"I have always been an organized person, and since obtaining my Project Management certification, I find that I am even more dedicated to the organization than I had been in the past. My references will tell you that I am very organized as well. Rest assured, I understand the direct correlation between the organization, productivity, and profitability."

Describe a time when you had to sacrifice quality on a project or deliverable.

"I believe in performing at a high level at all times, so sacrificing quality is something I try to avoid at all costs. However, there are times when difficult choices must be made. For example, I worked on a dashboard project last month that was running behind. We knew we had to release the solution without all of the features that were originally in scope. I worked with my fellow engineers to assess the feature list and separate the must-haves from the features that could be included in a follow-up release. Of course, we included anything that had an effect on human safety as a top priority. After that, we elected to include the items that added the most value to our user base given the time we had left.Ultimately, our client was happy with the initial release. They appreciated the way our revised plan reflected a deep understanding of their business and values."

Your KBR interviewer understands constraints and the need to make concessions when developing products. To prepare, identify a time from your professional past in which you intelligently made a quality concession based on need, value, and safety considerations.

"I worked on a missile systems project last year and the budget changed mid-way through the development process. It became clear that we needed to identify a way to save costs on materials. I worked with the engineers on my team to identify opportunities to save that sacrificed quality, while ensuring human safety. We were able to develop a design that met the original requirements while remaining within our revised budget. Our client knew that the system would ultimately need more frequent maintenance and parts replacement, but they understood the tradeoff and were happy with the result."

Innovation is a core aspect of our work here at KBR. Describe a time when you used an innovative approach at work.

"In my current role, one of the administrative teams that support an operations group spent a large number of hours every week chasing people down to answer questions necessary for executive reporting. The thought at the time was that the operations individuals involved didn't understand the process and the easiest way to meet the reporting needs was to ask them questions as needed. I took a step back and looked for the root cause. I spoke with the operations team and they indicated that nobody had ever walked them through the reporting process and they we unclear on how their work fit into it. I set up a series of meetings to walk them through the executive reports and how they are calculated. I also trained them on some of our BI tools that allowed them to look at the numbers for their areas before they were compiled for the executive reports. Taking the time to properly educate them and let them take an active role in the process resulted in a 60% reduction in the time the admins spent chasing down information week-to-week. My clients were grateful I took a think-outside-the-box approach as it led to significant time and cost savings."

Preparing examples of how you have shown innovation at work is helpful for any interview, but it is critical when interviewing with a company like KBR that relies on constant innovation to thrive. "I have worked in a defense product assembly plant for the last two years. I noticed that a lot of time was spent moving certain pieces of equipment around between the various teams in our location. I went to my manager and asked if we could rethink the way we were using the equipment to reduce movement waste. He agreed and we devised a plan to arrange our work so that our team could have the equipment in the morning and the other team could have it in the afternoon. Our change was so successful that the managers of the second shift implemented the same change."

Describe a time you were presented with a complex problem at work. What steps did you take to resolve it?

"I had an engineer on my team that is incredibly intelligent and talented, but he did not enjoy working in teams. He often kept important details to himself and did not engage when he saw his teammates struggling. The manager of his team wasn't addressing the issue and did his best to assign the engineer projects he could work on alone. As an engineering director, I knew this approach was not serving the individual or his teams in the long run. I set up a meeting with the manager and revisited my approach to team culture. We discussed several options for helping the engineer learn to engage more fully with the team and established a plan of action. Additionally, I met with the engineer to let him know I was the one pushing for change and that I saw the potential for him to add a lot of value if he could make a few adjustments. I checked in with the engineer and his manager regularly. It took some time, but the engineer ultimately embraced his role as a subject matter expert. The quality of the work of his team has improved and I genuinely appreciated his willingness to change. I promoted him last year to an architect role and he is thriving."

Your interviewer wants to know if you have what it takes to overcome the likely challenges you will likely face regularly at KBR. It can be helpful to prepare for this question using the STAR method. "I worked on a project last year in which we were rearchitecting a number of services for a legacy system. The decision was made to move to AWS and we experienced a number of performance issues initially. As a senior engineer on the team, several of the junior engineers looked to me for guidance. I developed a strategy to research projects internally and at other companies that experienced similar issues. We divided the work up and our research ultimately led us to a series of fixed that helped get us where we needed to be."

How do you manage your time?

"I will determine which project requires my attention by the number of hours we are behind and then the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require an additional commitment of hours from me. Never have I under delivered on a deadline."

"Time management has been something that I have worked on improving since my time in University. I set goals for myself and attached a time deadline for those goals. Also, I am diligent with the use of my calendar and have a great scheduling app on my phone that I refer to as well."

"It is important for me to manage my time on several levels. I review my team's production schedule and roadmap every week to ensure that we understand our priorities. Likewise, I review everyone's calendars and discuss availability to ensure we have proper coverage. If there are gaps, I make sure to allocate time on my calendar to find replacements or fill the gap myself. On a daily basis, I make a plan first thing in the morning of how to spend my day. I schedule time for large initiatives around meetings and leave time for impromptu discussions or emergency requests. I use tools embedded within my calendar as well as task lists to ensure everything is completed on time. I feel confident a similar approach would work well here at KBR."

Describe a time in which you made an independent decision at work.

"As a systems analyst, I often compile information that is then presented to an audience with a wide range of backgrounds. I noticed when I first joined my current company that some of the stakeholders in our monthly planning meetings were struggling to keep up with the more complicated technical details.I reached out to a few of them independently and met to discuss how they felt about the presentations. I then reworked the presentation template and presented it to the senior analyst on my team. I was careful to show respect for the previous model and let him know I was open to feedback. He was impressed that I took the extra time to reach out to our stakeholders and develop something that could serve the group better. We collaborated on a final template and the stakeholder group loved it when we presented our next update. They stated that they felt they were better educated on the technical details and could make more informed decisions as a result."

"As a senior field engineer, I make independent decisions regularly. For example, I was on-site working on a government facility build-out last week and the design for the area my team was planning to tackle next was not going to work based on some of the previous redline changes made earlier in the week. I instructed my team to continue working on their current tasks while I decided which adjustments we would need to make. I then walked them through the new plan and worked their feedback in and sent the changes back to the home office per our approval process. The changes we made ended up saving us time and money and the GM was pleased with the result."

How would your co-workers describe your attention to detail?

"My co-workers would describe my attention to detail as very strong. As a quality control specialist, they know they can count on me to look over every piece of equipment diligently and identify little issues before they become big problems. For example, I identified several welding issues last week that would have caused major leaks if the product continued to be built in the same manner. The adjustments that were made will keep our end customers safe."

What is your definition of hard work?

"For me, hard work means that I did what I could that day to exceed expectations. I come to work early and stay late if needed and I go over and above the requirements without hesitation."

"I am a great problem solver because I do not allow stress to cloud my judgment and mute my creativity. I am a keen observer with a great memory which allows me to recall unique solutions or ideas. Just last month we were running behind on a job due to weather issues and my management was stressed about the cost implications of the delays. I pulled the supervisors together and we reworked assignments to reduce lag and take advantage of specialization. We stayed calm and maintained a positive attitude in the field. Ultimately, we got everything done on time."

Employers want to know that you have a methodical approach to problem-solving. Consider the skills and qualities that help you successfully face problems. Perhaps you have a keen eye for detail. "I am a great problem solver because I am a meticulous observer and I use my well-developed analytical skills to make improvements. My memory and years in the industry have exposed me to many types of situations and problems, so I feel I have a vast amount of experience to draw from, allowing me to be creative and effective in the way I approach any challenge.For example, I noticed that the directors in my department frequently asked our program managers the same questions in almost every meeting. They wanted updates on particular metrics that I helped prepare as an analyst. I believe in the power of self-service when possible, and I felt like we could improve the quality of the meetings if we provided real-time access to the information. I set up a dashboard, gave them access, and also projected it during our meetings so everyone could see it. The meeting discussion was much richer afterward and the decisions made using the metrics improved. Several of the directors thanked me for taking action on a problem they didn't even see originally."

"When I face any issue, the first thing I do is try to gather all the inputs and information needed from researching and exploring how other people have solved the same issue before to tap into the available resources, which gives me the first insight to build on my effective resolutions. Tell me about a time you handled an incredibly difficult client. How did you come to a resolution with this person?

"Just last week, a customer called our design team because he was unhappy with a particular design we were creating for him. I reassured him that we would modify the design to his liking before finalizing the project. We spoke further and, in the end, he was feeling uncomfortable not being a part of the decision-making every step of the way. With any customer complaint I remain patient, listen to their concerns, and reassure the customer we would do anything within reason to satisfy their requests."

To prepare, break down a difficult client or customer situation you faced using the STAR method. Review what you come up with and ensure the end result was positive and highlights your best customer service skills.

Focus on delivering an answer that is simple and precise. Stay away from long drawn-out stories. Briefly, describe a time when you resolved a customer service issue. Highlight your ability to remain patient and rational.

"I worked in a retail customer care center and had to navigate angry customer experiences more times than I would have liked. People who are upset want to be heard and respected. I would listen, empathize and reassure the customer that I am there to support them and resolve the matter. Communication and reassurance are important throughout the process."

How do you handle stress on the job?

"I handle stress very well, and when you call my references, they will attest to this fact. When I am under pressure on the job, I focus on the task at hand and make sure not to get distracted. Staying on deadline is very helpful, and I will delegate when necessary to alleviate some stress."

Think about your most recent stressful times on the job and the behaviors you demonstrated that helped you deal with the pressure. If your coping skills and attitudes resulted in a positive effect, your prep work is complete. "As a technologist, I am accustomed to working in a dynamic and changing environment with the potential for high levels of stress. I have learned to use a variety of methods to cope. Mostly I focus on maintaining a positive attitude, taking breaks to balance myself as needed, and ensuring that I take care of myself physically."

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their style of communication and emulate it. Sometimes you have to relate to others in their style to be understood."

The best way to prepare is to think through an example from your past in which you demonstrated the ideal approach to handling a communication issue with your manager. "There are times in business when this happens. I make sure I regroup with the supervisor to explain the strain a gap in communication causes on the team. I then go into mending mode, ensuring the information that needs communicating gets disseminated out to the team."

"I currently work with a technical lead that does not always communicate design changes that affect my work. He will collaborate with another engineer and then sometimes forget to consider the downstream implications. I brought up the issue with him and described the amount of rework the communication gap was causing. He agreed it was a problem and asked for my thoughts on how we could improve. I suggested that he send a quick note out about changes as they are decided. That way, the individual engineers could think things through from their perspective and weave any necessary changes into their designs as needed. Our new process is working really well, and he appreciated my willingness to collaborate and address the problem with him directly."

In your opinion, what are the top 3 qualities every professional in this industry should possess?

"I believe that every engineering/construction professional should have strong attention to detail, be a bit of a perfectionist, and be able to multitask. These are all areas of strength for me, and I look forward to bringing these talents to work for KBR, Inc.."

"Before I begin a project, I will map out a project blueprint and timeline. I refer to this timeline on a daily basis to ensure that I am on target. It's an organized technique that has worked incredibly well for me."

"The projects within my current program of responsibility follow various agile and lean methodologies. We use a mix of tools and processes to continually monitor progress, assess opportunities for improvement, and eliminate waste. In combination with continual communication, I use a mix of tools such as product roadmaps and Jira. I am able to know on a day-to-day basis where each of the projects stands, what the plan is for the current day, and how that folds into the bigger picture. "I have taken a variety of coursework related to the construction and engineering industry. In addition to my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, I also have PMI certification. Your interviewer would like to know if you have taken any formal training or gained certification related to the various industries KBR works within. "I am comfortable working in XYZ environment. I have worked on similar projects in the past and I adapt easily."

Many KBR employees work onsite in less-than-favorable conditions. Candidates frequently report being asked about how they feel about working in the heat, the cold, the ocean, etc. To prepare for this style of question, familiarize yourself with the environment described within the job description. "Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

This question may come up during a phone screen with a recruiter at KBR, so be prepared to address this topic as soon as you submit your application. Tell me about your experience with ordering and overseeing the delivery of engineering/construction related materials and equipment.

"I have a full understanding of materials and equipment management. Much of what I learned was during my Project Management education. In my current position, I am responsible for the purchasing, distribution, and inventory of $13M of onsite materials. Just last year I was able to reduce our materials waste by 12%.
