Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019

"Sony BGM, Warner Music and Universal Music who own Interscope make up the 'Big 3' in the music industry. I believe that the best way Interscope Records and Universal competes with their competitors is to work hard to sign the worlds' most celebrated artists to their core label. This approach includes being competitive when it comes to what you offer the artist. Also, working hard to scout hot new talent is a significant factor in your ability to remain ahead of your competitors."

2nd Answer Example
"The big three record labels are Sony BGM, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group who own Interscope. Together, these three hold 80% of the music market. The best way to remain competitive is to continue gaining access to the world's core talent and signing them to your primary label. The second part of this strategy is to be the first to find and sign hot new talent."

Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
1st Answer Example
"In my current position I am faced with challenging clients daily. I seem to always come to a good resolution by using my gift of gab. I ask questions and actively listen. I had a client call saying that we delivered defective merchandise valued at over $30k. Understandably, he was livid. He was threatening to stop doing business with us. This customer was one of my best customers, previously, so it was a rough phone call. I immediately took responsibility and asked pointed questions to try to get to the root of what was defective about the item, and assured him over and over that we would make it right. I went into a conference room, bringing the COO and Director of Operations with me, and we all assured him how we valued his business and would be sure to make it right. Not only that, we would put steps in place to ensure this type of thing did not slip through our QA again. Ultimately, we had a satisfied customer who went on to grow in business volume and praised how we remedied the situation."
Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example
"I often get challenging customers on the phone, demanding to speak with the owner of the company. He is often traveling, and I have to tell them that he is unavailable. When I have an especially worked up customer, I kill them with kindness! It works nearly every time. I am understanding, and let their words wash off like they are nothing. I offer solutions such as email communication, leaving a voicemail, and more. All while remaining calm and kind."

Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019

"Typically, I like to begin my day with listening to voicemail, checking emails, and making a to-do list for the day. The goal of this team was to increase staff communication, so we decided to start each morning with a team huddle instead. This change meant that I was unable to kick-off my day with my usual morning routine. I was happy to meet with the team huddles because I understood that they were helping us meet our goal of improving communication."

15. How would you market an artist when you do not enjoy their work?
How to Answer
Without explicitly discussing any artists that you do not care for, try talking more about the approach you would take if Interscope Records asked you to help market them. Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
1st Answer Example
"I understand that not everyone at Interscope Records will like absolutely every talent that is signed. That's just part of the job, and it's good to have preferences when it comes to taste in music. That's part of what makes us unique. If I were asked to market an artist whom I did not particularly enjoy, I would work just as hard to market and promote them as if they were my all-time favorite. Through the process, I would likely develop a new appreciation for the work!"
Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example
"My personal preferences would never have an impact on how hard I would work for an artist signed with Interscope Records. Whether I enjoy their work or not, it's my job to help them succeed, create profit opportunities for the label, and operate at 100% capacity every day."

Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019

"I believe that the best marketing campaigns are ones where the artists meet their fans where they are. One example of this that I find unforgettable is DJ Khaled's use of Snapchat. Here, he talks about his path to happiness which has made him a voice in internet culture. Aside from his music, Khaled is now known for his catchphrases like 'I appreciate you' and 'You the best.' His loyal following has remained and he continues to broaden his reach."
Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example
"One campaign that has stuck with me is one from Lee Scott, a hip-hop artist from the UK. When he dropped his album, he first released an exclusive premium version to 100 fans. Later, he created an exclusive bundle pack and charged even more for the next 100 fans. Lastly, upon general release, he charged premium rates by including merchandise into the packs. This slow-release strategy picked up a lot of PR and created a great amount of anticipation among his fan base."

Lastly, record labels and their scouts actively work on talent scouting and the development of new artists."
Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019

Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example
"I see record labels relying less on dollars for records sold and more on royalties from streaming services, merchandise, and endorsements. I also foresee changes when it comes to ownership of intellectual property. Artists have more tools available to them to control outcomes now - many more than they had in the 1990s for instance. Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
1st Answer Example
"The internet has opened endless possibilities when it comes to new artist promotion. If I were to put a plan into place for increasing record sales for lesser-known artists, I would begin with social media marketing efforts on YouTube and Instagram; primarily with Instastories. Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example

You have done so by signing exceptional talents such as Lady Gaga and Machine Gun Kelly who are making waves in both the music and acting realms."
Written by Rachelle Enns on May 4th, 2019
2nd Answer Example
"From what I have observed while preparing for this interview, one of the biggest challenges a record label faces today are the streaming services out there who are gaining market leverage and creating a loss of revenue for labels and artists. I believe that Interscope Records has overcome this through brand loyalty as well as the fact that you have signed artists with a highly loyal fan base."
