"I define success by my ability to reach the goals that are set out for me. On a personal level, the things I wish to achieve in my life. On a work level, the targets that are set out for me as well as the professional development that I seek."

"I do consider myself a patient person. I would rate myself an eight /10 for patience because I certainly have room to grow, but I do have a very long fuse. If I need a boost of patience in a challenging situation, I will take a step away, count to 10 and then return to the situation. I recently read a book, 'The Power of Patience' by M.J. Ryan which also gave me some excellent new methods for coping with stress."

"When I initially started my job four years ago I was a junior level operator. Today, I am responsible for leading a team of 8 operators. My role does not look the same at all, and I am thankful for the growth opportunity that my current company has offered me. In addition to the change in leadership responsibilities, I have also enjoyed two major promotions. I attribute this to hard work and dedication."

"I started my current position as an outside sales representative. It has evolved quite a bit in the last 4.5 years to include estimating, project management, and service/commissioning in addition to my sales role."

Tell me about the most challenging problem you encountered in your professional career.

"The most challenging problem I have encountered in my professional career was with my most recent employer. I had an incredibly important project that made up the majority of my annual budget. The client was challenging to work with as he was rarely available for comment, due to extensive international travel. I needed this deal to work out so, for the 6-month span of the project, I made my work hours reflect his time zone. This allowed us to communicate via Skype on a daily basis. This meant a fair share of late night and early morning calls for me! It was a sacrifice; however, I would do it again. I understand that sacrifices need to be made for successful outcomes to happen."

"The most challenging problem I have had was in my current position. My employer was transitioning into the oil and gas industry and had a very small footprint. I was tasked with growing that business during the COVID shutdowns of 2020, where most offices were shut down and not allowing visitors. Using a combination of email, phone, and social media campaigns we were able to connect with potential customers and grow our customer base to over $10,000,000 in the oil and gas sector."

What is your personal mission statement?

"My mantra is that 'people who shine from within do not need the spotlight.' I feel that it is incredibly important to be a humble leader and I take this mission statement very seriously. I want my team to be in the spotlight rather than being the kind of leader that takes credit for good work."

Not everyone has a mission statement or personal mantra. However, a career minded individual who has taken charge of their own development typically has a 5 year career plan, and has written out their core values and their mission statement. Doing so makes it easier to identify like-minded opportunities that provide a symbiotic match for an employer/employee relationship. "I am not sure that I have a personal mission statement; however, my mission is to always treat people with respect and kindness. Kindness will always win, and people appreciate the gesture."

"I gave my employee some negative feedback because he appeared to be slacking off on the job. Rather than telling him, I thought he was lazy; I said, 'I've noticed that it's been taking longer for you to turn in those reports. What's going on? Is there anything I can do?' I always start by asking questions instead of making accusations. He was very appreciative and told me how he was struggling with motivation. I asked him what would motivate him and we were able to find a solution that worked for both of us."

Everyone has their own style of communication, and feel free to share yours. However, place more emphasis on your communication skill level rather than focussing on your style. Key points to touch on are your non-defensive communication skills, being an active listener, your ability to mirror, validate and empathize. "I love to play to other's strengths. Everyone communicates differently, so I am sure always to send written as well as give verbal communication. Usually, that looks like a small, informal huddle outlining our topic or concern and I follow that up with a quick email detailing the discussion. This way the team hears and reads all expectations. Also, it allows for those who are vocal to share in a group setting as well as allows for the quieter few to ask their questions in the privacy of an email."

"I like to ask questions about a certain situation before communicating instructions. This helps me get a better view of how to communicate with my team and put them in a better position to succeed."

What do you know about corporate governance practices in the metals and mining industry?

"Corporate rules and practices were governed heavily in my last three positions. In all three positions, our Board of Directors created Corporate Governance guidelines that strongly supported the integrity of our operations. I believe Corporate Governance practices always need to be in line with the stockholders' best interests. Corporate Governance should also provide oversight of the company's accounting and financial reporting processes."

The interviewer wants to understand the extent of your experience and knowledge concerning the rules of engagement in the metals and mining industry. Tell me about your education.

"I earned my degree from Stanford and have a Master's in Sustainability Science and Practice. I founded a club on sustainability practices and clean energy. I've always been committed to helping improve the health of others and the planet. I'm proud of my accomplishments there and made a lot of progress towards my career goals."

So I developed my first five year career plan, starting with what out-of-state colleges had graduate programs that were conducive to my goals..."

"I don't have a formal education outside of High School. I have always taken an ownership approach to my work, and have used my experience to learn the necessary skills needed to perform at a high level. I read several books a year geared toward self-improvement, and read technical manuals related to my industry. I am open to gaining further education."

"My previous manager told me that I was spending too much time on the details of a project. I realized that I could be such a perfectionist that I lose track of time and hyper-focus on things that aren't that important. I taught myself to prioritize better so that my results are successful on projects, both large and small."

"I am currently earning a base salary of $78,000 plus a car allowance of $900/month and health benefits. I am looking for a competitive salary in my next position."

"When faced with a complicated problem, I will look to the resources that my current company has provided me. The answer is almost always in there. Minerals and metals are what make nearly everything we have so without this type of mining, many of the products we know and love would not exist."

If you're willing to travel for work or have done so for other employers in the past, share that. If it's not an option, don't say no. If you weren't aware travel was a prerequisite for the position, ask if it is. Tell them you're interested in the position and that you'd be open to discussing it further, but your understanding of constant business travel doesn't fit into your current lifestyle. Ask more questions about the position, be flexible, and be open to negotiation. There may be room for advancement from within, for which a willingness to travel may be a prerequisite.

"In my research on the company and this position, I didn't see that as a prerequisite for the position, though I did take note of the wide variety of locations globally, but mostly in the US. I am definitely open to discussing this further. What are the expectations surrounding this role, and what does it look like?"

"I noted that this position requires me to reside in the territory I am representing, however, I am willing to relocate given the right opportunity."

When have you made a mistake delegating tasks to your team members?

"Earlier in my career I would delegate tasks at random, thinking that everyone had the skills to complete any company-related task. I found that these employees would procrastinate on these tasks if they seemed overwhelming or if they did not understand them. After a bit of time, and some learning, I began to delegate based on personality type and skill-set. This method proved to be much more effective, and I follow this delegation style to this day."

Being able to wisely delegate well-suited tasks according to the individual talents of each member of your team is critical. Talk to the interviewer about a time that you appointed a task ill suited for the team member. Be sure to discuss how you remedied the mistake.

"I am usually cautious when delegating tasks because putting the wrong person in the wrong function can be a dangerous, and expensive, mistake. A few years ago I put an employee on the incorrect piece of machinery, thinking that he was certified in operating that bit of equipment. I am now sure to double check credentials before delegating."

"When I was a foreman, I assumed that everyone on my team had the correct safety training. As we were building a location, it became clear that some members of my team were not properly trained for the situation. I immediately stopped the job and updated them on the correct procedures in order to continue. I make sure to clarify training ahead of a job to catch any problems."

What steps do you take when you have to make an immediate decision and you do not feel you have all the relevant or necessary information?

"I have a pretty routine process I follow to make quick decisions. I weigh the pros and cons and come up with a solution that makes the most sense. Next, I ask the opinion of someone I trust to see what they think. Even though I trust my decision-making ability, I still think it's important to get a second opinion when it comes to situations involving money or if it could make a significant impact on others."

Resourcefulness is integral to leadership. They want to know how resourceful you are and whether you exhibit outside-of-the-box thinking, knowing where to look for the right information when the clock is ticking. Frame yourself as having a propensity to think fast on your feet. Exhibit determination. Demonstrate that you aren't easily discouraged. Meeting deadlines, over performing, learning, and innovating is the aim of the messaging in your example. "I am an organized individual, so I do have a checklist that I follow for all policy related decisions and changes. If I do not have all necessary information, I can usually find it in our company resource database."

Can you tell us about a time you had to support an unpopular company policy?

"At my first job, they laid our entire department off. There was obviously a lot of dissent. There's nothing worse than facing financial insecurity. But the severance packages we all received were more than fair. So I supported the decision as best as I could, shook hands with senior management, and thanked them for their generosity. It was the right thing to do. Not sure if my attitude had anything to do with being one of the few who were hired back on a few months later. Regardless, I consider myself one of the lucky ones."

"All too often, any policy that seems mysterious or vague is by default unpopular, especially when the company neglects to communicate why the policy needed to be implemented. Without fail, I incessantly ask the kinds of questions that give me an understanding of why an unpopular policy is implemented or enforced. So, yes, there have been many occasions I've found myself supporting an unpopular company policy. This is why when on the job, I coach leaders to educate their employees on the whys of such things."

How often do you discuss work with your colleagues in order to think up new systems and styles of working?

"I have a policy with my team that if they have an innovative and helpful idea they can bring it to me at any time. If my team members' idea or system is something that I think could work, we then create a plan together to present it to our head office. This policy has generated some compelling ideas in our office over the past three years including a work-share program and some health and safety initiatives."

"I will always choose to be a team player. If I had a co-worker call in sick, I would take over what I could. The only time I would draw the line would be if I felt I was being taken advantage of for some reason. For example, if they were purposefully being inefficient and expecting me to pick up the slack. For the sake of the company, I am always willing to go above and beyond the expectations."

This will help your interviewer assess your emotional maturity and whether you deal with disputes on your own or involve others. Assuming the worst in another team member and making those known will only serve in divisiveness and hurt the morale of the team. If you haven't tried to communicate with your fellow team members to resolve disputes on your own, this may indicate you don't work well with others. Avoid examples where you went straight to management and handed this problem off for them to solve, distracting them from their work. When a team leader has to drop what they're focused on dealing with inter-personnel disputes, this can hinder their progress and timelines, and also hurt the functionality of the team.

The only time I would draw the line would be if I felt I was being taken advantage of. So if their behavior was hurting the team, I might consult my team leaders and see if they'd want me to do the work for them or not."
