"I rate my problem-solving skills as an 8/10. I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as efficient as I would like to be but all in all, I do feel that my problem-solving skills are above average. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my fast reflexes when a problem arises, and they would also say that I remain calm under pressure."

The interviewer wants to know how you would rate your problem-solving skills. Of course, you want to give yourself a strong rating; however, it's essential that you remain realistic. Everyone has room to learn and improve! Be sure to justify your score as well.

"I would say I get a solid 8.3 on a scale of 10. Seems weird to give myself something like a .3, but I think of it as an 83%, which is a B- teetering on a solid B. It's a solid grade, with definite room for improvement, since I'm certainly not perfect. The reason for the B-/B grade would be that I'm quick to take action and figure out the solution as I go, but sometimes I could benefit from taking a moment to pause and reflect or gather other contributors before taking action. That said, I believe I generally get the best outcome possible when faced with a challenge."

Fraser Health Authority offers Medical Assistance in Dying referrals. What are your thoughts on this?

"I have to say that there was a time when I would have emphatically said 'no' to any suggestion of purposefully ending one's life. However, after working hospice for a short time and seeing people at the end of their lives, I am more open to the idea. I think very strict criteria should be in place and an understanding that this is not an option for someone who is just 'tired of living.' My opinion would probably be frowned upon by many of my friends or co-workers, but having seen a side to terminally illness that they have not makes me feel more empathy toward those thinking of making this decision."

The idea of choosing to end one's life is a very touchy subject for some people. Fraser Health Authority's Medical Assistance in Dying refers to a doctor or nurse practitioner helping a person, at their request, to end their life. The person must want to voluntarily and intentionally end their life. As a note of reference, simply wanting to end one's life is not the only criteria for a referral. There is an in-depth interview, psychological testing, and terminal diagnosis requirement. The interviewer is asking what your thoughts are. It's important to remember that when someone asks your thoughts, share them, but also be respectful. Everyone does not have the same views, especially with regard to end of life choices.

"I don't suppose anyone has ever asked my opinion about medically assisted dying. I actually feel torn about the concept. I was reared in a strict Christian home and that upbringing tells me that no man should end his own life. On the other hand, having worked in the healthcare industry for a number of years, I have seen many people in their last days. I feel like a decision of this magnitude should be carefully thought about and that a patient should be of sound mind enough to make this decision without interference from anyone else."

What part of your healthcare career brings you the most stress?

"The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when the schedule is running behind due to lack of hustle on mine or my teams part. I like to be on time with my schedule to ensure that our patients and clients are assisted properly."

Stress can often be a regular part of the day to day work experience. Talk to the interviewer about which areas of your career are the most stressful. Ensure that your answer does not include a factor that would make you appear unfit for the position. (IE: a bus driver should not find driving to be the most stressful part of the job).

"To be completely transparent, I probably bring myself the most stress because of my innate desire to be the best. I strive for perfection too often, which causes undue stress on myself. I manage this by focusing my energy on productive activities that are good for my career."

If you could expand your knowledge and expertise in any healthcare service area, which would you choose?

"If I could choose any area of healthcare services to be a subject matter expert in, I would choose geriatric care. I do feel that this particular focus is not as popular as some, and become an expert in it would allow me to snowball in my career."

"I have a variety of interests within healthcare service, so that is a tough question for me! I suppose if I had to narrow it to just one area of expertise, I would say palliative care and the necessary family care that comes with it."

"When we were speaking earlier, you mentioned that you were urgently seeking to improve the level of patient care and compassion at this facility. I want to offer my strong skills when it comes to building patient rapport and help to improve the satisfaction of everyone that uses the services of Fraser Health Authority. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal on how you will make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer what your impact goal is, should you be the successful candidate. If you want to make an impact with your answer, refer to the immediate needs of the company such as increasing budgets, or improving patient care, for instance.

This question is a delicate one, and you need to show respect for the onboarding process, then give a moderately ambitious project that you could execute. "I have never worked specifically in maternity specialty, but I have experience with pregnant patients while working in the emergency department. I have personally helped deliver ten babies and transferred five more patients to labor and delivery. It was an incredible experience assisting with the births, and I would love to work in maternity if offered the chance."

Fraser Medical Authority's Maternal Fetal Medicine works with pregnant patients who have at-risk conditions during pregnancy. Maternal Fetal Medicine offers genetic screening, ultrasounds, pre and post-natal care, and consultations with a referral from a physician. They also provide interpreters for those who speak a foreign language. "Yes, I have six years of experience working in labor and delivery, and I prefer the maternity specialty over others. I have worked in the emergency department, ICU, and medical floor, but maternity is my favorite. "Every morning I listen to X Podcast because I find the information to be fresh, and valuable. In addition to this podcast, I also subscribe to a couple of industry blogs. One is ABC, and the other is XYZ. I greatly value the information shared between fellow professionals. What resources do you prefer to stay on top of industry trends and changes?"

Employers expect employees to stay up-to-date on their respective field, and today's technology makes this reasonably easy! List several ways that you receive your industry knowledge and stay on top of trends. Tell the interviewer about those daily update emails you receive from professional organizations, conferences you attend, and seminars you have taken.Lastly, it's a great idea to ask the interviewer what resources they refer to for industry trends. That question can start up a great conversation, and you may learn a thing or two as well.

"I am an avid fan of google alerts! I will receive an email with the related information any time there is a major headline about the healthcare services industry. In addition to this, I also subscribe to a couple of medical-related journals."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

"One of the most common complaints we ever received in the emergency department where I used to work was the long wait times. I think the idea of a Fast Track Clinic is a brilliant way to separate emergency patients from non-emergent so that each group of patients can be given quality care in a timely manner."

The Fast Track Clinic at Fraser Health Authority provides care to individuals presenting to the emergency department with minor ailments such as bruises, allergic reactions, infections, and lacerations. There is a separate area for non-urgent patients with its own team of nurses, physicians and unit clerks. Eligible individuals are redirected from the main emergency area for registration, assessment and treatment as appropriate. The concept behind fast track clinics is becoming a growing trend as healthcare facilities explore ways to reduce wait times, especially in emergency departments. "I have never worked in a facility that had a fast track clinic, but I am very supportive of the concept. As a nurse, I can tell you it is frustrating to have to tell a patient who has been waiting for a long while that someone else has to be moved ahead of them. Most patients are understanding when an emergency occurs, but if we can provide care to non-emergency patients while assessing and caring for emergencies, I believe it will alleviate stress for patients and healthcare providers alike."

"No, I have never participated in a weight loss program. I have been on the thinner side my entire life and have trouble consuming enough calories to gain weight. I am healthy, but my physician says I have accelerated metabolism, so it is difficult to put on weight. I completely support weight loss programs as I realize it is difficult for many people to lose weight. I also understand the importance of educating people on leading a healthy lifestyle from an early age. I think it is wonderful that Fraser Health Authority sponsors a Healthy Weights Program and would love to be involved in some capacity."

Obesity is the cause of several diseases, including cardiac disease and Diabetes. The Healthy Weights program supports and educates children and teens ages 6-17 and their families to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The program offers activity sessions and discussions regarding healthy eating, active living, and emotional issues around eating. Many insurance companies now offer incentives for their clients to lose weight to become more healthy, thus reducing the expense concerning weight-related healthcare. "Yes, I participated in a weight loss program offered through my insurance company five years ago. "A skill I would like to improve is delegating tasks. I know it is an essential skill as a healthcare professional, and I am working on improving in this area. I am used to doing things myself and not asking for help, so it is a concept I am getting used to. To improve, I became the volunteer coordinator at my current job. My job is to assign tasks to the volunteers and follow up with them when they are done. Since I was appointed to this position, it has become much easier to delegate assignments and ask for help when needed."

Some interviewers dislike using the term weakness, so they will ask about a skill you would like to improve. You want to share a work-related skill, not a personal one. "I am working on improving my typing speed. Currently, my speed is 40 words per minute, which is considered average. However, my goal is to increase my speed to 60 words per minute. I signed up for an online typing course and started three days ago. The course outline says students can go from average to advanced in thirty days, spending thirty minutes a day practicing. I aim to be at 60 words per minute in the next thirty days."

After everything we have discussed in the interview, do you have any questions for me?

"Thank you for asking. Yes, I do have a few questions. Could you please describe the company culture? Also, what is the schedule for this position? I am flexible but would like an idea of the hours I would be working."

Interviewers hope to cover any questions you might have during the interview. When they ask if you have any questions, it is always recommended to ask at least one or two questions. It shows the interviewer you are interested in the company and the position and eager to learn all you can. Be sure the questions you ask could not be answered by visiting the company website or reviewing the job description. The interviewer does not want to answer questions you could find by researching the organization.

"Yes, I am available to work whatever schedule you assign. I have worked in healthcare for fifteen years and understand the demands of the job. I have no outside obligations that will keep me from working holidays, weekends, or nights."

Working in a healthcare position requires flexibility with your schedule. Healthcare is a 24/7 job, and the interviewer wants to hear that you are available to work nights, holidays, and weekends when needed. When you show that you are flexible with your schedule, the interviewer will see that you understand the job's demands and that you are a team player.

"Yes, I can work whenever you need me to. I enjoy working a non-traditional schedule, including weekends and holidays. I have a night class I take twice a week, but my professor is flexible if I need to miss a class due to work. Also, my family is used to my schedule, and we celebrate holidays and special events on my days off."

It is often said that a career in healthcare is a 'thankless job'. How can we keep you motivated and engaged, even on the days when you feel your work goes unnoticed?

"I am an easily motivated individual, and it does not take much to keep me engaged. I am fully aware that healthcare-related positions can seem thankless. Honestly, the best thanks that I can get is a pat on the back now and then. The majority of my motivation comes from simply helping people."

The interviewer would like to know how they could continue to motivate you - even on the hardest of days. Do you need to have verbal recognition? Are you motivated solely by the success of your team? Talk to the interviewer about how you have stayed motivated in the past.

"My chosen career was helping people at exactly the point they were least capable of censoring themselves or giving back. So, I stopped needing thanks from my patients. It's not like I don't need positive reinforcement. Everyone does. But I made a point to find it in other places instead of expecting it from my patients. Nowadays I make an effort to expressly thank the people I work with when they do a good job. I focus on being grateful to be allowed to see private, raw, emotional parts of peoples lives. And I make work-related goals I can achieve for satisfaction."

Keep in mind - almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, but there are other ways that you can describe yourself that have a more positive connotation. "This is a great question. I think the right answer is, 'of course, but not for long'! We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you have to give someone a cancer diagnosis. Its professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story, its the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."

Fraser Health Authority's iConnect Health Center offers education and exercise classes to help patients manage chronic conditions. Have you worked more with chronic or acute illnesses?

"I actually have experience working with both chronic and acute patients. I worked in the emergency department for a few years which, obviously, was acute care. I also worked in a long-term care facility where the majority of the clients had at least one chronic condition that was managed. I love the idea of having classes to educate patients regarding things that they can do independently to help manage their health. iConnect Health Center sounds like a great opportunity for patients to learn and grow."

iConnect Health Center classes are designed with patients who suffer from chronic conditions in mind. Statistically, over 60% of clients who suffer from one chronic illness will often develop another. "The majority of my experience has been in acute care. However, although I worked in acute care, many of our patients came in due to exacerbations or complications related to a chronic condition. "I can definitely see where offering support to older adults in this area could be very beneficial. I believe each lifespan experiences different things that bring stress. For the older generation, I can see where changes in their lives such as losing friends or loved ones, having to move from their home, or loss of a job may cause a feeling of hopelessness. This is where I've seen substance abuse come in with older adults. I think offering support to people within certain age groups is a great. I believe encouraging these clients to participate in group counseling may alleviate some of their feelings of loneliness, as well."

Substance abuse is becoming more commonplace across gender and age gaps. Different age groups have different stressors that may lead to substance use/abuse. Part of Fraser Health Authority's effort to reduce substance use is their Older Adult Substance Use Service. The service provides counseling and support for adults who are 65 and older and their loved ones who are concerned about substance use. It was several years ago, and it's no longer an issue for me because I've made significant changes in my life to pursue this career. But I don't want you to be surprised by the information. I'm happy to answer any questions you have."

"I would describe myself as a detail-oriented and highly organized person. I pride myself on catching even the slightest errors in reports and remembering the smallest details when speaking with patients and family members. I stay organized by using a time-management app that alerts me to every appointment and high-priority tasks that need to be accomplished. My attention to detail and organizational skills have been mentioned in many performance reviews by my supervisors and in a letter of recommendation by my college professor. I have copies of both if you would like them for your file."

As a healthcare professional, you must keep your day organized to keep work flowing smoothly while accurately and properly documenting every detail. Tell the interviewer how you stay organized. "I think the healthcare professionals who choose psychiatry as a specialty field are an elite group. I have always been fascinated with the study of psychiatry. I have never worked directly with youth who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, but I have volunteered at a youth center that had some children there who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. It was difficult to see the way the disorder affected them."

There was a time when the idea of children or adolescents being affected by a mental health disorder was not popular. With on-going research and studies, more attention is being focused on assessing pediatric mental health as well as physical health. While mental health medicine is an in-depth specialty, just like other medicine, adolescent mental health disorders are treated with a specific approach. Some mental health professionals choose to treat only adults. This could be because, as children grow and mature, there are so many changes (hormonal, personality, etc) that, unless one is specifically trained to identify adolescent disorders, certain treatment options may be overlooked. "I worked part-time at a mental health clinic in (city) a few years ago. Although the majority of our clients were adults, we did have a few adolescent patients from time to time. I think having a day treatment program for adolescents is a great way to treat them on their own level and offer personal support."

"I used to work between the Labor & Delivery unit and Pediatrics. We noticed a trend regarding child abuse and neglect among younger mothers. I truly believe that offering programs like this could be what saves some children."

Personally, I'd like to get involved in some of the local volunteer organizations. I speak Spanish, and I have an interest in urban outreach so it would be nice to do something formal in that context...health-education or fundraising."

Fraser Health Authority seeks to hire those with strong problem solving skills. When were you able to successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?

"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was a success, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to be working very well."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are critical skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace. Talk about a time when you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

"I was working in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

We have partnered with Creekside Withdrawal Management Detox Service. Do you have any experience personally or professionally with drug detox programs?

"Since I am new to this field, I do not have professional experience working with drug detox programs. However, my father is a recovering alcoholic and drug user. When I was thirteen, he entered a withdrawal management detox program. He spent almost a year of inpatient and outpatient treatment, and I clearly remember what that entailed. My family also attended counseling to understand what my father was going through and how we could support him. It was challenging for everyone involved, but my father became clean and sober and has been for fifteen years now."

Describe any personal or professional experience you have with drug detox programs. The interviewer asks this question to see what experience you have working with their target population. When they ask if you have personal experience, they want to know if you have had a friend or loved one go through a drug detox program. When staff has a personal experience, they tend to be more compassionate and empathetic to the patient. However, you will not automatically be disqualified as a candidate if you do not have prior experience. Assure the interviewer that you have compassion and empathy for all patients regardless of previous experience.

"I do not have personal experience with drug detox programs, as my family and I have never used drugs or alcohol. But, I do have professional experience and have worked with drug detox programs for the past four years. That is one of the reasons I applied to Fraser Health Authority as I am interested in continuing my work with patients who chose to improve their lives free of drugs and alcohol."

"I don't have any personal experience and very limited professional experience. The only experience I have is when I worked at the hospital we would offer detox services for people with certain substances. The programs there are voluntary and we encouraged them to try if they had insurance to cover the cost."

How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity. Your example could include buzzwords such as introverted, energetic, and confident.

"I'm genuinely easy-going, probably from all the international travel I experienced in my 20's. I like to do the right thing, and sometimes I get stressed trying to reach that goal, but I think it's a worthwhile endeavor. I can be funny, but my sense of humor is pretty dry, so people don't always know that about me when they first meet me."

"I have worked with diverse groups of people most of my career, including my time in University. I am most comfortable, and happy, in this type of environment because it offers me unique learning opportunities."

"Whether I am doing an independent project, or working in a team environment, I always give my best. I enjoy the camaraderie of working in a team, but I can be successful working autonomously as well."
