"I handle stress well on the job and when you call my references, they will attest to this fact. When I am under pressure on the job, I focus on the task at hand, doing my best to keep from being distracted. This means that when engrossed with a task, I stay away from email until the work is complete. Staying on deadline is helpful, and I will delegate when necessary to alleviate some stress."

Life at Microsoft can entail a very fast-paced environment due to the quick pace when new and innovative products are put to market. If a team member wasn't doing the necessary work or giving the necessary information, as a leader, I would first approach them directly in a one-on-one situation to reset my expectations for them as part of the project. I wouldn't place blame. I would listen to them and absorb what they were saying to me. Ultimately I would stay positive. I'd stress just how critical their involvement was to the team and that our direction goes as the people driving it goes, and if they lacked support in some way, then we would resolve that issue."

"My software development team was not getting along a few years ago, so I reached out to an external team-building consulting service. With their help, we organized a day full of development exercises that were meant to draw our team closer to each other by developing a sense of trust and camaraderie. This experience was incredibly rewarding because I saw relationships and bonds quickly form. I had a plan in place for keeping the momentum over time, which has also worked well to this day. Looking back, trust and communication were huge issues on this team and I learned that these two things can be fostered with a little effort."

How do you handle critique, constraints, and new information in the work that you do?

"A couple of years ago, I worked with my VP of Sales and our Marketing Director to craft a strategic national roll-out. Two months later, after working on the strategy each week as a collaborative team, I was informed that we were putting a pause on the project until further notice. The executives thought the company wasn't ready for such big clients yet, so instead, I had to scale the national roll-out back to be a local market strategy. After the initial sting and frustration of pulling out of the project, I was able to use that same framework to plan local market roll-outs in several major cities effectively. It proved to be a good learning experience overall for me. If offered this position at Microsoft, you would be getting an employee who can roll with the punches and is open to feedback at all times. It's how I continue to learn and grow."

She also addressed how critical it is that we begin to see differences as a tool for innovation rather than a hindrance. Having never had formal unconscious bias training, I would look forward to taking part as an employee with Microsoft."

Unconscious bias has certainly been a hot topic in the workplace in recent years. By proposing this question, your interviewer would like to see that you have an idea of the importance that understanding unconscious bias plays in the workplace. "I am familiar with a handful of Microsoft products outside of the typical Office Suite. The products which I use most include the Xbox games Minecraft and Halo. I have been playing Halo since my late teens, so it was likely my first real introduction to Microsoft products. In my career, I use Azure daily and I have a genuine appreciation for the solutions it brings to my work."

Staying physically active helps me manage my stress so I can have the energy to keep up with the hustle and bustle of everyday work life!"

I follow Satya Nadella, your CEO, on Twitter as well as numerous other thought leaders on the Microsoft executive team."

"Exposure to cross-functional teamwork in my current position is widespread. I believe that when expectations are communicated clearly from the beginning, a cross-functional team project can be very successful. I go into these types of projects with an understanding that everyone has their strengths and limitations based on their expertise and job function. When I collaborate with people that I don't usually collaborate with on the job, I quickly look to build trust with my ability to do what I say and say what I do at all times."

Prior to your interview with Microsoft, it is important that you understand that you will be working closely with teams from other departments within the organization. What role do you feel comfortable taking in a team-based environment?

"I am usually the ideas person in a team-based environment. In my current position, I am not the most persuasive, but I am highly creative. This skill means that I am great at creating a plan of action but am most comfortable passing the final client-facing tasks to our more extroverted team members. I also pride myself on being the voice of reason in a team environment and I never hesitate to use my pacifying skills when conflicts and emotions run high."

In asking this question, your interviewer truly wants to understand the role that you naturally take on in a team-based environment. If you tend to take the lead, you can certainly let that interviewer know that. Just be sure to avoid sounding overbearing. If you usually like to generate new ideas and allow someone else to execute them, share your creative side but express that you prefer for others to take the lead. Tell me about the most exciting project you have worked on this year and the most significant thing you learned from it.

"The most exciting project that I have been a part of this year would have to be the AI integration I made on a payment system for one of my clients. I was the programming team lead and thoroughly enjoyed furthering my knowledge in machine learning during that project. I look forward to bringing this skills and knowledge I learned in this project to Microsoft."

Your interviewer is proposing this question to see that you have passion and interest in the projects that you take on. Chances are, the gigs you find to be the most exciting are the ones that require the skills you enjoy flexing the most. Talk about one specific project, what the end goal was, what your role was through the project, and the best thing you learned along the way. "I am currently on a project team with my current employer that is working on new and improved ways to promote diversity hiring. I was asked to be on this project to represent my department. While I don't have an HR background, this project sure has opened my eyes regarding how biased processes can impact the diversity of hires within an organization. "I completed my Bachelor of Applied Technology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. During that time I specialized in Data Management and Analysis. I graduated with a 3.99 GPA, one of the highest in my class."

While they can get a good overview by looking at your resume, your interviewer is asking is for you to take a few minutes to bring your education and training to life for them. As you answer this question, talk about the formal educational path you took to get to this point in your career. Don't hesitate to talk about personal motivations you had for this educational path. "I received a B of S degree in Computer Science from Liberty University in 1990. All but the first 2 years of my career were in consulting. I've always invested in myself. In your opinion, what has been the biggest launch from Microsoft in the past three years?

"App mirroring which allows Android phone users to take their mobile apps and mirror them onto their Windows desktop device, is one of the more recent launches that caught my attention. Transferring web pages from a mobile screen to a Windows 10 desktop is a fantastic idea. This concept allows users to pick up where they left off on mobile, which I believe is a game-changer for people who often swap devices during the day, as they are on the go."

At some point during your time with them, your interviewer at Microsoft would like to see that you have a thumb on the heartbeat of what their company has been up to as of late. To say that you want to work for Microsoft is easy. What takes effort is to show the interviewer that you have an active interest in the company's product releases and other exciting announcements. Prior to your interview, make sure to research some of the new and exciting product launches that Microsoft has had recently and be able to talk a bit about what you feel has been the most impactful. There is no right or wrong answer to this question as long as you can speak passionately to your interviewer.

"The Windows 365 cloud service has certainly had a major impact on both businesses and individuals recently and has been a game changer for businesses transitioning to a hybrid work model. The cloud-based model that 365 operates in is providing a more safe and secure way of sharing data in the hybrid environment. Many of your largest customers have reaped this benefit from the launch."

How would you explain the cloud to someone with zero internet knowledge?

"If I were to explain cloud computing to someone outside of the industry, I would say that cloud computing is a way to deliver services over the internet. For instance, we use cloud computing when we store photos online, and even when we use different apps on our phone."

Technical terms and methods can be confusing to anyone outside of the industry. Some say that if you cannot quickly explain what you do in layman's terms, then you do not understand it well enough. You should be able to explain everything that you do on a level that would make sense to a 12-year-old. Your interviewer is testing to see if you can do this with this question. As you answer, keep your reply brief and try to keep all words that you use easily understandable. If you are in a field where knowledge of cloud computing isn't necessary, your interviewer will still be hoping that you can easily explain it as a staff member representing Microsoft.

"It's funny you ask this question because I just did this over the weekend with a younger cousin. I explained to them that computers once needed boxes to store information, games, and pictures. Over time, as our need for more and more information, games, and pictures increased, the boxes didn't work anymore. I then explained that the cloud worked like electricity being sent through power lines, except that the cloud was connected through the air rather than a line."

"Like outsourcing. Take your car to the shop. Wedding, rent chairs, only what I need. I don't need to buy 500 chairs and store them in my garage."

If your current company shut down today, what would you do to quickly adapt?

"If my current company shut down today, I would tap into my network and call everyone that I knew in my field. I would be diligent in looking for a company that needed someone with my skillset. I wouldn't let it get me down, and I would certainly hit the ground running in my job search with a positive attitude."

"That's a tough question! I have been with my company for so long that this is the first role I have applied for in over ten years. If I lost my job today, I would think about taking a week or two of downtime with my family to reconsider all options moving forward in my career. Of course, Microsoft is my dream employer so I would hopefully be back in this position with you in the very short term. If I needed to, I would call in a few favors from industry peers that I've grown close to over the years as I have a strong network and a good reputation in this industry."

Discuss a tech product that you do not like. What changes would you make to improve it?

"Tech can be life-changing, and it can also be an utter failure. My least favorite tech purchase in the last year would be the Google Pixel Slate. I understand Google was trying to compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro and the iPad, but at its price tag of nearly $1,600, I found that it fell short. One factor I would change is to increase the application support offering. Also, I would have made materials and designs in-house versus through third-party developers. This choice would have made for much better graphics and a more beautiful looking user interface."

We all know that it's one thing to be opinionated, and then it's another ballgame to have an opinion and know what to do about it. By asking this question, your interviewer would like to see that you have the ability to see opportunities for change, rather than remaining in a negative, 'I don't like it' mentality. Discuss a tech product that you do not particularly enjoy, and offer up a couple of suggestions for improvement. Your opinion should be on a product unrelated to Microsoft.

"The previous two years have certainly made people more reliant upon technology, and this certainly hasn't been a great overall experience for some people. Being a gamer, I purchased a new PS5 during the pandemic. In talking with friends and others online, it leaves so much to be desired when compared to the Xbox Series X. Being a person that uses their gaming system as their primary entertainment machine, I just don't have the ability to pin my favorite apps like users of the Xbox series do. As well, the lack of competitive games falls very short of the mark for me."

"One tech product that I'm not a huge fan of is Siri. Of course, Siri was an innovative product in the tech world when it came out, as it was the first virtual voice assistant. However, I find that Siri usually redirects me to the Internet when I ask questions. On the other hand, I've found that Amazon Alexa has a much more robust database of information, and it tends to remember the information I have provided in the past. I would love to see Siri incorporate these features, as it would be great to have an Amazon Alexa right within my phone."
