How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"I really dislike being the center of attention, so I don't find public recognition to be particularly motivating. My last manager was in the habit of giving employees simple, hand-written notes that expressed appreciation for going the extra mile or accomplishing a larger goal, and sometimes these notes were accompanied with gift cards. They were simple gestures, but it always meant a lot to me to hear from my boss that my work was noticed and appreciated."

"At my most recent retail position, our accomplishments as a team were rewarded together, sometimes with one outstanding worker receiving special acknowledgement. When we achieved something big together, the management team took all of us out for happy hour. I really like this approach because we truly were a team -- we accomplished way more together than we could separately, so it makes sense to be rewarded together as well."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I was a stay-at-home mom for many years, which taught me to always have multiple contingency plans in place in case things didn't go according to plan -- and I had to learn to think on my feet, as well. Once I rejoined the retail workforce, I realized that the adaptability and forethought I had learned as a mom was definitely transferable to the retail world. Since I always have Plans B, C, and D running through my head, I don't become flustered when unexpected situations come up on my way to work -- I just move on to the next plan."

Proper planning will get you far, but it's important to always have a Plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work, and assure your interviewer that you are proactive and can handle the stress of unexpected situations.

"I stay calm and composed when unexpected issues come up. On my way to work two or three years ago, I receive a phone call informing me of a family emergency. While it was extremely stressful and upsetting to receive the news, I knew I had a responsibility to let my managers know that I wouldn't be able to make it into work."

Do you have reliable transportation?

"I take public transit and find it to be very reliable. I always plan for unexpected delays and take an earlier bus if I know it's a heavy-traffic day or there's bad weather."

"Luckily, I've only ever had to call into work twice -- I had a terrible case of the flu last year and couldn't make it into work for two shifts in one week. As soon as I got home from the doctor, I followed store protocol by emailing my coworkers and asking if anyone could cover the shifts I knew I would have to miss. I was able to get one shift covered, but no one was available to cover the other shift. I immediately got in touch with my manager and let her know the situation. I made sure to get a doctor's note that I brought in with me when I was able to return to work."

Being a sales associate at Big W means being diligent and always on time. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance; you can be honest about a time you had to miss work but we sure to mention that you followed company protocol.

"I've found myself to be productive in a wide range of work environments -- I'm very self-motivated and don't become flustered easily. The only environment I've ever found difficult was at a retailer where the managers and many of the sales associates were very unhappy, and their toxic complaining about one another became too much for me to bear -- it ended up being very distracting from the work there was to do. But I did learn how to compartmentalize internal drama from my daily tasks and customer interactions, so now I feel that I would be very capable of handling a similar environment without trouble -- it just wouldn't be my first choice to work in an environment like that again."

"I would describe my personality as approachable, high-energy, and extremely positive. I love learning new things and sharing information with others, so I would be excited to develop a deep knowledge of our products that Big W carries."

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"When I arrived for training for my most recent retail position, there was some miscommunication about the length of the training. I was still working at my former job as well and had planned my schedule around what the training manager had told me originally. When I explained the situation to the trainer, she double-checked her notes and verified that she had originally told me that I would be done earlier in the day, giving me plenty of time to make it to my other job. I felt good about the way that I handled the situation -- even though I felt a little frustrated, I went to my manager respectfully and non-confrontationally, and everything worked out just fine."

At a retail business like Big W, important information may sometimes fall through the cracks. Tell the interviewer how you have handled interactions with supervisors in the past.

"By and large, I haven't experienced many situations where my supervisors forget to relay important information to me, but it has happened from time to time. I know that my supervisors never intentionally withhold information, so there's no reason to be upset or frustrated when honest mistakes are made."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"I've been in the retail industry for nearly six years, so I've worked with a wide range of personalities and management styles. I'm a very independent worker, so different management styles only have slight impacts on me. My preferred management style, once the manager trusts me and my work, is to work independently unless there is a specific group task to accomplish."

"I have been interested in seeking a new position for quite some time but haven't jumped on anything yet because I want to make sure it's the right fit. "My current sales position is highly commission-based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Even though we compete, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

"Last year when I was managing our weekend shift, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity for us to save on overtime hours. I created a presentation and gave it to my manager, who took it to upper management. The changes were implemented, and I was very proud of the suggestion that I made."

In addition to being able to handle change, can you also recognize when change is required and be confident enough to present that to your organization? Talk to the interviewer about a time when you were able to suggest a change in the workplace.

"When I began my most recent job at a small family-run business, the owners didn't have any marketing strategy: they were operating with the same website and Internet and community presence they had had for ten years. Everything was outdated, and business was suffering because of it. Outside of work hours, I did research on marketing plans and successful websites, and then I built a presentation that I delivered to the owners. They implemented my marketing plan with a few minor changes, and since then they have seen an increase in web traffic as well as several new clients who have all raved about the updated website and community marketing plan."

This position requires a flexible schedule as we are open evenings, weekends, and most holidays. Are you able to commit to these hours?

"I am happy to offer a flexible schedule and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days after 5 PM."

"Last week I noticed that my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some of the staff were complaining that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so that she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by way of organization."

"A few months ago, a customer from out of town came into our store because she needed an outfit for a funeral -- she was in town visiting family when unexpected tragedy struck. The customer was obviously distraught and needed special attention. I went to the neighboring coffee shop and bought the customer a tea, took her to a comfortable area of the store, and, with her consent, went through the store and grabbed a few items that I thought would be appropriate for her needs. She was so grateful to not have to shop or try on several items to find the right thing -- I was able to find her a dress that worked well for the ceremony, and she gave me her credit card so I could complete her transaction while she remained in the fitting room area to be alone and gather herself. It was a really hard day, but it was really rewarding."

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

"By far my most challenging retail job was my first, about three years ago. It was really difficult to transition from restaurant service to retail service -- while some of the skills are obviously transferable, it was a totally different experience. But that first difficult job really set me up for success in the retail industry. I learned a lot about myself and about what it means to create great customer experiences that result in repeat and regular customers."

Big W is dedicated to creating great customer interactions, so any experience you have in the retail industry is a plus. "While I haven't yet worked in the retail industry, I'm really excited to get started! In my most recent position at an IT call center, I found that my favorite part of the job was the connections I built with my repeat clients. I loved getting to know them, learn how best to communicate with them, and build honest, respectful relationships. It's been a challenging job because IT trouble tends to bring out the worst in people (everyone hates it when technology doesn't work the way it should). It's taught me to stay calm, focused, and positive when things don't go the way I expect, which I think would be valuable skills in the retail industry as well."

It's clear that the company values our planet and our communities, so I would be thrilled to work for a company like that."

"I've never had a bad experience at Big W -- I've consistently enjoyed great customer service from knowledgeable and excited salespeople. Now that I've researched your company culture and values, I think a job here is exactly what I'm looking for."

You will be responsible for a large amount of cash and valuable merchandise at Big W. What would your most recent employer say about your character and honesty?

"I have a proven track record for being a person of integrity in the workplace. Last year at my most recent workplace, I caught a coworker -- who was a friend of mine outside of work -- trying to steal something from our store. I was really upset and horrified, and when I confronted him about it, his attitude was really dismissive. I wrestled with it overnight, but then I knew I had to go to my manager the next day and talk it out with her. She told me that she really appreciated that I came to her with the information and said that she would handle it. My coworker ended up getting fired, which was hard -- but I knew that I had done the right thing."

Integrity is one of the most important qualities that a Big W team member can have. Assure the interviewer that you can be trusted by speaking about your character, including what your past employers would say about you.

"During my exit interview from my last job, my boss told me how much she appreciated my diligence and honesty. I have a reputation for doing the right thing, even when it's really hard or uncomfortable."

"I'm always happy to pick up extra shifts for any reason, especially if it means helping my managers and coworkers out of a bind. Being a team player is really important to me, especially when I care about the other members of the team."

"I have a very flexible schedule at the moment, so I'm almost always available to pick up extra shifts if I'm needed. "People can be unpredictable, so it's always important to treat customers with respect and discernment -- if someone is having a hard day, sometimes all it takes is one interaction to tip the scales in one direction or another. I'm very sensitive to emotional energy, so I have a bit of a radar for customers who enter the store in a frustrated or aggressive mood, and I make sure to let my other team-members and managers know that the customer may benefit from some extra attention or elevated service."

Retail and customer service based roles like sales positions at Big W will often require a diplomatic and calm attitude when faced with upset customers. Tell the interviewer how you would de-escalate a conflict with an upset customer.

"In the past, I've had success with changing the trajectory of an interaction with an aggressive customer just by patiently listening to their problems and maintaining my own inner calm. I know that escalation usually happens when both parties become more agitated, so it's important that I stay calm when a customer is becoming agitated. In extreme situations, if I'm unable to de-escalate the situation alone, I loop in one of my managers so we can resolve the situation together."

I'm also a very independent worker, but I value feedback; if you're not satisfied with my work or if you see room for improvement, I'm excited to meet that challenge and push myself to do more."

I'm an engineer at heart, and I spent my childhood taking computers apart and putting them back together. After I finish school, I would definitely be interested in exploring any opportunity to move into an IT position with Big W."

In our retail stores we take pride in keeping the store clean and the merchandise organized. Do you feel capable of keeping the store up to our standards of cleanliness and organization?

"Before I worked in retail, I made extra cash during college cleaning houses. I really enjoy cleaning and organizing, actually -- I find it very meditative. Whenever there's downtime at the store where I currently work, my manager can tell you that I'm the first to grab the broom or duster and get to work on tidying up the store."

At Big W, it's important that everything is clean and tidy so that customers can easily find what they're looking for. No one wants to shop in a dirty or disorganized store. Assure the interviewer that you feel that you can confidently contribute to creating a clean and orderly work environment.

"My biggest pet peeve as a shopper is when merchandise isn't where it's supposed to be or looks disorganized and sloppy. I have a bit of a habit of straightening up merchandise while I'm grocery shopping or running errands. Needless to say, you can count on me to be on top of keeping the merchandise at the store very organized and displayed in a way that customers can easily locate what they're looking for."

This position requires you to wear a uniform to work. Have you worn a uniform in the workplace before? How do you feel about this?

"I personally love the practice of wearing a uniform. It helps me get into the right frame of mind on my way to a shift, and it makes getting ready for work that much easier! After all, they say that the most successful people wear the same thing every day."

At Big W, it's important for customers to know who they can turn to if they have a question about a product or need help finding an item, and uniforms help accomplish that goal. What are your thoughts on the practice of wearing uniforms?

"In my experience, uniforms help create an atmosphere of professionalism and cut down on unnecessary distractions. May I see what the uniforms at Big W look like?"

In this role you will be required to handle customer transactions. How strong are your mathematical skills?

"I did very well in math during high school and am comfortable with the math required to accept cash, balance a cash float, and perform inventory-related tasks."

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

"I once had a coworker who asked me to help him steal, and it was so uncomfortable! I would never steal something for any reason, so it was easy to say no to him. Even though it was hard to go to my manager and know that my coworker would probably be fire, I knew I had to do the right thing. What is the process for situations like that at Big W?"

At Big W we have a very clear return policy. How would you handle a customer who was arguing with you about a potential return?

"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

As a Big W employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle situations like this with poise while making the customer happy and keeping the needs of the company in mind as well.

"I've been in situations in the past where a customer was angry with me about a policy I had no control over. When that happens, I just have to listen patiently to their frustrations and work with them to find a solution to their problem that aligns with company policy. In extreme situations, I would consult with my manager to determine if a one-time special-case return or 'peace offering' could be made -- that way, the disgruntled customer who came into the store leaves satisfied with a story that paints Big W in a positive light."

"My customer service approach changes based on the attitude and nonverbal cues of the customer. If I can tell that the customer wants space, I give them time but let them know that I'm available if they have any questions or requests. I always stay close at hand if I know a certain customer always has lots of questions. I think it's important to treat every customer as an individual with different kinds of sales needs."

"I ensure that my customers' needs are met by actively listening to them and also asking the right questions. If I'm working on a task and a customer interrupts me with a question or request, I always stop what I'm doing and help them before returning to my task."

"I always smile, greet, and acknowledge a customer, unless they clearly wish to be left alone, ensuring they feel welcome and respected in the shop. I gauge a customer's non-verbal cues to see when they need help. If they approach me for help while doing some work, I always put down what I am doing to assist them.
