1. Tell me about a time you made a suggestion requesting change in an organization.
How to Answer
Burlington Coat Factory cares about what their customers and their employees think of their business. They even go so far as to take an annual "Your Voice" survey, which invites associates to evaluate their performance, identify their strengths, and pinpoint areas of opportunity for improvement.
Burlington Coat Factory values their employees' input, so they need to know that you are willing to give feedback and suggest changes if you see something that should be changed. Talk to the interviewer about a time you suggested a change in the workplace. Your example should demonstrate your ability to identify an opportunity for improvement and your willingness to speak up.

1st Answer Example
"Last year, I noticed our closing staff struggled to get everything done before the end of the shift. We often had to stay late, resulting in overtime hours. One of the duties that took up our time was fitting room returns. Our store didn't have a fitting room attendant. Instead, we were supposed to do returns periodically during our shifts. However, we didn't have time most days, so the fitting rooms didn't get done. I suggested that we hire an extra person during hour busiest time to be a fitting room attendant. It would only be a part-time position, but they would be entirely focused on doing fitting room returns. The store took my suggestion and hired someone within a week. It worked out well. Our part-time fitting room attendant got to most of the fitting room returns during the day, leaving far fewer returns for the closing staff to take care of during the evening, meaning we nearly always left on time."

2nd Answer Example
"When I began my most recent job at a family-run business, the owners operated based on trust and didn't have a loss prevention plan. We were having some problems with theft because of it. I suggested that we install a couple of cameras inside the store to deter anyone from stealing. So far, we have seen a 56% decline in the overall loss."

2. Tell me about yourself.
How to Answer
This is typically one of the first questions interviewers will ask in a job interview. It gives you the chance to give a brief biography to introduce yourself to the interviewer. Remember, your interviewer has your resume, so they know the basic facts of your educational and professional history. In your answer, you can gloss over this education briefly, but focus more on what brought you to this interview and where you hope to go from here.

1st Answer Example
"I am a recent high school graduate and just started my freshman year in college. I have a year of experience working as a waitress, and I am looking for a part-time job while I work toward my bachelor's degree. After I graduate from college, I hope to pursue a career in business management. I think a job at Burlington Coat Factory would be a great way to start that career."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I started as a cashier at Company ABC and worked my way up to Assistant Manager over the last several years. I enjoy my job and have learned a lot about leadership and retail. I want to find a company where I can continue to grow and advance my career. I'd like to eventually become a district or regional manager. In my free time, I love hiking and cooking with my fiance."

3. What is your greatest weakness?
How to Answer
Your interviewer doesn't expect you to be perfect. However, they do expect you to be aware of your shortcomings and to have a plan to work on those areas. When describing your weakness, be specific about how that weakness affects your work and how you intend to improve.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I sometimes have trouble asking for help, especially when I think I should be able to handle the task. Often, I'll struggle with the task alone rather than asking a coworker, which usually means the task takes longer or doesn't get done right. In a recent performance evaluation, my manager told me he'd rather I ask for help than take the extra time or do a job incorrectly. It's taken some practice, but I've gotten better at asking for help. I've also asked my coworkers to let me know if they see me struggling. That way, I'll learn how to recognize when I need to ask for help."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I think my biggest weakness concerning retail is my lack of experience. I've worked in food service, so there are some overlapping skills, but it will take some time for me to get used to this new environment. That said, I'm excited about the opportunity and plan to listen closely to my trainer and pick up the job as quickly as possible."

4. What do you do if you expect to be late or miss work?
How to Answer
Your interviewer understands that unexpected things like illness and flat tires happen. You may encounter a situation that causes you to be late or miss work. The important thing in these situations is how you handle it. Show that you will be proactive and notify your manager or supervisor as soon as possible if such a situation occurs. Remember, if you are late or unable to come to work, your supervisor will be responsible for finding coverage for your shift.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I hate being late and always do everything I can to avoid it. If I'm not five minutes early, I feel like I'm already late! Winters here can make travel hard, so I always give myself extra time when there's snow or ice. If I get sick or have some unavoidable delay, I call my supervisor immediately. I want to give them as much time as possible to find someone to cover my shift."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"Being a mom has taught me to always have multiple contingency plans in place in case things don't go according to plan. If I get a flat tire or the car won't start, I have a backup plan to get to work. But I know that sometimes even a backup plan falls through. If being late or missing work is unavoidable, I immediately call my employer and let them know my situation. I will still do everything in my power to make it to work, but I also want to give my supervisors a chance to cover my shift."

How to Answer
In the United States, interviewers can't legally ask candidates if they own a vehicle. However, your interviewer will want to know if you can reliably get to work on time. Assure the interviewer that you have a reliable way to get to work. It may not be a bad idea to have a backup mode of transportation in mind to prove your determination to show up for your shift.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I live within walking distance of the store, so it will be very easy to make it to work. I'm a stickler for punctuality, so I'll always arrive for my shifts 10-15 minutes early."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I take public transit and find it to be very reliable. I always plan for unexpected delays and take an earlier bus if I know it's a heavy-traffic day. I always make sure I'm at least 5-10 minutes early for my shift."

How to Answer

How to Answer
Burlington Coat Factory boasts many great benefits for its employees. However, the interviewer is not asking about financial motivators. They want to know what motivates you outside of salary and benefits.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I am wired for healthy competition, so I'm motivated by any chance to outperform others. Even when I don't win, the competition pushes me to do more and work harder, and when I lose, that just means I have room to improve so that I can do better the next time. I understand you offer several rewards for performance, attendance, sales, and customer service. I look forward to competing for those rewards!"
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I am most motivated by a show of appreciation for my effort. I don't particularly enjoy public recognition, but I still like to be thanked for my work. At my last job, my manager would leave notes of appreciation taped to my locker with a piece of candy or some other treat. It felt good to be recognized for my work, but I also appreciated that my manager made an effort to reward me in a way that fit me."

9. How many days were you absent from work last year?
How to Answer
Burlington Coat Factory is looking for reliable, consistent employees. Your interviewer understands that illness and other unexpected circumstances happen. If you had a few absences for good reason, they will be understanding. However, if you exceeded your allotted sick and personal days and don't have a reasonable excuse, the interviewer will question your reliability.
Be honest. Remember, the company may contact your current or previous employer, ask this question, and discover if you've been dishonest. Even if you have significant absences, you are more likely to be hired if you are honest than if you are dishonest.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I've never had an unexcused absence from work. Last year, I had to miss work for an unexpected family emergency. I of course called work as soon as I found out and let them know I would be unable to come in for my next two shifts. Otherwise, I was there on time for every scheduled shift."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"My coworkers and managers rely on every team member to show up for their shifts on time and prepared to work. If one person doesn't show up, the rest of us have to work harder. Because of that, I only missed one shift last year when I had a stomach bug. I called my manager as soon as I realized I couldn't make it in, giving them plenty of time to find coverage. I've never missed work without a good reason, and I always call in so my managers are prepared to cover the shift."

10. What type of work environment do you dislike working in?
How to Answer
Your work style won't be compatible with every environment, and the environment you dislike says a lot about your work style. For example, if you prefer a quiet, isolated environment, you likely need to focus with minimal distractions to work efficiently. If you want to be a part of a team that provides a strong support system, you likely need encouragement and advice from your colleagues. There is nothing wrong with preferring one type of environment over another; in fact, the interviewer wants to see that you are self-aware and recognize the kind of environment where you do your best work. Be flexible in your response, but be honest. This is as much for your benefit as it is for them. If you will not fit into Burlington Coat Factory's environment.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I can be productive in a wide range of environments. I'm very self-motivated and don't become flustered easily. The only environment I've ever found difficult was at a retailer where the managers and many of the sales associates were unhappy; their toxic complaining about the company and each other was too much for me. It was very distracting. I learned how to compartmentalize internal drama from my daily tasks and customer interactions, so now I feel that I would be more capable of handling a similar environment without any trouble; it just wouldn't be my first choice to work in an environment like that again."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I have trouble working in an environment where everyone is expected to do their own tasks with little to no interaction with others. I do best in a supportive environment with room to grow, the ability to ask questions, and healthy co-worker relationships."

11. How would you describe your personality?
How to Answer
The staff at Burlington Coat Factory work together as a team. Their team is comprised of multiple personalities, but they rely on strong compatibility between team members to work efficiently. When considering which personality traits to share, identify the traits that make you a good teammate. Talk to the interviewer about your personality traits, such as introverted, energetic, or confident, as opposed to your character traits, such as honest, hard-working, or reliable.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I'm a very confident person. I know my strengths and feel empowered to use them to do my best work. I'm extremely friendly and have a knack for engaging even the most disinterested customers in conversation. My boss always described me as a go-getter; I enjoy being challenged and pushing myself to achieve new goals."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 3rd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"Even though I'm an introvert, I enjoy meeting new people and feel comfortable getting to know strangers. I love to organize things - information, products, people, you name it! I'm also really loyal. When I care about a person or an organization, I become an advocate for them, which I think would make me a great addition to the team here."

12. What would you do if your supervisor did not give you all the information you needed to complete a task?
How to Answer
Each day at Burlington Coat Factory brings new tasks and different employees. It's a fast-paced environment, and there is always a lot happening. It is not unusual for information to be forgotten or miscommunicated. When that happens, it will be your responsibility to find the missing information and determine what is required of you. Tell the interviewer how you would handle this situation. If you have experience dealing with similar situations, draw on that experience.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"When I started in the retail industry, I had a communication problem with one supervisor. We both thought the issues were the other person's fault. I scheduled a time to meet with my supervisor outside of work to find a way to improve communication between us. The conversation was incredibly fruitful, and our communication started to steadily improve. I wish I had acted sooner. If I encountered a situation like this again, I would handle it directly immediately to cut down on any issues the communication problem might cause."

13. What type of manager brings out the best in you?
How to Answer
Burlington Coat Factory works hard to bring out the best in its employees. The interviewer might ask this question if they are considering offering you the job. They will want to pair you up with a manager who will inspire you to work hard and give your all. The interviewer will also be trying to determine if you will be a good fit for the company's environment.
Answer honestly. Some employees prefer a supportive, encouraging manager, others work best with a hands-off manager who steps back and lets them work mostly unsupervised, and still others like a manager who works alongside the rest of the staff. Show the interviewer that you are self-aware and understand the type of manager who brings out the best in you, but be as flexible as possible.

1st Answer Example
"I prefer to work with a mentor who is committed to mentorship. While I can work independently, I want to work my way into a leadership position and hopefully find a place at the corporate offices. I need a mentor-like relationship to be most successful. What is the management style here?"
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I prefer to work with a hands-off manager who lets me carry out my tasks as I see fit. I understand that I will need some training at the beginning, and I'm okay with that. But I find it easier to do my job when my supervisor trusts me to do it on my own. That said, it is also important for the manager to be available in case there are any problems."

How to Answer
Burlington Coat Factory expects excellence from its employees. Show the interviewer that you regularly go above and beyond what is expected of you.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"Last week, a customer came in asking for a return on a purchase that is typically nonrefundable. However, it was expensive, and the customer explained that, due to an unexpected medical expense, they were no longer able to afford the item. I sympathized with the customer and asked them to wait while I explained the situation to my manager. Ordinarily, I am a stickler for company policy, but this situation called for bending the rules a little. My manager agreed, and together, we figured out a workaround that would give the customer a full refund. The customer was extremely grateful and thanked me for caring enough to help her."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"Last month, my manager called a meeting with all the store openers, including me. She said the closing staff didn't have enough time to finish the cleaning after their other closing duties. The closing staff was mostly new employees, mixed with a few veterans. The opening staff, however, was mostly veteran employees, and we had more than enough time to complete our opening duties. My manager asked if any of us would be willing to complete whatever cleaning the closing crew didn't get the night before when we came in to open. I quickly volunteered, and I've been doing it every time I open for the past month. I know what it's like to be the new guy, and I couldn't imagine how hard it is to close with a staff of mostly newbies. I knew that doing the extra cleaning for a while wouldn't be hard for me, but it would help the closing staff so much to not have to worry about it. I always try to make life easier for my coworkers when I can."

18. Take me through your retail experience. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?
How to Answer
If Burlington Coat Factory is looking for an associate with retail experience, they will say so in the job description. However, the interviewer may ask this question, or a similar question, even if experience isn't required. If you have retail experience, walk the interviewer through your favorite and most challenging positions. Avoid speaking negatively about past managers or coworkers.
Knowledge of the retail industry is crucial for applicants at Burlington Coat Factory. If you don't have experience in the industry, that's okay. Display your knowledge of the industry by highlighting some of the transferable skills you've gained during your employment history in other industries or your education.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I have held two positions in the retail industry. My most challenging position was with Company ABC as a cashier. I worked there when I was in high school, and it was my first job. I found it challenging because I was new to the workforce and had no idea what I was doing. I felt like I was being thrown into the deep end every day for my first six months, but I worked hard and learned a lot. My favorite position was with XYZ Company, where I worked in college. I was far more confident to dive in, and I was given more responsibility. After I had been there for a year, I started training new employees, which I enjoyed. I also liked the company culture. It was supportive and encouraging and gave us opportunities to advance, which I appreciated."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"While I haven't yet worked in the retail industry, I'm excited to get started! I love learning new things, especially when it comes to working with and serving other people. In college, I worked in a writing lab where I helped younger students correct essays and prepare for English exams. That job was challenging, but it taught me so much about listening, practicing patience, and helping frustrated students feel at ease. I think that experience will set me up for success in the retail industry."

21. What would you do if your coworker did not show up for their shift?
How to Answer
No matter how reliable and dedicated you are, you will always have colleagues who don't put in the same effort. At a big retailer like Burlington Coat Factory, the occasional no-call, no-show can be expected. A coworker's failure to show up for their shift can throw off everyone's day and cause an ordinarily calm shift to become stressful. Interviewers ask this question to see how you react to the unexpected. Do you buckle under the pressure and throw in the towel, or do you hunker down and work twice as hard to get everything done?
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"I'm always happy to pick up extra shifts for any reason, especially if it means helping my managers and coworkers out of a bind when someone doesn't show up for their assigned shift. Being a team player is important to me."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"If a coworker doesn't show up for their shift, the only thing to do is work twice as hard to cover them until management can find someone to cover their shift. There's no point in adding to the negativity by complaining. I've found that if everyone pitches in, we can make do for a day or two. I'm also always willing to take on an extra shift if a manager asks me to cover for someone else."

28. What would you do if a customer argued with you about a return?
How to Answer
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to encounter argumentative or angry customers in the retail world, and Burlington Coat Factory is no exception. However, as an employee, you will be expected to handle such customers respectfully and professionally.
Tell the interviewer how you intend to approach argumentative customers, particularly when they don't want to follow store policy. Remember, you will be expected to do everything in your power to provide a positive customer experience while following the store's policies.
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
1st Answer Example
"It wouldn't be the first time a customer was angry with me about a policy I had no control over. When that happens, I've learned to patiently listen to their frustrations and work with them to find a solution that aligns with company policy. In extreme situations, I would consult with my manager to determine if a one-time special-case return or 'peace offering' could be made; that way, the disgruntled customer leaves satisfied with a story that paints Burlington Coat Factory in a positive light."
Written by Kimberly Hallman on May 2nd, 2023
2nd Answer Example
"I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position. I fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations. If a customer argued with me about a return, I would do everything in my power to allow the return. I know that company policies can be strict, and for good reason, but it might be worth it to bend a policy if it means keeping a loyal customer. That said, I know it's not always my call. If I didn't have the authority to work around the return policy, I would get a manager involved. But at no point during the conversation would I lose my cool or behave disrespectfully."
