"I have used a variety of team-based messaging applications. I am best versed in Slack and Freedcamp. No matter which system you use I am sure that I can pick it up very quickly."

There are many options for communication software and messaging applications. Give the interviewer a brief overview of the apps you are experienced in and assure them that you can learn their internal system, should it be new to you.

"Although I have not worked with a team based messaging application, I am confident that I would learn very quickly. Which team based messaging apps do you use at LinkedIn? I would love to get a head start and begin learning."

How would you rate your performance in this interview so far?

"I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

The interviewer would like to know if you are satisfied with your interview performance. If your interview were a flop, you would know, and it's much better to address outright your performance than try to sweep it under the rug. If you feel that your performance in the interview is going well: 'I believe that this interview has been quite informative and I am happy with my performance. Is there anything that I can clarify for you from this conversation?'If you feel that your performance in the interview is not going well: "I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

"I feel confident about our discussion today and am looking forward to the next steps in the interview process."

"I cannot be the judge of my performance, but at the same time, I believe I have done my best and feel confident enough to have answered all your questions in the manner it was expected of me. If there is anything I could add or clarify I'd be happy to do so."

Tell me about your learning style and study patterns.

"As a student, I was always on the move. If I could listen to an audiobook while running on the treadmill, I could nail the book review the following day. I have a high amount of energy which lends itself well to my energetic management style."

The interviewer would like to know more about your learning methods and level of discipline. Thinking back to your education, high-school or post-secondary, how did you ensure that your work was completed thoroughly and on time? - Perhaps you are a visual learner who utilized images to recall information. - Some students prefer to listen to music while studying - Researchers know that some students are kinesthetic learners, better-committing data to memory when they move or use hands-on tools. - Flashcards and charts work well for students who think more logically. - Studying in a group, or a social setting is helpful for some; while, it may hinder others.

"I am very much a visual learner. While completing my Software Engineering degree, I watched a lot of online tutorials, for instance. This method helped me to commit particular steps to memory. For example, this method of studying helped me a great deal when learning advanced Python techniques. I was a diligent student."

"I learn a lot by researching and actually doing things. When I opened my own online business company I didn't know everything and the only person I could rely on was myself. So when my client requested a specific feature to be implemented on their website I had to research it first, what it is and how it works on the website. Then I went ahead and implemented the feature, learning all about it as I went along. As a result, I learned something new that I used multiple times in my future projects."

What is the riskiest decision you have ever made in the workplace?

"The riskiest decision I ever made was to leave the typical corporate world to move into software development, as a consultant. The risk meant that if I were unsuccessful, I would be looking for a new job in a plodding economy. The pay off would be that I could work with clients of my choosing. I made a great career for myself for the next eight years, which has brought me here today - with an exceptional opportunity in front of me."

LinkedIn believes in taking smart risks, and now the interviewer wants to know how you handle making risky decisions. As a successful professional, you know to calculate risk in your industry. Tell the interviewer about a work-related risk you have taken and what the outcome was. Start with an overview of the decision you needed to make, and explain why it was risky. Describe who the situation affected, as well as the possible outcomes. Complete your answer by sharing how the decision paid off, or by mentioning any recognition you received for your success.

"The riskiest career choice I have made was asking for a reduction in hours, from full time to part time employment, to pursue my Software Engineering degree. My boss could have let me go, but he didn't. He openly supported my pursuit of higher education."

"The riskiest decision was changing one project to another. While feeling very confident, with a prospect of climbing a career ladder I chose to leave all that behind by changing the team that worked on one project to a team that worked on a project that had no career path, was very complicated and very different from everything I had done before. I didn't know if I fit in, if I do well, but at the same time, it was an intelligent risk I had to take because the nature of the project overweighs all my concerns. I was highly fascinated by it and wanted to be part of it. As a result, although I took a risk, I have gained so much more."

"As a visible minority myself, I make a conscious effort to include others in learning about my unique culture. Also, I am broad-minded with it comes to the needs and differences of others. Diversity to me is not simply a matter of culture but also of gender identity, age, and more. I am conscious of being sensitive to others in every action that I take in the workplace."

At LinkedIn, we greatly value teamwork. Have you ever worked in a cross-functional environment?

"Exposure to cross-functional teamwork in my current position is widespread. I believe that when expectations are communicated clearly from the beginning, a cross-functional team project can be very successful. I go into these types of projects with an understanding that everyone has their strengths and limitations based on their expertise and job function."

If you work for a larger company, you may have been asked to work on a project with teams from another department. Your ability to work with cross-functional teams will be a significant asset to LinkedIn, considering they are a billion dollar company. Maybe you headed a project which required you to collaborate with the members of the software engineering and marketing teams. You may have had the opportunity to organize a volunteer activity or team building exercise, company-wide. Share any challenges that came up and what you learned from the experience.

"The organization which I currently work for is highly collaborative. We are a funnel focused organization, so we have our Corporate office, our Business Development Department, Account Based Department, and also our Call Center. Goals are clear, and we all understand how each department works to complement the other."

What would you gain from working at LinkedIn?

"I would like to join LinkedIn because you have a reputation for teaching your employees how to work well within a billion-dollar business while being part of a fun, lively community. The training at LinkedIn, particularly as a Software Developer, is of interest to me because I will learn how to properly troubleshoot online issues while bringing my creative side to life with code, as well."

There are a million things to gain from working at LinkedIn, including incredible training, a great brand on your resume, fun perks, and competitive wages. Talk to the interviewer about your reasons for wanting to work for LinkedIn, specifically. With all of the online competitors out there - why them? Be as specific as possible.

"LinkedIn has been on my radar for some time now. Specifically, I believe that you value your employees, and their professional growth when it comes to knowledge in the technology industry. These are important factors for me in my next opportunity."

What questions do you have for me?

"I would like to ask if there is anything in my background on which you need clarification? Also, after discussing everything today, is there any particular reason why I would not be the best fit for this role?"

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the LinkedIn website and other online resources to ensure the queries you have are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of items you could have found the answers for from merely watching a video on their website! Here are some sample questions: - When would you like to have this position filled? - How long has this role been vacant? - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role? - What is your favorite part about working for LinkedIn? - What is LinkedIn's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months? - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you? - What do you see as the most significant change in tech over the past three years? - Is there any reason why you would not hire me?

"Thank you for asking! A couple of questions come to mind. What do you see as the biggest challenge LinkedIn will be facing in the next 12 months? Also, what is your employee turnover rate, and could you tell me a bit about the diversity and inclusion plan you have in place, at this specific location?"

We want to hire people at LinkedIn who have the desire to lead others. When do you best demonstrate yourself as a leader?

"I best demonstrate myself as a leader when I know that a coworker could use my assistance. I seem to be a natural teacher and mentor which means that when someone is struggling, my first instinct is to train them. Just recently, I coached a new employee on a sales technique that helped her to achieve her quota for the first time. I am excited for further leadership opportunities with LinkedIn."

The interviewer wants to know that you are confident about your leadership abilities and that you understand when your leadership abilities have been most useful.Perhaps you best demonstrate yourself as a leader when your manager is away. Maybe you often jump into a leadership mindset when a co-worker is struggling. Think about a recent time when an employee on your team was victorious at something because of your leadership skills. Discuss the scenario and how your leadership skills made the difference.

"I feel as though I rise to the occasion whenever it presents itself, whether that's by stepping into a leadership role in a collaborative cross-department project, when my boss is away, or when a new hire is wide-eyed and without direction. Whenever the group is lacking a leader, I love the opportunity to step in and help the team along with a bit of an opportunity to shine."

What does greatness, and success, mean to you?

"To me, greatness and success means achieving the goals that you set for yourself. I know the sense of accomplishment when I can make that work, and it makes me feel like I am on top of the world."

This question is a discovery-based inquiry, genuinely focused on how you think versus what you do. Go with your initial instinct when it comes to how you define success and greatness. There is no right or wrong answer, but do give a reply that is insightful and well thought out.

"To me, success comes when you accomplish a goal, and that needs to be something specific that you have your eyes set on. I often encourage my team to set specific goals for themselves. Second, greatness ties into that because without believing that you are great, you will not likely succeed and meet your goals!"

How do you keep up-to-date on new technologies and trends in this industry?

"I keep up to date on new technologies and trends through a variety of sources. I follow a variety of blogs from industry leaders like LinkedIn of course, as well as read multiple articles online per week. Many of the articles that I come across are from LinkedIn and Harvard Business Review."

One way that a potential employer will gauge 'fit' is by ensuring that you are passionate about your particular industry. Show the interviewer that you are excited about the tech industry by openly discussing how you stay on top of trends related to LinkedIn and what they do.

"I keep up on new trends in this industry by taking additional coursework online, whenever possible. I love the courses that LinkedIn offers online, and have taken three of those so far. I also follow a few of my favorite influencers on social media such as Elon Musk and Matt Cutts."

What do you think you will like about this role with LinkedIn?

"I look forward to helping companies and top employers by analyzing data that will help them make solid decisions surrounding their digital future. I am also excited to work for a company that embraces community, and ethical approach, and diversity and inclusion initiatives. I believe I will feel very 'at home' here in the LinkedIn community."

At LinkedIn we seek to hire leaders. Tell me about a time when you took the initiative to improve work related procedures.

"In my previous role, I recognized that our team needed a training program to bring others in at a quicker rate. I took the initiative to create the training program, playbook and schedule, incorporating all the work we did in a way that people could easily replicate. The team loved having it, and more so, enjoyed having others, fully trained, join us quickly."

Have you ever taken the opportunity to present your employer with potential change? Talk to the hiring manager about a time when you took the initiative in the workplace.

"I recently made suggestions to my manager about the team messaging application we were using. I found a team based app that offered a lower monthly cost, with added features. He took the suggestion, and it has worked well for our team! The company was happy with the cost savings as well."

We encourage innovation at LinkedIn. What does innovation mean to you?

"I agree with LinkedIn's values, and believe that innovation comes from demanding excellence and taking intelligent risks. Also, when you have fun with what you do, you can be at your most innovative. In a nutshell, innovation - to me - means looking at things differently than expected."

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I like to go the extra mile, and I am a bit of a perfectionist, especially when it comes to delivering far above what my customers expect. I believe my personality will work very well with the innovative and team-based culture here at LinkedIn."

"I have a personality of helpfulness, cheerfulness, and a willingness to try new things. I will jump into a situation and learn on the spot, and also enjoy taking on new challenges that include problem-solving and innovative thinking."

At LinkedIn we prefer to hire those with an education in computer science or another related field. Walk me through your post-secondary education and training.

"I completed my Bachelor of Applied Technology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. During that time I specialized in Data Management and Analysis. I graduated with a 3.99 GPA, top in my class."

LinkedIn values post-secondary education, so they generally ask for a degree plus in-depth knowledge in your area of expertise, for most technical roles. The interviewer will already have an idea of your education background from your resume. What they are asking is for you to take a few minutes to bring the experience to life for them! What was your major? Did you receive any special academic recognition? Discuss the strengths gained during your post-secondary training and how those skills will be put to use in your new position with LinkedIn.

"I recently completed my Diploma in Information Technology. I also have a great deal of on the job training and certifications, all listed on my resume. One of the biggest take-away's from my post-secondary experience was learning how to manage my time while working on multiple projects successfully. I perfected my multi-tasking skills and am excited to bring those to work for LinkedIn."

Who is the smartest person you know? Explain your answer.

"To me, the smartest person I know is the author, Brene Brown. She has such unique concepts, and I have never seen anyone be able to dissect and analyze statistics quite like her. She's brilliant. Who do you feel is the smartest person you know?"

You can have fun with this question and choose a family member, friend, mentor, author, or celebrity. Just be sure that you can back your answer! If you can relate your response to an influencer in your industry, that's the best way to approach this question. A great way to keep this conversation going would be to ask the interviewer the same matter in the end.

"I gain much of my influence, as a person immersed in the online and tech world, from Neil Patel. He was making a splash in the entrepreneurial and marketing space before he even hit 30 and President Obama even recognized his work. I admire his ability to take chances at a young age, and I always try to apply that same type of drive in my career."

"I do not have a particular person in mind that I find to be the smartest. There are many exceptionally smart people alive out there and those who passed. I learn from all of them. However, if to name one person I am fascinated with it would be Stephen Hawkings, simply because I like Astrophysics so much and believe the scientific papers that man wrote are highly fascinated. Just to imagine what that man went through, pain, despair, depression, and yet he emerged as one of the greatest minds ever lived. He is, as most of us know, the greatest physicist since Einstein, though in one of the interviews he did reply, "Rubbish, it's a mere media hype"."

If you could start your career over again, what direction would you take?

"I certainly do not regret the direction I have taken my career; however, if I had to start over in a new direction completely I would likely pursue my Degree in Education and become a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers, and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy coaching and leading others so, any tasks in my current career that related to these skills, are very welcome."

A hiring manager will be able to tell a lot about your personality by learning about your other career interests. If you could do anything over, what would you do, and why?

"I am delighted with the direction my career has taken. If I could change anything I would perhaps have furthered my education to include a unique tech focus such as cybersecurity; however, I have no regrets!"

At LinkedIn we value organization. Tell us about a time when you were particularly effective on prioritizing tasks and completing a project on schedule.

"I am a naturally organized individual. Without proper organization, a project can get out of hand quite quickly. I was recently involved with a project that required 30 hours of my time in a two week period while I was also in the middle of several other projects. I was able to stay on track with visual reminders, mid-day check-ins, and a strong support team. I ended up working some overtime, but that is par for the course in project management!"

An interviewer needs to hear that you have a plan in place to keep yourself organized. The interviewer wants to evaluate your time management skills, and diligence when faced with prioritization. Start off by mentioning that you are typically an organized person. From here, dive into a recent time-consuming project for which you were involved.

"We recently took on a revamp project updating our software to streamline our work better. With this, on top of the high demands of our day to day roles, we had to master the art of prioritizing to get the new software launched on time. We did what needed to be done. If that meant multitasking or putting in extra hours, we made it happen."

Working at LinkedIn, you will experience changes on a regular basis. When have you had to change a significant component of your project due to new information being presented?

"Last year we saw new federal regulations come through which affected 80% of our ongoing projects. We had to adjust our plans quickly; however, we were able to deliver a timely product that met federal regulations."

Being able to swivel the focus of your project is a necessary skill for your success in most careers. Talk to the interviewer about a time when a significant change occurred on a project. How did you handle the implementation of the new information?

"I have experience with computers crashing and deleting all of my work, and I know how much time is lost when this happens. If some unforeseen issue pops up, I will be sure to communicate with my manager and try to work hard to make up lost time."

Tell me about your greatest work related accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating University as an honors student while still working full time. I was top of my class, and working full time. This accomplishment showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and see recognition for my dedication."

Talking about your most significant accomplishment will give the interviewer a firm idea of where you place your values. It will also show the interviewer more about your personality, how you like to be motivated, and how to coach you in the future. It is okay to brag a little bit when answering this question. Show that you are proud of yourself and your career accomplishments!

"My greatest work-related accomplishment was the management promotion I received at Indeed after just one year. I worked very hard for that promotion and was so happy when my work and dedication was rewarded. It kick-started my career in the technology and job board management space."

I would like to have a full understanding of your experience and portfolio. What types of industries have your previous projects been involved in?

"I have experience in a wide range of industries including healthcare, automotive, and education. Most notably, I have worked with organizations similar to yours including Glassdoor and Indeed."

The software and technology industry is all-encompassing, and it is essential for the interviewer to have a full understanding of the sectors and types of projects in which you bring experience. Be sure to highlight any projects or clients mainly related to LinkedIn as that may pique the interviewer's interest!

"A great alternative to explaining your projects is to bring a substantial portfolio with you. "I wanted to show you a full range of my experience, so I have brought you a digital portfolio of my work. Would you like to take a look?"

We consider research to be the backbone of what we do at LinkedIn. Do you think it's important to conduct research before beginning a project or would you rather jump right in?

"I agree that research is the backbone of a strong project. Without it, important details are missed and much time is wasted. I like to research before starting a project so that I can lay out a plan and understand the potential hurdles as well."

Talk to the interviewer about your work habits and the way in which you prefer to approach a new project. If you have a sense of how LinkedIn prefers to approach their work you should discuss that method. For instance, if the interviewer tells you that they prefer extensive research before beginning a project, that is your queue to talk about your excellent research skills.

"Although there are some instances where jumping right it may be required, I always prefer to research before I being a project. Rest assured; I would always follow your preferred methods, should I be hired."

At LinkedIn we take privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Are you willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, if hired?

"I have signed non-disclosure agreements in the past; although I am not currently under one. I see the importance of agreements such as this and am most willing to comply."

Signing a non-disclosure agreement is quite common in the software and technology industry. LinkedIn holds a lot of private information on their members, making a lot of the information you may be privy to, highly sensitive. If hired, you will likely become privy to trade secrets, pending patents, and other innovative projects that must remain confidential. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to sign an agreement. If you are currently under non-disclosure or non-compete agreement with your present employer, now is the time to discuss that.

"I am happy to review any privacy and confidentiality agreements that you have."

Looking at our products and services, what do you think we do better at LinkedIn than any of our competitors?

"When I was preparing for this interview I noticed that LinkedIn is very innovative when it comes to offering a wide range of tools and resources for your members. Your learning portal alone is unbeatable. You are a trailblazer in the online learning and professional growth arena, which is amazing."

"I believe the best way to stay ahead of your competitors is to pay a big amount of attention to the fine details, and the user interface. When you put out a great product, others will try to mimic your work, but they will cut corners because they will feel rushed to get it out on the marketplace first. I will contribute to the success of LinkedIn by committing my most attentive work to you every day."

LinkedIn has some competition when it comes to specific areas of business such as job posting, being a career content aggregator, and even as a social network. However; few companies can do what the LinkedIn platform is doing as a whole.Focusing primarily on the job search and job postings portal, which is where much of LinkedIn's profits come from, their fiercest competitors may be Indeed, Zip Recruiter, Monster, and Glassdoor. Perform some research to find out what LinkedIn does best, and who is trying to do it better. Speak openly with the interviewer about your ability to work competitively and how you plan to contribute to their continued success.

"I think that the best way to stay ahead of competitors is to keep your products as simple as possible while remaining innovative. People want simple, easy interfaces, and mobile apps which they can easily navigate. What I've seen from competitors lately is that they overcomplicate their offering. I create clean and consistent work that your members will appreciate."

Tell me about the most interesting project you have worked on this year and the biggest thing you learned from it.

"In my previous role we were working on a variety of projects with fingerprint recognition software. One of the most interesting projects was a fingerprint-based ATM system. It was a test project for a large banking institution. In addition to learning a great deal about fingerprint recognition, I was also able to learn a lot about the critical relationship between software and security."

The interviewer at LinkedIn would like to understand better the types of topics, and level of projects, you have been involved in, in the past. Discuss with the interviewer one of your recent projects that particularly piqued your interest. Did it stretch you professionally? What was the biggest takeaway for you from that particular project?

"I find the majority of the projects that I have been working on this past year to be very interesting. If I had to choose one, I would choose to work on the Uber app. Since I am still in my internship, I didn't have any major contributions; however, I learned a lot about on-demand apps and building a friendly user interface."

In your opinion, what has been the biggest advancement in job search technology this past year?

"There were many great advancements in job search and social technology this year. Recently, I was reading an article on the changes made to the LinkedIn platform this year. The one that stood out most to me was the new ability to show your LinkedIn Quick Response (QR) code to someone, allowing them to scan it from their LinkedIn mobile app and connect to your profile immediately. It's so easy and simple to connect to the right people these days, and it's truly changing how we hire, meet people and a land new opportunities."

LinkedIn is one of the world's biggest online social networks, used for professional networking, employer job postings, and tools for job seekers. Display to the interviewer that you have an invested interest in the employment tools and technology industry by discussing your thoughts on recent advancements. Be sure to include how you stay up to date on industry changes and new technology.
