeutic areas. Not only does this give you more experience and opportunities to expand your skills, but it also allows for more growth opportunities. I have also found that CROs offer more resources from an experience and technology perspective, which is a major benefit."

If you had your choice of a research project to work on at Parexel, what would you choose?

"Research is such an exciting area of healthcare and I know that Parexel places a high value on oncology research. If I had a choice, I would love to work on any project that has to do with cancer research. Cancer is a dreadful diagnosis and I would love to have some part in helping to find better ways to treat and hopefully cure it."

Parexel conducts research on many therapeutic areas including oncology & hematology, infectious diseases & vaccines, inflammation and immunology, neuroscience, general medicine, rare diseases, and cell and gene therapies. This could be just a light-hearted question to learn more about your areas of interest or they could be planning to learn more so that they know how to align you with a team. If you're familiar with a certain project that Parexel is working on that piques your interest, feel free to share that, or you can give a more broad answer that would fall under a general category mentioned above.

"I love to learn and am interested in many different topics of study and research, but my passion is for rare diseases. I know that through your Center of Excellence for Rare Diseases, Parexel works With Heart(TM) to meet timelines with a best-in-class team of rare disease leaders and a seamless intersection of the clinical trial with the patient and caregiver's journey. I'm very excited by the work that Parexel does in this area and would love to learn and participate in future research projects."

Parexel tries to accommodate employees with regard to scheduling preferences as much as possible. Is there a particular schedule that would a better fit with your personal/family responsibilities?

"I am not married and have no children at this time. So, I am pretty flexible with my schedule. If I had a choice, I would prefer the late shift, as I am a bit of a night owl. However, I am excited about the opportunity to become a part of this team and am willing to work where I'm needed."

Many people work more than one job or have a one parent home which requires them to have a flexible schedule. Others simply prefer to work one shift rather than another. Being up front with the interviewer about what schedule suits your preference could help prevent conflict later on. It is easier to plan a schedule you can agree on than it is to fix problems that arise due to fear of being rejected. Be honest and direct.

"I am a single mom with two school-aged children. Ideally, the day shift would be a better fit for me. This would allow me to fulfill both my work and home responsibilities without a conflict."

If a trial participant at Parexel asks you to explain what a placebo is and why it may be used, what would your answer be?

"I would explain to the participant that a placebo is an inactive pill, liquid, or powder with no treatment value. I would further explain that in a placebo-controlled trial, some portion of the participants will receive a placebo instead of an active drug or experimental treatment and that this is done to assess the experimental treatment's effectiveness and safety versus no treatment at all. I would likely go a step further and explain who in the study would know if the participant received a placebo and who would not."

Understanding terminology is essential, especially if your role at Parexel is to educate participants in a clinical trial. This is another question that the interviewer will use to test your knowledge, experience, communication skills, and ability to educate participants.

"I will tell the participant that a placebo is a liquid, powder, or pill that has no treatment value and is used in clinical trials to determine the difference between the active drug or experiment compared to no treatment at all. I would also explain the benefits and risks so they understood going into the trial that they may not receive any treatment."

Are you familiar with what 'expanded access' means?

"It is my understanding that 'expanded access' is granted, under certain circumstances, to patients who do not qualify to participate in a clinical trial of a regulatory drug. The drug used in expanded access cannot expose patients to unreasonable risks given the severity of the disease to be treated and the patient must not have any other satisfactory therapeutic options."

Expanded access is the term used to describe the means by which manufacturers like Parexel make new drugs that are being investigated available, under certain circumstances, to treat a patient(s) with a serious disease or condition who cannot participate in a controlled clinical trial. If you have experience working with patients who have been given expanded access, share some details, as appropriate. If you don't have personal experience, share your knowledge.

"I do have some knowledge about 'expanded access' although I have not worked directly with patients who have been giveThe manufacturer must be willing to make the drug available for expanded access use. The primary intent of expanded access is to provide treatment for a patient's disease or condition, rather than to collect data about the study drug."

Do you understand what a 'double-blind' trial is?

"A 'double-blind' trial is a clinical trial in which neither patients nor the study staff knows which participants are receiving the experimental drug and which are receiving a placebo or standard treatment. The benefit of this type of trial is that it prevents bias when doctors are evaluating patients throughout the trial. In my previous role, I supported a mix of trials, and double-blind trials made up about 25% of the projects I was on."

Understanding the differences between the different types of clinical trials is essential when working in research at Parexel. In a double-blind trial, neither patients nor personnel knows which trial participants are receiving the experimental drug and which are receiving the placebo. Any time you can answer an interviewer's question with confidence and correct knowledge, you increase your chances of being offered employment. Describe your understanding and give a brief description of your experience relating to the topic.

"Yes, I do understand 'double-blind' trials. In this type of trial, like a controlled trial, one group of participants receives the experimental drug or treatment while another group receives a placebo or standard treatment. The difference is, in a 'double-blind', neither the staff working the trial nor the participants is aware which group is receiving which treatment."

Do you have an understanding of what a 'control' or 'control group' is?

"Yes, I do understand the importance of a 'control/control group' in trials. I assisted with documentation for a clinical trial when I worked at XYZ. Part of my responsibilities included monitoring the differences in vital signs of the patients who were given a placebo as compared to those who were taking the trial drug."

A control is the standard by which experimental observations are evaluated. In many clinical trials, one group of patients will be given an experimental drug or treatment, and the control group is given either a standard treatment for the illness or a placebo. If you have worked with clinical trials/observations, you will understand what the 'control' or 'control group' is. If you have not, discuss what you do know. In most cases, an interviewer will know if you already have clinical trial experience and will know where to guide you with a question like this.

"I am familiar with a control/control group. It is my understanding that when a clinical trials is being conducted, some participants are given the trial drug while the 'control group' is given either the standard treatment or a placebo, but that only the person administering the drug knows who is receiving which."

Are you familiar with the difference between diagnostic trials and screening trials?

"Yes, I am familiar with the differences and have experience supporting both. Diagnostic trials are conducted to find better tests or procedures for diagnosing a particular disease or condition. Screening trials test the best way to detect certain diseases or health conditions. In my last role, I participated in many screening trials that were part of a cancer research study."

Parexel is among the world's largest clinical research organizations (CROs), providing the full range of Phase I to IV clinical development services to help life-saving treatments reach patients faster. Knowing the differences between various types of trials will be critical. Because there is such a variety of different trials, there is often an opportunity to work on more than one. Many researchers have stated that they like this option as it gives them the chance to learn more and not experience 'burnout' as easily. If you know the difference in the trials in this question, elaborate on them briefly. If you are not sure, it's okay to be honest but demonstrate your desire to learn more.

"Although I am rather new to the research industry, based on the names of the two trials you mentioned, I would think that diagnostic trials look for better ways to diagnose illness while screening trials are aimed at ways to detect disease. I'm interested in learning more about both, particularly through the prevention trials. In college, I did several projects relating to this area of research and study and would love to explore this area."

"The primary purpose of screening tests is to detect early disease or risk factors for disease in large numbers of apparently healthy individuals, taking images or questionnaires. The purpose of a diagnostic test is to establish the presence (or absence) of disease as a basis for treatment decisions in symptomatic or screen positive individuals, confirmatory test."

What, if any, types of data analytic tools are you familiar with?

"When I worked at ICON, we used a proprietary CDAS to harmonize complex and disconnected data, and we used artificial intelligence to develop insights and improve outcomes. I'm also familiar with JMP and Stata platforms. There is such a benefit to being able to analyze trial performance data in real-time. Does Parexel use any of the tools I mentioned?"

Many data analytic tools could be used at Parexel, depending on the stage of use. For example, descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive, and cognitive analytics are different stages in the process. Give the interviewer insight into your experience using these tools and which specifically you have used before. If you do not have experience, be honest, but demonstrate your desire and ability to learn.

"While I have not used any tools in the workplace, during my time in college, we did study several data analytic tools. I understand these tools are used to enable researchers to draw meaningful conclusions through data collected from observations, surveys, and experiments. I'm very tech-savvy and have no doubt that whatever tools Parexel uses, I will learn and utilize them quickly. I'm eager to learn more and gain that knowledge and experience."

CROs work with multiple clients nationally and internationally, which means employees are often expected to juggle time zones and adhere to the sponsor's tight deadlines. What are some things you do to help manage your time efficiently?

"I have worked with clients internationally and understand the important of accurate scheduling. Before beginning any new project, I always like to verify the differences in time zones, what specific duties I will be expected to carry out and the deadline for each. I then create a schedule on computer with daily reminders that I check each morning and make sure I am on schedule."

Because CROs like Parexel are contracted to work for other companies, details such as time zone differences can often play a big role in scheduling. The interviewer wants to know that you are able to juggle multiple tasks within an allotted time frame. Share some ways you keep yourself organized during a work day.

"I like to stay on track with projects. I am a visual learner and because of that, I make a schedule on paper and keep it in a place that is visible (desktop/bulletin board, etc). As I complete a task, I mark it off and move to the next."

What are some of the risks associated with being a participant in a clinical trial?

"There are many risks of clinical trials that participants need to know about to make the best decision for themselves. Some possible risks include known and unknown side effects or exacerbation of other conditions. From another perspective, clinical trials can be time-consuming and require a lot of travel back and forth for the study, lab procedures, and follow-up visits. There is also the possibility that the treatment doesn't work or they are given a placebo. I'm well versed in explaining these risks to participants and fielding their follow-up questions."

As with any clinical trial, those that Parexel conducts may involve some risks to participants. The interviewer wants to understand your knowledge of potential risks with clinical trials and your experience explaining those risks to participants. Give a brief overview of risks associated with clinical trials and any experience you have providing that education to participants.

"While there are many benefits to participating in clinical trials, there are associated risks that participants need to be aware of. There could be adverse side effects and complications that could cause illness or discomfort. Another risk is that participants may not know that they are receiving a placebo and, as a result, will not have the outcome they had hoped for. Additionally, there could be significant costs associated with participating, and the patient will need to weigh the benefits and risks. I do my best to communicate all risks and to answer any questions they may have about the process. If I cannot assist them, I will find another team member who can support them."

Are you familiar with Parexel's core values?

"Yes! I'm very familiar with the four core values of patients first, respect, empowerment and accountability, and quality. I align with all four personally and professionally, but I'm really most inspired by the patients first value. I love that your website notes that each person at Parexel, regardless of their role, contributes to the development of a therapy that ultimately benefits patients. You treat patients as people and not just numbers or results. That mentality promotes collaboration, motivation, and self-worth for each employee in the workplace."

Parexel places a great emphasis on its core value system. The interviewer will likely ask a question to test your knowledge of the four core values, as it will be an expectation that you demonstrate them if offered a position. These are important to know so that you can weave your alignment into not only this answer but also other relevant questions throughout the interview.

"Through research prior to this interview, I learned the four core values are patients first, respect, empowerment, and accountability and quality. It was reassuring to know that Parexel puts patients first, values different perspectives and cultures, and leverages the strengths and expertise of all employees to collaborate and improve patient outcomes."

Parexel likes to encourage a healthy work/life balance. What are some things you like to do make sure you have a healthy balance between work and your personal life?

"One of my favorite pastimes is writing. After a busy day at work, I like to journal or write articles for a blog that I author. Both of these forms of writing allow me to release any feelings of frustration I may experience, especially after a stressful day or a difficult situation at work. The writings in my journal are private and my way of 'letting it all out.' The blog articles, on the other hand, are my way of using creative writing to share stories with my followers."

No matter what profession a person chooses, everyone needs some time to unwind and relax. Psychologists today say that a healthy balance in life allows a person to recharge and refocus which can result in better productivity at work. The interviewer simply wants to know what you do for you. Maybe you have a favorite pass-time or hobby. This is yet another way for the interviewer to get to know you as a person.

"I really enjoy working out at the gym and, I also take a kickboxing class twice weekly. After a good workout or class, I always feel like I can rest better and wake up energized and ready for the next day."

Why do you want to work at Parexel?

"When I started my job search, I researched the top CROs and learned more about each. Parexel consistently ranks in the top five, which impressed me. I want to join an organization with a good reputation with patients, employees, and the industry. I have experience in many of the areas Parexel offers services, more specifically, specializing in translational medicine. I also align with the company's core values of putting patients first and taking quality seriously."

There are many employers to choose from in the clinical research industry, so the interviewer is trying to discover why you're interested in working for Parexel in particular. Perhaps you've researched their mission and values, and they align with your own, or maybe you've researched company and employee reviews and found Parexel impressive. Whatever your reasoning, give the interviewer insight into why they are your employer of choice.

"I've been very intentional in my job search and when I was researching Parexel on Comparably, I was impressed to see employee reviews that rated the culture, CEO, and leadership team A+. Knowing that 82% of employees had positive things to say speaks volumes and employee satisfaction, culture, and leadership are all important to me. I am passionate about research and am looking to join a company with a strong reputation in the industry that can allow me opportunities to grow and develop in my role."

"A few major competitors of Parexel include ICON, PRA Health Services, and IQVIA. To me, Parexel is set apart by its DE&I initiatives and focus on supporting women in the workplace. Recently, I read that Amy McKee, M.D., Chief Medical Officer & Head of the Oncology Center of Excellence has been recognized as a 2023 Luminary by the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association for her service as a role model within Parexel, actively mentoring and sponsoring others, helping advance women's careers and exhibiting dedication to the healthcare community. This is very important to me and I love that this is the culture promoted at Parexel."

Research Parexel before your interview and familiarize yourself with their competitors and how they differentiate themselves. Consider aspects like revenue, recent clinical or scientific accomplishments, culture, employee reviews, reputation, stability, or other awards and achievements you've recently seen in the media. Discuss your findings with the interviewer, and be sure to speak highly of Parexel while answering this question.

"I'm familiar with competitors like Syneos Health, PPD and IQVIA. As part of my job search, I was seeking an organization with a solid reputation, and stability, and one that offers remote opportunities. I think Parexel stands out in all of these areas. I recently saw an article where Parexe, was named a Top 100 Company to Watch for Remote Jobs in 2023! In it, Parexel was recognized as a company that promotes flexibility in work environments and also was one of only five companies to have made the FlexJobs' list each year since its inception in 2014. That's an incredible accomplishment!"

What made you choose a career in research?

"When I was a child, one of my friends was diagnosed with leukemia. From the time she became ill I wanted to find a way to fix her. She eventually experienced remission and is still well today. I never lost my desire to find ways to help people and research has one of the broadest platforms I could think of."

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. The interviewer simply wants to get to know you. If something happened in your life that made you want to contribute to research, share it. Or maybe you have an inquisitive nature.

"Science was always intriguing to me. From the time I was a kid, I was always the one with the experimental labs and the nurse kits. Finding a career in research was a natural choice for me!"

"The pharmaceutical industry is responsible for bringing in new drugs for the treatment of diseases. For this, it largely depends on clinical studies and trials conducted by clinical research teams that include research associates and other professionals."

Do you have any project management-related certificates that might benefit you at Parexel?

"My current company partnered with ACRP to provide a certificate called "Project Management for Clinical Research Professionals." It was a two-day course that covered improving timeline design and management and enhancing documentation. Though it was a short program, I found the information extremely valuable. I have also been exploring Rutgers online certificate in Pharmaceuticals and Clinical Trials Management. It looks to be a 12-month program that focuses on drug development and discovery, which would enhance my current skillset."

Some positions at Parexel may require a special certificate, and others may list it as "preferred." Describe any certifications that you currently possess. If you've taken courses or training informally, now is a great time to mention those. If obtaining a certificate is an area of interest, discuss the certificates you would like to obtain in the future.

"I'm currently in the process of completing the DIA Project Management Certificate. It's been a great course that covers conflict management, budget planning, and adverse event reporting. I'm also interested in another certificate called Clinical Project Management Fundamentals offered through Barnett Internation. It's a 30-hour program that covers developing project plans related to clinical trials from start to finish."

Describe your experience working with clinical research studies.

"I have been a clinical research coordinator for about ten years and have been assigned to several cancer-related clinical trials ranging in size from 10 participants to 100 participants. As a coordinator, my roles have included overseeing recruitment for studies, ensuring ethical research standards are followed throughout the study, and administering exit questionnaires to participants. As a coordinator, I have worked with a diverse group of professionals on clinical trials and love being a part of such a collaborative and robust team."

Parexel employs many clinical research team members. including clinical research associates, scientists, nurses, and managers, to name a few. Regardless of the position you're applying for, the interviewer will want to know more about your experience with clinical research studies or trials. Read the job description thoroughly to pick out skills they are looking for, and speak to those areas in your response. Give a high-level overview of your roles and responsibilities and the areas of study you're familiar with (vaccines, medications, etc.).

"As a clinical research assistant, my main duties were related to participant management. In my five years at my current company, I have recruited and enrolled over 500 participants for various vaccine trials. Additionally, it was my responsibility to communicate with participants throughout the study and keep meticulous notes and documentation throughout. I often served as a liaison in the process and would be the point of contact when participants had questions or concerns."

Do you have experience creating PowerPoints and presenting in front of groups?

"In my current role, I'm responsible for creating presentations and delivering them to potential clinical trial participants. I create my presentations to be visually appealing and engaging, so I'm not just talking at participants the entire time. I'm tech-savvy and comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people, so this is not an area of concern for me. I'm used to presenting to large groups once or twice a week and in groups as large as 50 people."

You may be expected to plan, prepare, and deliver presentations to patients, clients, or other stakeholders at Parexel. As most of us know, public speaking can be intimidating for many people. It's okay to be nervous; however, the interviewer wants to see that these nerves do not get in the way of your preparation and ability to communicate well. Speak about your experience with this task.

"Most of my public speaking experience comes from my time in college, where I prepared a variety of speeches and slide decks in my communications course. I am a confident public speaker and could present to a group of my peers without any issues. I look forward to gaining even more experience in preparing and delivering professional presentations for sponsors and my peers."

Do you have experience working with any other CROs?

"Yes, I worked at ICON for about five years and supported projects relating to patient recruitment, site identification and selection, and assistance with protocol design. Before that, I worked at Parexel for two years in their decentralized clinical trial department. I'm familiar with the CRO model and structure and bring several years of experience in this environment."

A CRO is a clinical research organization contracted by a sponsor to conduct research and clinical trials. The interviewer at Parexel would like to learn more about your background in this environment and whether you have worked for competitors like ICON, IQVIA, Syneos Health, etc. Give an honest answer. If you have no experience with other CROs, it's okay to acknowledge that but give some insight into your background, education, and experience that will transfer to Parexel.

"While I have never worked for a CRO, I'm very familiar with what they do and how they operate. My background is in sales, with biopharmaceutical experience at Johnson & Johnson and Amgen. "The largest diverse group I worked with was probably when I did my clinical rotation at University Medical Center. I was afforded the opportunity to meet people from different cultures, religions, and professional backgrounds. It gave me an eye-opening experience of how many wonderful people there are!"

When working for a CRO, diversity among peers and clients should be expected. Some people are intimidated when faced with learning new cultures and beliefs, but in the healthcare industry, it is crucial to provide effective care. The interviewer wants to know that you are open to meeting and learning about new people and becoming an integral part of the team. Be positive with your response.

"I think diversity in the healthcare industry is essential. People from all over the world now call our country their home. I believe learning about and showing an appreciation for people from different walks of life only makes us stronger as we build upon the common bond of caring for others."

Have you ever participated in efforts to secure funding for clinical research?

"I have some experience, but not a lot, with regard to grant-writing. I worked with someone previously who did some grant-writing for a long-term care facility. I tried to learn as much as I could from her and would love the opportunity to learn more."

Clinical trials can be sponsored or funded by a variety of organizations or individuals including physicians, medical institutions, foundations, voluntary groups, and pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DOD), Human Health and Services (HHS), and the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) support some clinical trials. If you have experience grant writing or using other experience to secure funding, this could be a plus. Share any knowledge or experience you have.

"Unfortunately, the finance side of trials has never been a place where I've had an opportunity to work. I understand that funding comes from various places and I am not opposed to learning about ways to secure funding and offer assistance in any way I can."

What would you tell a patient who is asking some of the things he/she should expect while participating in a clinical trial?

"I believe in making sure that patients are educated regarding any time of care they are going to receive. For patients participating in trials, it is important to assure them that participants work with a research or clinical trial team, including doctors, nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals. Prior to the trial, the research team will check the health of the participant and review any special instructions for trial participation. As the trial begins and throughout its duration, the research team will administer treatment and monitor the participant on a regular basis to determine effectiveness and side-effects of the treatment."

It is important for patients to be well informed before beginning any treatment whether it is routine care by a physician or participation in a clinical trial. The interviewer wants to know that you have an understanding of what the patient's expectations of care should be and that you are comfortable with sharing that with the patient.

"The most important thing is to make sure that patients are aware of the objective of the trial. For example, if a new drug is being tested, the objective would be that the drug is effective in treating the disease it was designed for with little to no ill-effects. Also, assuring the participant that the research team will work closely with them throughout the duration of the trial. Many patients are also relieved to know that the research team will work closely with their primary physician throughout the trial."

If a patient wants to participate in a clinical trial but wants the physician conducting the experiment to provide all of his care during the time the trial is being conducted, what would be the most appropriate advice?

"I understand that many patients prefer to not see multiple physicians. However, it is important for patients participating in clinical trials to be educated about the role of the staff conducting the trial. For example, the medication or therapy that is used for a clinical trial is usually focused on a specific illness/disease. It is important for patients to follow-up and have continued care with their primary physician. Additionally, providers who are conducting clinical trials find it beneficial to have communication with the primary physician so that we can work together for the best outcome for the patient."

Most clinical trials provide short-term treatments related to a designated illness or condition, but do not provide extended or complete primary health care. In addition, by having the health care provider work with the research team, the participant can ensure that other medications or treatments will not conflict with the protocol. The interviewer is not asking for 'facts,' but rather how you would relate directly with a patient who is making this request.

"I have always been taught that patients are advised to continue regular follow-ups and care for non-trial related medical issues with their primary care provider. Also, the research teams I have been a part of have always made it a priority to collaborate with the primary physician. First of all, it is a professional courtesy. Further, the open line of communication allows the healthcare team and patient to work together more effectively."

Can you think of a time you had a disagreement with a boss or co-worker, and if so, how was it resolved?

"I believe if we think about it, each of us could remember at least one disagreement with a friend or co-worker. Although I consider myself to be pretty easy-going, I am also very passionate about my patients and the care that they receive. I have been aware of disagreements between other co-workers, but really like to think of myself as more of a peacekeeper. I feel like professional people should be able to discuss things logically and come to an agreement that is satisfactory for everyone involved."

Any time you work with someone else, there is a chance of having a disagreement about something at one time or another. The interviewer knows this. It's human nature for people to have their own opinions. What is important to the interviewer in this question is whether or not you are willing to compromise and work through difficult situations with your co-workers. Being unwilling to compromise or find alternative solutions to a dispute can affect everyone on the team, even if it is indirectly. Sharing a personal experience is OK, but do not embellish it to 'be the hero.'

"I think the most common disagreement between myself and others have involved our personal feelings about how healthcare should be carried out. However, I have learned, as have most of the people that I have worked with, that while our opinions are important, plans of care are designated by strict guidelines and with the input of everyone on the care team as well as the patient. Learning to respect those guidelines and patient wishes usually resolves issues that arise."
