"With authorized dealers and sales and service centers across the globe, are there opportunities for travel or relocating to other locations? If so, what is the road map for that with one's career?"

The last thing you want to do when answering this question is to ask questions you could have answered on your own - yet another reason to do your homework in advance. What types of activities keep you busy outside of work?

"I have a variety of hobbies that keep me busy outside work hours. First, I have two children who are involved in basketball and gymnastics. I also play in a baseball beer league, volunteer at our community church, and like to read."

Having hobbies and interests outside work is a vital part of maintaining a healthy work/life balance. "I fully agree with your company motto. Efficiency and productivity go hand in hand. If I had a workplace motto, it would be a quote by Jim Rohn: 'Don't wish it were easier. Wish you were better.' I am a big advocate for continued education and constant achievement."

The interviewer wants some insight into your workplace values and the makeup of your character. This question tests how you would define your brand as a professional. Before your interview, conduct research on Cummins. Try to incorporate the style of those keywords when answering this question. Examine the value they place on the branding strategies.

How can we motivate you on the job?

"Praise and recognition for a job well done. I like to know I am valued for my efforts and not taken for granted. In my current position, we have a leaderboard, which creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me."

"I would love to give myself a 10/10 for honesty, but truthfully, nobody is 100% honest all the time. I will give myself a nine because I always do my best to be as honest as possible. I have good intentions, operate with transparency, and stay true to my word. I hold myself accountable for my actions and am very honest with myself."

How you answer this question will speak to your emotional maturity and how honest you are with others and yourself. "I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I am a recent grad from Columbia University and have spent the past 12 months traveling the world. I returned to the US last month and have been actively looking for work for the past few weeks. I am looking forward to getting into the routine of a career again."

"Several factors are important to me when taking a job. Compensation is a driving component, but isn't mutually exclusive to working with a company with a like-minded set of core values, the potential for development and growth from within, mission statement, culture, benefits, and location."

Yet, this question isn't opening the door to discuss salary but rather aiming to assess your true motive for pursuing a career with them. Primarily, they are trying to determine whether your loyalty has a price or if your motive is finding the right job with the right company to further a fulfilling career. Talk to the interviewer about the most important factors when considering a new job. As they say on their site, what they have to offer is for you to "explore your passions while making an impact through meaningful work." Consider this while formulating your response.

"Salary is a driving component for everyone, and I believe everyone should be awarded their professional worth and never sell themselves short. Yet accepting the highest bid should never be one's only motivator. Job satisfaction, work/life balance, career growth, and working with a company that values what you bring to their culture should never be overlooked."

What are your career aspirations beyond this job?

"I have some pretty lofty career aspirations, and after researching your organization and learning more about this position, I feel that this role fits with my future aspirations. I am excited about the employee development programs and the opportunities to be mentored by the company's leaders. I would love to see myself promoted based on my hard work and results, eventually managing my branch, then becoming a regional director at another one of Cummins's global locations."

How do you explain complicated concepts to those who may not understand?

"In my opinion, when someone cannot explain a concept simply, they might be rationalizing it in real-time, which could convey they don't understand the subject they are speaking on well enough to be considered an authority. So I try to keep it simple. I'll make sure I am thoroughly versed on what I am going to explain, have all the answers, can answer any questions succinctly, and use analogies effectively to get my message across. Don't speak with authority unless you are an authority on a subject. Otherwise, be mature enough to say you don't know, and you will find out. Then have the integrity to follow through on your word."

Tell me about a time you improved communication between yourself and a co-worker or client.

"In my current position, I have one client who was a messy communicator. If I asked two questions, this person would answer one. Eventually, I learned they viewed not knowing as a sign of weakness, so they would defensively avoid acknowledging any question they didn't have an answer for. I began to ask them questions in a different way. For example, I would say, 'Do you know if...' and they would say yes or no. We would then go from there. This solution was an effective method of communication for that particular client."

Possessing the skills to improve communication in the workplace could set you up as an asset. Being a highly skilled communicator means ensuring the message you send is the message received. It is being able to identify when someone is not as skilled as you are and adapting your communication style to theirs. It means removing emotion and focusing on the situation. Our team was prioritizing one project, heading down one path, and before we knew it, the supervisor expected us to go in the opposite direction. They kept second-guessing themselves but would assert themselves in such a way as to exert their command. However, productivity dropped. So, as a team, we resolved to hold a daily huddle to touch base and ensure two-way communication between our team and the supervisor. We'd inform them of our progress, give them the full big picture of our timeframes as a group, and provide them with confidence in our direction. Soon, by self-managing as a unit, we continued on course."

How would you describe your written communication skills?

"I have an excellent grasp of language, can write concisely, and am adept at saying the most in as few words as possible. I would rate myself as a 9/10."

The interviewer uses this question to assess the lengths to which you've researched Cummins, Inc. before attending the interview. The more you know, the more it reveals your enthusiasm and investment in this opportunity and your propensity to go above and beyond. Read through the entire company website, and familiarize yourself with its products and history. Examine their company history and identify all of their advertised marks of pride. Then deliver your answer with enthusiasm.

I also learned A, B, and C (use specific examples). Is there anything else you would like to share about your machinery?"

"I have a consistent history of exceeding my targets and goals. I've been promoted two times in the last year, which is nearly unheard of in my current company. In addition, I have excellent cold-calling skills, which I will put to work immediately after being hired by your company. But most importantly, I believe the road to self-improvement is never-ending, and that's why I want to work for Cummins. You say you are looking to recruit the best people and make them better. That's why I am here."

Pay attention to the nuance of this question. They aren't asking you why you feel you are the best candidate out there. They are asking you why you are the best candidate for them. Their website careers page advertises all of their offerings as an employer. They also indicate who they are looking for (the best people), just as they list the core competencies on their job listings. So the goal of this question is not only to advertise how great you are but how you are the right fit for them, along with all you have to offer.

"I believe I'm the best candidate for Cummins because of my decade of experience working for one of your competitors. Yet what brings me here is our shared values. Cummins' values set them apart from their competitors, and this is important to me. I know I can make an immediate and long-term impact, and already feel as if I am one of the team."

How does Cummins stand out from the other companies you are interviewing with?

"Your equipment is superior, and your reputation is unmatched. Your innovation goes beyond that, especially concerning unconventional flexible work environments and your emphasis on developing your employees. I am very excited to work for a company with such a substantial track record as a pioneer."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I have always lived by the adage "if you're on time, you're late," and I've implemented that into my life and my routine. I lay out my clothes the night before, prepare my morning coffee and lunch, set two alarms, and manage my morning to ensure I arrive to work early. When I get in my car, I feel comfortable knowing I filled the tank the night before. If something goes wrong, I will call into work to give them a heads-up and keep giving them updates until we are sure one way or another."

Your interviewer is curious about what your answer will say about you as a professional and what it will reveal about your character. How you manage situations that could impact your attendance will inform them of your work ethic, your integrity, and how team-oriented you are. A professional plans to the best of their ability while maintaining an awareness that everything may not always go according to plan, and planning for that as well.

Planning properly involves proactively figuring out damage control, reducing the negative impacts of the occasional contingency, and exercising strong time management skills, whereas explaining the circumstances of your attendance issues by blaming traffic, car breakdowns, or familial concerns says nothing of your professionalism and declares your unreliability. Describe the measures you take to prepare for your mornings - laying out your clothes the night before, making sure you have a full tank of gas and a packed lunch, listening to traffic alerts, etcetera. "I stay calm and composed when issues arise. Just last week, a bridge was blocked due to a car accident that happened right in front of me. I was unhurt, but I was also blocked in. They closed the bridge, and I was trapped there for hours. I called my boss as soon as it happened to let them know I was undoubtedly going to be late. I was able to suggest how to delegate my organized workload to other employees so that our clients were not left hanging for callbacks and quotes. It all worked out in the end."

How would you describe your relationship with your customers or clients?

"I consider most of my clients friends because, to get to know them, I have to be transparent to build trust. Customer and client relationships should always be open and honest. I believe that the more upfront and transparent you are with your clients, the more likely they are to return. You are earning their brand loyalty, and it takes a lot to maintain it. I most definitely value my clients and am putting in the work to nurture those relationships as much as possible."

They are looking to recruit the best employees who already fit the mold. They need to ensure the candidate they choose has a head start and will need little training to bring them up to speed. Whoever they hire, once they are brought on board, will effectively serve as a representative of their brand. "Leaving Company X was due to a merger, and my department was phased out. Company Y was a seasonal role and served as an interim while I prepared to relocate here, where there was a greater opportunity."

Most hiring managers consider candidates having held more than two jobs in the past five years as a potential red flag. It could suggest a lack of commitment, career dissatisfaction, or potential personality clashes. Whatever your circumstance, be prepared to provide context to your career progression and work history. Avoid speaking poorly of your previous employers. "I only worked in my previous role for a year due to a major car accident, which left me hospitalized for several months. I was critical to this small business, and as a result, they closed up shop while I was out. Then the partner of that firm tried an additional startup, which never got off the ground. Since then, I have made progressive moves to advance in my field of expertise by furthering my education. I am now looking for a more established company that I can grow with long-term and contribute value to for many years to come."

How do you feel about working in a diverse and inclusive environment?

"In all honesty, I think I would feel uncomfortable working in an environment with no diversity. Not to mention, that kind of environment would likely do very little to further my career goals. I need to work in an environment with diverse views and perspectives. We all learn from each other, develop each other, and help each other succeed. The more varied the perspectives, the more innovative the team."

"The machinery I am most experienced with is A, B, and C. I am an expert in these types of machinery, which I understand Cummins, Inc. develops. Are there any other types of machinery you are looking for experience for this position beyond what is listed in the job description? If so, are you looking for this role to evolve into something else?"

What was the biggest change you've dealt with in your career?

"The biggest change I have faced in my career so far was when my previous company went through a major merger. We had to adapt to new processes and adjust to changes in management. These both posed their own unique challenges. From the start, I asked to meet with our new manager. I explained that I would do anything I could to support their vision, act as an ambassador, and communicate the big picture to the rest of our teams. They shared their vision with me, and in the end, I stayed true to my word. This reduced speculations, job insecurity, and dissent. We got everyone on the same page, and it worked out well for the company from a financial perspective, so the changes were well worth the challenges we faced initially."

This question explores your perspective, your professionalism, and how adaptable you are to change. Everyone faces change in their career from time to time. This offers you an opportunity to showcase your ability to adapt, support your teams and your leaders, keep your eye on the big picture, and how you navigate potential obstacles professionally. "The biggest change I have dealt with in my career is when my company closed their PA location, and I was asked to relocate to VA. It was a risk on my part, but I chose to follow the company to its new location. It paid off as I continued another five years of success there and furthered my career goals, which ultimately prepared me for this interview and qualified me for this position. So I view that as a success."

Do you have experience working in a unionized environment? What are your thoughts on union-based roles?

"I have not worked in a unionized environment; however, I have heard many opinions on the pros and cons. Some say they encourage a lack of innovation and productivity; some say that Union dues are unnecessary, and others praise how they serve as a way to ensure continuity in the workplace and offer security to employees. I suppose it depends on the Union and the individual. I am neutral on the subject. I just want to get to work and put my all in."

Many Cummins, Inc. employees are represented by unions in different branches and locations. Depending on your point of view, this can be a good or a bad thing. But the same could be true regarding the views of Cummins's executive branch or the personal view of your interviewer. "If given a choice, I would leave my documentation tasks for last. I take notes so everything is fresh in my mind, and I can easily compile those notes and document last minute if need be. While the project is underway, frequently bouncing back and forth between tasks, such as from documentation to the more pressing aspects of a project, can cause you to lose momentum and productivity."
