"I am so glad you pointed out your need for diversity at Centura Health, Inc.. I greatly value diversity. I grew up in a fairly homogeneous town in Montana. When I hit my 20's, it was so important to me to learn about other cultures. I worked with community volunteer organizations in Peru, inner-city Chicago, and Russia."

Centura Health was initially looking for someone with 5 years' experience in a similar role. Considering you have just 2 years' experience, would you be willing to accept this position at a lower salary?

"I would be happy to earn my way to the top compensation level if required. I do assure you that, despite my being shy of experience by a couple of years, I am a top performer and you would not be disappointed in my performance."

Are you willing to earn your way up if the interviewer does not want to offer you top compensation? Discuss with the interviewer what you would expect for compensation if offered this position.

"I understand I do not quite meet the qualifications of experience you are looking for and am willing to be compensated in adjustment to that fact. However, I do look forward to proving my worth to Centura Health, Inc. in hopes to be considered for the median salary for the role."

Do you think it is possible to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader?

"I think that it is possible to be a great team member, even when disagreeing with the leader. It's all in how you maintain respect for each other despite the difference in opinion."

The interviewer wants to know that you can be diplomatic in the workplace, even when you may not agree with your leader. Show the interviewer that it is possible for you to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader from time to time. Explain that you believe everyone is entitled to their own professional opinion, yet capable of maintaining respect for each other at the same time. Show that even if you disagree with the final decision they make, you support the direction the team is heading.

"I believe that being a good team member is more about attitude than it is about compatibility. You do not need to agree with everyone 100% of the time, to be effective in your job."

As a faith based organization, Centura Health welcomes promoting the healing of individuals through all types of spirituality. Have you experienced faith based healing first-hand during your career?

"Having spent a time in my career working in palliative care for individuals that were in the final stages of life, the chaplains that I worked side by side with at times had amazing effects on the patients and their families. Having a loved one within days, hours or minutes of passing away is a time filled with almost every human emotion. Watching the chaplains bring remembrance and the power of prayer into a patient's room in these moments really had a lasting impact on all by the patients side. Even after a patient passed, I was often left with a sense of a higher power at work and felt much more at ease as the nurse by the bedside."

Being a faith based Catholic healthcare organization, Centura Health puts an emphasis on the importance of this healing and is open and welcome to a variety of faiths within their hospital and clinic walls. Rate your problem solving skills from 1-10. How do you justify your rating?

"I rate my problem-solving skills as an 8/10. I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as efficient as I would like to be but all in all, I do feel that my problem-solving skills are above average. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my fast reflexes when a problem arises, and they would also say that I remain calm under pressure."

The interviewer wants to know how you would rate your problem-solving skills. Of course, you want to give yourself a strong rating; however, it's essential that you remain realistic. Everyone has room to learn and improve! Be sure to justify your score as well.

"I would say I get a solid 8.3 on a scale of 10. Seems weird to give myself something like a .3, but I think of it as an 83%, which is a B- teetering on a solid B. It's a solid grade, with definite room for improvement, since I'm certainly not perfect. The reason for the B-/B grade would be that I'm quick to take action and figure out the solution as I go, but sometimes I could benefit from taking a moment to pause and reflect or gather other contributors before taking action. That said, I believe I generally get the best outcome possible when faced with a challenge."

In your job, what are some ways that you help promote wellness with the patients that you see? Why is this important?

"As a nurse, I am a firm believer in the wholeness of the body having a significant impact on overall health of an individual. And even as a nurse in Orthopedics, I still don't hesitate to promote wellness with the patients that I work with. Whether a particular patient is coming out of a hip replacement surgery or a simple foot fracture, the exercise and rehab I promote can help them in ways beyond treating their initial injury and I never hesitate to talk about the importance of exercise and living an active life. Many patients I see suffered their injuries due to living a sedentary lifestyle and if I see this is the case with a patient, I take extra measures to promote healthy choices."

No matter what position you hold in the clinic or hospital setting, promoting the health and well-being of the patients in your facility should be of high importance and Centura Health fully believes in this promotion. Striving for total health and well-being should be the goal of any patient, but the fact is that most patients need the guidance of their healthcare providers to give them that extra push. What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

Are you pretty flexible in your ability to work in most environments? Have you experienced a position where the atmosphere wasn't conducive to your productivity? Be sure to know the type of situation offered in this position prior, to the interview. If you aren't completely clear on the workplace environment or culture, kindly ask the interviewer to expand on the work environment for you.

"I prefer to focus on the positive, so if it's okay, I would like to share with you what my ideal work environment looks like. My ideal environment is organized, collaborative, positive, energetic, and encouraging. I love working with like-minded people who set challenging goals for themselves. I thrive when I work for supervisors who encourage curiosity and creativity in problem-solving."

Talk about a time where new education benefited you in your career. What impact did this have on your work?

"Last year, I attended a pediatric radiology CME event and it really opened my eyes to new techniques and ways of imaging pediatric patients. With our hospital opening a new pediatric inpatient unit, a fellow Rad Tech and I attended and we are now the go to techs for pediatric imaging in our department. I love the fact that I can be a life long learner in the healthcare field and I would take any opportunities available with Centura Health to better my skills."

At Centura Health, education is an avenue for ethical decision making and your interviewer will be looking for you to talk about a time where furthering your education in your career benefited the way you care for patients. Whether it was through reading an article, attending a CME event or taking a class, stress to your interviewer that you are always open to learning opportunities that help you become a better employee and caregiver.

"As a member of the APNA, attending the national conference and being among Psychiatric Nurses from across the country is always a great learning opportunity. It was there a couple of years ago that I attended a seminar on new restraint products and their proper use. Because of attending this and making recommendations to my director, we are now using some great new restraint beds and protective helmets on our unit that are impacting patient and employee safety in a great way."

Think about a difficult boss, professor or coworker. What made him or her difficult? How did you successfully interact with this person?

"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he would walk into the facility, employees would quietly announce that he was in the building, so that everyone could be prepared for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do a lot of good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."

Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize there are some folks out there who are quite difficult to please. Think about that one person at work who is seen as hard to please. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and what their relationship was with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone and be sure to end your response on a positive note.

"In my previous position, I did have a coworker who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated coworker created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks when it came to group projects. It didn't take much time before our department head noticed this particular individual was slacking. I feel like, in most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

If Centura Health hired you today, what would you accomplish first?

"When we were speaking earlier, you mentioned that you were urgently seeking to improve the level of patient care and compassion at this facility. I want to offer my strong skills when it comes to building patient rapport and help to improve the satisfaction of everyone that uses the services of Centura Health. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal on how you will make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer what your impact goal is, should you be the successful candidate. If you want to make an impact with your answer, refer to the immediate needs of the company such as increasing budgets, or improving patient care, for instance.

"This question is a delicate one, and you need to show respect for the onboarding process, then give a moderately ambitious project that you could execute. This concept is often called your 'value proposition' in marketing. "Hire me because I'll do X." But remember this is your campaign promise, if hired, it will likely be your first target to hit and depending on the environment, it could make or break you. The best approach is to give a functional analysis of the employers' needs and your skills."

Ethical decision making is an important value here at Centura Health and we always promote letting ethics be our guide in important decisions. What ethical standards do you hold near and dear to your heart in your work?

"In all honesty, I think my personal ethical beliefs really helped me pursue a career as a Physician Assistant to help advocate and provide justice for patient rights. For me, patient autonomy in decision making is something I take a personal stake in with my patients. By educating my patients on treatment options, while highlighting the positives and potential negative, they are able to make their own decisions in their care and this is important for them. I am also a firm believer in patient fairness and justice when it comes to resources being used across all groups in society. I am an advocate for low income and uninsured patients receiving needed care and do my best to work with this patient population."

Moral principles in the healthcare setting are held near and dear to the hear of all individuals that have chosen a career path in the industry. While there is no wrong answer for this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you have specific ethical standards when it comes to patient care. To really impress your interviewer, focus your ethics on patient care, patient rights and showing respect for others in the clinical setting.

"Even though we don't provide direct care to patients in the maintenance department, the detail and care we put into our work and interactions indirectly effect a patients stay in our hospital or a visit to our clinic. I take a great amount of pride in thinking about the needs of the patient in my work, whether it be fixing an air conditioning unit in a patients room or changing lighting in a back hallway between units. All of the work I do can influence a patient or visitors thoughts on my facility and I always keep this in mind by working efficiently and effectively on a daily basis."

Talk about a time that you had to correct a colleague on a potential mistake that they were making in their work. How did you approach that situation?

"Working in the lab setting, our standard operating procedures have been developed over time o set the precedent for timely and accurate results to patients in our clinic and hospital. A couple of months ago, I noticed an experienced tech was taking some shortcuts in our sample labeling procedures. Knowing that shortcuts could lead to mislabeling and potential wrong results for a patient, I immediately approached the tech by letting him know that he was following our SOP on labeling. My approach was friendly and educational, where I pointed out the negative effects that mislabeling could have. He was actually very appreciative that I pointed this out as he had a large workload at that point and was hesitant to ask for help. I offered help at the time to help him get caught back up."

Excellence in the workplace is often a team effort and Centura Health values excellence in the workplace. For this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you take a collaborative approach with your teammates and that you would never hesitate to correct a mistake of a coworker in a safe and professional manner. for you answer to this question, be sure to reiterate that positive relationship building with your colleagues promotes an atmosphere where feedback can be received well and appreciated. Stress to your interviewer that you wouldn't hesitate to do this in the future because you expect the same out of a colleague should you be making an error in your work.

"Working as a Surgical Technician, I take it upon myself to help build great relationships with my surgeons to get to the point where we can give feedback to each other open and honestly to help each other out. A few months ago, one of my favorite surgeons came into the OR for a simple knee surgery as we were finishing prepping the patient. As the surgeon approached the table after reviewing pre-op notes, he approached the right leg and began positioning the leg. Noticing right away that he was positioning the wrong leg, I stopped him immediately and informed him that we were operating on the left leg. He took a deep breath, laughed and thanked me profusely while walking to the other side of the table. My diligence in reviewing patient notes prior to each surgery, combined with my great relationship with the surgeon, helped prevent a potential patient disaster."

Tell me about yourself.

"A bit about me - I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I am a recent grad from Columbia University and have spent the past 12 months traveling the world. It was the best experience that I could have given myself as I was able to learn so much from seeing how the rest of the world lives. I returned to the US just last month and had been actively looking for work the past couple of weeks. I am looking forward to getting into the routine of a career again."

Take a few minutes to tell the interviewer a few things about yourself. You can begin with your recent education, family life, volunteer work, or talk about your travels. Bring up anything that is interesting and highlights your ability to be a responsible, reliable, and bright individual.

"I am an avid marathon runner and have traveled to 10 countries in the last eight years to compete in a variety of races. I am a competitive individual and enjoy keeping fit. Being newer to my career in healthcare services, my biggest goal as of late has to take as many related courses and workshops as possible. I am eager to get a great start on my career."

"I find that with the right company, it's pretty simple to balance life and work. When I enjoy what I do it doesn't feel like a chore. I am always sure that when at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and ensure that I regenerate before the work week begins."

It is essential to keep a healthy work/life balance to prevent burnout. Talk to the interviewer about how you can maintain that appropriate balance for yourself.

"I make a strong effort to keep a healthy balance by spending my free time away from my cell phone and having more face-to-face time with my friends and family. I indulge in the things that make me happy, on my time off. By consistently rejuvenating in this way, I can give even more energy when I am at work."

"Having spent the early part of my career as a travel nurse, I had the awesome opportunity to work all over the country in cities both large and small. Having this experience as a young nurse, twenty-something in age, really opened my eyes to working with individuals from all backgrounds, religions, heritages and socio-economic statuses. What I have learned through my career is that each and every person provides both a learning opportunity for me and a chance for me to provide education to them. I truly value this with both the colleagues I work side by side with and the patients that I treat on a daily basis."

For this question, stress to your interviewer that you value diversity and the fact that uniqueness among individuals makes work fun and educational at the same time. Every person is unique in the fact that they come from different backgrounds and experiences and stress that you value these differences to help you learn and become a better overall person. Make sure that you stress that you value diversity among your patients and your colleagues as well. If you have any personal story or example to share, be sure to do so.

"As a Home Health Aide, I get the opportunity to work with patients in their home and this provides a unique experience compared to the time I worked as a CNA in the hospital setting. I love working with patients in their home as I get to learn a lot about them, their background, their family and their personal lives and this knowledge really helps me put them at ease through conversation. I have a great ability to work with any individual because I value diversity and this makes me a great candidate for your Home Health position."

Here at Centura Health, part of our mission is to care those those that are ill and nurturing the health of the people in our communities. How would you describe your ability to be a nurturer in your job?

"Having dreamed of being a pediatric nurse for a long time, I am able to use great nurturing skills with both the patients that I care for and their families as well. With infants, toddlers and children into young adulthood, I bring a caring and positive attitude with smiles, positive reinforcement and fun games to help children understand what I am doing with them. I find my attitude and caring way with the children is accepted widely by all of the parents I work with."

To nurture is to foster, support and encourage another during a time of development or training and how you answer this question may vary depending on your job. What you interviewer will be looking to hear is that you are the type of person that is willing to be an advocate for helping your patients learn about their treatment and care. Talk about the things that you do to support and encourage your patients and explain methods that are effective for you to get through to your patients.

"Working as a CT Tech for a few years, I unfortunately don't get to build long lasting relationships with patients but that doesn't hinder me from taking a nurturing approach to their care. More often than not, the patient that I work with are in a fearful mindset because of the unknown so the nurturing approach that I take with my patients is to be friendly and educational with my patients. I readily explain the CT machine, what all the moving parts are the end goal of the images that I'm taking. I find that this approach helps put them at ease while preparing them for the next steps after images are read by the radiologists."

"To be a nurturer in a nurse job is very important. Patients in hospitals have a very challenging time and as a nurse, I am supposed to be a helper and psychologist, and educator. I am really high experienced as Nurturer thankfully to my patients in my previous job, where I supported and encouraged them during their treatment. For example, I remember my patient that underwent through tubectomy and she was demolished of this issue so I shared with her my experience with IVF and my motherhood experience and she was inspired by my story and she felt much better."

How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity. Your example could include buzzwords such as introverted, energetic, and confident.

"I'm genuinely easy-going, probably from all the international travel I experienced in my 20's. I like to do the right thing, and sometimes I get stressed trying to reach that goal, but I think it's a worthwhile endeavor. I can be funny, but my sense of humor is pretty dry, so people don't always know that about me when they first meet me."

Talk about a time you witnessed imagination and innovation in the healthcare field. Why was this important to the care you provide or were a part of?

"When my current employer implemented a telemedicine program, many individuals were against the model thinking that proper care could not be had in this environment. But having grown up in this area and lived here my whole life, I have witnessed the fact that many patients don't seek care due to transportation and other convenience issues and health can fail for those individuals. Being a believer in the program, I applied for a nurse position in the new department and I really feel I thrived there. This imaginative model really helped positively influence the health and well-being of many people that otherwise would have not sought care."

In the arena of healthcare, new and imaginative thinking has helped create many breakthrough in patient care over the years and Centura values imagination as part of its processes. For this question, talk about an imaginative thought process or innovation you have witnesses and explained why this was important. If it was something you personally thought of, talk about how your thought process behind it and how it impacted. If it is an imaginative design or process you have been a part of, explain to your interviewer why it was important and that you have an open mind to new and creative way of doing things in the industry.

"A few years ago, my current organization revamped their website and a fully functional self help section of the site was going to be implemented. Having worked in Family Medicine for my entire career, I volunteered to represent our department on the committee that was overseeing that section of the website. Looking back now, I have personally witnessed and gotten feedback from many patients that have utilized our online tools and tips to track weight loss, diets, exercise routines and many other things that have a great impact on their overall health. In today's age, the convenience and quick availability of information on the web is huge for patients and I'm a firm believer that healthcare organizations need to be on the forefront of this movement."

Centura Health seeks to hire those with strong problem solving skills. When were you able to successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?

"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was a success, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to be working very well."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are critical skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace. Talk about a time when you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

"I was working in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

At Centura Health we seek to hire individuals who have ambitions of growing their career. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?

"In 3-5 years I would like to see my career with Centura Health include a path towards a leadership role. I am very keen on paving a long-term career in the healthcare services realm and would love the opportunity to do that here."

Every hiring manager would like to know that their investment of time and training will pay off. Assure the interviewer that you see this position as a long-term fit. How does this role with Centura Health fit into your longer-term plans?

"One of the attractive points of working for Centura Health, Inc. is that you care about the growth of your employees. I'm motivated to learn and am looking for a long-term fit. In 3-5 years I'd like to be grounded in the clinic, learn about this site, your patient base and earn certifications that would help the unit advance. Personally, I'd like to get involved in some of the local volunteer organizations. I speak Spanish, and I have an interest in urban outreach so it would be nice to do something formal in that context...health-education or fundraising."

Centura Health holds stewardship as one if its main organizational values. What are ways that you can and have shown this value in your work in the past?

"As a Physical Therapist, I show stewardship to my patients and my organization by being approachable to people, by being competent in my work and by being thorough in all follow through with my patients. These traits all come very naturally to me in my work and reflect very positively on the therapy that I provide for my patients. If hired, you'll quickly find that my approach with patients is very effective to them both personally and to as effective oaf recovery as possible."

For this question, it is important to understand the concept of stewardship as acting as a surrogate for others and overseeing and protecting others. Now, think about how you do this in your job with patients, visitors and colleagues in your job and talk about the ways you demonstrate stewardship in your work. In the end, stewardship comes down to having compassion and showing that you truly care for others by your words and actions in the workplace and your interviewer will be looking for you to demonstrate these traits.

"I have found a true passion in my career as an Addiction Counselor because of my natural ability to nurture and be a positive steward for my clients that I work with. My personalized approach to each individual helps build a trusting relationship with them and allows me to be that protector of their health and well-being when it comes to walking them through their recovery process. My approach has helped many people struggling with drugs and alcohol find a unique and effective path to recovery and I look forward to doing the same here at Centura Health."

Have you ever encountered a time where you had to go beyond the scope of your duties or policies/procedures to help provide care for a patient? Why was doing so important and what was the outcome?

"Having worked in the Emergency Department setting for many years, I have encountered many times where I had to think on my feet and act quickly to do what was right for a patient. A few months ago, our department was faced with a mass trauma when a bus accident occurred on the interstate bypassing our city. Around 25 total patients came in over the course of a few hours and our first job was triaging the individuals as best we could based on severity of injuries. While most injuries were simple fractured limbs and sprains, several critical trauma patients were involved in the accident. Knowing that nurses and staff from other units would be coming to help shortly, I took it upon myself to transport non-critical patients to open rooms on our Med/Surg unit to make room for more coming with us only having 16 rooms in our ED. While this was not our normal practice, my director commended me for taking the bull by the horns that day."

Centura Health holds integrity in the workplace as one of its organizational values and for this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you value doing what is right for your patients no matter what to help them with a great outcome. For your example, make sure to walk that fine line of doing what is right for the patient while still maintaining a safe workplace for all of your colleagues and other patients. Try to think of a time that your actions don't project that you are a rule breaker, but rather make you a quick thinker and innovator.

"During my time working as both a nurse and an NP in the Intensive Care setting, I have put a priority on ensuring that family members and loved ones of patients have the best access possible to patients. A couple of years ago, an older gentleman was in our care that had suffered a severe heart attack and had undergone surgery following. His wife was by his side the entire time the first day on our unit. When evening visiting hours were coming to a close and seeing how important it was for her to be there, I approached our unit nursing supervisor that was there at the time asking if the spouse could spend the first night with the patient in the room, which was against visitation policy. I plead the case that the wife hadn't spent a night away from her husband in over 20 years and I really feared that his condition may falter without her by his side. The supervisor approved of the one night stay and I explained to the spouse that we could allow her to stay the first night with her husband. She was extremely appreciate and me and a fellow nurse found a cot with fresh bedding to place next to her husbands bed."

If you could expand your knowledge and expertise in any area of healthcare services, which would you choose?

"If I could expand my expertise in any healthcare service area I would choose anything within primary care. This is one of the reasons I have applied with your company. I feel that your focus will be a great fit with my long-term career goals."

The interviewer would like to dig deeper into your true areas of interest when it comes to healthcare services. They want to know that your passions align well with what Centura Health is offering. Talk to the interviewer about the areas of healthcare you would like to focus on most, and then tie that information in with what the position at Centura Health would be offering you.

"Working in an Urgent Care - Same Day Clinic setting, there are times that we can get flooded with patients and wait times can often extend past 30 to 45 minutes for patients. While we generally have to put some urgency in our work during these times, I remain focused on each patient individually and use the same approach I would during slower times. I come from the mindset that each individual patient deserves my focused attention when I am with them and I don't let the distraction of a busy clinic get in the way of that."

"During my time as a psychiatric nurse on a substance abuse unit, it was very important for us to work with primary and specialty care providers and staff to help treat individuals as a whole. I think back to a particular patient that came to our detox unit with sever alcoholism. After detox and initial assessments were conducted, the patient was experiencing heart and respiratory issues as part of his abuse over many years. He hadn't had a basic physical in many years, so our team worked closely with his insurer to figure out his network of providers. From there, we brought in an Internist and a Cardiologist to help provide care from within our system. The initial communication and documentation on this patient was so important to ensure the start of his care was handled with ease."

As I was reading her vitals and checking out her breathing, I noticed that her blood pressure was very high and her breathing seemed very labored. While I did diagnose her with strep throat during the visit, I also spoke with her about the potential risks of hypertension that I suspected and I recommended further testing. I made a referral over to one of our Cardiologists the next week. In following up with the physician, she was diagnosed with hypertension and I worked with the patient moving forward on exercise and diet changes that would positively influence the disease."

"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree, and I would consider myself kind-hearted and open. A career in healthcare can be emotional at times; however, I choose to focus on the positives. For instance - if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way. "
