  • 2. How did you bring value to your last position?

      How to Answer

Think about the strengths and skills that made you an asset in your most recent position. Maybe you influenced changes that saved the company money. Perhaps you were the top-grossing salesperson on the floor. Think of your strengths in action! If you are reliable, talk about how consistent your work has been and how you are in constant support of your coworkers. If you have a strong work ethic, share how you accomplished a project in the midst of harsh obstacles.

"I brought value to my last position through my high level of reliability, my positive attitude, and my above-average organizational skills. Successful project management is a large part of my work history. The company I am currently with was lacking when it came to smooth project execution. I was able to improve their performance in that area greatly."

"I was the go-to person when you needed an intuitive answer to a new and complex problem. People respected that I listened to them and asked questions that enabled us to go back to first principles and think creatively. Best of all, they loved that I shared the success - that they became heroes. For example, when one of my colleagues designed the fairness and bias detection tool, user feedback was that it was too difficult to choose which technical fairness metric to use. He came to me and I designed a 3-step decision tree, with intuitive questions, that recommended a metric."

      Marcie's Feedback

Excellent! You come across as confident in your listening, communication, and problem-solving skills, which is great. Backing up your assertions with an example makes your response even stronger. Did the fairness and bias detection tool end up being easier to use after you helped your colleague devise a new metric for it?
