How was your performance measured, in your most recent role?

"In my previous role as a content marketer for a cable company, I was measured by a range of social media analytics, client feedback, overall client satisfaction, as well as project churn rate. My KPI's were always sitting about 20% above expectations."

The interviewer would like to understand better the key performance indicators you needed to meet in a more recent role, and how precisely those KPI's were measured. A good interviewer will recognize that the top candidates always understand how their performance is measured, and where they landed in regards to their performance against others in a similar role. It is a red flag to an interviewer if the interviewee responds with 'I don't know,' or worse yet - 'My company didn't measure my performance in any way.' Every company pays attention to employee performance metrics; it's just that some ways are more evident than others. Some ways that your employer might measure your performance: - The rate of absence, late days, and sick days - Setting specific objectives for you, related to a task - Amount of defective work submitted, or amount of work returned - Human Capital ROI - Error counting - Timed tasks - Employee retention rates (for managers) - Revenue Per Employee or Profit per FTE (Full Time Equivalent) - The willingness of clients to recommend you or your work - Feedback provided by coworkers and management - Number of sales - Scheduling errors - Safety days - First- call resolution or call quality and handling (primarily for call-center environments) - Quality of contacts generated

"We had online customer surveys in my most recent role. Another KPI was the number of services upsold per transaction. I was consistently in the top 10 out of 100 for our region."

Do you have any near impossible goals set for yourself? Tell me about one of them.

"I like to dream big and would say that my biggest goal at the moment is to enter and win my first bodybuilding competition. I realize that winning in unlikely; however, I love the idea of putting that much dedication into my health and bettering myself. I have already hired a personal trainer who will help me get there. As you can see, I am not afraid to take steps towards the seemingly impossible. I plan to be your highest producing sales professional in the next 30 days and will bring the same dedication to you as I bring to my personal goals."

Part of the fun that life brings is that we can daydream about crazy goals that we want to achieve. Everyone has a wild dream some sort. Think about goals that you have set that you know are a bit out-there. You can have some fun with this answer to make yourself memorable; however, if possible, bring your answer back around and relate it to the position for which you are interviewing. Some near impossible goals may be: - To run an ultra-marathon in another country - To win a world record of some sort - To train yourself to run a sub-6-minute mile - To enter and win a bodybuilding competition - To complete five Masters' degrees before you retire - To travel the entire world - To go on, and win the show Survivor - To create zero waste for one year - To go to space - To become a millionaire Many of these examples, as you can see, are goals that you can likely achieve with some serious dedication, drive, and a solid plan. Show the interviewer that you believe in yourself and can create a strategy to get you there. Now you have set the stage to bring in a lofty work-related goal.

"This goal may seem impossible now, but I know deep down it is not entirely impossible. I have a dream of being a regular contributor to Forbes. I know that my programming knowledge is vast, and my outlook is a refreshing one that people will enjoy taking in. Being noticed in this space can be challenging; however, I am looking into more networking events that will introduce me to the right people. I have also taken a variety of writing courses to improve the quality of my articles. Once I reach this goal, it will be great exposure for MuleSoft as well! You will have a Forbes writer on staff!"

"Learn every new technology and be an expert. I have been in the life science industry and constantly come across new COTS applications and feel like I should learn every new application like Veeva, Veeva Vault, CTMS, Trackwise, Labvantage, Empower, Salesforce, ETL DB2, .net, POMS, etc. I even try to do the same in my free time, understanding how they are built and coding language behind the screens."

How can we motivate you on the job?

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a team leaderboard, and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

Every employer should know how each staff member is best motivated. Talk to the interviewer about the variety of ways in which you are best motivated on the job. When have you shown great integrity at work?

"I show integrity every day at work by being my true self. The 'me' that you see at work is the 'me' that my family and friends get. I am an honest and genuine person."

The interviewer would like to know about a time when you have shown high levels of integrity on the job. Integrity is best displayed through honesty and consistent moral values. Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you show your integrity in the workplace.

"Integrity is fundamental to me. I was once given credit for a report that I did not create. I did present the report, but one of my staff members had put it together for me. I made sure to show thanks for the compliment and alert everyone to its creator. I took my subordinate out to lunch later for making me look good."

Are you applying for other jobs?

"I recently started my search and had found some interesting job postings related to my accounting degree; however, your role is the position I am most enthusiastic about."

The interviewer is looking for answers to a few points when asking this question. 1. The company wants to know what kind of timeline is present before you are scooped up by another organization. 2. They want to know how discerning you are with your job applications. 3. They want to know the types of roles that interest you. 4. They want to hear that they are your top choice. You can certainly discuss your search but avoid giving too many details. Give the interviewer enough to satisfy the question without revealing your entire search. Some mystery is okay here.

"I am applying to other roles. It is important to me that I gain employment as soon as possible; however, I am using discernment when it comes to the interviews that I am accepting. I am very pleased with the opportunity to be here today and look forward to learning more about your position."

Who is the smartest person you know? Explain your answer.

"To me, the smartest person I know is the author, Brene Brown. She has such unique concepts, and I have never seen anyone be able to dissect and analyze statistics quite like her. She's brilliant. Who do you feel is the smartest person you know?"

You can have fun with this question and choose a family member, friend, mentor, author, or celebrity. Just be sure that you can back your answer! If you can relate your response to an influencer in your industry, that's the best way to approach this question. A great way to keep this conversation going would be to ask the interviewer the same matter in the end.

"I gain much of my tech influence from Neil Patel. He was making a splash in the entrepreneurial and tech space before he even hit 30 and President Obama even recognized his work. I admire his ability to take chances at a young age and apply that same type of drive in my career."

What questions do you have for me?

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What is top of mind when it comes to filling this role? Also, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the queries you have are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of items you could have found the answers for from merely watching a video on MuleSoft's website!Here are some sample questions: - When would you like to have this position filled? - How long has this role been vacant? - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role? - What is your favorite part about working for MuleSoft? - What is MuleSoft's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months? - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you? - What do you see as the most significant change in this industry over the past three years? - Is there any reason why you would not hire me?

"I appreciate you opening the floor for questions. I am wondering what your timeline is for a decision on this opening? Also, what was the biggest struggle the last software engineer encountered in this role?"

MuleSoft hires team players. Give me an example of a time when you went above and beyond.

"I often go above and beyond expectations. Most recently, I agreed to cover for a co-worker who was on short-term medical leave. I worked 10 hour days for two weeks so that our work did not suffer any setbacks."

The interviewer would like to know about your willingness to go over and above for your employer, without being prompted to do so. Display to the interviewer that you can do more than just the bare minimum. Show that you can react appropriately when you see that your employer has a need that goes beyond your usual day-to-day expectations.

"In my previous role, I recognized that our team needed a training program to bring others in at a quicker rate. I took the initiative to create the training program, playbook and schedule, incorporating all the work we did in a way that people could easily replicate. The team loved having it, and more so, enjoyed having others, fully trained, join us quickly."

Tell me about the most interesting project you have worked on this year and the biggest thing you learned from it.

"In my previous role we were working on a variety of projects with fingerprint recognition software. One of the most interesting projects was a fingerprint-based ATM system. It was a test project for a large banking institution. In addition to learning a great deal about fingerprint recognition, I was also able to learn a lot about the critical relationship between software and security."

The interviewers at MuleSoft would like to know where your interest piques so they can potentially place you in an area that best suits your strengths and interests. Discuss with the interviewer one of your recent projects that particularly piqued your interest. Did it stretch you professionally? What was the biggest takeaway for you from that particular project?

"I find the majority of the projects that I have been working on this past year to be very interesting. If I had to choose one, I would choose the work I saw in a merchant payment application. Since I am still in my internship, I didn't have any major contributions; however, I learned a lot about on-demand apps and building a friendly user interface."

When entering a new job, describe how you build relationships with your new coworkers and supervisors.

"I understand that some relationships come quickly and others take time to nurture. When starting a new job all that I can do is be my true self and let my personality, integrity, and reliability speak for itself."

The interviewer would like to know how you plan to start relationships with your new co-workers. Due to a wide variety of personalities, coworker connections can take time to form. How do you ensure that you have a strong line of communication with your co-workers and supervisors, right from the start? Here are some ideas for getting started on the right foot: - Be willing to accept feedback and help - Offer to join a committee or volunteer assistance in some way - Do not have an air of entitlement or act as though you know the ins and outs immediately - Avoid all company gossip, at all cost - Be thankful for the equipment that you have. Don't complain about your used computer or your slow dial out line! - Be early on your first day (and every day after that!) - Come dressed appropriately

"I like to ask my new colleagues for their best software related tip, and also what they are currently working on. Tech types like to bounce ideas off of others which makes these two questions a very effective way to get to know others in the industry."

What is the hardest decision you have had to make recently?

"The hardest decision I made recently was related to budget cuts. We had to eliminate some additional expenses but narrowing down which ones to cut was more challenging than I initially thought. I presented two options to my boss, and he is currently weighing the options I brought to him."

The example you use in this answer will help the interviewer to determine the level of responsibility you have in your current position. For instance, if your hardest decision is what to have for lunch, you likely aren't in a place to be the leader of 15 incumbents. Discuss some of the weightier responsibilities and decisions assigned to you, in your current or most recent role.

"I was recently asked by the owner of my agency to fire a client. It was a challenging situation because I do not like this type of conflict; however, it needed to happen. The client was not cooperating with the process needed to deliver our best product, and within their demanding timeline."

Which career development goals have you set for yourself this year?

"This year I have set the goal to read one new book per month, all related to leadership, goal setting, maximizing efficiency and other business-related topics. I am just a few months in and can already see how this infusion of knowledge is boosting my work performance."

The interviewer would like to know that you are motivated to better yourself personally, and professionally. "The career development goal that I have set for myself this year is to learn Python. I believe this programming language will be even more widely used in the next few years."

Tell me about a time when you worked with a person who did things very differently than you. How did you collaborate?

"My fellow administrator and I approach deadlines differently, and that is okay. I prefer mapping out the situation and putting myself on a timeline whereas she prefers to jump right into the task. We have found a good balance between our two working styles after discussing our differences. On our last project, we agreed to split the tasks up and come together at the end of each day to put the pieces together. We have also agreed to keep the lines of communication open throughout the day. As different as we are from each other, we both agree that so long as we get to the end goal together, it doesn't always matter how we got there."

The interviewer wants to understand if you are a team player. These situations seem to happen often in the workplace since everyone's work style is a bit unique. Maybe you are organized, and you had to work with someone who is not organized. Perhaps you are a 'big picture' thinker, and you had to work with someone who micromanaged the details. Maybe you are a technology whiz, and you had to work with someone who likes to do things with paper and pen. Start by discussing the project you were working on and the ways your work styles differed from each other. Explain how you came to a mutual consensus on how to conquer the project. Show the interviewer that you are capable of giving merit to different working styles, even if they do not match your own.

"I recently worked with a peer that had a very different work style regarding how they organized and prioritized work. I approach work by scheduling meetings in advance and having a list of items to review to make the most of that time together. My peer was rarely prepared for the sessions, spent a great deal of time talking about personal items and operated in reaction mode to many situations. I took it upon myself to speak to that person about our different styles and come to an agreement on how we could work best together. I am open to working with all types of people and welcome challenges with a smile!"

How do you react to an increase in your workload?

"I fully understand that my workload will increase from time to time and I easily accept that. I prefer it when times are busy, so I do not mind an increase in workload now and then."

Workloads will increase and decrease as the market demands. The interviewer would like to know how you adapt when the work starts to pile up. Show that you are willing to work faster, put in overtime, or take work home when needed. You will also want to express your time-management abilities.

"My workload increases as new clients are acquired. It's the ebb and flow of the tech industry. When my work is piling up, I will ask for assistance from another team member who has a lighter workload. I offer the same assistance to my coworkers when they have a heavy desk as well."

How do you prevent stress from your personal life entering your professional life?

"When I have a healthy balance in my personal life and responsibilities, I am much better at handling work-related stress. I keep very organized and draw boundaries well. Rest assured, I do not bring my personal life to work with me."

One of the most significant problems between employees and employer is that outside influences, and stressors, begin to affect work performance and outcomes. Assure the interviewer that you understand the importance of keeping your cool, and your focus, in the workplace. Discuss the action that you take to ensure professionalism is present at all times.

"Responsibilities management is the key for me when it comes to preventing stress from creeping into areas where it should not. I use a planning app to track my assignments at work, and my responsibilities at home. I promise to myself that I will not postpone an obligation or an assignment. This method has always worked very well for me."

At MuleSoft we prefer to hire those with an education in computer science or another related field. Walk me through your post-secondary education and training.

"I completed my Bachelor of Applied Technology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. During that time I specialized in Data Management and Analysis. I graduated with a 3.99 GPA, one of the top in my class."

The interviewer will likely have an idea of your education background from your resume. What they are asking is for you to take a few minutes to bring the experience to life for them! What was your major? Did you receive any special academic recognition? Discuss the strengths gained during your post-secondary training and how those skills will be used in your new position with MuleSoft.

"I recently completed my Diploma in Information Technology. I also have a great deal of on the job training and certifications, all listed on my resume. One of the biggest take-away's from my post-secondary experience was learning how to manage my time while working on multiple projects successfully. I perfected my multi-tasking skills and look forward to bringing those to work for MuleSoft."

How do you feel about performance incentives?

"I think performance incentives are important for driving people to get results. For me, as a manager, I feel incentives give me some skin in the game and get my team engaged in making an impact on the company's desired results."

The interviewer would like to know if you are the type of employee to be motivated by financial incentives or rewards in the workplace. If you are not incentive-driven, you can clarify for the interviewer the other ideas in which you are best motivated. Discuss any performance incentives you may have earned in the past.

"I love performance incentives! In my current role, we have a few contents per year, primarily based on financial goals and project results. So far, I have one a free day off, and coffee from Starbucks for a week! What types of incentives do you have for fun, here at MuleSoft?"

We want to hire people at MuleSoft who have the desire to lead others. How many people did you supervise at your last position?

"Currently, I am supervising 12 employees with an overall portfolio responsibility of $24MM. In my role, before this one, I managed 23 employees but with a smaller portfolio of $6MM. I can handle a large range of employees."

Discuss with the interviewer your level of responsibility in your current position. If you have managed larger teams than you currently are, you can also discuss that particular role from your work history.

"Although I did not officially supervise anyone in my most recent position, I always had my eye out for opportunities to lead or mentor the more junior staff."

How do you define success?

"I define success by my ability to reach the goals that are set out for me. On a personal level, the things I wish to achieve in my life. On a work level, the targets that are set out for me as well as the professional development that I seek."

What does success mean to you? Tell the interviewer how you see success and be sure to tie your answer into the success that you plan to bring to this particular position, should you be offered the role.

"I consider a project a success only when I have produced work that I can be proud of."

Talking about your most significant accomplishment will give the interviewer a firm idea of where you place your values. It will also show the interviewer more about your personality, how you like to be motivated, and how to coach you in the future. It is okay to brag a little bit when answering this question. Show that you are proud of yourself and your career accomplishments!

"My greatest work-related accomplishment was the management promotion I received at SnapLogic after just one year. I worked very hard for that promotion and was so happy when my work and dedication was rewarded. It kick-started my career."

I would like to have a full understanding of your experience and portfolio. What types of industries have your previous projects been involved in?

"I have experience in a wide range of industries including healthcare, automotive, and education. Most notably, I have worked with a client list similar to yours including BMW, Pepsi, and Telus."

MuleSoft clients include: - Verizon - Coca-Cola - GE - AT&T - Audi -Cisco These are to name a few. As you can see, MuleSoft's clients span a wide variety of industries. The software and technology industry is all-encompassing, and it is essential for the interviewer to have a full understanding of the sectors and types of projects in which you bring experience. Be sure to highlight any projects or clients mainly related to MuleSoft as that may pique the interviewer's interest!

"A great alternative to explaining your projects is to bring a substantial portfolio with you. "I wanted to show you a full range of my experience, so I have brought you a digital portfolio of my work. Would you like to take a look?"

We consider research to be the backbone of what we do at MuleSoft. Do you think it's important to conduct research before beginning a project or would you rather jump right in?

"I agree that research is the backbone of a strong project. Without it, important details are missed and much time is wasted. I like to research before starting a project so that I can lay out a plan and understand the potential hurdles as well."

Talk to the interviewer about your work habits and the way in which you prefer to approach a new project. If you have a sense of how MuleSoft prefers to approach their work you should discuss that method. For instance, if the interviewer tells you that they prefer extensive research before beginning a project, that is your queue to talk about your excellent research skills.

"Although there are some instances where jumping right it may be required, I always prefer to research before I being a project. Rest assured; I would always follow your preferred methods, should I be hired."

"I would like to have a complete understanding of what is ROI for businesses and what they are gaining out of it. I try to get a complete picture, and then I jump into it."

At MuleSoft we take privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Are you willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, if hired?

"I have signed non-disclosure agreements in the past; although I am not currently under one. I see the importance of agreements such as this and am most willing to comply."

Signing a non-disclosure agreement is quite common in the software and technology industry. If hired, you will likely become privy to trade secrets, pending patents, and other innovative projects that must remain confidential. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to sign an agreement. If you are currently under non-disclosure or non-compete agreement with your present employer, now is the time to discuss that.

"I am happy to review any privacy and confidentiality agreements that you have."

"When I was preparing for this interview I noticed that MuleSoft had been recognized as a top employer multiple times. In addition to this, your products are effective that it launched an acquisition with SalesForce. I believe you are a stand out in the cloud integration space, and I look forward to learning everything I can here."

"I think that the best way to stay ahead of competitors is to keep your products as simple as possible while remaining innovative. People want simple, easy products, which they can understand. What I've seen from competitors lately is that they overcomplicate their products. I offer clean and consistent work that your clients will appreciate."

"I will stay one step ahead by tuning myself to the latest technology and often bring innovative ideas to the table to challenge myself and the team. I feel we can further mature MuleSoft products by providing a deep drill-down of data metrics collected via the platform."
