How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"I had a manager a few years ago who made it a point to write very simple, hand-written notes for her employees when she noticed that we had performed particularly well, from a great customer interaction to completion of a huge project. Every once in awhile, the notes would also include a small gift card to a local restaurant or shop -- just a small token of appreciation. That was the best recognition I could hope for; I don't like to be in the spotlight, so public recognition is a nightmare for me, but knowing that my manager took the time to say thank you in such a personal way made a huge impact on me."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work in case something catches me by surprise. That way, I'm not stressed out if something happens because I've already prepared for it in advance. The extra time I build into getting to work will give me time to contact my manager if I get delayed -- and if nothing else, it never hurts to arrive to work early!"

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.

"I'm really cool-headed and even-tempered, so I don't panic when something unexpected happens on the way to work. I had a flat tire a few months ago when I was going into the store where I currently work, and I immediately called my manager and let her know I was on my way but had been delayed. I changed the tire and ended up making it to work only about fifteen minutes late for my shift."

Do you have reliable transportation?

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

What do you hope to learn from this job at Office Depot?

"I'm looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I'm excited to gain a working knowledge of the way that stores work because I'm looking to take my career in retail to the next level. I'm especially interested in management on a large scale -- my goal is to one day become a district or regional manager, and I know I have a lot to learn! We need reliable people on our team at Office Depot. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I've been working in IT for the past few years, and I'm definitely ready to make the transition to a retail environment. My work in IT has been pretty solitary and stationary, so I'm looking for a job that gets me up on my feet, where I can release my energetic, fun personality and work together with other people instead of being stuck in a cubicle all day. I'm definitely not interested in a job that's mundane, so I'm excited about the possibility of working on the team here."

"First and foremost, I'm a major team-player: I'm a huge extrovert, so I love to work with others for that reason; but I've also found that I do my best work when I'm on a team of like-minded, positive, happy coworkers who enjoy their work. "Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their style of communication and emulate it. Sometimes you have to relate to others in their style to be understood."

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"When I first started out in retail, I didn't expect to make it a career -- it was just a summer job in between college semesters. But my manager at that first job was so engaging, so excited about the work that I really started to fall in love with it, too. She inspired a shared vision for our team, had an open-door policy for ideas as well as complaints, and asked for our feedback on her work as a manager just as often as she gave us feedback on our work. That first experience helped cement retail as my chosen career path, and I haven't looked back since."

She always pushed me to do my best by believing in my potential, and I've always appreciated the way she approached her work as a manager."

"I'm excited about getting started at Office Depot because there are a lot of things I would like to do in my career, and I'm in the process of narrowing down some options. I'm interested in learning more about store management and development -- I love to organize things and people, so I'd like to develop my interpersonal communication skills as well as learn more about the other responsibilities inherent in store management. I'm also interested in expanding my career in sales to be a sales representative, so I'm curious to find out more about what that career path looks like. I'm excited about all of the learning opportunities at Office Depot -- I think this will be a great first step in my career with the company."

What is the most competitive work situation you have experienced? How did you handle it? What was the result?

"I'm a competitive person by nature, so I feel very engaged by competing with other companies in our market. I do my best work when I'm on a team that has a common goal, especially on a team with people I care about who have a vision that I feel aligned with. I'm definitely prepared to bring my quick-thinking, strategic mind to my job at Office Depot."

Tell me about a time when you made a suggestion requesting change in an organization.

"I very much appreciate that Office Depot works hard to foster an environment of innovation where ideas are freely exchanged without fear of challenging the status quo. It makes me really excited about the possibility of working here. Last year when I was managing our weekend shift, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity for us to save on overtime hours. I created a presentation and took it to my manager. The changes were implemented, and I was very proud of the suggestion I made."

"When I first started at my current job, I noticed that the waste levels were through the roof, and we didn't have a system in place for reusing or recycling. I did some research on local recycling programs and then came up with an idea to get my coworkers involved in volunteering to sort recyclables during work. I set up a point and rewards system, took the plan to my manager, and she was thrilled. We implemented the plan and were able to reduce our waste by 27% in just a few months! It was great to see my team working together, too -- I feel like the friendly competition for points actually made us much closer as a team."

This position requires a flexible schedule as we are open evenings, weekends, and most holidays. Are you able to commit to these hours?

"I am happy to offer a flexible schedule, and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days, after 5 PM."

"A few years ago, I started working for a very small company that didn't have any kind of marketing strategy, and their website was very outdated. They had a strong base of customers but weren't experiencing the growth they were hoping for. Without being asked, I spent several evenings after work doing research on successful marketing campaigns and websites, then I put together a strategy for the owners. I scheduled a meeting, presented my ideas to them, and they were super enthusiastic. We implemented the strategy and revamped the website, and new customers started pouring in. It's one of the things I'm most proud of in my career."

He looked so grateful and relieved, so I went and grabbed the coloring supplies, told my manager the situation, and sat on the floor with the kids for about fifteen minutes while the customer finished up his shopping. It was a small thing for me to do, but I know it made a huge impact on his day. That's what customer service really means to me: finding small opportunities to make big impacts."

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

"My most challenging position, and also my most favorite position, would be my current role. I would not normally choose to leave; however, I need to find a position related to my newly acquired degree. In my current position, the hours are great, my co-workers are nice, and I receive fair compensation."

"My most recent employer would say that I have strong character and always choose honesty first. I have solid references who will attest to that as well."

In a retail environment, staff turnover is often high. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift?

"I am more than willing to cover a shift for a co-worker if I am able. I don't mind accepting overtime hours and do consider myself to be a team player."

Being flexible in your schedule is valuable as a retail-based employee. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift and you were asked to cover? Assure the interviewer that you are a team player.

"If a co-worker failed to show up for their shift, I would pick it up if possible. I always strive to be a team player."

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a co-worker?

"If I had a customer who was being aggressive and disrespectful, I would calmly but firmly ask them to calm down. If security needed to be called, I would do so. Everyone needs to remain respectful, and I would not hesitate to ask a customer to offer that respect, in return."

Retail and customer service based roles will often require diplomacy when it comes to working with the public. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle an aggressive customer.

"Most places that I have worked have procedures in place for these kinds of scenarios, and I am happy to follow the procedures put in place by Office Depot."

"I think that uniforms are a great way to provide a feeling of unity in the workplace. May I see what your uniforms look like?"

In this role you will be required to use the Point of Sale system and other technology to complete customer transactions. How confident do you feel about your ability to use technology at work?

"I've worked for large retailers for a number of years, so I feel very confident about my ability to use the POS system and any other technology."

Sales associates at Office Depot must possess the ability to use technology applicable to the role and to assess information necessary to complete daily responsibilities. You'll be expected to process information and merchandise through our POS register system. Have you worked with a POS system before? How comfortable do you feel committing to using technology like this at work?

"I haven't worked in retail before, so I've never used a Point of Sale system. That being said, I know how important it is in our modern workforce to be fluent with tech, apps, and any other equipment necessary to serve customers. I'm confident I can quickly learn all of the required technology for the store."

Office Depot employees are restricted from reselling items they've purchased with their employee discount for a profit. How would you react if you discovered a coworker breaking this rule?

"Breaking this policy ultimately equates with stealing from the company, and I have a huge moral problem with that. I know that Office Depot values integrity and accountability, and I know I would be expected to always tell the truth in my role here. If I noticed a coworker stealing from the company in this way, I would immediately take it to my manager. There's no excuse for that kind of behavior."

That behavior goes against the integrity and honesty that our company was founded on. "The employee discount here is amazing, and I would be really angry if I found out that a coworker was abusing it. If I only suspected that a coworker was doing this, I would first go to them directly and ask if it was true. If they denied it but didn't convince me that they were telling the truth, I would go to my manager immediately. It would be hard to know that I was involved in a coworker being fired, but I also know what the right thing is in that situation."

"That 100% Satisfaction Guarantee is hard to beat -- it's hard to imagine a customer complaining or arguing with the policy! If a customer was trying to return an excluded product -- like a custom-made item, for instance -- I would explain to them the reasons behind the company's policy so that they understood where the company was coming from. If the customer was still upset or frustrated, I would check with my manager to see if we could offer the customer a one-time 'peace-offering,' such as a small coupon or merchandise card, so that the customer leaves the store feeling cared for and like their frustrations were heard."
