"I don't need anything big to feel recognized for my work, but when I achieve something huge -- like completion of a big project -- I think it's nice to have something that feels celebratory, like a small gift card to a nice restaurant. That way, my partner and I can enjoy a nice meal out together to celebrate my accomplishment. That's the ideal situation for me."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. "I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

What kinds of events cause you stress on the job? How do you respond to stress?

"I feel stressed by stationary, inactive work -- that's why I made the transition from IT to retail in the first place. I've been working in retail for about three years now, and my stress levels have honestly decreased so much. I do occasionally feel stressed out during times of extreme customer traffic, like at the holidays, but even that stress is fun as long as I'm working on a team with people who are committed to having a good time while providing excellent customer service."

I believe I've gotten better about this over the years, though. When I find myself feeling stressed, I try to channel my energy into efficiency and having great customer interactions."

What do you hope to learn from this job at JB Hi-Fi?

"I've always loved working with computers and other electronics -- I've been taking apart computers and putting them back together since I was just a kid. I'm hoping that this role will offer me some opportunities to strengthen those engineering skills and afford me opportunities to potentially move up in the company in the future, hopefully in an IT position."

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep an employee motivated to do a great job and ensure that they are on top of their KPI's. The majority of people are very enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

Tell me about your most recent visit to a JB Hi-Fi store.

"I recently packed my oldest daughter up to go away to university, and we made a trip to JB Hi-Fi to get her a new laptop. The staff was so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable -- I'm not super computer-savvy, so it was great to have some guidance. I never felt like I was being pressured, and my daughter had a great time picking out the perfect laptop. I was really impressed with the level of professionalism I saw from all of the employees I interacted with, but it was also clear that they were having a great time at work. That experience is the main reason I'm pursuing this open position."

The interviewer wants to know that you've spent some time at JB Hi-Fi stores and that you were paying attention to what the experience was like. Talk to the interviewer about what you noticed about the store, the employees, and the customers there.

"One of my biggest pet peeves is walking into a store that's dirty or untidy, but every JB store I've been in has been immaculate. The aisles are spotless, the merchandise is nice and tidy, and everything is organized in such an efficient way. It made me feel really welcome and comfortable. I never feel pressured or hassled by the employees here, and I always leave the store smiling. I was surprised by what a positive impact it had on my day!"

"If I feel valued, I'll stay motivated. I want to know that my managers see me and my own unique contributions to the team. It can be anything from a simple work of appreciation to an award or public recognition -- the recognition itself doesn't matter as long as I'm being treated with respect and appreciated for my work."

"I worked for a small family-run boutique for several years, and I loved every moment of it. The work itself was engaging, but what really stands out to me are the relationships I built with my coworkers and managers -- I'm still friends with several of them to this day! I think it was really important to the owners that the workers they hired could get on well together, and that approach really paid off. We were a great team, and we always had fun."

"My favorite job was at a career services shop some years ago. I loved knowing that I was truly making a difference in someone's life, even if it was just having a positive interaction. I think my positive attitude and desire to bring light into people's days would be a great addition to the team here."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I do really well in most environments, but I've had trouble at my current store -- that's why I'm searching for a new job. I love the work, and retail is a great fit for me, but the company culture at my current work is really negative. My coworkers are really unhappy with the management team, so there's a lot of griping and toxic negativity going on, and I have a hard time not absorbing that kind of negative energy. I'm really looking for a workplace that feels inviting, fun, and most importantly positive."

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their style of communication and emulate it. Sometimes you have to relate to others in their style to be understood."

You cannot force others to communicate with you in a way that you would always prefer. Talk to the interviewer about a time that you have handled a supervisor who does not interact with you in a way that you like.

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"My first retail manager was an amazing leader -- she truly led by example. She was an incredibly hard worker and had a ton of responsibilities, but she never seemed phased or stressed, even when unexpected or stressful situations came up. Her investment in her job made me want to work harder because I wanted to be a good team member for her. That relationship really influenced the way that I work and the way I interact with my coworkers."

I've worked in both competitive and non-competitive work environments in the past and have done well in both -- but I definitely prefer an environment where I can get a little competitive. "My current sales position is highly commission based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Tell me about a time when you made a suggestion requesting change in an organization.

"When I first started at my current job, we didn't have any recycling system in place and our waste levels were through the roof. I spent some time after work looking into different recycling possibilities, and then I got to work creating a strategy for involving my coworkers in recycling efforts -- I even created a points and award system to inject some friendly competition into the plan. I took the idea to my manager, and she was really pleased; she gave me complete ownership of the project. Within a few months, our waste levels had decreased significantly, and I think it brought us all closer as a team."

"I am happy to offer a flexible schedule, and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days, after 5 PM."

"I currently work for a home furnishings retailer and had a customer the other day who had just purchased her first home but had no idea where to start with furnishings -- she had always relied on partners and roommates for home decor in the past. I spent time getting to know her personality, interests, and hobbies, and then I went around the store and collected some items that I thought she might like that would suit her home and get her started. She was really excited about a lot of the items I chose, and her large purchase helped us exceed our monthly sales goal."

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

"My most recent employer would say that I am a person of integrity. I fully believe in honesty at all times."

In a retail environment, staff turnover is often high. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift?

"I am more than willing to cover a shift for a co-worker if I am able. I don't mind accepting overtime hours and do consider myself to be a team player."

Being flexible in your schedule is valuable as a retail-based employee. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift and you were asked to cover? Assure the interviewer that you are a team player.

"If a co-worker failed to show up for their shift, I would pick it up if possible. I always strive to be a team player."

How do you handle customer complaints?

"When a customer has a complaint, I always make sure to stop any other tasks that I'm working on so I can really focus my attention on the customer. I make eye contact and use nonverbal cues to let the customer know I'm really listening to them. And of course, I offer to correct any mistakes that were made or loop my manager into the conversation if a more specialized response is required."

"I've had some dispute-resolution training in my previous retail positions, so I have a good base for dealing with customer complaints. As a general rule, I think it's most important that customers feel heard and understood when they have an issue with a product."

"I love the entertainment industry, so I'm always up to date on new film, music, and video game releases. It's easy for me to strike up conversations with customers about entertainment because it's my primary hobby, so I think it would be especially fun to work in any of the entertainment departments of the store."

What questions or concerns do you have about a role at JB Hi-Fi?

"I'm really excited about the possibility of moving to a new city at some point in the future. If I were offered a position at this store, would I be able to transfer to another store at some point in the future?"

JB Hi-Fi employees are restricted from reselling items purchased with their employee discount. How would you react if you discovered a coworker breaking this rule?

"I want my managers to be able to trust me, so I would immediately take the issue to my manager or supervisor as soon as I discovered a coworker behaving in this way. Abusing the employee discount basically equates to stealing from the store, and I have a huge problem with that."

One of the many perks for JB Hi-Fi team members is a generous employee discount for many of the products we carry in our stores, but employees are strictly prohibited from reselling items that they've purchased with their discount at a personal profit. Talk to the interviewer about how you would respond if you suspected or discovered that a coworker was abusing their employee discount in this way.

"If I only suspected that my coworker was abusing their discount, I would probably approach them about it and ask directly. I think it's important to give people the benefit of the doubt if I don't have any evidence. If it was clear that the coworker was reselling items, I would have no choice but to go to my manager about the situation."

At JB Hi-Fi we have a very clear return policy. How would you handle a customer who was arguing with you about a potential return?

"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy, and keeping the needs of the company in mind as well.
