  1. 1.

How do you prevent burnout and remain highly motivated?

      How to Answer

Working in the tech industry means investing many hours into your job and keeping up in a fast-paced environment with high expectations. Talk to the interviewers about your ability to remain motivated, even in high-stress, high-demand environments.

Provide the interviewers with details on how you prevent burnout. Some approaches that might work for you include:

      - Taking your allotted vacation time periodically rather than continually banking vacation days.
      - Learn how to say no to obligations that are not high-value or high-reward.
      - Tap into your professional passions as often as possible.
      - Grow your knowledge base and gain new skills regularly.
      - Schedule time during the day to take short brain breaks.
      - If possible, change your work environment when you begin to feel restless.
      - Use your breaks to exercise, get outside, and nourish yourself properly.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I was taught early on in my career that strategically planning a project, from start to finish, is a great way to prevent burnout and keep motivation high. When I break down my tasks and projects into smaller milestones, it minimizes my stress and keeps me moving at a manageable pace. If I ever feel overwhelmed or demotivated, I will get up and move around to refresh myself mentally and physically. In my current role, I am sure to get outside during my lunch break and go for a walk. This habit revitalizes me for the afternoon."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have found that one of the best ways to stay motivated and avoid burnout is to celebrate small wins and milestones along the way. For instance, my team will take the time to celebrate after a product launch, and we also encourage each other daily as we reach smaller milestones. Taking the time to praise the success of my co-workers is a great way to keep us all motivated."

"I strategically plan my projects from start to finish. I have a status report for all projects that I updated regularly. I plan big campaigns via a critical path schedule and divide them into steps. That way, I remain highly organized and avoid unnecessary stress."

      Stephanie's Answer

Your response shows a clear understanding of prioritization and project management. Since this question explicitly asks how you avoid burnout (which is a critical topic for many major tech companies like Facebook), I suggest including a sentence or two about your self-care strategies (example below.)

"I strategically plan my projects from start to finish. I have a status report for all projects that I update regularly. I plan big campaigns via a critical path schedule and divide them into steps. That way, I remain highly organized and avoid unnecessary stress. When I experience stress, I take a walk or listen to music to get back on track."

"As much as I become eager at my work, I have learned the lesson that it is important to keep an even pace in order to be consistently productive in the long run. So I manage my time thoroughly to ensure that I get regular sleep and exercise and engage in activities that light me up. This is a way for me to maintain the highest level of productivity and focus during the day."

      Stephanie's Answer

Self-care is so important in eliminating burnout, and it sounds like you have created a self-care strategy that truly works for you. Good for you!
