9. Is compensation the most important factor for you when taking a new job?
What You Need to Know
On their careers page, they detail what they offer their employees in benefits and perks, including retirement and financial wellness planning, health, and continuing education, among many others. Most of their job postings clearly state their range of compensation as well. Yet, this question isn't opening the door to discuss salary but rather aiming to assess your true motive for pursuing a career with them. Primarily, they are trying to determine whether your loyalty has a price or if your motive is finding the right job with the right company to further a fulfilling career. Talk to the interviewer about the most important factors when considering a new job. As they say on their site, what they have to offer is for you to "explore your passions while making an impact through meaningful work." Consider this while formulating your response.

"Several factors are important to me when taking a job. Compensation is a driving component, but isn't mutually exclusive to working with a company with a like-minded set of core values, the potential for development and growth from within, mission statement, culture, benefits, and location."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
2nd Experienced Example
"Salary is a driving component for everyone, and I believe everyone should be awarded their professional worth and never sell themselves short. Those who actualize it create and regularly revise a five-year career plan, breaking those greater far-off macro goals into more attainable micro goals. When examining the future of your career and where you'd like it to take you, consider how the development programs, experiential learning, formal training, and coaching and mentoring opportunities within Cummins can help get you there. Communication
11. How do you explain complicated concepts to those who may not understand?
What You Need to Know
Consider what Cummins says on the topic and try to align your approach to theirs; "OUR VOICE: GUIDING PRINCIPLES - KEEP IT HUMAN. We use everyday language. Friendly. Straight-forward. Clear. We express ourselves naturally, but also with wit, passion, and charm. BE THE EXPERT. We can speak with authority because, with more than 100 years of experience, we've earned it. We use facts, figures, and technical language accurately. We know our stuff. TELL IT LIKE IT IS. We don't have to hype up our messages. We tell it like it is. Confident. Matter of fact. When it comes to communications, we're direct."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to know that you can adapt your communication style to others and how effectively you can say the most using the fewest words. This includes explaining complex ideas in layman's terms. Offer examples of how you break down information to make it more easily digestible for the average person.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Experienced Example
"In my opinion, when someone cannot explain a concept simply, they might be rationalizing it in real-time, which could convey they don't understand the subject they are speaking on well enough to be considered an authority. So I try to keep it simple. I'll make sure I am thoroughly versed on what I am going to explain, have all the answers, can answer any questions succinctly, and use analogies effectively to get my message across. Don't speak with authority unless you are an authority on a subject. Otherwise, be mature enough to say you don't know, and you will find out. Then have the integrity to follow through on your word."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Answer Example
"I took a course on creating effective info-graphics and learned that 65% of people are visual learners and visual components are 43% persuasive learners. So I often find visual aids valuable tools when relaying complicated concepts, especially when giving a presentation."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Communication
12. Tell me about a time you improved communication between yourself and a co-worker or client.
What You Need to Know
Possessing the skills to improve communication in the workplace could set you up as an asset. Being a highly skilled communicator means ensuring the message you send is the message received. It is being able to identify when someone is not as skilled as you are and adapting your communication style to theirs. It means removing emotion and focusing on the situation. It means active listening and mirroring. As Cummins states on their website, "As people, we all speak differently. It's one of the things that makes us unique. Our brand is like that too. Cummins has a voice, a way of talking that our customers like and expect. When we speak on behalf of our brand, whether it's an advertisement or an email, the Cummins voice is the way we do it."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Answer Example
"In my current position, I have one client who was a messy communicator. If I asked two questions, this person would answer one. Eventually, I learned they viewed not knowing as a sign of weakness, so they would defensively avoid acknowledging any question they didn't have an answer for. I began to ask them questions in a different way. For example, I would say, 'Do you know if...' and they would say yes or no. We would then go from there. This solution was an effective method of communication for that particular client."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Experienced Example
"Recently, I worked with a supervisor who continued to change direction with our work. Our team was prioritizing one project, heading down one path, and before we knew it, the supervisor expected us to go in the opposite direction. They kept second-guessing themselves but would assert themselves in such a way as to exert their command. However, productivity dropped. So, as a team, we resolved to hold a daily huddle to touch base and ensure two-way communication between our team and the supervisor. We'd inform them of our progress, give them the full big picture of our timeframes as a group, and provide them with confidence in our direction. Soon, by self-managing as a unit, we continued on course."

Critical Thinking
17. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewer is curious about what your answer will say about you as a professional and what it will reveal about your character. How you manage situations that could impact your attendance will inform them of your work ethic, your integrity, and how team-oriented you are. A professional plans to the best of their ability while maintaining an awareness that everything may not always go according to plan, and planning for that as well.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
How to Answer
Planning properly involves proactively figuring out damage control, reducing the negative impacts of the occasional contingency, and exercising strong time management skills, whereas explaining the circumstances of your attendance issues by blaming traffic, car breakdowns, or familial concerns says nothing of your professionalism and declares your unreliability. Describe the measures you take to prepare for your mornings - laying out your clothes the night before, making sure you have a full tank of gas and a packed lunch, listening to traffic alerts, etcetera. Explain that you aim to give your work a heads-up any time there is a possibility you may be late while attesting to your positive track record.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
1st Experienced Example
"I have always lived by the adage "if you're on time, you're late," and I've implemented that into my life and my routine. I lay out my clothes the night before, prepare my morning coffee and lunch, set two alarms, and manage my morning to ensure I arrive to work early. When I get in my car, I feel comfortable knowing I filled the tank the night before. If something goes wrong, I will call into work to give them a heads-up and keep giving them updates until we are sure one way or another."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
2nd Experienced Example
"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. Just last week, a bridge was blocked due to a car accident that happened right in front of me. I was unhurt, but I was also blocked in. They closed the bridge, and I was trapped there for hours. I called my boss as soon as it happened to let them know I was undoubtedly going to be late. I was able to suggest how to delegate my organized workload to other employees so that our clients were not left hanging for callbacks and quotes. It all worked out in the end."

Customer Service
18. How would you describe your relationship with your customers or clients?
What You Need to Know
They are looking to recruit the best employees who already fit the mold. They need to ensure the candidate they choose has a head start and will need little training to bring them up to speed. Whoever they hire, once they are brought on board, will effectively serve as a representative of their brand. As a representative of a brand, when explaining to an acquaintance or a stranger what you do for a living or what the company you work for does, you should always approach every conversation as you would with a potential customer.
"Our business starts and ends with our customers. First, we get to know them, really know them. Then, we put their businesses at the heart of ours. We make their challenges our challenges. We make their goals our goals. We work with them, shoulder to shoulder because the spirit of partnership is in our blood. And no matter who they are, they'll get the very best we have to give."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
How to Answer

I most definitely value my clients and am putting in the work to nurture those relationships as much as possible."

22. What was the biggest change you've dealt with in your career?
What You Need to Know
This question explores your perspective, your professionalism, and how adaptable you are to change. Everyone faces change in their career from time to time. This offers you an opportunity to showcase your ability to adapt, support your teams and your leaders, keep your eye on the big picture, and how you navigate potential obstacles professionally. Draw on translatable experiences where you exemplified these traits and shined.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
1st Experienced Example
"The biggest change I have faced in my career so far was when my previous company went through a major merger. We had to adapt to new processes and adjust to changes in management. These both posed their own unique challenges. From the start, I asked to meet with our new manager. I explained that I would do anything I could to support their vision, act as an ambassador, and communicate the big picture to the rest of our teams. They shared their vision with me, and in the end, I stayed true to my word. This reduced speculations, job insecurity, and dissent. We got everyone on the same page, and it worked out well for the company from a financial perspective, so the changes were well worth the challenges we faced initially."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
2nd Experienced Example
"The biggest change I have dealt with in my career is when my company closed their PA location, and I was asked to relocate to VA. It was a risk on my part, but I chose to follow the company to its new location. It paid off as I continued another five years of success there and furthered my career goals, which ultimately prepared me for this interview and qualified me for this position. So I view that as a success."

23. Do you have experience working in a unionized environment? What are your thoughts on union-based roles?
What You Need to Know
Many Cummins, Inc. employees are represented by unions in different branches and locations. Depending on your point of view, this can be a good or a bad thing. But the same could be true regarding the views of Cummins's executive branch or the personal view of your interviewer. Discussing your views on Unions in an interview should put your communication skills to the test. Proceed with caution and speak on the subject diplomatically.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
The Goal
There have been clashes and strikes at many of Cummins Inc.'s varying locations over the last decade. Cummins has experienced conflicts with the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers, Cummins' Teamster-represented workers, Deisel Workers Union, and Machinist Union, to name a few. Read as many articles as possible and educate yourself on both sides' perspectives to assist you with this balancing act. Your research should guide your approach to this in a non-partial, benevolent, and diplomatic way that covers every point of view in the most general manner.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Experienced Example
"I have not worked in a unionized environment; however, I have heard many opinions on the pros and cons. Some say they encourage a lack of innovation and productivity; some say that Union dues are unnecessary, and others praise how they serve as a way to ensure continuity in the workplace and offer security to employees. I suppose it depends on the Union and the individual. I am neutral on the subject. I just want to get to work and put my all in."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Answer Example
"I currently work in a unionized environment. I have misgivings about it, yet I have seen the union help some people. I guess it depends on the situation. But I have a lot of integrity and believe in staying true to my word. That's just me. I can't say the same for every union leader I've seen."

I am excited to apply my leadership successes to this role with Cummins, Inc., and meet all the requirements listed in the job description. Leadership
25. Tell me about a time you helped a co-worker accomplish an important goal.
What You Need to Know
Cummins is looking to recruit the future leaders of their company. They are looking to recruit "the best of the best. As your professional skill set flourishes over time, you can move into leadership and discover amazing career options all around the world." Being goal-oriented and determined is essential to your success as a professional. However, being singularly focused on your own goals displays you as ambitious and determined but says nothing of your leadership potential. A leader identifies every opportunity to promote and foster the success of every member of the team. Their success is your success. So before your interview, determine what it is you've done, outside of pursuing your own goals, to develop, coach, or help out the other members of your teams and to ensure that everyone is successful in pursuing your mutual goals.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Last month, I hired a new employee who struggled significantly with sales. I sat him down and realized that he didn't understand the product. We spent a few hours together over that next week learning the product. In the end, his sales increased by 64%, and he was significantly more confident. This increased team morale as well. After that, they found their confidence and started fitting in with the rest of the team."

2nd Answer Example
"My nickname at my current employer is Coach. I am always helping my co-workers accomplish their goals. We should set each other up for success, and I try to make the road to success as clear to everyone as possible. When they succeed, I succeed. There is no I in 'team.' This is the heart of teamwork - being willing to help others achieve their goals."

26. When have you effectively delegated tasks to your employees?
What You Need to Know
Whether you are in a leadership role or not, being able to delegate successfully to your teams is a skill. It requires clear communication, understanding and adapting to the communication style of others, and taking every measure that the message sent is the message received. It also requires ensuring those you delegate to are up to the task and that you are playing on their strengths.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
How to Answer
Understanding their work environment and culture, try to incorporate their language and keywords into your response while staying true to your nature and voice. "GROW. SUCCEED. LEAD - Cummins will help you grow into a key contributor and future leader at Cummins. Experiential learning, formal training, along with coaching and mentoring by our business leaders, are all designed to help you grow into a key contributor and future leader at Cummins."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Experienced Example
"I'm currently not in a leadership role, but there have been times when I took on extra projects due to an employee being out at length and then quitting without notice. I did well, but to ensure all timelines were met, I delegated some less essential tasks to others on our team who were well-equipped for the task. To delegate effectively, you first need to understand each employee's strengths. I always delegate to someone's strength so that they will organically know how to complete the task. If they are going to help you out, you have to help them succeed in return."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Answer Example
"To date, my role hasn't included a lot of delegation. However, I have been responsible for taking the workload and dictating who will take on which task, such as region, customer focus, or manufacturer. In either case, I believe it is important to recognize that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I believe it's important to identify those, provide growth opportunities, and prepare them for their next role."

27. When managing a project, which tasks do you leave for last? Why?
What You Need to Know
This is not so much a trick question; it is an assessment of your skill level. Suggesting in an interview that you leave the tasks that you like least for last will speak to poor planning and not say much about your work ethic. Whereas remaining mindful of your time management and leaving those least pressing tasks which might be the easiest to delegate for last, should the need arise, displays advanced project management skills, leadership potential, and a strong focus on the needs of the team over one's personal preference. Before your interview, reflect on your skills, those instances where you most thrived, and how you would relay your approach to demonstrate integrity (one of their core values) and excellence (another of their core values).
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"If given a choice, I would leave my documentation tasks for last. I take notes so everything is fresh in my mind, and I can easily compile those notes and document last minute if need be. While the project is underway, frequently bouncing back and forth between tasks, such as from documentation to the more pressing aspects of a project, can cause you to lose momentum and productivity."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I tend to wait to work on the aspect of the project that would be the easiest to delegate, should contingencies cause us to run behind. You always need to be prepared to be a resource, and asking for help is part of this. So if you are going to ask for help, make sure the person you are asking is as set up for success as possible."

Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Pro Tip

2) Mark what is urgent or important. Take into account deadlines and meetings.
3) Order each task based on effort and estimated value. Considering due dates and how long it will take to do each item (also considering how much time you have).
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
Answer Example
"I keep running lists of everything I need to do, big or small. Mostly because I love crossing things off the to-do list, but also because it helps me keep track of everything. 2nd Answer Example

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Stress can often be a regular part of the day-to-day work experience. However, this question is intended to not only evaluate how well you cope with stress but to evaluate your emotional maturity as well. In other words, are you able to manage your stress, or do you allow your stress to govern you? How you answer could indicate whether this is the right career for you.
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022

"I never allow my stress to govern me. But that doesn't mean I don't stress. I keep a cool head and keep problem-solving until the work is done. However, I get most stressed when things are entirely out of my control and I can't help or assist in any way. For example, working on a group project, I finished my part ahead of schedule and helped those running behind. However, I was frustrated and stressed when a burned-out coworker refused to hustle and refused my help. But I just hunkered down and accepted what I couldn't control as our leaders tried to fix the situation. I am responsible for my actions, and I did the best I could."
Written by Kevin Downey on December 10th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"My stress is often triggered due to my drive and desire to aim for perfection. But when I feel stressed, I focus that energy on my work and hit my goals. You gotta turn everything into a positive whenever you can."
