Mountain Warehouse Interview Questions

    1.

  1. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
    • Life at Mountain Warehouse is fast-paced and ever-changing -- and this kind of environment can make some employees feel flustered or stressed out. The interviewer wants to get a feel for how you respond to the unexpected, so talk to them about how you would handle a situation that threatened to make you late for work.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work in case something comes up -- that way, I'm not stressed out if something happens. The extra time I build into getting to work will give me time to contact my manager if I get delayed; and if nothing else, it never hurts to arrive early for work!"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm very even-tempered, so I don't panic when something unexpected happens on my way to work. If I think I'm going to be delayed, I'll immediately call my manager and let her know so that she can be prepared to cover my area of the store until I can make it into work -- but these are really rare situations."

    2.

  1. How can Mountain Warehouse motivate you on the job?
    • Every employer should know how each staff member is best motivated. Talk to the interviewer about the variety of ways in which you find motivation on the job.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm a competitive person by nature, so I'm most motivated by working with coworkers who are really engaged and excited about their work because I think that engaged employees work the hardest. I never want to be the weakest link on a team, so if everyone is working hard, I'll be motivated to keep up."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a leaderboard and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

    3.

  1. At Mountain Warehouse we firmly believe in grooming our employees into management roles as they show potential. Are you interested in potential leadership roles with us?
    • We're always looking for passionate, innovative salespeople who like to make things happen to join our team at Mountain Warehouse -- and we work hard to retain our top talent. Talk to the interviewer about any interest you have in leadership possibilities in the future.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm looking to begin a long career with Mountain Warehouse and would love the opportunity to earn a place in the management and leadership structure in the future."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have been in an unofficial leadership role for the past three years of my career. I believe that a management role with Mountain Warehouse would be a great next step in my career."

    4.

  1. Personality fit is important to us at Mountain Warehouse. How would you describe your personality?
    • We want our sales associates to feel welcome at work -- that's why we encourage them to be themselves and bring their unique personalities to the job. Describe how your unique personality would be well-suited for this team.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm a really eager and enthusiastic worker -- it really doesn't matter what task I'm working on; if I'm in the right environment, that means I'm having fun and enjoying the work. I'm definitely a focused, efficient worker, but that doesn't stop me from having fun while I'm on the job. I look for opportunities to bring light into other people's days."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm a major extrovert and come to life when I'm around a lot of people, and I especially love talking to strangers. There's something really exciting about getting to know someone new, even if it's just for a five-minute conversation with a customer. That's why I love retail so much: every day is different and exciting because there are always new people to interact with."

    5.

  1. Describe to me your ideal employer.
    • There's a lot to love about a job with Mountain Warehouse, and we're doing our best to make sure that our employees are happy and excited about their work here. Talk to the interviewer about what you think makes a great employer.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"It's important to me to work for a company that does its part to protect the environment. I was really glad to read about Mountain Warehouse's Recycle More program -- that's the exact kind of thing I love to see when I'm scoping out a new potential employer."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"My ideal employer is one that brings charisma and passion to their work. I work best with organizations who have a penchant for learning and promote their employees based on performance."

    6.

  1. In our retail stores we take pride in keeping our products organized and our sales floor clean. Are you an orderly and meticulous person?
    • At Mountain Warehouse, we keep our merchandise organized and all store areas clean so that our customers can truly enjoy their shopping experience without the distraction of dirty floors, dusty products, and disorganized departments. Talk to the interviewer about your experience cleaning and organizing your workplace.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am a very organized person -- I even have a bit of a habit of organizing merchandise when I'm at the supermarket or out running errands. You can rest assured that I would keep my workspace extremely tidy."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I don't mind cleaning tasks at all -- in fact, I kind of like to dust, vacuum, and mop at the end of the night. My current manager is always thanking me for volunteering to take on cleaning duties that my coworkers don't want to do, like taking out the trash and scrubbing the bathroom."

    7.

  1. Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a co-worker?
    • Retail and customer service based roles will often require diplomacy when it comes to working with the public. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle an aggressive customer.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"If I had a customer who was being aggressive and disrespectful, I would calmly but firmly ask them to calm down. If security needed to be called, I would do so. Everyone needs to remain respectful, and I would not hesitate to ask a customer to offer that respect, in return."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Most places that I have worked have procedures in place for these kinds of scenarios, and I am happy to follow the procedures put in place by Mountain Warehouse."

    8.

  1. We need reliable people on our team at Mountain Warehouse. How many days were you absent from work last year?
    • A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

    9.

  1. What outdoor activities do you most enjoy?
    • As one of the largest outdoor retailers in the world, Mountain Warehouse is looking for passionate outdoor explorers to join our retail teams. Talk to the interviewer about what kinds of outdoor activities you enjoy.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I can't pick just one favorite way to be outside -- I enjoy it all! Lately, I've been going out on the river with big groups of friends for kayaking and paddle boarding trips, and we're having a blast. I'm really looking forward to winter so I can finally get back out on the slopes, and I'm hoping to try out backcountry skiing for the first time."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Hiking is my first love. There's something so serene and peaceful about being out in the woods or getting to the crest or peak. I love that feeling of accomplishment. I've recently started trying my hand at rock-climbing as well."

    10.

  1. How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?
    • Our sales force is the foundation of our success at Mountain Warehouse, and we do our best to retain top talent by recognizing and rewarding success. Talk to the interviewer about some of the ways you appreciate being recognized for your accomplishments.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I always think it's fun to have some kind of store celebration when we accomplish something big -- retail is so much about teamwork, so I know that any of my accomplishments couldn't have been completed without my team, and I would want everyone to be involved in the recognition. Having something small and celebratory, like a treat in the breakroom that everyone can enjoy, would be a fun way to celebrate an accomplishment!"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"As a sales professional, I am driven by a challenge with a financial perk. Sales contests, for example, are a great way to motivate me."

    11.

  1. How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?
    • Strong communication skills are key in a retail role, but miscommunication still happens from time to time. Talk to the interviewer about how you approach a situation where miscommunication has happened between you and a manager or supervisor. What did you learn from that situation?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their style of communication and emulate it. Sometimes you have to relate to others in their style to be understood."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

    12.

  1. Do you have reliable transportation?
    • Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

    13.

  1. In regards to the products we carry at Mountain Warehouse, what would be your area of expertise?
    • From swimming to skiing and everything in between, Mountain Warehouse has everything our customers need to love the time they spend outdoors. Do you have a specific area of expertise in regards to the kinds of products we sell? Is there any area of the store that you're most interested in working in?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I love everything outdoors, so I wouldn't say I have one specific area of interest -- I would be happy serving customers in any area! I spend the majority of my outdoor time cycling, so I do have a bit more knowledge about those products and would be excited to get customers started on their own cycling adventures."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I've been practicing yoga for about twelve years, so I know a lot about the best products and apparel for serious yoga practitioners. I'm certainly not an expert, but I do think I would be able to add a lot of value and deep product knowledge to that area of the store -- plus, I love talking to people about yoga, so it would be fun to encourage customers to try new things!"

    14.

  1. You will be responsible for a large amount of cash and valuable merchandise at Mountain Warehouse. What would your most recent employer say about your character and honesty?
    • At Mountain Warehouse, we expect our employees to embody the values of respect and integrity, and it goes without saying that we expect to be able to trust our employees to treat the cash and valuable merchandise with respect. Talk to the interviewer about how you display integrity and honesty at work.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I've worked in luxury retail environments in the past, so I'm familiar and comfortable with the sale of products with a high price point. My integrity and honesty have never been questioned at work -- in fact, my most recent manager told me that she found me to be an authentic, respectful person and that she would hire me again if I ever wanted to return to the company."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"My most recent employer and all others would say that I have strong character and always choose honesty first. I have solid references who will attest to that as well."

    15.

  1. What do you hope to learn from this job at Mountain Warehouse?
    • One of the great things about working for Mountain Warehouse is that there are always new things to learn. From communication and sales skills, to managerial and leadership opportunities, to discovering new ways to love the outdoors -- we hope that every Mountain Warehouse employee finds ways to learn something new every day. Talk to the interviewer about what you hope to learn during your time at Mountain Warehouse.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm hoping to gain some knowledge about outdoor activities that I haven't tried out yet, like back-country skiing and mountain biking. I love being outdoors with friends, so I'm also hoping to build relationships with my coworkers who may want to go on outdoor excursions together, try new things, and then be even more prepared to serve our customers together."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I looked at a lot of job postings and had interviewed some very carefully selected places, but you are by far my front-runner. I want to learn not only the fundamentals of sales but also become comfortable with both sides of the business. I appreciate that you want me to start with the basics of the inside sales before moving into outside sales."
