"Working as a software engineer in a few different corporations, I had the fortunate opportunity to participate in product development projects. These projects were for new products that complemented our current offerings. I had the opportunity to actively participate in all phases - from brainstorming to final product release. One of the most challenging aspects of working in these groups was understanding the roles and perspectives of team members, most of whom worked in different departments. However, this challenge resulted in an invaluable learning experience for me as I gained a better understanding of the company and product development process overall."

At Marketo, having some form of product development experience is very helpful as it gives team members a holistic view of its products. Technical team members are encourage to view the project from different perspectives and to not be caught up in the programming or troubleshooting of the products. Share your product development experiences, which may include involvement in all phases or maybe only a couple. In your response, include what aspect of your experiences you found to be most challenging and why.

"As a software developer, I have had experience working on product development teams in different capacities. My various roles had me contributing to different phases of the project including brainstorming, programming and product release. In each of these roles, I offered a technical perspective on the proposed product. At times, my participation in these projects proved to be difficult as I tried to communicate the more technical aspects of the product to a non-technical audience. Despite the difficulties, I believe I learned a great deal about the different development phases and the roles each department plays."

Customization is an important aspect of email marketing as a company's goal is to get the right message to a customer or prospect. Tell me about a time when you worked with the customization aspect of email marketing.

"Personalizing email marketing messages help companies' messages stand out in a crowded inbox. It's important that companies start using more than just the name when it comes to email customization. Many of the more well-known companies use purchase and/or browsing history to personalize the messages they send out. I have worked with companies to link their databases to their email marketing tools to find more impactful ways to customize messages. In the process, I learned how improvements in database structures and data stored can help build more impactful messages."

Many companies find customization to be an important part of their email marketing programs. Customization makes the messages more personal and relevant to the recipients, whether they are current customers or prospects. Talk about your understanding of how companies use customization in email marketing and include details of your experiences working with email customization.

"Working with marketing departments of various companies, I have learned the importance of having an impactful message. Customization is one effective way to do this. Although my technical experience in this area may appear limited, I believe my experience on the marketing side will help to build better tools and processes to streamline email marketing customization. Making the process more efficient will help marketers concentrate resources on strategy and less on tasks that can be planned ahead of time."

What do you think our company's biggest challenge is?

"After speaking with you further about the company, and this role, I believe that the biggest challenge this company has faced is in hiring the right talent. I have a strong background in recruitment as well as management and do feel that I can assist with this hurdle. Having the right team players is imperative to a company's success and, if we can tackle that, I see great things happening."

What is this particular company's biggest challenge, and how do you think that you can assist?

"That is a tough question because I have not spend time working within your organization. Knowing the industry, my best guess would be that the biggest challenge is the same challenge any marketing company faces, and that is keeping up with the fast paced changes in marketing, advertising, and social media."

Tell me about your experience working with databases, specifically as it relates to email marketing platforms.

"Without a reliable connection between a company's customer data and its email marketing platform, customer emails would be significantly less impactful. However, it is important to understand that it is important that there is a two-way connection between a company's databases and the platform as data should be fed back into a database storing data such as open rates and click-through rates. I have experience working with database connections in both situations, ensuring data is correctly transferred and stored in databases. My experience includes troubleshooting issues that lead to incorrect personalization of emails and corrupt data being transferred back to the company."

Databases are an integral part of email marketing platforms. Data stored in these databases are responsible for personalization and segmentation of email communications. Detail your database experience while working with email marketing platforms. If for some reason your database experience is limited, make sure you are able to communicate your understanding of the vital relationship between a company's customer database and its email marketing platform.

"My extensive experience working with data as it relates to email marketing campaigns has exposed me to database issues that may emerge unexpectedly. I have seen the effects of having errors in database connections or corrupt data and the importance of ensuring customer data is stored properly in databases. It not only affects a company's ability to send appropriate messages to its customers, but it also can prevent companies from conducting meaningful analyses of their email marketing efforts."

Artificial intelligence plays an important role in Online Marketing. Marketo would like to ensure its tools continue to include artificial intelligence capabilities. Talk about your experience with or knowledge of artificial intelligence.

"I believe artificial intelligence helps companies make informed decisions more quickly. It also allows companies to mimic human interaction online, thereby making it more likely to create a personal connection with customers in a cost efficient manner. I have experience implementing artificial intelligence into chatbots for a large e-commerce company. Our team used large data sets to develop algorithms used by chatbots to address customer service issues online. The development was an ongoing process of adjusting algorithms to ensure customer communications effectively and efficiently addressed the issues."

Artificial intelligence allows systems to learn from past experiences to complete human tasks such as decision making. In the realm of Online Marketing, examples where artificial intelligence may be used is in building marketing campaign strategies and with chatbots. Marketo would like to gauge your knowledge of and experience with artificial intelligence. Relate any experiences you may have with it to how it may be used in the Online Marketing industry. "I do not have experience working directly with artificial intelligence, but I am confident my knowledge and interest in the subject will add value to the product development work at Marketo. From an Online Marketing perspective, artificial intelligence helps marketers to create personalized online messages with little or no human intervention. This will allow companies to quickly send messages to targeted populations with the most effective messaging at the right time and through the right channel. In addition, with the advent of voice assistants such as Alexa, voice search will be an important aspect of online marketing and artificial intelligence plays a role in this as well. As algorithms improve over time, voice search will become more reliable and used more frequently."

As Marketo continues to develop and offer new social media marketing products and services, what skills do you provide that you believe would provide value to our efforts?

"Based on my research and previous knowledge, I know Marketo offers products that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of marketers' social media marketing efforts. I believe my experience in the industry coupled with my programming skills will be helpful in identifying and developing future products offered by Marketo. My Java and Ruby on Rails programming skills will be helpful in the development of new applications. In addition, my project management skills will also be useful as a product is taken from development to market release. A data integration and analysis tool for social media platforms will be helpful as more and more companies look to make informed data driven marketing decisions."

I believe my database skills will be beneficial to product creation efforts at Marketo. The most valuable social media marketing tools aggregate data allowing marketers to monitor their social media efforts and improve their strategies within different platforms. I am confident my database programming skills will help find and evaluate the data value created by future tools. My experience will ensure the tools' data analytics capabilities run efficiently and maximize return on marketing investments. As marketers look to make and implement decisions quickly, a tool that combines analysis and execution would provide great value. This would require a thorough analysis of available tools and strategic planning to improve on current industry offerings."

Industry experts believe Demand Side Platforms (DSP's) have made a positive impact to Digital Advertising. Based on your knowledge, in what ways do you find this to be true and how can Marketo improve its products or services to benefit marketers?

"Demand Side Platforms automates the process in which ads are purchased and sold. This tool makes the process more cost efficient, and because it is automated, it removes the possibility of human error in ad selections. It allows for better targeting of ads as well with the use of vast browsing history data. I strongly believe that the usefulness of a Demand Side Platform is limited by the experience of the person using it. Marketo may benefit by offering on-going training to its clients to ensure they are maximizing the value of the platform."

When asking this type of question, hiring managers are testing your knowledge of Digital Advertising tools and technology. "As a developer, my work with corporate marketing departments gave me an understanding of different tools available to marketers to help them manage social media marketing efforts. There are platforms that help them track and manage their marketing on different social media channels in one place. A popular product in this category is Buffer - a tool which supported by many third party applications. Another type of tool is related to social media content management. Buzzsumo is an example of this type of tool as it, using data, helps determine worthy content topics and identifies the best social media channels to post the content on."

Marketo's hiring managers are interested in candidates with some knowledge or experience with social media marketing technology or tools. Knowledge of current offerings in the industry will help Marketo better address unmet needs of current and future clients. "Working in the marketing technology industry, I have been exposed to many different tools marketers use to manage their social media marketing. There are tools that help marketers create content including Canva which is a user friendly graphic design application allowing the quick creation of visuals for their social media channels. Other tools help with the scheduling of social media content. Edgar is an example of this type of tool as it allows marketers to schedule content on different channels and redistribute it at scheduled intervals to followers who may not have viewed it earlier."

More third party apps are being developed for specific social media platforms. What third party apps are you aware of that provide added value in increasing the effectiveness of a particular platform?

"Through my work experience with social media marketing technology, I am familiar with SocialDrift and Grytics. SocialDrift is a third party app for Instagram that automates Instagram interactions using machine learning. This app increases engagement with Instagram users through likes, comments and follows, ultimately increasing a brand's exposure on this social media platform. Grytics is an app that gathers data on Facebook groups that help businesses make better decisions on messaging and targeting to these populations. The app consolidates this information so marketers do not have to spend the time reading every post."

Knowledge and experience with third party apps in this area is valuable as a team member at Marketo, as it is always looking for ways to broaden its product offerings. This is particularly the case as marketers are looking to get a higher return on their social media marketing dollars.As you mention particular third party apps, be sure to discuss how it improves on a particular social media platform feature. "My app development work has given me the opportunity to learn about a few third party apps associated with social media platforms. The companies developing the apps understand the need to make these apps more efficient and effective for marketers. Yotpo is an app used with Instagram that allows it to aggregate all posts with pictures related to a certain brand or product. Once aggregated, the app takes care of contacting these Instagram users to see if their posts can be used through its company account. This app saves marketers time and money by conducting this task efficiently. TweetDeck is another app of value to marketers, particularly those using Twitter as it allows them to schedule, monitor and queue up tweets in one place. This save marketers time and allows them control over targeting and the timing of their messages."

At Marketo, we believe data management is crucial when executing and evaluating a campaign. What is your experience working with data as it relates to Digital Advertising?

"As with any type of marketing campaign, I have learned that data management is key to launching and running a successful Digital Advertising campaign. My work with Data Management Platforms has exposed me to the sizable volume of data collected and managed for Digital Advertising campaigns. As part of my job, I managed large data warehouses and extracted data required for targeting and evaluating Digital Advertising campaigns. This was crucial to ensure that these campaigns were effective and meeting company goals. If given the opportunity to work with Marketo, I am confident that my knowledge will help clients better manage their Digital Advertising data."

In your response, talk about the jobs or projects where you worked with data related to Digital Advertising. While doing so, express your understanding of the importance of data management in this area. "The capture and exchange of data before, during and after a Digital Advertising campaign is imperative. Although my work with Data Management Platforms is somewhat limited, I have worked with team members to troubleshoot issues as it relates to Digital Advertising data. This includes addressing issues with data capture including the refreshing and cleaning out of 'stale' cookies. In addition, I have experience troubleshooting integration issues with data warehouses storing the necessary data for Digital Advertising campaigns. As an active member of the technology team at Marketo, I trust that I can help the data management efforts run smoothly."

Data security continues to be a concern for marketers when executing Digital Advertising campaigns. What security issues do you find important as it relates to Digital Advertising and how can your knowledge/experience help us at Marketo?

"Although the use of personal data allows marketers to better target and customize their digital ads, keeping the data secure is of utmost importance. In a few of my roles with previous employers, we have continuously worked to monitor our data security measures to ensure we did not lose the trust of our customers. I have worked on task forces that evaluated new policies and technologies available to secure data within our warehouses. This team was responsible for how data was used within and outside the company. My experience working on these teams give me a better understanding of how to test and monitor the security features of Marketo's products before it's released to clients."

Securing the personal data of its customers has been a top concern for many companies. When responding to this question, relay your knowledge of data security as it relates to Digital Advertising. Include any experience you may have working with security-related projects or issues. Before joining its team, Marketo will want to know that you are aware of the security issues companies face when executing Digital Advertising campaigns.

"While working at a variety of companies, I learned how important it is to understand how the stored customer data is being used internally and externally. In addition, when transmitted externally to outside vendors, it is important the transmission is secure to avoid personal customer data being unknowingly shared. Digital Advertising uses vasts amounts of data for the execution and evaluation of campaigns, and I have worked with marketers to ensure that any data sharing is done so with the highest security measures in place. When transmitted externally, I also certified that the partner receiving the data also had high security levels implemented into its system. With my knowledge of security issues, I have no doubt that I will be able to help Marketo continue to offer security measures in its product to put its clients' minds at ease."

At Marketo we look for those with a sincere interest in marketing and advertising. Tell me about your favorite project at the moment.

"At the moment, I am working on a brand development campaign for a not-for-profit organization. This project is very exciting for me because it blends my two passions - marketing and volunteerism. I think everyone should become involved in their community as much as possible and it's exciting when you can use your professional skill set to do so. I understand that your organization takes on a variety of clients in not-for-profit, as well. I would love to learn more about those projects!"

The interviewer would like further insight into the types of projects that you find the most interesting, and rewarding. Briefly discuss the most exciting project that you have on the go. Explain a bit about the project, and why it is so interesting to you. If possible, compare this project to some of the projects that Marketo works on.

"I often have multiple projects on the go that are very interesting and exciting. At the moment, I am revamping the online presence for a small sized toy company. It's been a lot of fun because they are allowing me to exercise my creativity, with a significant budget as well."

What do you know about our clients at Marketo?

"From the research that I have conducted, it appears that the bulk of your clients are within the consumer services sector. It is apparent, after reading through your website and online reviews, that you have a strong client base and a very faithful client following. I would love to learn more about your biggest clients and the work you do for them."

Getting to know Marketo before your interview is a very important step. In addition to reviewing the company history, you also want to have a good understanding of who Marketo services, collaborates with, and does the bulk of their business with. A thorough read through their website, online reviews, and a Google search can tell you a lot.

"I understand that the majority of your client are owners of small to medium business"

Which email marketing platforms have you worked with in the past and which is your favorite?

"Although I am aware of many of the email marketing platforms currently available, I have experience working with Drip and Constant Contact. Although Constant Contact is one of the most well-known platforms, I find that Drip offers more powerful intelligent tools that allow users to make more strategic communication decisions when it comes to segmentation and automation. "

By sharing your experience with email marketing platforms (also called ESP - Email Service Providers), hiring managers will get to know your knowledge of the competition and overall industry. Selecting a 'favorite' platform will let them know which aspects you find important when evaluating an email marketing platform. "My experience with email marketing platforms has been primarily with Constant Contact, but I am familiar with several others including Drip, ConvertKit and MailChimp. I have enough knowledge with these tools to understand that each of them have their pro's and con's. For example, MailChimp has excellent support which may come in handy when dealing with the language they use which is less than straightforward. ConvertKit makes segmentation easy for users, but its automation workflow capabilities are limited compared to other platforms."

To be a valuable contributor to the product development process at Marketo, team members need to keep up with the evolving social media trends. How do you plan to do so if hired by Marketo?

"As a fairly regular user of Facebook and Instagram, I am able to remain updated on new features of these social media platforms. Any other updates I may have missed I learn about through industry news feeds I subscribe to. Once I learn about them through online resources, I visit the platforms to test out the new features. In doing so, I try to view it from a personal and business perspective to better understand how the changes affect different types of users. Any overall industry updates I learn about through online forums that I check regularly. I have a great interest in the social media industry, and therefore am proactive about remaining informed about technological advances in tools and platforms. My knowledge will be an asset to the product development process at Marketo."

To gain a deep understanding of the social media industry, it is important to familiarize yourself with the social media platforms available - particularly the most popular ones such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Most likely this would require that you be a user of these platforms whether in a social or professional capacity. Talk about your familiarity and experience with some of the social media platforms available. Because I am a frequent user, I am able to learn from my social media connections about new platform features and capabilities. I believe being a user is the best way to understand these platforms and to strategically build new products plans that complement them from a marketing perspective. In addition, I subscribe to many online social media newsletters that share upcoming trends in the industry and am diligent about setting aside time weekly to review the news. Over the years, I have also expanded my professional network of industry experts. My knowledge and user experience provide a strong foundation from which I can provide valuable insight to product development projects at Marketo."

The technology available to Digital Advertising campaign managers is constantly changing and improving. How do you remain current with the changing industry?

"From my experience in the Digital Advertising industry, I have witnessed the many technological changes and improvements that have benefited marketers. I understand that to get a full picture of the industry climate, you have to go outside the company's walls. I belong to several industry professional groups online where I am informed of seminars and training sessions as it relates to Digital Advertising technology. The information I acquire from these gatherings has been valuable as I implement my learnings into my job responsibilities and share with other team members within the company."

"Recently email marketing automation has increased in importance for companies as they look to streamline the process of communicating to their customers and prospects. Email marketing automation tools help them have the right message ready to send at the click of a button, allowing them to communicate in a timely manner. I have worked with companies to improve their email marketing automation processes. Through my experiences, I have learned ways to improve automation tools to better meet the communication needs of companies. I have gained much knowledge in using data analytics to improve email marketing automation processes and tools."

"I have experience managing the launch of Hubspot Marketing at the last company for which I worked. The Marketing team in our company had chosen to use this Marketing Automation platform for the management of its marketing campaigns and I was tasked with the technical implementation. Based on my observations, Hubspot Marketing helped the Marketing team plan for and launch integrated campaigns in an organized and efficient manner, allowing for customized messages based on the target population. The interface also makes it user friendly allowing new users to be trained quickly. Based on my knowledge and experience of these types of platforms, there seem to be opportunities to develop the analytical and AI capabilities to help marketers make smarter decisions."

Having some knowledge or experience with Marketing Automation tools offered by other companies helps team members have a better understand of Marketo's position in the marketplace. Awareness of industry players' competitive advantages as well as market opportunities will help Marketo position itself to increase its market share.Talk about your experience with Marketing Automation tools or platforms, whether as a user or a developer. "Although I have not worked directly with Marketing Automation platforms or tools from a technical perspective, I am aware of some of the major players in the industry. Marketo has become a successful competitor, offering a tool that is user friendly and covers all of a marketer's digital marketing needs at different stages of the customer relationship development process. My technical background tells me that Marketo offers a platform that is easily integratable into most companies' systems as it works with Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, among many others. User friendliness and the expansion of digital marketing capabilities seem to be two areas that Marketing Automation companies are continually expanding on. I believe that analytics and tracking of marketing campaigns needs continual improvement and is an area that Marketo could concentrate its product efforts on."

Tell me about your greatest work accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating University as an honors student while still working full time in a related field. I was top of my class, and working full time. This showed me that I am able to dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and be recognized for my dedication."

Talking about your greatest accomplishment will give the interviewer a strong idea of where you place your values. It will also show the interviewer more about your personality, how you like to be motivated, and how to coach you in the future. It is okay to brag a little bit when answering this question. "Through my previous two developer positions, I had the opportunity to learn and work on social media messaging tools. As a developer, I used client feedback to improve these tools and develop new capabilities. I was able to witness firsthand how marketers were able to target their marketing communications to the appropriate populations, thereby allowing for a higher return on their marketing spends. Some issues I have dealt with in the troubleshooting phase of development include the collection of data from these social media messaging apps."

Social media messaging allows marketers to more easily connect with their audience, because they are meeting them where they 'hang out'. This is particularly true with the younger population. It is important for Marketo to offer tools that will allow its clients to easily create and deliver social media messages.Any experience you may have working on these types of apps will be helpful in developing Marketo's social media messaging tools, whether as a developer or in a different capacity. "In my previous developer roles, I have not had the opportunity to work with social media messaging tools. "Based on my experience working in different technical departments over the years, I know there is a wide variety of skills people with a technical background can have. Once the needs are clearly defined, technical team members would be matched up to tasks based on their skill set and past experience. There would be some difficulty balancing skills and experience with interests. We may be faced with situations where the needs of the project will have to override the personal interests of the individual. I believe we can reach a level of compromise where, team members can work collaboratively with others on different tasks but they would still have a main task for which they are responsible."
