Interscope Records Interview Questions

  1. 1.

What questions do you have for me?

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the queries you have are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of items you could have found the answers for from merely watching a video on their company site!

      Here are some sample questions:

      - When would you like to have this position filled?
      - How long has this role been vacant?
      - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role?
      - What is your favorite part about working here?
      - What is the company's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months?
      - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you?
      - What do you see as the most significant change in this industry over the past three years?
      - Is there any reason why you would not hire me?

      Rachelle's Answer

"Thank you for asking! A couple of questions come to mind. What do you see as the biggest challenge Interscope will be facing in the next 12 months? Also, what is your employee turnover rate, and could you tell me a bit about the retention plan you currently have in place?"

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would like to ask if there is anything in my background on which you need clarification? Also, after discussing everything today, is there any particular reason why I would not be the best fit for this internship role?"

  2. 2.

    Tell me about yourself.

When an interviewer asks an open-ended question like this, it can be challenging to know where to begin...and end! This question haunts many individuals who may have accidentally gone a little too in-depth into their personal lives. It happens. Keep your reply light, and work relevant. Share how you became interested in this career path and what you enjoy about it. This question offers an excellent opportunity to describe yourself by discussing the strengths and qualities that you bring.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would say that I am both analytical and creative, I'm extroverted at times, but like to hunker down and work on my own to knock out projects. When not at work, I love attending musicals, museums, and traveling. Not only is it something I love, but also I think it helps me expand my horizons on how I approach my creative work."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am a very active individual who loves to workout and goes to the mountains on the weekend. I feel that my level of activity on my off time greatly improves my work during the week. I have a high amount of energy to offer, and am even more cheerful when the phone rings! It must be that fresh mountain air."

  3. 3.

Can you talk to me about your GPA during undergraduate/graduate school?

The interviewer would like further details on your more significant successes as a post-secondary student. Are you satisfied with your GPA or would you change it if you could? Talk to the interviewer about your post-secondary experience. You can keep your answer brief and to the point.

If you are further along in your career: "The successes of my post-secondary education set the stage for my success in my career. My GPA could have been better; I graduated with a 3.4; however, the discipline that I learned was incredibly valuable."

      Rachelle's Answer

"The successes of my post-secondary education set the stage for my success in my career. My GPA could have been better; I graduated with a 3.4; however, the discipline that I learned was incredibly valuable."

      Rachelle's Answer

"If you are newer to your career: "I am currently running a 3.45 GPA and would like to bring this up to a 3.6 by the end of this year. My post-secondary studies have taught me a great deal about focusing on the tasks at hand."

  4. 4.

Talk about a recent entertainment campaign that caught your eye.

Interscope Records puts big dollars into marketing and promoting their artists. The interviewer wants to see that you understand the difference between a mediocre campaign and an effective one. Think about the latest entertainment advertisement that you saw, heard, or witnesses. Why did it catch your eye, and what made it so memorable. Be sure to show the interviewer your enthusiasm for marketing and promotions.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that the best marketing campaigns are ones where the artists meet their fans where they are. One example of this that I find unforgettable is DJ Khaled's use of Snapchat. Here, he talks about his path to happiness which has made him a voice in internet culture. Aside from his music, Khaled is now known for his catchphrases like 'I appreciate you' and 'You the best.' His loyal following has remained and he continues to broaden his reach."

      Rachelle's Answer

"One campaign that has stuck with me is one from Lee Scott, a hip-hop artist from the UK. When he dropped his album, he first released an exclusive premium version to 100 fans. Later, he created an exclusive bundle pack and charged even more for the next 100 fans. Lastly, upon general release, he charged premium rates by including merchandise into the packs. This slow-release strategy picked up a lot of PR and created a great amount of anticipation among his fan base."

  5. 5.

With which sector of the music and entertainment industry are you least experienced?

Similar to, 'What is your greatest weakness?', this question asks you to disclose the area where you are the least knowledgeable. It's essential that you highlight the area where you are least experienced while still showing the interviewer that you are confident in your ability to learn.

      Rachelle's Answer

"When it comes to the music and entertainment industry, unions, and guilds are the areas where I am least experienced. I am aware that many artists are part of a union; however, I am not entirely sure how those union agreements impact the work done here at Interscope Records. I am eager to learn the inner workings of topics such as this."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am least experienced when it comes to entertainment law both locally and internationally. I have performed some research and read many articles; however, I feel it will take more dedication from me to grasp the complexities of entertainment law."

  6. 6.

Who is your favorite band or musician, represented by Interscope Records? Why are they your favorite?

Having an answer to this means that you have to have conducted a fair amount of research on Interscope Records before going into your interview. Think of the music that you listen to the most, and be sure Interscope Records represent them. You can chat a bit about why you like this band or musician, and what you hope to see more of, from them, soon. Be sure to exude positivity and enthusiasm in your response!

      Rachelle's Answer

"My favorite musician represented by Interscope Records would be Lady Gaga. I like her because of her longevity in the music industry, first as a songwriter and then as the one in the spotlight. The fact that she can reinvent her look and sound while also entering the world of acting is amazing."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Interscope Records has signed Gwen Stefani, and I cannot get enough of her music lately! The sound transcends musical genres and decades since I listened to No Doubt religiously while in high school."

  7. 7.

Describe to me your ideal employer.

A job search isn't just a one-sided hunt. You must also feel as though this position with Interscope is a good fit for yourself. Tell the interviewer what your ideal employer may be. Be specific and be sure to keep the conversation positive. Avoid speaking poorly of any previous managers or organizations.

      Rachelle's Answer

"My ideal employer will be forward-thinking and unresistant to change in the entertainment industry. I like to streamline processes, for instance, and I would love to work for a company that receives a request for change with an open mind."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Ideally, I would work for a label like Interscope, led by passion, curiosity, and a high amount of energy. I am enthusiastic about what I do and work best with like-minded creatives."

  8. 8.

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?

The interviewers at Interscope want to know that you have a systematic approach to problem-solving. Consider the skills and qualities that help you successfully face problems. Perhaps you have a keen eye for detail. Maybe you can see opportunity when others can only focus on the issue. Share your strengths as a problem solver, and your ability to come up with innovative solutions.

      Strong problem solvers are:

      - Systematic thinkers
      - Open minded
      - Okay with being wrong sometimes
      - Always researching and exploring
      - Able to identify the core problem
      - Ready to reverse engineer a challenge to avoid future issues
      - Able to come up with multiple avenues that work well for all stakeholders
      - Are do-ers and not worriers

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am a great problem solver because I can compartmentalize all aspects of a problem before studying it. I also like to bring more experienced team members in to add to the solution. I will never try to be a hero and solve a complicated problem without tapping into the resources around me."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe I am a great problem solver because I am sure to gather as many facts as possible, I look at the problem and its potential solutions from multiple angles, and I am not afraid to make a creative decision, that might seem off the beaten path."

  9. 9.

Have you ever had to adapt your work style to fit team objectives?

The interviewer wants to see that you are open to change and are adaptable. Think about the times when you have had to learn a new policy, change your organization approach, or times when you have had to change your plan for meeting a goal. Talk to the interviewer about how you altered this work style to achieve the team's objectives. Be sure to mention that you were happy to accommodate this change to help the team reach the overall goal.

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a marketing director, it seems that our team changes our work styling almost every time a new trend hits, or a new algorithm comes to play. When these changes occur, I have to conduct research, share my findings, and then guide the team according to the new release or trend. It certainly keeps me on my toes!"

      Rachelle's Answer

"Typically, I like to begin my day with listening to voicemail, checking emails, and making a to-do list for the day. The goal of this team was to increase staff communication, so we decided to start each morning with a team huddle instead. This change meant that I was unable to kick-off my day with my usual morning routine. I was happy to meet with the team huddles because I understood that they were helping us meet our goal of improving communication."

  10. 10.

If Interscope Records hired you today, what would you accomplish first?

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal on how you will make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer what your impact goal is at Interscope, should you be the successful candidate.

      Rachelle's Answer

"When we were speaking earlier, about sales targets in this position, you mentioned that most new sales professionals hit their KPI's after 120 days. If hired today, my goal would be to exceed my KPI's after the first 90 days. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

      Rachelle's Answer

"If hired today, I would start with analyzing all quantifiable data from the last month, quarter, and year to identify any bottlenecks or shortfalls and set a plan to correct them."

  11. 11.

What personality traits should a professional in the entertainment industry possess?

Working in the record label industry is a tough gig that is worthy of only the most dedicated professionals. Some of the most sought-after characteristics in the sector include:

      - Persuasive & Strong Negotiator
      - Socially Intelligent & Self-Aware
      - Personable & Conversational
      - Trustworthy
      - Confident
      - Go-Getter Attitude

Discuss the personality traits you believe people in this industry should possess and be sure to address the fact that you will bring these skills to Interscope Records.

      Rachelle's Answer

"From reading your job description and knowing a fair amount about the entertainment industry I believe that an entertainment professional should be a go-getter, persuasive, and determined never to take no as an answer. Just like myself, they must be ready to hustle and get the job done no matter what it takes. With that said, there should also be a softer side to professionals in this industry. For myself, it's important that I am approachable, honest, and transparent with my clients and those I represent."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe the most successful professionals are ones who seek knowledge, good relationships and get the job done. When you show confidence in what you do, you are overall more persuasive and will make a bigger impact in your work. I am a confident person with great focus and believe my personality will be an excellent match for Interscope Records."

  12. 12.

Who are considered the 'Big 3' record labels, and how does Interscope Records compete?

The 'Big 3' record labels include:

      - Sony BMG
      - Warner Music Group
      - Universal Music Group (who own Interscope Records)

These three record labels own nearly 80% of the music market. Since you are interviewing for Interscope Records be prepared to discuss the other competition. How do they compete with each other to have the best talent in the music and entertainment industry?

      Rachelle's Answer

"Sony BGM, Warner Music and Universal Music who own Interscope make up the 'Big 3' in the music industry. I believe that the best way Interscope Records and Universal competes with their competitors is to work hard to sign the worlds' most celebrated artists to their core label. This approach includes being competitive when it comes to what you offer the artist. Also, working hard to scout hot new talent is a significant factor in your ability to remain ahead of your competitors."

      Rachelle's Answer

"The big three record labels are Sony BGM, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group who own Interscope. Together, these three hold 80% of the music market. The best way to remain competitive is to continue gaining access to the world's core talent and signing them to your primary label. The second part of this strategy is to be the first to find and sign hot new talent."

  13. 13.

What work situations excite and motivate you?

The interviewer would like to know how to motivate you on the job. It is essential, for your success, that Interscope knows how to keep you motivated and excited to come to work every day. Share with the interviewer what they could do to ensure that you are happy and productive.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am a creative person and, as such, I love an environment with sociable colleagues. When a team is encouraged to get along and discuss ideas, it makes for excellent results."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am most motivated, on the job, when tasks remain organized, and the vibe is positive. I value strong teamwork and good leadership."

  14. 14.

How fast do you respond to emails and web inquiries? What timeline do you feel is appropriate?

The interviewer would like to know what you interpret as a fast turnaround when it comes to responding to your customers. You should take note of how quickly you are responded to, by Interscope, throughout your candidacy. This question also offers the opportunity for you to ask the interviewer what their company policy or expectation may be. You don't want to say '3 days' when it's 24 hours!

      Rachelle's Answer

"My response time may vary depending on urgency; however, I never leave my clients hanging more than a day. What is your preference here at Interscope Records."

      Rachelle's Answer

"My clients often need speedy responses. Between myself and the person that I intern for, we almost always return inquiries within 8 hours. Could you share with me your expectation here?"

  15. 15.

What is your least favorite personal trait, and what are you doing to improve yourself in that area?

If you had to pick one trait about yourself that you are not overly proud of, what would it be? The interviewer would like to get a great idea of the 'real' you. Talk a bit about something that you are working on within yourself, but avoid mentioning a trait that would disqualify you for the position.

Some of the most common personality traits that people dislike include:

      - Being a 'know-it-all.'
      - Conceitedness
      - Rudeness or arrogance
      - Dominating conversations
      - Dishonesty
      - Moodiness or being temperamental
      - Irresponsible
      - Co-dependent

      Rachelle's Answer

"I try to be a good person, but sometimes I can be unintentionally sharp with my comments. My friends say it's my Polish upbringing but either way, I would never want someone to feel uncomfortable around me. I am very conscious of my words now."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I tend to take rejection too personally which is something that I am working to improve. When working as an intern, it isn't a good look to have your feelings hurt too often! I am thickening my skin a bit. I like to take the feedback that I receive and improve myself as much as possible."
