1.   What would you do if your supervisor did not properly communicate information to you?

How to Answer

Managers oversee multiple employees, sometimes entire shifts, and things can get lost between the cracks. Best Buy wants to hire proactive employees who will take it upon themselves to seek out the information they need to do their jobs.

Tell the interviewer what you would do if your manager neglected to give you the necessary information to complete a task. This might involve approaching your manager to ask for the missing information, asking more experienced coworkers, or doing some research. Whatever your approach, the interviewer will be most impressed with an active response rather than a passive one.

1st Answer Example

"When I start a new job, I learn my supervisor's communication style and do my best to copy it. That way, we have a better chance of understanding each other. If I was still missing information that I needed, I would approach my supervisor directly and ask about it. I've found that a direct approach is the best way to avoid miscommunication."

2nd Answer Example

"If faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

2.   Tell me about your greatest work-related accomplishment.

How to Answer

Your resume will tell your interviewer a lot about your professional experience, but it does not tell them what you value. The accomplishment that you are most proud of says a lot about what you value and how hard-working you are. Choose an accomplishment that positively impacted you, your team, or your employer. Describe the actions you took to achieve success. It is okay to brag a bit. Remember, your interviewer wants to know what kind of work they can expect from you if Best Buy hires you.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"My greatest achievement was being promoted to sales manager at Company ABC after only 18 months. I was very new to the field, but I worked hard and learned everything I could from my colleagues and supervisors. I showed extreme dedication to my job and my company, and my hard work paid off."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"My greatest accomplishment was being named Employee of the Year last year. My store names an Employee of the Month each month, and the person who wins the most monthly contests is named Employee of the Year. To achieve this, I worked hard to reach and exceed every sales quota. I made sure every customer had a wonderful experience in our store, and I went out of my way to help my coworkers and managers whenever I could. I won Employee of the Month eight times, and my coworkers and managers all agreed that I deserved the Employee of the Year award."

3.   What role do you usually take in team projects?

How to Answer

Best Buy's store employees work together as a team to get everything done. Best Buy's website describes the workplace culture as supportive and encouraging. The interviewer wants to know if you will fit in with their company culture.

There are many roles you can take on in a team project - leader, administrator, builder, planner. Talk to the interviewer about what role you are most comfortable in. Answer honestly, but keep in mind that the more flexible you are, the more appealing you will be to the interviewer.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"When I work with a team, I tend to take on a leadership position. I'm a go-getter, and when there's a project in front of me, I step up to get things done. I'm usually pretty good at determining others' skills and talents, which makes me a good delegator, and I know how to look at the big picture and figure out how all the pieces fit together."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"When I work with a team, I tend to be the organizer. I'm a very organized person, and I find that I work best when I have my tasks categorized and prioritized. When multiple people are working on a project, someone needs to keep track of who's doing what and when each piece needs to be finished, and I'm usually that person. I set up a schedule and make sure everyone knows what they are responsible for, when we need to meet, and when every part of the project is due."

4.   Tell me about yourself.

How to Answer

This is usually the first question asked in an interview. The interviewer is hoping for a brief introduction to who you are. They've had a chance to read your resume, but they want to know what you think is important to know about you.

A great way to answer this question is to walk the interviewer through your professional history. Tell the interviewer where you have been - your educational and professional background. Then, tell the interviewer where you are now. Explain what you are looking for at this point in your career. Finally, tell the interviewer where you would like to go. Tell them about your career goals and how this job will help you reach them.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I graduated high school last year and am now a freshman in college studying IT. I'm looking for a job that could serve as an introduction to the field, and I think Best Buy fits that role perfectly. I'd like to stay with Best Buy throughout my college years before moving on to a job in IT. I'm a straight-A student and have been interested in computers my whole life. I've built two of my own. In my spare time, I love playing video games, and I just recently joined my college's intermural volleyball team."

2nd Answer Example

"I started working for Company ABC as a sales associate five years ago and was promoted to assistant manager last year. I'm looking for a job that offers more chances to explore different departments and other areas of the business, which is one of the reasons I applied to Best Buy. My goal is to eventually move into an executive role. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family."

5.   What is your greatest weakness?

How to Answer

While Best Buy is looking for skilled, confident employees, your interviewer realizes that no candidate will be perfect. It is more important to them that they find an employee who recognizes their shortcomings and is willing to work on them.

Identify a weakness related to the job and explain how you plan to work on it. You can mention a specific hard skill that you can improve by taking a course or seeking training, or you can discuss a soft skill that can be improved with practice and determination.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I have a lot to offer Best Buy's customers regarding computers, tablets, phones, and other smart devices and appliances. I have a lot of experience working on those devices and am very comfortable answering questions about them and providing tech support. However, my video game knowledge is lacking. I didn't grow up playing video games, so I don't have experience with different consoles and games. That said, I know Best Buy sells consoles and games, and, if hired, I will likely work in that department at some point. I've already started exploring different video game consoles and becoming familiar with how they work. Several of my friends play video games regularly, and I've asked them to teach me how to play their games on their consoles. It's been a lot of fun, and I plan to continue learning more from them so I can be just as knowledgeable in this area as I am in others."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"I would say I struggle with being concise, especially when giving instructions or teaching. I really enjoy teaching others about my area of expertise, and sometimes I get carried away talking about things that aren't relevant. In some situations, that's okay, but if I'm working with a customer, my rambling can annoy them. To work on this, I've started limiting myself to one-sentence answers when a customer asks me a question. Then, I ask the customer if they need more information. This has taught me how to give the needed information in a shorter answer, but it also allows me to elaborate if the customer asks me to."

6.   What recent or upcoming technology are you excited about?

How to Answer

Best Buy encourages their employees to have fun at work. This means that they are interested in hiring employees who enjoy working with technology. As an employee, you will be expected to know enough to be able to answer customers' questions, so you should at least have an interest in the types of technology that Best Buy sells.

Let your enthusiasm shine through your answer. Don't just give a one-word answer; show off your expertise and explain the reason behind your answer.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I have been reading a lot recently about AI-generated content. There have been amazing leaps in that area, so much so that many industries are struggling to keep up with it. I'm excited about the advances, and I look forward to seeing how AI can be used productively."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 28th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"Video game consoles have advanced by leaps and bounds in the past few years. I recently bought a PlayStation 5, and I love it. The loading speed is unrivaled by any other console, and I love playing with the new controller. The lack of storage space is frustrating, but the great games that have been released for the PlayStation 5 definitely make up for it!"

7.   What would you do if you were going to be late or miss work?

How to Answer

Best Buy is looking for reliable employees, but even the most reliable people get sick and run into traffic. A truly reliable employee will have a plan to enact when an unavoidable situation occurs. Tell the interviewer what you would do if you had to miss work or knew you would not make it to your shift in time.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I'm a mom, so I constantly have strategies running through my head to respond to the unexpected. I believe you should always be prepared for something to go wrong. Since I'm constantly strategizing how I'll react to a problem, I usually have a good plan in place when the unexpected does happen."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"I'm a very cool-headed, even-tempered person, so I don't panic when unexpected things happen on my way to work. I recently had a flat tire on my way into the store where I currently work, but I always leave for work earlier than necessary. I called my manager as soon as I could and let her know what was going on, and then I changed my tire. I only ended up being about fifteen minutes late for my shift, and it was no big deal because I had let my manager know what was going on."

9.   How do you feel about performance incentives?

How to Answer

If you're asked this question, chances are Best Buy offers performance incentives or the job they have in mind for you comes with performance incentives. Best Buy also offers an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, which allows their employees to buy Best Buy stock at a fifteen percent discount. Answer honestly, but keep in mind that this will likely be a part of your compensation package, so speaking negatively about it isn't wise.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep an employee motivated to do a great job and ensure that they are on top of their KPIs. The majority of people are very enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"I do not require performance incentives to do a great job; however, small perks are always nice to have!"

10.   What are your salary expectations?

How to Answer

If you aren't sure what to expect from Best Buy in terms of financial compensation, explore their website. When discussing salary, it is best to give a range instead of a specific number to avoid undervaluing or overvaluing your work.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

Answer Example

"I currently make minimum wage, so anything higher than that would be a huge improvement! I would like to get to a place where I can quit my second job and focus my attention and energy on doing my best work at Best Buy."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

11.   How can Best Buy motivate you on the job?

How to Answer

While Best Buy offers competitive pay and good benefits, now is not the time to discuss financial compensation. Your interviewer understands that money is a factor in your decision, and if you are among the top candidates, they will bring up the topic of salary. However, Best Buy wants to hire employees who are interested in more than money. This company prides itself in supporting its employees and inspiring their best work, so they will want to know how best to do that for you. This might include opportunities to advance within the company, public recognition, or sales competitions.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"If I feel valued, I'll stay motivated. I want to know that my managers see me and my unique contributions to the team. It can be anything from a simple word of appreciation to an award or public recognition. The type of recognition itself doesn't matter as long as I'm treated with respect and appreciated for my hard work."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"I am very much self-driven and self-motivated. As long as I am being treated with respect and feel appreciated, you will get the best work from me."

Written by Jordan Henry

12.   Describe your ideal employer.

How to Answer

Best Buy is not perfect, and your interviewer knows that. However, if you are truly interested in working for Best Buy, your ideal employer should at least be similar. Be honest, but try to incorporate information that you've learned about Best Buy in your answer. By describing a work environment that is similar to Best Buy, you indicate that you would be a good fit for Best Buy and would likely stay long-term.

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I need to know that I'm a part of something bigger than myself, that my work is contributing to an important goal. My ideal employer has a strong vision that they communicate to all of their employees. As long as I feel like I'm a part of a team that is working toward a common goal, I'll be happy."

Written by Kimberly Hallman on April 27th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"Environmentally-ethical actions are extremely important to me. I just can't work for a company that isn't doing its part to decrease its carbon footprint and make the world a better place. I'm excited about Best Buy's dedication to renewable energy and helping its customers live sustainably; they're making a huge impact on the world both inside and outside their organization. That's the kind of company I'm excited to work for."
