Gallo Winery, Inc. is looking for individuals who are motivated and driven in their careers, and who take charge of their own development. One of the company's values is innovation. Entry Level Example
"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating from college as an honors student while still working full-time in a related field. I was top of my class, and working full time. This achievement showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and be recognized for my dedication."

Experienced Example
"For two years in a row, I was the top sales leader in my current position. I accomplished this by not only consistently following up with customers but also trusting them as stakeholders in our performance. Whenever I brought in a new hire and trained them as a distributor, I would coach them on the nuance of each client, and the special attention each one needs. But I would also reach out to our customers and ask them how our recruit was doing, and ask if there was anything they needed. I then took their advice to heart and would coach our trainees appropriately, setting them up for success with our clients in the future. This increased our business, established trust, and prompted my clients to say yes anytime we offered them something new."

2. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The primary objective of every interviewer is to get to know every candidate as a person and as a professional. Otherwise, they'll not be able to get an accurate sense of your skill level, capabilities, or personality fit, nor get an accurate sense of how well you'll get along with the rest of their teams and fit into their work culture. So, this introductory question is exactly what it seems at face value. How you answer will help them determine whether you would complement or clash with their teams.

Gallo's website, "Every person is unique, just like every vineyard, every grape, and every bottle of wine is unique. We embrace and celebrate the characteristics and experiences of each person." Tell your story and let your personality shine.

Experienced Example
"I worked with this sales whiz whose numbers were admirable. But his administrative stills were rather lacking. It bothered many of his peers. There was a bit of back-talking, and there was a particular individual who 'led the pack,' so to speak. Yet, ironically, he has some of the poorest sales track records in the department. So, when I noticed this gossip was spreading, and the situation was negatively impacting morale, I talked to the leader of this pack and told them I'd overheard many of his whisperings about our teammate. He then grew defensive and expressed that he was annoyed with having to clean up the sales whiz messes. So I listened, then mirrored his concerns and empathized with him. Then, I asked him one straightforward question. I asked him what he'd done to help the sales whiz out with his administration skills. He asked me what motive he'd have to help him out. I told, him because we're a team, and everyone on the team helps each other out. As soon as I noticed something was distracting him from adhering to our values, by creating a stir and negatively impacting morale, I decided to talk to him. And since he was the first to notice the severity of the sales whiz's administrative mistakes, he was responsible for talking to him, and telling him that there were whisperings spreading about his consistent errors, and that, maybe after offering help, the sales whiz could help him with his lagging sales numbers. He expressed he wasn't good about having such conversations and didn't feel like the right person to do that. So I told him that sounds like a great growth opportunity and asked him if he wanted some advice on how to go about it. Soon they had their talk, and it all worked out, and they both ended up getting some additional training from each other, and today are super close friends helping lead the rest of our teams."

"I love a good Malbec, so Alamos is my house wine. Dark cherry and blackberry with a little spice and a nice velvety aftertaste of vanilla. Perfect. I straight-up prefer Argentinian, Chilean, and Spanish wines. I also frequently have Camerina on special occasions. I prefer a nice blanco tequila over a reposado or anejo any day. You see when I was in Mexico City, I did a tequila tasting tour, where we went to three bars and they each had thimble-sized flights. According to our tour guide, in Mexico City, blanco is synonymous with pure and is the preferred tequila there. And the Camerina Blanco is right up my alley."

Customer Service
11. How do you handle customer complaints?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Gallo Winery, you'll want to showcase your ability to communicate with their customers, on and off the job, in a manner that aligns with their values. One of their company values is integrity. "Be honest and straightforward with each other. Be ethical in your words and actions."
Written by Kevin Downey on November 29th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Your response will not only reflect your customer service skills but also your overall outlook on life. Effective communication involves objectifying the situation rather than the person, promoting understanding, and preventing defensiveness. This approach encourages active listening, mirroring, validation, and empathy. Adapting your communication style to suit others demonstrates flexibility. Highlight your ability to look beyond the customer's perspective and identify potential solutions. Avoid portraying yourself as a victim or expressing an elitist attitude. Communicate openly and transparently, demonstrating your willingness to explore all options before reaching a resolution.
Written by Kevin Downey on November 26th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Any time I have a customer complaint, I make a habit of actively listening, without interrupting, other than to mirror and validate. I want them to feel heard, understood, and cared for. For example, I was delivering a shipment to a customer to set up an end-cap display. But when I arrived, the customer was frustrated with the shipment. They explained that it wasn't the product they wanted and that they ordered another product. However, their reality did not correlate with the ticket. But before raising that point, I took time to listen and told them I would be happy to help in any way I could. I asked more questions to understand the problem. The customer felt the product they wanted sold well and was a personal favorite of their own. I explained to them with transparency how the ordering system worked, and I showed them the ticket. And as soon as the company hits punch on an order, the ticket prints out in our warehouse, with no in-between. I explained, therefore, that it was likely a mis-punch. I then educated them on the product I delivered, how it was a personal favorite of mine, and that it does rather well compared to the other brand. I offered to bring it back, to cancel the order, and we could place a new one, but that would create a delay in the empty end cap being built out. Or, they could see how this end-cap does, and decide if it's something they would like to try again. The customer came around and was comforted and grateful that I took the time to listen and make sense of the issue. They also admitted that it was possible the mistake was on their end. Fortunately, the wine did amazingly well, and now they order both varieties with greater consistency."

"We are honored to be recognized for our employee culture," said Joseph Gallo, Chief Executive Officer of E. & J. Gallo Winery and a second-generation member of the founding family. He added, "Our culture is the result of our company values of respect, integrity, humility, innovation, commitment and teamwork. We seek to live our values each and every day so they can be passed on to ensure our culture thrives and our company continues to succeed. My grandfather Ernest and great uncle Julio Gallo always operated in the spirit of gratitude. We continue that commitment every day, whether giving back to the land, empowering our employees to make an impact, or innovating more sustainable practices."

What You Need to Know
Another of their company values is humility, "Display willingness to learn from each other and from failures as well as successes. Never assume we are at the top of our game or underestimate our competition." So when thinking of a self-perceived weakness, avoid volunteering any skills that are required for the role. Avoid divulging too much personal information, and focus solely on your career progression. Evaluate where you are at with your current career goals, what you need to accomplish next to reach your trajectory, and the milestones you need to reach to progress toward your next goals.

Experienced Example
"Sometimes I have difficulty asking for help from co-workers. I am a go-getter and am anxious to pass the career milestones in my career plan. But I want to do it all on my own, and in the past, I've struggled with having to admit when I've taken on too much and could use a little help. A while back I made a few mistakes, and I took responsibility for them, but it generated a little rework, and I can be hard on myself as well. I've learned it's okay to ask for help, and that's what teamwork is all about after all. I'm also better at time management, know how much I can realistically take on, accounting for when things don't go according to plan."

"I come with a lot of experience. And what I have learned is that no matter where you go or what the company is like, there will always be teammates and clients who are suspicious of someone new, and whether they can trust them to deliver to the standard they've come to expect. So, I anticipate the greatest challenge as earning their trust and proving myself through transparently displaying the strength of my character, living up to my values, and putting in the work. While being the best version of me isn't necessarily difficult, the time it takes to earn the trust can sometimes be difficult to bear. I am a people person and a friend to all, and I am sometimes anxious to earn the friendship of others."

But maintaining that balance requires hiring the right people who are emotionally intelligent and balanced professionals. Experienced Example
"When I worked part-time as a merchandiser, I shared my responsibilities with four other shift workers who were each responsible for passing the torch to the next. When I first came on board, the messaging between teams was a little messy, and productivity was lost when there was no indication of what was accomplished before my shift. So, I created a very simple solution of having a log book. When each one of us ended our shift, we would write in the book what we'd accomplished, and if we needed to know more, all we had to do was read back through the earlier logs. This worked quite well and was very effective in enabling us to hit the ground running with each shift. Everyone's productivity improved. And even though we rarely worked together, we felt like more of a team than ever before. Soon our reports were filled with messages of gratitude and encouragement as well."

"I noticed the numbers were off on a shipment I was delivering to a customer. They had ordered 30 cases, and we were only delivering 25. When I made the delivery, I let the customer know we would deliver the additional cases the next day, and I called my manager to find out what went wrong. My manager and the client appreciated my sense of urgency and attention to detail. When I got back to the warehouse, I personally saw to it that the additional five cases were picked and set aside. Then, after thinking about it, I realized their location was too far off my route home, so I loaded those five cases into the backseat of my car and delivered them on the way home. All's well that ends well."

"Since customers are so much more concerned about their long-term health, I had an idea and asked my manager if, when they had the time, they'd be willing to hear out my idea and whether they'd considered it before or not. They said they had the time now. And I mentioned how resveratrol is in red wine, and it also comes in supplement form. I suggested that by somehow advertising the well-documented health benefits of one glass of wine a night would appeal to the more disciplined drinkers or those who rarely drink at all for health reasons. I suggested that even though it wouldn't result in the hugest reward for effort, a nominal increase still pushes the boundaries. They thought that it was a novel idea, and said they would pass it on to the CMO, who loved it and ran with the concept. They created a great campaign, and sales did increase by 2% during the time the campaign was running."

How you answer will inform them of whether you are responsible for the company's resources or if you take the easiest path out of a tricky situation without fully considering the impact of your actions. It also stands to inform them a little more about your brand of innovation. As Stephanie Gallo, the Chief Marketing Officer once said, "As you accelerate and as you grow in your career, the decisions become harder, and you have to make tough decisions each and every day. The only thing that will get you through it is if you can go to bed at night, and you can put your head on the pillow knowing that you made the decision in accordance to your own personal values."

What You Need to Know
Think of a time that you solved a problem, creatively. Were you happy with the outcome? What were the steps that you took to ensure your success? Does the example align with what E. & J. That's why you'll find innovation around every corner at Gallo."

Answer Example
"In my current company, we saw a decrease in clients due to the pandemic. Just like the rest of the world, we were in unchartered waters. We knew most of our retailers didn't qualify as essential workers, so I approached my bosses with the idea of offering a discount wine box subscription. We weren't allowed to distribute directly to the public, but I suggested we come up with a subsidiary business model online only, and if we fast-tracked it, maybe we could generate a portion of the revenue we were losing. They gave the go-ahead on the research side of it, what it would take, and the best route, so we started. I made some calls, and with the rest of the team, we produced some initial numbers of what we might be looking at. Then things moved forward, and we did quite well. We called it, The Middleman Wine Club."

But, when something unpredictable occurs and may potentially delay me from getting to work on time, the second I suspect there is a possibility of that, I call in to work to give them a heads-up. What You Need to Know
Most businesses are interested in hiring candidates who are likely to approach their first days as a new employee with humility and an eagerness to learn and build strong working relationships. Stephanie Gallo, the Chief Marketing Officer, is quoted as saying, "Through our wines and spirits, we connect with people across communities, cultures, and continents, from our employees to our consumers and all the partners in between. Empathy, curiosity, and learning agility are critical skill sets if you want to be successful. We embrace and celebrate the characteristics and experiences of each person. Empathy is absolutely critical. Every person is unique, just like every vineyard, every grape and every bottle of wine is unique."

Experienced Example
"At first, I passively introduce myself to each member of the team I am entering. I do the same with any pre-existing clientele. To a certain level, I keep my head down and showcase a strong work ethic, and that I will reliably contribute to the team. Then, as I am learning, I lean on my team for their insights, approaching my learning with humility, and giving everyone a voice. This helps me learn what I can expect from each teammate, and more often than not, their insights are incredibly valuable. Beyond that, I try to make friends with everyone I work with, and occasionally invite them to join me for lunch."
