"A few years ago, I had a manager who made a habit of hand-writing thank you notes for team members who went the extra mile for the team or our customers, and I always really appreciated that small, thoughtful token of appreciation. Public recognition and gifts are always nice, but it meant so much more to me to have a manager who took the time to think through what she appreciated about one or more of her employees every month. It motivated me to do my best work because I wanted to be an employee who she trusted and appreciated enough that she would take those few moments to say thank you."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I've been on school and intramural sports teams since I was really young, and timeliness and punctuality are values that every coach has instilled in me. Being on time is really important to me, so I always have a backup plan in mind if something goes wrong. I tend to leave for work much earlier than necessary -- that way, I have time to relax before my shift starts and I have a buffer built into my schedule if something unexpected pops up that would have made me late for work."

My go-to strategy to prevent being late to any event, including work, is to have a plan B, C, and D -- that way, if something unexpected happens, I don't have to worry about how I'm going to stick to the tight schedule."

Do you have reliable transportation?

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

What do you hope to learn from this job at Foot Locker?

"One of the main reasons I'm interested in a job at Foot Locker is that I would really like to move into a Merchandising role someday. I'm hoping that starting out on the sales floor will lay the groundwork for me to take on more responsibilities and, hopefully, will make me an ideal candidate for a merchandising role sometime in the future."

One of Foot Locker's corporate goals for 2018 is to build a more powerful digital business. What was your reaction to the website and the Foot Locker app?

"This Foot Locker app is really impressive. It's no-nonsense, easy to use, and it has everything I need to shop and buy with the press of a button. I especially like Shoemoji keyboard -- it's such a fun, unique way to engage customers, especially the younger crowd who are just getting into sneaker culture. I showed the app to my friends, and it was a huge hit! We even used the Launch Locator function to find out about upcoming product launches."

Let the interviewer know that you prepared for your interview by spending time on the Foot Locker website and the Foot Locker phone app. Did you find the app easy to use? Do you have any suggestions for changes?

"I think it was a really smart call to put apparel front and center on the website -- not all customers immediately think of tees, joggers, and jerseys as major Foot Locker products, but I know they're a huge part of the business! I also really appreciate the Release Calendar. A huge part of sneaker culture is being up to date on the newest releases and launches, so it's great that Foot Locker makes it so easy to know what's coming soon!"

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

"I am currently making $22/hour with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

How can Foot Locker motivate you on the job?

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a leaderboard and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

"I am very much self-driven and self-motivated. As long as I am being treated with respect and feel appreciated, you will get the best work from me."

"Integrity is very important to me. I can't work for a company whose business dealings are shady or that isn't transparent about their values, goals, and supply line. Ideally, I want to work for a company that treats their employees, their customers, and the earth with care and respect."

We need reliable people on our team at Foot Locker. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I do my best work when I feel like I'm really a member of a team, so I think Foot Locker will be a great fit for me. All of the feedback I've read online about the work environment here indicates that the employees are encouraged to treat each other with respect, encourage each other, and help each other meet sales goals. That's just what I'm looking for!"

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

"The VIP membership is really a no-brainer for anyone who loves shoes as much as I do -- you automatically get a $10 coupon when you sign up, and then you have access to special discounts and coupons year round! For athletes or anyone who's loves sneaker culture in general, the VIP membership is definitely the way to go."

Part of your job as a sales associate at Foot Locker will be to sell customers on regular and VIP memberships. Show the interviewer that you spent some time on the Foot Locker website doing research about different memberships and offerings we have available.

"If a customer was reticent to join the Foot Locker VIP membership program, I would let them know that the most convenient thing about it is the faster checkout -- since the membership keeps track of your shipping and billing information, checkout is a breeze. It's also easy to unsubscribe from the email promotions, if that's a concern -- but I'd make sure the customer knew that they run the risk of missing out on exciting events, promotions, and product launches."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"I really appreciate that Foot Locker has a tried-and-true leadership model for its management team to live by -- that makes me even more excited about the possibility of working here! The best manager I've ever had really embodied the idea of 'bringing others along': she consistently checked in on me to make sure I was on board with any new policies; she found ways to train me and push my skills to new levels; and she really took an interest in helping me develop my sales skills. If that's the kind of management I can look forward to at Foot Locker, I think I'll be really happy here!"

"I've been an athlete all my life, so I love some friendly competition. I think there are ways to infuse a work environment with healthy competition without sacrificing teamwork -- those are the work environments I enjoy the most!"

"I think one way to improve is to make it easy for customers to give you feedback. Maybe there's a way to send out customer surveys where the customer receives a small coupon for their feedback -- that way, the customer feels like they have a voice and have the added benefit of a small financial reward, and Foot Locker gets to hear directly from their customers how they can be doing better. It's a win-win!"

"I am happy to work within a flexible schedule and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days after 5 PM."

Foot Locker, like most retailers, has shifts from early morning to late in the evening, including weekends and holidays. Is your schedule flexible enough to accommodate shifts during these times? How many hours are you able to work per week?

"I understand that this role will include working evenings, weekends, and holidays. I am available to work anytime and am happy to work overtime as well."

"Last week I noticed that my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some of the staff were complaining that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so that she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by way of organization."

What does it mean to you do 'strive to be the best in everything you do'? Display to the interviewer that you can do more than the bare minimum. Show that you can react appropriately when you see that your employer has a need that goes beyond your usual day-to-day expectations.

"Just yesterday I had a customer make a purchase, and I noticed that she was struggling with her bags. She had a stroller, a couple of kids, and a lot of bags to carry. I offered to help her out to her car, and she gratefully accepted. It felt excellent to go above the call of duty that day."

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

"While I haven't yet held a retail position, I think my passion for sneaker culture as well as my love of athletics in general make up for my lack of experience. My hardest job, in terms of customer service, was probably when I worked at an IT call center where I regularly had to calm upset clients. I learned so much about communication, listening, and creating great customer service experiences out of frustrating circumstances."

Even if you don't have any retail experience, successful applicants at Foot Locker should display a passion for the industry as well as Foot Locker customers: athletes, shoe aficionados, and casual shoppers alike. "My most challenging position, and also my most favorite position, would be my current role. I would not normally choose to leave; however, I need to find a position related to my newly acquired degree. "I've worked in luxury retail environments in the past, so I'm familiar and comfortable with the sale of products with a high price point. My integrity and honesty have never been questioned at work because I always treat expensive products and large cash transactions with respect."

New launch days can mean a significant increase in cash transactions, so your managers will need to be able to trust you with the expensive merchandise and cash. "My most recent employer would say that I am a person of integrity. I fully believe in honesty at all times."

"It's good to know that Foot Locker's employee turnover rate is lower than the average for retail! That makes me even more excited about the possibility of working here. I am more than willing to cover a shift for a co-worker if I am able. I don't mind accepting overtime hours and do consider myself to be a team player."

Being flexible in your schedule is valuable as a Foot Locker employee. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift and you were asked to cover? Assure the interviewer that you are a team player.

"If a co-worker failed to show up for their shift, I would pick it up if possible. I always strive to be a team player."

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a co-worker?

"When I first started out working in retail, I learned really quickly how important it is to know how to de-escalate a confrontation with a customer who is upset, frustrated, rude, or angry. In my experience, the most important thing to do is acknowledge that the frustration is valid and listen very closely to everything the customer says. I usually repeat back the problem as I understand it after the customer has had their say so that they know I was listening."

Retail and customer service based roles will often require diplomacy when it comes to working with the public. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle an aggressive customer.

"Simple nonverbal cues usually go a long way in helping a customer calm down when they're upset about a problem they've experienced in the store -- nodding, smiling, and eye contact all make the customer feel seen and heard. Every customer is different, so every complaint is different, but I know that most companies have policies in place to guide employees in dealing with customers who are upset. What's the process here at Foot Locker?"

"First and foremost, I'm a passionate athlete who loves footwear. I think it would be really easy for me to engage customers about their favorite athletic pastimes -- and their wardrobe. When I'm passionate about something, I'm really enthusiastic and want everyone to be 'in on it'; my friends tell me that when I could sell water to a fish if I wanted to. In that way, I really respond to Foot Locker's leadership model of 'bringing others along' -- I want everyone to be as excited about the new Nikes or Jordans as I am."

"I really loved Foot Locker's GO BIG window display from a few years ago -- I thought it was so creative and bold, and it made me really curious about who designs the displays. I've never worked on window displays before, but I'm really eager to learn!"

The window displays and merchandising at Foot Locker are dynamic, bold, and playful. Do you have experience creating store displays? Would you be interested in helping the display team in the design and construction of the displays?

"I believe that with some training, I could very easily create some attractive displays. I have a natural flair for the creative and look forward to exercising that."

This position requires you to wear a uniform to work. Have you worn a uniform in the workplace before? How do you feel about this?

"I really like the uniforms at Foot Locker! I remember going to the stores when I was young and thinking the employees were real referees -- it made the experience really fun for me. I think wearing the Foot Locker uniform would make me feel ready for work: to have fun, exude positive energy, and get in the spirit to help customers find exactly what they're looking for."

Describe a time you received constructive criticism for your work. How did you respond?

"When I first started out in retail, I was very shy -- it was hard to adjust to the customer service standards at the store because I was so insecure about talking to new people. My manager noticed me struggling through a conversation with a customer, where the customer was growing frustrated with my difficulty detailing our return policy. My manager stepped in and gave me a hand, and afterward gave me a detailed critique of how I could do better in the future. I really appreciated the feedback; it made me feel good to know that my manager was taking an interest in my work, and it made me want to do better in the future. With her help, I worked on my communication skills and built my confidence, and now I'm much more comfortable talking with customers and answering their questions. The criticism gave me the boost of confidence that I needed."

Foot Locker strives to continuously improve to better serve its customers and employees. In the pursuit of excellence, there is almost always room for improvement. Talk to the interviewer about a time your work was criticized. How did you respond to the feedback? What did you learn from that experience?

"A year or so ago, I was in the stock room working on packaging products to be shipped to customers. It was my first time working on shipments alone, and I thought I had a handle on what I was doing. After about half an hour, my supervisor came in and watched me for a few minutes and then gave me some feedback on what she had observed. It turned out I had been missing a standard step as I was packaging the items. I ended up having to unpack and repack the shipments I had completed so they were up to company standards. My supervisor was really nice about it -- she understood that I was just starting out, but she encouraged me to ask for help if I was unsure about a step in the process in the future."

We have a strong employee honesty program in place at Foot Locker to prevent loss. What would you do if you discovered that a co-worker was stealing product or money?

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

Loss prevention initiatives are incredibly important in ensuring that Foot Locker stays competitive with other companies in the industry. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle a situation surrounding employee theft. Be sure to avoid sounding self-righteous in your answer. Be diplomatic and refer to company protocol in these situations.

"I value honesty so if I saw a co-worker stealing; I would tell my manager immediately. Do you have a process in place for reporting these types of situations?"

"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

Tell the interviewer how you would describe our Fit Guarantee to a customer. What would you do if a customer wanted to argue with you about our return policy?

"The Foot Locker Fit Guarantee is really generous. If a customer wanted to argue with the refund and exchange policy, I would highlight the 45-day refund and let them know that our goal is to help them find the exact product and fit they're looking for. I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations."

"I'm so impressed by the percentage of minority employees, especially within the management structure. "Honestly, I just love talking about shoes. My friends get onto me about it sometimes because I get so excited when there's a new product launch or hype is building around an emerging brand. I'm a very confident communicator, especially when it comes to talking about something I love, so it would come naturally to me to engage customers in conversations about their favorite sneakers or help them find their new favorite brand. To me, 'bringing others along' means spreading my passion and love for the sneaker industry, and I'd be really excited to do that as an associate at Foot Locker."
