"In the workplace, I prefer straightforward rules and expectations. Once I am comfortable with my knowledge base, I can start thinking outside the box. So - to answer your question - I would say I bring a healthy balance of both."

The interviewer is looking for insights into your working style to understand whether it will complement their environment. Most organizations prefer to hire resourceful candidates who exhibit outside-the-box thinking and can apply creative thinking as needed but follow protocol and guidelines. Assure the interviewer that you, as an individual can achieve both. They want to know if you have a propensity to think fast on your feet or are easily discouraged without regimented guidance.

When it comes to Insurance, would you rather work face-to-face with clients or in the background in a research and analysis based role?

"I am more of an analyst type and prefer to be in the background, making the numbers happen. With that said, I am still a people person and would always put my best face forward in any customer-facing situation."

Talk to the interviewer about your preference around number crunching vs. customer-facing. This question hopes to discern whether you are an extrovert or an introvert. A research and analysis-based role is solitary work, whereas working face to face with clients is more interpersonal, collaborative, and team-oriented. They're looking for candidates with analytical skills who also have an interpersonal approach, striking a balance between both spheres. Don't classify yourself as one or the other unless it's genuinely the case. Put self-evaluative thought into your answer rather than trying to rush through it.

"I am more of a face-to-face communicator. I love being in the buzz of it all and thrive in customer-facing situations. I am also able to work in the background when needed."

"I really enjoy both aspects. But, being face to face with the customer gives me an opportunity to get a true feeling of what they are experiencing."

Tell me about a time you couldn’t meet a deadline. How did you handle it?

"I was spearheading two separate projects and took on a third, convinced I could deliver all three of them on time. This third project was very involved, more so than I expected, and it slowed me down. The deadline approached, and the first two projects were close to being done, but the third was only halfway there. I realized I would either miss all three deadlines or just one if I abandoned the third project and reprioritized the first two. I passed off the third project. I thought I could do anything, but I realized it was better to do a few things well than more at a lower quality of work. Since then, I'm conscientious in striking a balance between over-performing versus biting off more than I can chew. One needs to know their limits."

Refrain from deflecting blame or offering excuses or examples that resulted in disciplinary action. This question assesses your capacity to take responsibility for your actions and what you tend to learn from your mistakes. Include the impact it had on the business or project and your professional development moving forward.

"When I was estimating for a Remediation Co. I was assigned a large property in the Historic District. Being in the Historic District I knew there would be county guidelines to be followed. It was a huge home with massive damage to the interior and exterior. I was given 4 weeks to prepare my estimate. I immediately began by researching the legalities of zoning and the specific product needed for repairs. I met with engineers and contractors. Applied for planning and zoning reviews, however, when the deadline came I was not complete as I was waiting for engineer reports. Luckily I was granted an extension of two weeks and did complete the estimate."

Tell us about a time you had to work with a difficult person.

"I prioritized my studies and stopped covering a co-worker's shifts. When I prioritized my studies over their needs, they stopped being nice to me. Their attitude took on a negative tone. Soon, I noticed they weren't being all that nice to anyone. That kind of negativity can be toxic and contagious. I found it challenging. I smile a lot, and sometimes it felt like a strain to keep smiling and having a good time around that energy. But I kept smiling anyway. Sometimes they'd realize they were the only ones not having a good time, and they'd ramp up their drama. It was certainly a challenge working closely with them at times, but you cannot internalize another person's emotions as your own. Just stay true to yourself."

Strong interpersonal and communication skills combined with emotional maturity are traits of strong leadership. Team collaboration broadly enhances work relations. Investing time in building stronger collaborative work relationships, especially with those who take more effort to get on the same page, makes for a much stronger team. Proceed with caution when navigating this question. Consistency is of value here. This question goes deeper than working with a challenging co-worker. The interviewer wants to determine how easy you are to work with. Providing examples of multiple difficult co-workers will probably betray your narrative. Expressing that you've worked with several difficult coworkers could insinuate you were, in fact, the problem employee.

"As an Adjuster we deal with many personalities. Many homeowners are defensive and difficult as soon as you meet with them. I try to understand they are going through a very confusing process and feel vulnerable due to the loss. Showing empathy and mirroring their emotions seems to calm them as they feel I understand their situation."

What is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness?

"I think my greatest strength is my eagerness to please, but my greatest weakness is not being able to say no. In the past, I've bitten off more than I can chew and struggled with how to communicate 'no.' Since then, I learned that not communicating what's possible within my well-managed time and taking on more than I can handle will lead me to underperform. I've gotten a handle on this. But being a people person who is not easily offended and rarely takes things personally, saying no can be hard for me. This trait is a strength and weakness. I'm learning how to strike a harmonious balance between the two."

How you answer this question will give the interviewer insight into your self-awareness and how you identify your merits and growth opportunities. Provide the personal strengths that make you an excellent candidate and explain how they'll aid your success in this role. "One of my greatest strengths is I am self-motivated and aware of time management. A weakness is I am a "type A" personality and will often take on additional workloads that may set me behind. My method to manage this is to pause and evaluate my own workload to see if I can assist, or guide my co-worker as to how to fit the task in."

When have you shown great integrity at work?

"In my last position, I was responsible for the cash deposit every day. There was never a discrepancy in the four years I worked there. I best show my integrity by being a consistently reliable employee."

It's natural for honest individuals to expect everybody else to be honest like them. This is no different from when an untrustworthy person assumes everybody is attempting to subvert them. The objective here is to suggest integrity as intrinsic to your makeup and everyday practice. Communicate your answer with composure.

"I show integrity at work all of the time. It's incredibly important to consistently show excellence through integrity. In the workplace, I show integrity by keeping my promises, earning and keeping the trust of my colleagues, and avoiding all workplace gossip."

"I try to consistently show integrity, because it's a matter of honesty. I know of some representatives that offer phones with rebates or accessories, just to make a sale, or saying there is a money-back guarantee when there isn't. I just present the value as it is and as it pertains to my customer's life."

"Working for a Restoration company I was to meet an Insured at their home which had water loss from a pipe break. When I arrived I notice them dragging a water hose out the back door. When I inspected the loss I could tell there was additional water at the base of the cabinets that could not have been from the pipe break the day before. I did not discuss my observation with the homeowner. I complete my inspection but did tell my supervisor what I witness and that we would not accept this job."

Do you think honesty is always the best policy?

"Sometimes full disclosure can damage someone's self-esteem, and reality isn't always best expressed in full and can be self-indulgent based on the person's intention. In those instances, honesty isn't always the best policy."

This question aims to evaluate your self-perception and integrity. This question is about the nuances and logistics of situational honesty. Focus your answer on perception and intentions. "I feel that honesty is the best policy so long as the honest comment is not intended to be hurtful."

"Honestly is always the best and only policy. You can probably get by the other way and maybe even be successful for a bit, but it will likely come back to haunt you. I have two daughters now and a wife, and raising my kids with integrity is paramount to me and it starts with me."

What causes you to feel dissatisfied on the job?

"I can feel dissatisfaction on the job when I am not feeling heard or when there is no mutual respect among team members. I work best in more harmonious situations with little drama or gossip."

There are several approaches you could take to this question. You could name something that you'll likely not encounter at Liberty Mutual and offer that as a reason for pursuing this opportunity with them. "We all like to be recognized for our accomplishments right? I think that Title promotions for repeating accomplishments is great. Also, travel, as I want my family to be able to see new places and cultures. To be singled out publicly as an achiever is great as well."

How would you describe your relationship with your customers or clients?

"My customer and client relationships are best described as open and honest. I believe the more upfront and transparent you are with your clients, the more likely they are to return. I value my clients and nurture those relationships as much as possible."

"I think that I work best where I have a clearly defined objective; there is a proven methodology for obtaining that objective and quantifiable steps in the methodology. If I have these tools and I can differ to colleagues and leadership to fill in the gaps, I can work very well independently. At that point, it's just about effort."

"As you can see on my resume, I have strong tenure with my previous employers. I would love to find a long-term home where I can naturally grow. Over the next five years, I would love to be promoted within Liberty Mutual as I prove my strengths and abilities."

Your answer will inform the interviewer of your ambition and the direction of your career. Showing that you've created and periodically adjust your five-year career plan will present you as someone who's taken charge of their career. Tell me about an error or mistake you made because of a breakdown in communication from you or one of your team members.

"A supervisor passed a project onto me and said they needed it back by the end of the day. They were carrying on several conversations simultaneously and were distracted and stressed. They hurriedly asked me if I understood or had any questions and rushed off. So I set every other project aside, including two that were nearly wrapped up and also due by the end of the day. I then spent all day working on this new project and delivered it at the end of my shift. But when I did, they looked confused and asked me what I was giving them. I reminded them, proud of my work. Then they explained, with frustration, that it was due by the end of the day next Friday, not by the end of the day today. They then asked me where the other two projects were, and I explained I'd set them aside. This triggered a pretty severe reaction. Everyone was already leaving for the day, and this supervisor was frustrated that we both had to stay late until we completed those other two projects. I was frustrated and upset but smiled and got back to work. It only took another hour and a half to finish those other two projects on my own. I blamed myself. The supervisor asked me if I had any questions, and I normally mirror these things when communicating to ensure we're on the same page. I knew this supervisor wasn't the best communicator, but on this occasion, I was timid and too eager to please, so I just moved forward with the work. I've since worked on adapting my communication style to others, and as a practice, consistently mirror to make sure the message sent is the message that's received."

There is an old expression in leadership surrounding communication: 'A message sent is a message received.' This saying highlights the individual responsible for communicating something clearly to others and taking the extra steps to ensure what was said was understood. Often, if someone in leadership inadequately communicates the full scope of the work or the reason it needs to be completed a certain way by a particular deadline, this could lead to misinterpretation. In this case, the misinterpretation is the message received. Consider this when presenting your example. Acknowledging an understanding of this concept and taking the leadership responsibility onto yourself, rather than blaming the person communicating the information, conveys that you strive to be more adaptable to others' communication styles and exhibit leadership potential. Yet, in the end, even though you accept responsibility for your part, you reveal an above-average scope of the big-picture. This perspective sets you up as a desirable candidate.

"I had a manager text me once about a client who was not happy with the results of my work. The wording of the text felt somewhat aggressive. I was on a date with my spouse when I received the text, and it spoiled our evening. I was somewhat upset. I put in my best at all times and felt that the conversation would have been better delivered to me in person. The next day, I approached the manager and requested that future communication of that nature be conducted in person versus text messages that only served to upset my work/life balance. I apologized for my initial defensive reaction."

"I have a customer who is very loyal, but requires a lot of attention. She needed a screen protector replacement, and I was not in the store that day. I asked my friend to process the form based on her account and just have it waiting for her. She had an iPhone 11, and I told him an 11 pro, which is a different size. This was at the end of her eligibility for the free replacement and she wasn't happy about it at all when she realized. After apologizing for the mistake being my own, I used my employee discount and purchased the correct one for her."

How would you describe liability to someone?

"If I were explaining the concept of liability to a customer, I would explain the concept situationally. To suggest that liability means a person might be legally responsible for any expenses when they are at fault sometimes doesn't drive the point home. That's why at the onset of any conversation on this topic, I begin by asking a lot of questions. Once I understand their situation and needs, I can help them identify their needs and the reason behind them."

One's legal responsibility is a definition of liability. Especially in the insurance industry, several basic policies cover the legal expenses surrounding situations where you are liable, or responsible by law, to pay expenses. Communicate this as you would to a potential client. Use this as an opportunity to sell the concept of liability insurance, as you would to a potential client.

"A liability is an obligation. If you are hurt at a store for example it is the store's obligation to remedy any damages to you. Holding them liable."

How do you define empathy?

"I consider myself very empathetic. I take time to listen and contemplate. People want to feel heard, and when you make them feel heard by not interrupting them and validating what they've shared with you, you empathize with them. After you've done this, you'll earn their trust through your responses. This is how I interpret the adage 'the customer is always right,' but I rephrase it as 'the customer is always heard.' When a customer truly feels heard, they'll more readily trust that you are trying to help them."

Empathy means understanding the nature and feelings of another. One aspect of mastering effective communication is being adept at listening, mirroring, and empathizing with another. A customer service experience is rarely positive when lacking empathy. When the interviewer asks you to define empathy, they are asking how empathy fits into your work style, communication style, and approach to the customer experience you deliver.

"Empathy is literally taking on the feelings of another person. Really getting a full understanding of what they are experiencing and mirroring that emotion."

How do you respond to feedback?

"Even though it can be difficult to hear criticism, I always pause before I respond and take time to think about it first. If it catches me by surprise, I usually ask the person to clarify or explain. I want to grow and improve, so the more specific my supervisor can be, the more helpful it is."

Your interviewer wants to assess how proactive you are in receiving feedback. Receiving feedback from a manager or supervisor can be nerve-wracking. Delivering negative feedback in an unprofessional manner is a reflection of that person's mood or outlook and not you. You can't always predict what they may say or how you might feel in response. Your interviewer wants to know if you are easily offended or defensive and how you respond to feedback - constructively or negatively. They are also curious if you take responsibility for your actions or are quick to reassign blame, whether justified or not. Consider this when answering this question.

"I love receiving feedback from my employer because the feedback allows me to better understand where I need to improve."

"I think I respond well to feedback, as it's usually positive and I give it time to consider so that I'm not overly emotional."

Insurance contracts can be detailed and lengthy. How do you help your clients understand their Insurance contract?

"I understand that insurance policies and contracts can appear complicated to my clients. I will walk them through each section before they sign and use simpler terms and analogies when needed. I have often had clients comment on my ability to relay the information to them in an easy-to-understand method."

Freely share your communication style with the interviewer, emphasizing your communication skill level. Display your ability to adapt your communication style to others, especially when relaying complex insurance matters in laymen's terms. Client contracts and policies are likely full of details and difficult-to-understand concepts, especially for the typical layman. Walk the interviewer through your process. I try to be universally sensitive in my approach to all communities. Regardless of my position, personal or professional, I've always been a firm believer that everyone should be able to feel comfortable being their authentic self without judgment or preconception, so I do my best to make everyone around me feel supported, embraced, and heard."

On the most inherently human level, we are all driven by the same basic needs and unifying experiences. "The biggest change I have seen in the Insurance industry, since my start in 1999, has to do with technology. There are many great mobile trends now, including apps that make information simple and easy to access. it's been incredible to see."

"I utilize my work hours very efficiently, so the only time I take my work home is when there is an extremely stringent deadline. I would say that, overall, I take my work home maybe twice per month. It's all about being diligent with your time in the office!"

In your most recent position, what was the size of your client portfolio? Was that manageable for you?

"With my current company, I have a portfolio of $55M, which I grew from $15M when I first started. I am comfortable with this volume but can certainly handle more if required. May I ask what the average Insurance agent's book of business looks like with Liberty Mutual?"

"I can think quickly on the job and respond well to sudden change. Last week I was asked to tweak a presentation with just 30 minutes' notice. The changes were significant, but luckily, I work well under pressure. The presentation went well, and our clients were happy."

Sudden changes will occur in the workplace from time to time. Describe how you take advantage of your time management by always planning for unforeseen circumstances.
