What is your greatest weakness?

"I know this will come off as cliche, but it's truthful. My weakness is not delegating. I know what I want and how I want it done, so it's often easier to do it myself. However, it can inhibit my ability to grow. I cannot take on every step of a project; I need to be able to give the task or a portion of it to another team member or direct report, let go of the control and know it will be taken care of. I've spoken with my current manager about it, and we've developed a system where he can call me out on the behavior since I'm often unaware of it. By bringing awareness to it at the moment, I find my propensity to hold onto control has decreased, so I'm certainly moving in the right direction."

"I rate my problem-solving skills as an 8/10. I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as efficient as I would like to be, but all in all, I do feel that my problem-solving skills are above average. My supervisor and coworkers will attest to my fast reflexes when a problem arises, and they would also say that I remain calm under pressure."

The interviewer wants to know how you would rate your problem-solving skills. Of course, you want to give yourself a strong rating; however, you must remain realistic. Everyone has room to learn and improve! Be sure to justify your score as well.

"I would say I get a solid 8.3 on a scale of 10. It seems weird to give myself something like a .3, but I think of it as an 83%, which is a B- teetering on a solid B. It's a solid grade, with definite room for improvement, since I'm certainly not perfect. The reason for the B-/B grade would be that I'm quick to take action and figure out the solution as I go, but sometimes I could benefit from taking a moment to pause and reflect or gather other contributors before taking action. That said, I believe I generally get the best outcome possible when faced with a challenge."

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?

"I am a great problem solver because I do not allow stress to cloud my judgment and mute my sound decision-making. I am a keen observer with a great memory, which allows me to recall unique solutions or ideas."

Employers want to know that you have a systematic approach to problem-solving. Consider the skills and qualities that help you successfully face problems. Perhaps you have a keen eye for detail. Maybe you can see opportunity when others can only focus on the issue. Share your strengths as a problem solver and your ability to come up with innovative solutions.

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

"I understand the importance of keeping my knowledge current in this industry. Technology and advancements in medicine happen so quickly! I keep my knowledge current by staying in touch with a few colleagues from medical school. We email or text each other when new studies come out, and I attend yearly conferences covering healthcare industry changes. I also subscribe to a medical podcast that alerts me when new information is downloaded."

"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he walked into the facility, employees quietly announced that he was in the building so that everyone could prepare for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do many good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."

All of these skills are used when working with a challenging person. The interviewer wants to ensure that you would work well with other team members if hired for the position.

Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize some individuals are difficult to please. Think about that one person you have encountered that is hard to be around. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. "During my internship, I had a fellow student who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated person created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks regarding group projects. It didn't take much time before our professor noticed this particular individual was slacking. In most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

If MedStar Health hired you today, what would you accomplish first?

"When we spoke earlier, you mentioned that you urgently sought to improve the inventory management at your facility. I want to offer my skills in implementing a program that I have used successfully to manage inventory. I plan to make a positive impact quickly after meeting my coworkers and seeing where my skills are most beneficial to MedStar Health."

The interviewer wants to hire team members who clearly know how they will contribute to MedStar Health if hired. Hiring and training employees is a significant investment, and the interviewer wants to ensure that you will be an asset to the team from day one.

If the interviewer has spoken about areas they would like to improve within the organization during the interview, focus on using that in your response. "If I could choose any area of healthcare services to be a subject matter expert in, I would choose geriatric care. I feel that this particular focus is not as popular as some, and becoming an expert in it would allow me more career opportunities."

"What causes me the most stress at work is when a child is sick or injured, and the family feels helpless. As a mom of two, I am empathetic for their situation and know if my children were sick, I would feel the same way. I work through the stress by comforting the family and assuring them we are doing the best we can for their child."

I have found that volunteers can be helpful when these situations arise, which helps reduce the stress levels."

Tell me about yourself.

"A bit about me. I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I spent the past few months traveling the world with Doctors Without Borders. It was the best experience I could have given myself, as I learned so much from seeing how the rest of the world lives. I returned to the US last month and have been actively looking for new work since then. I am eager to get into the routine of a career again."

"I find it's pretty simple to balance life and work with the right company, and it doesn't feel like a chore when I love what I do. When at home, my family gets my attention first. We like to cook and eat meals together to catch up on family time. On the weekends, I like to do things for myself, like hiking, yoga, and paddle boarding, ensuring that I am rejuvenated before the work week begins."

We love to go camping, boating, and to football games. Being with my family keeps me balanced and ready to face each work day with a smile on my face."

Do you prefer to work in a team based position or individually?

"I always give my best, whether I am doing an independent project or working in a team environment. I enjoy the camaraderie of working in a team, but I can also be successful working autonomously."

The interviewer wants to understand in which situation you are happiest and most productive. Talk to them about your preference for teamwork or working individually. Be sure to avoid pigeonholing yourself into one particular scenario (i.e., I only like to work on a team). "I understand that compassion is one of the top qualities I need to bring to the workplace, being in the healthcare profession. I consider myself a very compassionate individual. I am warm-hearted, responsive to my patients' needs, and always empathetic."

To succeed in the healthcare services industry, you should have substantial compassion for your patients or customers. Talk to the interviewer about the compassionate qualities that you possess and how you rate your level of empathy for others. "Yes, I most certainly consider myself a compassionate person. I take the opportunity to understand and help others whenever possible. While attending university, I spent a lot of time volunteering at a local hospice - not only for the added experience but also to give back to others. I look forward to continuing this level of compassionate care with your organization."

How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity to see if you will be a good fit for the team. Your example could include buzzwords such as extroverted, energetic, and confident.

You want to describe your personality as something that complements the position you are interviewing for. For example, if you are interviewing for a nursing position, you should focus on using keywords like compassionate, friendly, approachable, and good-natured.

"I'm genuinely easy-going, probably from all the international travel I experienced in my 20's. I would describe my personality as friendly, compassionate, and outgoing. I often have colleagues and patients tell me I am easy to talk to and get along with."

When have you shown a willingness to learn a new method or new approach to solving a problem?

"About a year ago at my previous job, we were introduced to a new electronic medical system software program to be implemented immediately. My manager asked if I would take the lead in training the staff on the new system so we could have a seamless transition. I was unfamiliar with the software and spent time learning the system and developing a training program. Many were resistant to the change, but it became an easier program to use and cut down on documentation time. In the end, everyone embraced the change."

"Recently, our department purchased new splinting and bandaging equipment. I was hesitant to use the new equipment because we had no training on how the splints worked. I asked my supervisor if we could have a representative come and give us a presentation to learn how to properly use the splints and avoid further injuring the patients. Once we had a presentation and in-service training, I felt comfortable using the new equipment."

"I worked in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a shared waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice weekly, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

Explain to the interviewer that you remain calm under pressure and can resolve problems quickly and efficiently.

Talk about a time when you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

"We had many group projects in university, and I noticed a consistent problem with team members showing up late for meetings or messaging in sick at the very last moment. As the team leader, rather than getting upset, I proposed that when a team member disrespectfully dropped the ball, they would be asked to leave the group and find a new group or commit to an independent project. I felt this encouraged accountability and showed teamwork as a privilege rather than a right. Team member commitments increased as did work ethic among the groups."

"I have three years of experience ordering medical supplies and maintaining inventory. I fully understand that there is an art to being properly organized when it comes to the availability of supplies. I have used various software and programs such as ABC and XYZ for medical ordering and inventory. What programs or software does MedStar Health use?"

"I am an easily motivated individual, and it does not take much to keep me engaged. I am fully aware that healthcare-related positions can seem thankless, but I have never really experienced that. My patients and family members have always been thankful to me and acknowledge their gratitude for my work. The majority of my motivation comes from simply helping people."
