Accomplishment
1. Tell me about yourself.
What You Need to Know
This question presents you with the opportunity to put your best foot forward by showcasing to your interviewer that this is going to be a good interview for them, and that you are the candidate they are looking for. You are going to accomplish this by simply doing two things. Being yourself and coming prepared. Bring a notebook that contains the notes you've taken when researching their website and everything you've learned and discovered about the position, about Nordstrom, and their history and culture. Have a page dedicated to all the questions you plan to ask throughout the interview, and then some more for the end of the interview. Make sure your notebook has blank pages for taking notes. Bring your resume and cover letter. Be confident, relaxed, friendly, and be yourself.

How to Prep
You'll want to perform exhaustive research on Nordstrom by continually asking questions. Start with your priorities and what's most important to you in finding your next job. Whether it's benefits, hours, salary, anything you can think of, write those down questions down and take every measure to try to answer those questions on your own. Beyond that, if you go in unsure of what questions to ask, just start researching and exploring until you learn something that poses some questions. If they mention their values, define who they are, ask what their values are, and find those answers. Don't wait around to ask your interviewer, rather, try to answer those questions on your own.
Don't limit your research to their website either. Punch your questions into your preferred search engine, try to find Nordstrom's code of conduct and employee handbooks online as well. Leave no stone unturned. When you are done with your research and preparation, you'll know it. If you grow exhausted from all that research and tell yourself you think you've done enough, then you're not done yet, and you won't deliver your best interview. If you ultimately decide it's not worth it to put in all the work, then it might not be the right job for you. Even then, don't worry, we've done a bit of the work for you, so just keep going through this interview set, and you'll find yourself off to a good start.

How to Answer
When answering this question, you want to be yourself, and to tell them who you are. Be personable and professional. Tell them who you are, and why you are here pursuing this opportunity and why it is important to you. Tell them where you've come from professionally and how that equates to this job feeling like a good fit. Then wrap it up with where you feel this opportunity will take you as a professional, and how it aligns with your goals and aspirations.
Don't try to tell them what you think they want to hear. Just determine how your goals are symbiotic with their goals, and tell them that truth. Because the truth is what they want to hear. By identifying with their culture, their brand, their identity and the language they use, you'll get a feel for how you're a great fit for Nordstrom, and how this position with them is a great fit for you. You want to show up as if you've already started onboarding, and are already one of them.

Experienced Example
"Well, I've always been interested in fashion. Both my parents are very fashionable people, and dressed me in style since I was a toddler. I am currently enrolled in college, and was looking for a job to support me through my studies, and I figured why not work somewhere I love. I've been a loyal customer of Nordstrom since I was a preteen. I have always loved how special each stylist made me feel when they tended to my fashion needs. So, when considering a place to work that would make me happy and feel right at home, this job immediately popped in my mind. I'd love to make our customers feel the way I've felt as a customer while shopping here."

Adaptability
2. When have you been asked to perform a function or complete a task in which you had little or no experience in doing?
What You Need to Know
This question will help your interviewer gain a better understanding of your work style and approach to problem solving. In other words, they are curious whether you are self-managed in your work, or if you need constant hand holding. Offer an experience where you were resourceful and took a calculated risk without overstepping your bounds. Show how you willingly step outside of your comfort zone, exemplifying leadership potential. Share the positive outcome, and how you learned, and how your actions benefitted your teams.

Answer Example
"I was asked to train an employee on a new point of sale system that I hardly knew. To prepare, I worked overtime, watching online tutorials so that the new employee's training time was well spent."

Adaptability
3. How many hours do you expect to work per week?
What You Need to Know
Everyone has a different expectation of how many hours they would like to work, and the interviewer is merely learning what your needs and expectations are. Before arriving at your interview, have some hours in mind that will work well with your schedule. Keep your answer to the point as there is no need to go into great detail about your personal life.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Answer Example
"At this point, I am available to work part-time, to work with my University schedule. I can work around 20 hours per week. Once the summer hits, I am available full time."

4. Why do you want a job at Nordstrom?
What You Need to Know
When answering this question, you have to step outside of yourself and consider how your interviewer's goals align with yours. They are looking for qualified candidates who not only have the experience and skills to do this job, but who also share their values, identify with their culture, and would serve well as the face and ambassador of their brands. So if you simply answer by stating that you are looking for a job that is close to home and matches your skills, this won't align with their goals, and they'll hire someone else. Consider what this value proposition communicates, which they've posted on their website in their recruiting efforts: "Exciting and fast-paced, a career at Nordstrom means staying ahead of the trends, moving quickly and being part of something we think is pretty awesome."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 5th, 2023
Answer Example
"I have been an assistant manager in my clothing department for three years. I am ready for advancement in a management role; however, my organization is unable to promote me without a transfer to another city. When I saw your position open for a management role, and in my home city, I was excited. What excited me even more; however, is that you are Nordstrom, where I've been a loyal customer for many years. You have developed a strong sense of trust with your customers, and I genuinely appreciate that."

Career Goals
5. Why do you want a career in fashion?
What You Need to Know
Whether you're applying for a position in retail or technology, prior experience working in the fashion niche holds less relevance than your desire to work with them. When considering what appeals to you about working with Nordstrom, question how it fits into your goals. If you are a frequent customer of Nordstrom and the employee discount appeals to you, communicate this by relaying your enthusiasm as a loyal customer. Nothing reflects your ability to represent their values and culture than already being a member of their tribe. So when doing your homework on Nordstrom, take notes on everything you value and identify with and use this as a starting point to communicate your enthusiasm for being part of their fashion-focused teams, where you're helping others feel good about themselves and the way they dress.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023
Answer Example
"I want a career in fashion because it's a topic that I have a lot of passion for and knowledge in. I like to show people how to dress for their lifestyle and elevate their look without breaking the bank, or being uncomfortable in clothes that aren't the best shape or cut for them."

Career Goals
6. How long do you see yourself working at Nordstrom?
What You Need to Know
It's clear through the statements made in their recruiting efforts on their website that they have no interest in hiring someone who is trying to land any job anywhere. They want to hire those who are interested in working specifically for them. "Nordstrom is a great place to start your career. It's a place where you can learn and grow, and make customers feel good. Whether you are determined to be part of the fashion industry or just interested in seeing if it is the right fit for you, Nordstrom is a great way to explore opportunities with a company rich in history and success thrilling customers." So share you goals, whether you're a student in need of a retail job which you intend to stay in through to graduation, or are interested in the growth opportunities this position presents, or looking for a steady and predictable job that you'd feel comfortable and secure in for years to come.

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
With every interview question, imagine you are sitting in the seat of your interviewer and look at each question through their eyes. Their aims are quite predictable. Interviewing, vetting, hiring and onboarding a new employee is time consuming and expensive. So whomever they choose to bring on board is an investment. So they are ideally aiming to bring someone onboard who will contribute to their employee retention goals and not sow discord, dissent, or contribute to attrition. The onus of responsibility for bringing the right candidate falls squarely on their shoulders, and they have a reputation to protect. The individual they are looking for will pick things up quickly, perform well, embrace their values, get along with the others on their team, and do a good job of representing their company in their interactions with their customers.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I have been seeking a retail environment outside of typical big box store for some time now. Your brand and brand story resonates with me, and I like the fact that you encourage continued education opportunities for your management team as well. For these reasons, I would like to stay at Nordstrom as long as you will have me!"

Career Goals
7. Where do you see yourself at Nordstrom in three years?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewer's ideal candidates are those who have an interest in growing within the company. As they state on their site, "We believe in rewarding outstanding work, promoting from within and building long-term relationships with our employees. Our culture makes all of these things possible. It's fun, supportive, competitive and a great place to grow your career." But whatever that growth looks like is subjective. So when considering your goals and reasons for pursuing this opportunity, think about what you hope to gain, whether it be learning new skills, building up your resume and references, or growing and rising in position within the company. Whatever your aims, it is important to determine how they stand to mutually benefit from hiring you.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023
Answer Example
"Ideally I'd love to make Nordstrom my long-term home. I would like to work my way into an assistant manager position, and then into management. In three years, through hard work and dedication, I am hopeful you'd consider me for a management role."

What You Need to Know

So whether you work in retail or in product development, your interviewer is curious how passionate you are about pursuing a career in their industry, and how you would communicate your passion to their customers. So answer this question by talking about fashion with your interviewer, conveying your enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Communicate in a fashion that would assure them you'd represent their company according to their values and culture.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023

9. How often do you shop at Nordstrom?
What You Need to Know
Whether you are applying for a position in one of their retail locations or at their corporate headquarters in Seattle, regardless of whether you are a regular once a month customer or an occasional once a year one, let them know you don't shop at Nordstrom's as much as you'd like. Before your interview, walk through their store, section to section and floor to floor, to familiarize yourself with what they carry, how they merchandize, and why they do it the way they do. Walking their store and exploring their products should be part of your preparation for the interview. Then when answering the question, point out some items you noticed when shopping in the store last that have caught your eye. In order to serve their customers well, they are counting on you to see things through their customers' eyes.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Any time an interviewer asks how you stay motivated what they are trying to assess is how productive you are and how consistent you can maintain that level of productivity. For some, being in a work environment they find stimulating is motivating. For others, it can be the culture, values, and teammates they find motivating, or the work itself. For example, consider this statement from Nordstrom's website: "Providing memorable customer service and trend-setting fashion for our customers motivates us. On the sales floor and behind the scenes, everyone in our stores works as a team to ensure customers feel good every time they shop with us. It's what we think sets us apart."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023
How to Answer
Evaluate your experience and identify what type of work or type of conditions fostered your productivity in the past. You want to convey that you know yourself well enough to answer this question with conviction. Avoid conveying pay or incentives as a motivator, as this will suggest you are only in it for the money, lack loyalty and are up for the highest bidder. Your goal is to convey, with sincerity, that you would perform well and with consistency in their environment.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 6th, 2023
Answer Example
"I feel motivated by being surrounded by great style and looking great as well. I believe that attitude is everything, and when I am surrounded by stylish people who all have great attitudes, that keeps me going. Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

This could also potentially help them identify whether the position you are applying for is the right fit for you, and perhaps even place you into a job which you'd enjoy more. Yet, showcasing your preference and your adaptability, you'll be setting yourself up as a more ideal candidate. However, if the position you are applying for is the right fit for you right now, and for the foreseeable future, that's fine too.

Leadership
25. What type of manager brings out the best in you?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewer is curious about how well you would work with their leaders. The aim here is to be self-aware. Take some time to reflect on those leaders who you worked well with and who brought out the best in you. This will also give them some insights as to your leadership potential and the type of leadership style you would model your own after, and how closely it aligns with their approach to leadership. On their careers website they detail the types of managers they look for as being "goal-oriented, enthusiastic about the business of fashion and has demonstrated skills in the areas of influencing, collaborating and is committed to driving results and providing an exceptional customer experience."

How to Prep
Justifying your professional worth comes long before your interviewer opens the dialogue up for discussion. Your interviewer will gain glimpses into your professional worth in how well your resume and cover letter are presented, and how consistent and well delivered your interview performance is. Your professional worth is further established through your interview responses in how well prepared you are (your work ethic), how confident you are (your skill level), and how valued you are (how well you supported your teams).
So once this dialogue is opened, the last thing you want to do is close out negotiations by throwing out a definitive number. Try to determine the pay range for the position in advance. Examine the benefits and perks they advertise that they offer, and take into consideration anything that lowers your cost of living. Contrast that to the salary you are currently earning and the benefits you currently receive. Then forecast your earnings for the next year, and how frequently you receive pay increases. Answer as many of these questions on your own.
Then, when your interviewer poses this question, ask them to fill in the blanks (their payroll budget/pay range for education and experience). Once you are able to assemble this clear picture of your financial future with them, place value on what it would mean for your career goals or quality of life to work with them. Once you have all of this information collected, you should be able to share how what they are offering compares to what you expect to earn over the next year in your current job and where their offerings fall short. Once there, you can suggest a reasonable number that is within their payroll budget to make it worth your while to come on board. But never play hard ball or convey that you only value this job for the money. You want to come across as excited about the prospects of a career at Nordstrom.

"I've taken a close look at the benefits you offer for this position, and they are generous and similar to my current benefits package, which is ideal, as I have little interest in giving that up. I noticed your salary range, depending on education and experience. I am currently earning $$, and my projected income for the year would be $$+. And I feel my education and experience position me well for this opportunity. I am curious when you next performance review will be, and if filling this position qualifies it for that performance review and a raise. I'd be interested in reaching my projected income sooner rather than later."

Teamwork
27. Do you feel more accomplished when working alone or as part of a group?
What You Need to Know
This question will help your interviewer gain a better sense of your personality. Specifically, whether you are an introvert, and ambivert, or an extrovert. This will help them better identify the type of tasks you might specifically excel at. Those who are introverted typically thrive on more solitary analytical tasks, allowing them to recharge their battery, whereas an extrovert typically recharges in more social and collaborative settings. Although most people may lean one way or another, rarely does a person fall under one extreme. Most people are different degrees of ambivert. So be honest and sincere, while maintaining an awareness of how Nordstrom is looking for candidates who will support and contribute to the team. Case in point; another of Nordstrom's core values is, "HERE TO WIN: We're committed to delivering results, both today and tomorrow. We win as a team by supporting and challenging one another to be better every day."

"I am more on the extrovert side of being an ambivert. Having said that, I do enjoy those quiet and reflective moments when they arise as well. But I am in it for the team. So whatever task is required, I am up for it."

Teamwork
28. How do you get along with others at work?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer wants to gauge what the dynamics of your relationships look like in the workplace. Share some of the relationships you've built and maintained with past coworkers, and your current job or previous ones. One of Nordstrom's core values is "WE EXTEND OURSELVES: We treat each other with respect and kindness. We do the small things that make a big difference. We create a welcoming environment, helping people feel connected, valued and part of one community."

How to Answer
How you answer this question will enable your interviewer to envision how well you would fit in with and work with their current teams. Despite how nervous a candidate may potentially be, an interviewer is hyperaware to the fact that the person they are interviewing is putting on their best performance. How you answer will help your interviewer assess how well you would perform as a team player once hired. So be mindful that those teammates whom you have yet to meet haven't had a chance to interview you yet, and their trust must be earned as well. So share your approach to building relationships and earning the trust of those who were there before you. Showcase how the performance you are giving now is what they can expect from you once hired.

Answer Example
"I tend to get along well with my coworkers, and if occasionally something comes up, I am prompt and specific in my non-defensive communication, so it doesn't get out of hand nor create a divisive work environment. I'm a supportive team player. More than anything, I want always to be positive and respectful towards those with whom I work."

Teamwork
29. What does teamwork look like to you?
What You Need to Know
Nordstrom defines their brand of teamwork by coming together, be united in vision, and supporting each other and treating each other well. Without such an environment, it would be impossible to deliver a quality customer experience. As Erik Nordstrom put it, "It was very evident to me early on that people with different backgrounds and talents can come together and be better than any of us individually. You get the crew together every morning and talk about how we are going to take care of customers today and the curtain goes up and you've got to perform. We have been very explicit and absolutely believe that you can't create a place where you treat customers well if you don't first treat each other well. We have to be a great place to work."

How to Answer
A skilled interviewer aims to get to know you as a candidate, as a person, and wants to know the truth about who you are to determine your fit for the role. So part of your preparation should be putting equal measure into researching yourself, determining how you fit their mold, and how your approach to your work aligns with theirs. This will help you answer each of their questions with sincerely as opposed to seeming like you are trying to tell them what you think they want to hear in order to land the job. So, to give your best interview performance, do what you can to find your truth to each of their questions.

Answer Example
"When everyone looks forward to coming to work for a repeat of that same rewarding camaraderie each member experienced the day before. Team work looks like high-fives, pats on the back, being supportive of each other, and encouraging each other's efforts. All for one and one for all."

Technical
30. How do you feel about wearing white shoes after labor day?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This is a simple and fun question aimed to assess how fashion focussed you are, and how you would go about serving and navigating the varying perspectives of your customers. Where some feel passionate about not wearing white shoes after labor day, others may be more relaxed. There are many theories for the origination of this rule, from the 1950s for the purposes of identifying those lower of class, to serving more practical purposes, such as reflecting light to cool one's feet in the warmer months. While some fashion designers have recently tried to relax this rule for more modern times, the key here is how you would convey your opinion in a diplomatic fashion, while navigating the opinions of your customers. So have fun with this question, yet communicate clearly and with diplomacy.

Experienced Example
"Personally, the only white shoes I have are converse. However, I wouldn't wear them after labor day. I am traditional when it comes to dressing according to the seasons. I would only match a brown belt with brown shoes and match those according to the bag I was wearing. Unless I am wearing jeans, I wouldn't match blue on blue, but would pair a blue with an earth tone. But, I would study the look and style of my customer first, before making any recommendation, and gently establish their goals before offering my opinion."
