"In my previous role, healthy communication was required to protect the safety of our employees. We transported dangerous goods, and our management required us to take specific workshops on communication and documentation. Because of this, my communication skills are exceptionally strong."

"Yes, I have experience working with co-workers in multiple time zones. Over the Summer, I had a virtual research internship in Germany, where the time difference was 7 hours. I had to plan accordingly with my professor in Germany on when to communicate with him and talk about my progress while also trying to succeed in my research assistant position here. I was also taking a German class through the German Institution. Many of the students were from different time zones, so we had to coordinate with each other during our study session. As a result of this planning, I was able to work on both types of research and the German class."

Tell me about your education.

"I am a big believer in post-secondary education. It adds a lot of value to those newer to the workplace. My post-secondary education was in Communication and Journalism. The courses in this program helped me develop stronger business relationships through professional correspondence. I also learned persuasive writing skills, which have proven incredibly helpful when working on client proposals and negotiations."

"I start by reassigning deadlines by bumping them up earlier. I check the quality of my work regularly with consistency. Once I've finished any part of a project, whether the task was great or small, I proof my work accordingly before moving on. Then I go through it again as a whole at the end. If it is written, I'll read it out loud. If it's numbers or dates, I'll use similar systems to check the quality of the work. I have several systems for just about any work I perform."

On an individual level, when I am not delegating a team and placing those team players according to their skills and work styles, I'd say I typically approach everything from a working-smarter perspective. The only exception is when I need to work hard side by side with the rest of the team to set the pace and boost morale, but that, in a way, is working smarter and harder at the same time, don't you think?"

The transition during their mass-layoff was not handled as professionally as many would have liked; however, I believe the leadership team did their best. I was lucky enough to stay on board with the company, and my experience during the transition was certainly eye-opening. I learned a lot through the process."

They don't expect, nor would they prefer, you to try to reinvent their business or their systems and processes right out of the gate. That's not why they hired you. They hired you for your strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with your other skills. Before you do anything, you need to earn the trust of those in their teams. A new employee should spend the first 90 days building relationships, asking questions, and learning how to do the job and why they do things the way they do is the answer to this question. Without having that valuable information, it will be impossible to make an impact.

I took on more than I could handle. Our team leaders just told me to do the best I could. So, as a team, we got that workload cleaned up and sent off, and I returned to my project, but it was clear I wasn't going to get it in on time. So I put everything together except for one detail, and we sent off what we could, informing our client that the last portion of the report, with all the charts and graphs, wouldn't arrive until the next day. This ended up being fine, but I beat myself up because I was so close. I wanted to stay late. Our leaders told me I'd done good work and demanded I call it a day. So, I did what I was told, but it was hard to let go."
