MediaMath Interview Questions

  1. 1.

    What motivates you?

Typically, employees find motivation through environments where they feel supported and encouraged. The interviewer wants to know how they could drive you - even on the toughest of days! Be open with the interviewer about the ways you can stay motivated on the job when the going gets tough.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I enjoy researching find motivation by implementing new best practices when change is required. Stagnant environments drain me. I like change, but only if it is justified, and when there is a chance for visible improvement in efficiency or morale."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I consider myself a self-motivated individual who is constantly striving to be better and do better. I draw inspiration from leaders in the industry and those around me to keep my motivation high."

  2. 2.

The technical teams at MediaMath are made up of people with a wide variety of technical skills, some of who are highly specialized. How would you manage a professional team with so much diversity?

MediaMath finds that bringing together people with diverse skill sets to accomplish a goal is important when developing or improving upon any marketing platform with a wide array of capabilities. The challenge is taking full advantage of each person skills and talents to build the most competitive product.

On a general level, talk about how you would go about accomplishing this difficult task, and if possible, touch upon any hurdles you may need to overcome along the way. Be prepared to answer possible follow-up questions as the interviewer may ask for details in your response.

      Rachelle's Answer

"Based on my experience working in different technical departments over the years, I know there is a wide variety of skills people with a technical background can have. It will be important to outline the technical needs of the marketing tools we are creating before building the team and assigning specific tasks. Once the needs are clearly defined, technical team members would be matched up to tasks based on their skill set and experience. There would be some difficulty balancing skills and experience with interests. We may face situations where the needs of the project will have to override the personal interests of the individual. I believe we can reach a level of compromise where team members can work collaboratively with others on different tasks, but they would still have the main task for which they are responsible."

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a preliminary step, I would conduct a thorough review of the product development process for the DSP. This review will give the technical team members a clear picture of what technical needs will arise and how their skills and experience will fit into the larger pictures. After giving the team time, I would gain individual feedback on where they believe their technical skills would add the most value. I understand that the initial assignment of roles may not be perfect and require adjustments over time based on outcomes and individual feedback. Despite role assignments, it's important the team members continue to learn technical skills from one another as the development process progresses."

  3. 3.

Have you had experience working on or with any other marketing automation platforms or software?

Having some knowledge or experience with marketing automation tools offered by other companies helps team members have a better understanding of MediaMath's position in the marketplace. Awareness of industry players' competitive advantages, as well as market opportunities, will help MediaMath position itself to increase its market share.

Talk about your experience with Marketing Automation tools or platforms, whether as a user or a developer. If you do not have direct experience working with them, share your knowledge of the industry and the major players. Be prepared by conducting competitive research before your interview.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have experience managing the launch of Hubspot Marketing at the last company for which I worked. The marketing team in our company had chosen to use this Marketing Automation platform for the management of its marketing campaigns, and I handle the technical implementation. Based on my observations, Hubspot Marketing helped the marketing team plan for and launch integrated campaigns in an organized and efficient manner, allowing for customized messages based on the target population. The interface also makes it user-friendly allowing new user training to occur quickly. Based on my knowledge and experience of these types of platforms, there seem to be opportunities to develop the analytical and AI capabilities to help marketers make smarter decisions."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Although I have not worked directly with Marketing Automation platforms or tools from a technical perspective, I am aware of some of the major players in the industry. Marketo has become a successful competitor, offering a tool that is user-friendly and covers all of a marketer's digital marketing needs at different stages of the customer relationship development process. My technical background tells me that Marketo offers a platform that easily integrates into most companies' systems as it works with Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, among many others. User friendliness and the expansion of digital marketing capabilities seem to be two areas that Marketing Automation companies are continually expanding on. I believe that analytics and tracking of marketing campaigns need continual improvement and is an area that MediaMath could concentrate its product efforts on."

  4. 4.

What are important reporting and analytics capabilities a DSP (demand-side platform) should have?

Reporting and analytics capabilities are one of the essential features of a demand-side platform. Your answer to this question should show your understanding of the reporting and analytics capabilities of DSP's in general, and particularly with that of MediaMath.

      Rachelle's Answer

"The reporting and analytics capabilities of a DSP is crucial as client companies are looking to ensure their advertising efforts are effective and are reaping the benefits of their investment. Beyond the basic measures such as click-through-rate and open rates, I believe it is important that a DSP can integrate a variety of data. This integration includes things such as geographic and demographic data for different advertising channels and data from different devices. This data allows companies to understand the customer journey better. Based on my research, all of these capabilities come with MediaMath's platform and much more including the ability to evaluate advertising channels clients may not be currently advertising with."

      Rachelle's Answer

"An essential feature from an analytics and reporting perspective is the ability to customize their reports and integrate data from outside sources. The higher the level of customization offered to client companies, the better they will be able to evaluate the advertising efforts unique to their business. Also, being able to integrate data from a source outside of the advertising platform will also allow companies to tailor their analyses better to answer their strategic questions. The DSP offered by MediaMath offers robust reporting and analytics capabilities that can be customized based on the client's needs. "

  5. 5.

Do you have experience with big data tools for machine learning such as Apache Spark?

Apache Spark is an analytics engine for big data processing. The interviewer is interested in learning more about your exposure to tools for machine learning. Talk about the tools and systems in which you bring experience. If you are aware of the tools used at MediaMath, then focus on your exposure to those. If you are unsure of the tools that MediaMath uses, you can take this time to ask.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have experience with Apache Spark, and consider myself an intermediate user in this particular tool. I also have about five years' experience with Caffe, which is a deep learning framework. Could you share with me the tools you use most often at MediaMath?"

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am newer to the industry but am somewhat familiar with a couple of Apache products including Spark, Mahout, and SINGA. I am interested in learning more about the tools you use for collecting and organizing big data. Which tools are most often used here at MediaMath?"

  6. 6.

Discuss a couple of software, application, or platform sales techniques. Which sales technique do you think is most effective for MediaMath, and why?

The interviewer would like to see that you have researched MediaMath, putting some thought into the most significant selling features of their products and services. When it comes to sales closing techniques, you could:

      - Offer a short trial for free
      - Have a great email marketing campaign showing off the features of your software
      - Give software demos
      - Sell pre-paid annual memberships

Perhaps you have some ideas of your own! Discuss which selling options you think would be the best fit for what MediaMath is offering. Be ready to support your answer with facts.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I recently read that free trial offers can increase conversions by up to 25% and, because, MediaMath has a straightforward platform and product, I believe it would be very effective to allow people to try it for free for 14 days. The prospective customer would quickly see that it's simple to navigate and incredibly helpful."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Since there are so many customizable features that come with your product, I feel that the best sales technique would be a free 30-minute demo, followed up with a short trial period. I think it would be important for prospective customers to see the product in action, and how it would work for them, specifically."

  7. 7.

Most of MediaMath's client advertise through digital channels. Which digital channels are you most familiar with and what has been your experience using these particular channels?

Digital marketing channels have quickly become a cost-effective way to deliver consumer advertising. MediaMath's clients use many different types of digital channels depending on the industry, the product or service offered and the target market.

Because digital is a highly used channel, MediaMath is looking for candidates who have a variety of experiences with it. This experience may include email marketing, blog writing, Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing, among many others. Talk about the two to three types of digital marketing channels you are most familiar with and the advantages or disadvantages of each.

      Rachelle's Answer

"While working at advertising agencies, I have gained experience with writing emails and blogs and applying SEO to marketing content. I have found that email marketing is a personalized way to reconnect with past customers or reach out to potential customers who have shown some interest in a company's product or service. Blogs are an effective way to build a company's reputation on a particular subject related to its product or service. SEO helps potential customers find your content and ultimately a company's website. It is an effective means to promote the visibility of its website to the right audience."

      Rachelle's Answer

"My advertising agency experience has given me opportunities to work with Social Media Marketing and Email Marketing. Social Media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest provide a great vehicle for a company's well-developed ads to reach a large targeted audience. These social media platforms also make it easy for interested people to share the ad with their network of friends, thereby quickly increasing a company's reach even further. Email Marketing allows for a high level of personalization based on the data a company has collected. However, I have learned that both of these channels may not be appropriate for every target group or service/product. For example, users of some social media channels may skew younger, and if that is not a company's target audience, it may not want to use that particular channel."

  8. 8.

How do you handle a larger than average workload?

The interviewer wants to know that you can handle the workload required of you in this position and that you will not become overwhelmed when workloads unexpectedly increase. When workloads increase, stress levels do too. How do you react?

Here are some suggestions on how to handle a large workload:

      - List your tasks and prioritize them
      - Think of which jobs add to the company's bottom line, and start there (Closest to the money!)
      - Exhale. Relax for a minute and collect yourself
      - Organize your tasks by which ones you can complete independently and which ones you need help with
      - Take sufficient breaks, so you do not exhaust yourself
      - Communicate your struggles with your leadership or team

      Rachelle's Answer

"When I have a large workload on my plate, I do not stress over the tasks that are in front of me. Rather, I make a simple plan of which tasks are a high priority and which tasks are a lower priority. The higher priority tasks, I complete first. Through this system, I can focus on my tasks individually, rather than stress out by the multitude of tasks ahead of me."

      Rachelle's Answer

"With enthusiasm! Having a large workload is part of being in the online software business. I prioritize the work and enlist additional resources where necessary."

  9. 9.

How would your references describe you?

You have likely given the interviewer a list of references already; however, if you have not, be sure to bring a list with you to your interview. You should provide the names of at least two people who can give you recommendations, preferably individuals to whom you have reported.

If you do not have any work experience, you can also refer to professors, high-school teachers, a pastor, a mentor, or even the parent of a friend who may know you well and can provide a character reference. If you have volunteer work, you can point the reference towards that experience as well.

Some ways that your references may describe you:

      - High-integrity
      - Accountable
      - Reliable
      - Punctual
      - Accepting of feedback
      - Confident
      - Well-educated
      - Honest
      - Results-driven

      Rachelle's Answer

"My references would describe me as entirely reliable, results-driven, and focused on company goals. I have some wonderful references who will attest to my dedicated personality and character in the workplace. It is important to me that I act as a solid mentor and example to the team members that I lead."

      Rachelle's Answer

"If you call my references, they will let you know that I am competitive, self-motivated, and outgoing. I am unafraid to make cold calls, and I will not take the first 'no' as a final answer from a potential client. I like to win so if there is a sales contest present, I will push myself extra hard to win it. This extra push may mean working overtime hours, adding more cold calls per day, or following up more diligently than expected with prospective clients."

  10. 10.

What roles are you comfortable assuming in working as part of a larger team?

Coming to work for a consulting business requires the ability to work as part of a larger team on the projects you will be heading. Teamwork in this setting involves versatility, and your interviewer will be looking to hear that you have that versatility.

Many times, you will be taking the bull by the horns and leading the way. Other times, you will be the worker bee researching behind the scenes. You may be the organizer of projects behind the scenes as well. Make sure that you highlight your ability to be flexible when working as part of the MediaMath team.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am comfortable working in any role within a team, and I think my experiences throughout my career demonstrate this well. At many times in my career, I've been the legwork of team operations and have easily taken direction on projects and been able to hit pre-established deadlines. As well, I've led many projects and have shown my ability to lead others in a team effort and the ability to delegate tasks and set milestones for projects. If hired for this position, you can rest assured that I can be a key team player with your clients in helping better their business."

      Rachelle's Answer

"From a very young age in my career, I've always been a natural leader in a team-based environment. My excellent communication skills, honesty, critical thinking and decision making skills have proven time and time again that I can lead others in the most effective way possible. And while being a leader comes naturally to me, I can easily let others take the lead on projects."

  11. 11.

Besides compensation, what do you value the most in the workplace?

Financial compensation aside, the interviewer would like to know what is most important to you when looking for a new job. Your answer will show MediaMath some direction when they are ready to make you an offer of employment. You can talk about health benefits, work-life balance, workplace culture, growth, or even continued education opportunities. The sky is the limit!

      Rachelle's Answer

"To me, the ability to travel for work and see my clients is a significant factor. The thing is that when I have this flexibility, I am better set up to exceed my goals."

      Rachelle's Answer

"What I value most in the workplace are growth opportunities. I am missing this in my current role and very much look forward to working with a company who will provide me with bigger moves as I prove myself."

  12. 12.

How do you ensure you are aware of all the new advertising platform developments?

Most companies competing in this industry understand the importance of professional growth concerning product specific and technical knowledge. MediaMath would like to know that you find continued learning meaningful as well and want to see how you go about remaining current with competitive offerings and new technologies. This learning may include both formal and informal learning opportunities. Be sure to specify any proactive measures you take to educate yourself continually.

      Rachelle's Answer

"The competitive landscape for advertising platforms is constantly changing, so I find it is important to remain current with new products and service offerings. Regularly, I set aside time to read industry-specific news where I learn about new companies entering the industry and the products they offer. Also, I look for opportunities to attend conferences and training sessions where I learn of emerging technologies related to advertising platforms. These opportunities also allow me to network and learn from my industry peers."

      Rachelle's Answer

"In addition to attending industry conferences and training seminars, I also find the time to research which advertising platforms my clients' competitors are using. If hired, I would compare the attributes of MediaMath's demand-side platform to those used by competitors of MediaMath's clients. This competitive intelligence would allow me to keep a pulse on the new developments of these competing DSPs. I also believe it may help MediaMath's teams generate ideas for new offerings of its own."

  13. 13.

As a team member, what do you believe will be the most valuable skill you have to offer MediaMath as we continue to strive to be a competitive player in DSP and various other advertising andmarketing tools?

Hiring managers would like to see which skills you find to be your most substantial assets and if those skills match the needs of MediaMath. Be sure to select the technical expertise you are most confident with as they may ask more specific follow-up questions about your experience with that particular skill.

As you formulate your response, consider how your specific skill will help MediaMath remain competitive with its demand-side platform and other online marketing tools. If possible, highlight how your ability may differentiate you from other candidates.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe my web development skills would be an asset as MediaMath strives to reach its ambitious goals. I have had years of experience developing websites with a vast array of capabilities for a variety of large companies. An important aspect of good web development is the ability to make the site user-friendly, and being able to balance that with the robust capabilities of the site. This factor is important when developing online marketing tools where many core users may have a non-technical background."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Based on my knowledge and experience with demand-side platforms, I am confident that my database programming skills would make valuable contributions to MediaMath's continuous efforts to remain relevant in the industry. As more companies look to make intelligent business decisions with a growing amount of data, analytical and tracking capabilities of DSPs will be a capability they will seek. I believe they will be looking for tools that offer powerful analytical capabilities. My database programming skills will help MediaMath improve its platform with increased efficiency."

  14. 14.

How does data drive a business' success?

Data-driven decision making is becoming a more critical topic every year. Companies can leverage data analytics to determine:

      - Productivity
      - Competitive analysis
      - How, when, and where products are used
      - Customer demographics
      - Pattern analysis
      - Business growth

Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you feel companies can best use data to drive the success of their business.

      Rachelle's Answer

"When I take a hard look at the many uses of data, I see that data can be collected in a plethora of ways to determine the success of a new product launch, competitive analysis, or patterns that occur, which may not be seen by the human eye. In my career, I have the most experience using data to help drive employee productivity and onboarding solutions which can save a company thousands of dollars."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Data can drive every aspect of a business' success if approached and utilized correctly. In my experience, I have seen that companies underutilize what a full data analysis approach can do for them. Analytics programs should be set up for marketing, sales, employee productivity, product efficiency, competitive analysis and more."

  15. 15.

What kind of people do you enjoy working with?

Company culture is a significant factor when looking for a new position. Talk to the interviewer about the types of personalities you prefer. Be sure to remain positive and avoid using this as an opportunity to speak poorly of previous colleagues.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I best enjoy working with driven individuals, people who are positive, energetic, and take accountability for their work. I do have the ability to work with a large variety of individuals; however, these are the ideal traits I would see in future colleagues."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I enjoy working with individuals who work hard and love what they do. Being surrounded by passionate people motivates me."
