What skill would you most like to improve?

"I know this will come off as cliche, but it's truthful. I want to improve my delegation skills. I know what I want and how I want it done, so it's often easier to do it myself. However, it can inhibit my ability to grow. I cannot take on every step of a project; I need to be able to give the task or a portion of it to another team member, let go of the control and know it will be taken care of. I've spoken with my current manager about it, and we've developed a system where he can call me out on the behavior since I'm often unaware of it. By bringing awareness to it at the moment, I find my propensity to hold onto control has decreased, so I'm certainly moving in the right direction."

My supervisor and coworkers will attest to my fast reflexes when a problem arises, and they would also say that I remain calm under pressure."

The reason for the grade would be that I'm quick to take action and figure out the solution as I go, but sometimes I could benefit from taking a moment to pause and reflect or gather other contributors before taking action. I gave myself room for improvement since I'm certainly not perfect. That said, I believe I generally get the best outcome possible when faced with a challenge."

In your opinion, what makes you the best candidate for this position?

"I am the best candidate for the position because I meet and exceed your job qualifications. I have over seven years of experience working as a healthcare professional with diverse groups and cultures. I am empathetic, compassionate, level-headed, and work well under pressure. I have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to your wonderful organization."

I have done this and set up a Google alert for related keywords in the healthcare industry. I also attend yearly conferences, subscribe to a monthly nursing newsletter, and talk with colleagues about changes in the industry. Do you have any additional recommendations for me?"

Employers expect employees to stay up-to-date in their respective fields, and today's technology makes this reasonably easy! List several ways you receive your industry knowledge and stay on top of trends. "Luckily, I have had good coworkers and supervisors in the past with minimal conflict. If an issue arises with a colleague, I like to nip it in the bud. I ask them to speak in private, address the issue, and come up with a resolution that makes us both happy."

Everyone will have conflicts with a coworker or supervisor in their career. The interviewer wants to see that you work to resolve the dispute and act calmly and professionally. "When we spoke earlier, you mentioned that you urgently sought to improve the level of patient care and compassion at this facility. I want to offer my skills in building patient rapport and help improve the satisfaction of everyone that uses the services of Novant Health. I plan to make a positive impact quickly if you hire me for the position."

The interviewer would like to hear that you have thought about how you can make a positive impact shortly after being hired by Novant Health. Perhaps you want first to meet your team and learn all you can about them and the unit's policies and procedures. "I have worked in healthcare for three years and feel I handle stress very well. My medical training prepared me for the stressors of this job, and I learned coping mechanisms that allow me to work in stressful situations while remaining calm and professional. I also take time on my days off to relax and do activities that bring me peace, so I am ready for the job stressors when I return to work."

"A bit about me - I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I spent the past few months traveling the world with Doctors Without Borders. It was the best experience I could have given myself, as I learned so much from seeing how the rest of the world lives. I returned to the US last month and have been actively looking for new work since I returned. I am eager to get into the routine of a career again."

"I find that it's pretty simple to balance life and work with the right company. It doesn't feel like a chore when I enjoy what I do. I am always sure that when at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and ensure that I regenerate before the work week begins."

As a healthcare professional, keeping a healthy work/life balance is essential to prevent burnout, illness, and injury. I enjoy working with my trauma team and combining our knowledge and experience to provide the best care possible for our patients. I am always willing to learn new methods or approaches to solving problems as they are usually better than the previous method."

"I worked in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a shared waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice weekly, which completely solved our scheduling problem."

Problem-solving and critical thinking are essential skills to possess in the healthcare industry. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving and thinking critically within the workplace. Talk about a time when you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

Healthcare professionals use these skills daily, in some form or another. Think of an example where you discovered a patient's health was worsening because they were given the wrong IV drip dosage or where you implemented a new scheduling program to decrease patients' wait times. When you show you have these skills and have utilized them in the workplace, the interviewer will place you high on the candidate list.

"Recently, I had a patient recovering from anesthesia and should have been waking up. Instead, her vital signs were diminishing, and she was unresponsive. I looked at her IV and discovered she was still receiving anesthesia meds, even though she should have been taken off them after surgery. I quickly stopped the drip, changed out her IV with a bag of Normal Saline, and started giving her a fluid bolus. I called the doctor and anesthesiologist, who quickly came to the patient's room. They gave her some medication to reverse the effects of the narcotics, and her condition improved immensely."

Have you ever been involved in ordering medical supplies, maintaining inventory, or other types of administrative duties?

"I have experience in ordering medical supplies and maintaining inventory. I fully understand that there is an art to being properly organized when it comes to the availability of supplies. I have used various software and programs such as ABC and XYZ for medical ordering and inventory. If Novant Health uses a different system, I am sure I will pick it up quickly."

The interviewer would like to know if you understand what it takes to keep on top of ordering medical supplies and inventory. It is often said that a career in healthcare is a 'thankless job.' How can we keep you motivated and engaged, even on the days when you feel your work goes unnoticed?

"My chosen career was helping people at exactly the point they were least capable of helping themselves. So, I do not expect thanks from my patients. It's not like I don't need positive reinforcement. Everyone does. But I made a point to find it elsewhere instead of expecting it from my patients. Nowadays, I make an effort to expressly thank the people I work with when they do a good job. I focus on being grateful to be allowed to see private, raw, emotional parts of people's lives."

"I am an easily motivated individual, and it does not take much to keep me engaged. I am fully aware that healthcare-related positions can seem thankless. Honestly, the best thanks that I can get is a pat on the back now and then. The majority of my motivation comes from simply helping people."

Why did you pursue a career in the healthcare industry?

"I chose to pursue a career in nursing because my mom and aunt are both nurses. I love caring for others and helping make them comfortable when going through a difficult time in their lives. I grew up hearing the stories of the patients my mom and aunt had helped and even those they could not. Still, I could tell they truly enjoyed their jobs, and I think it's in my blood. I cannot imagine choosing another career path."

My notebook saves me when I'm swamped, but I try to be efficient and put info directly into the (group record/EMR/chart) when I can."

It's professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go, but I have never let my feelings interfere with my work. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story; it's the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to carry those emotions."
