"I'm a glass-half-full person, so I always focus on the positive aspects of change. I think it's rather lazy to look for reasons that change is bad and won't work. "Some changes can be tougher to accept immediately than others. Once I understand the motivation or the goal behind the change, I can easily adapt. I did this last year when my current organization went through a merger. While my day-to-day job remained the same, we had a new reporting structure and new management, which was tough for many people. I was the positive force on my team and helped talk a lot of people off the ledge when they thought things would get worse."

Tell me about a time your integrity was challenged. How did you handle it?

"During college, academic integrity is always challenging for students, faculty, and institutions. During the second year of my program, I learned that some classmates were plagiarizing papers to cut corners and have more free time. This didn't sit well with me. I approached them individually and convinced them to do the right thing and come forward to the professor. I explained that they weren't taking advantage of a real learning opportunity that would help them later in life. They both came forward and ended up thanking me immensely."

Knowing that I was strongly considering applying to your openings here at Northrop Grumman, it seems like the AIA and ICCAIA would be great places to start getting new information from. Are there any others you would recommend?"

Because of the nature of our business, we conduct background checks on employees. This includes criminal background, credit, and education verification checks. Are you willing to comply?

"If I'm fortunate enough to join Northrop Grumman, I'm more than willing to handle all pre-employment requirements in short order upon hire. I have a spotless record, outside of a couple of speeding violations, and don't see these requirements as an issue."

In my experience recruiting in many industries and companies that require complete background checks and education verifications, interviewers will often try to get candidates to discuss their ability to pass any required checks upon hire. They need to disclose that their organization conducts background checks, and in doing so, they give their candidates an opportunity to discuss any blemishes on their records.

Many of our industry competitors have their employees under a non-compete contract. Are you bound by any non-compete contract with your current employer?

"No, I am not currently working under any non-compete agreement. If I'm fortunate enough to be offered this role at Northrop Grumman, I'd be more than happy to sign any non-compete agreement required."

Having recruited in industries where non-compete agreements are commonplace, hiring managers need to be assured that an offer down the road wouldn't be declined due to a current contract a candidate was bound by. Northrop Grumman needs to know you aren't bound by geographical or informational non-compete agreements.

"My grandfather has always inspired me. He is the person who gave me an initial interest in the aerospace field. He is the hardest-working person I know, and he taught me how important it is to read and continually grow. Because of him, I always seek to learn."

Tell me about yourself.

"Well, I come from a long line of family that's worked in the defense and aerospace industry. My grandfather, Redmond Jerr Joyce, who served in WWII, later became an engineer working for Northrup Grumman and there designed the F-14 Tomcat. When he was training pilots how to fly it back in the 1960s in Virginia, he met my father who was in the Navy, and they became friends and my grandfather introduced my father to my mother. So in a way, if it wasn't for Northrup Grumman, I might not have ever been born. He made it into several of Grumman's newsletters from the 70s, Plane News, as well. I still have the issues. Later, my mother worked for Rockwell, and my cousin currently works for Boeing. So, I figured it felt natural to find a position in the defense and aerospace industry and decided to start here, where it all began."
