Amazon Interview Questions & Answers

  1. 1.

We encourage innovation at Amazon. What does innovation mean to you?

      How to Answer

Amazon references innovation thoroughly in workplace culture documents which you can find online. Because innovation is an often misused word, with room for interpretation, it's essential to have a complete understanding of what innovation means to them. Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles include 'Invent and Simplify,' which touches on the fact that true leaders should expect and require innovation and invention from their teams. Amazon believes that being innovative includes an awareness of new ideas and never being limited by the 'we don't do that here' mentality.

Talk to the interviewer about how you have embodied this way of thinking in the past.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my previous role, I was fortunate enough to introduce my company to the idea of a gold level service where, in addition to our general customer service, we added on service options. Our customer base responded very positively, and we kept the program running for a few years. To me, innovation is creating new products and services that are useful to customers and also help my company stand out further in their space."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I fully agree with Amazon that innovation means being someone who thrives on change and remains nimble in their work. Innovation can mean creating a new and powerful idea, and it can also mean simplifying an existing one."

"Innovation means to invent new ideas or new products. Innovation makes either our work or daily routine easier."

      Rachelle's Answer

Could you expand on these thoughts a bit further? Amazon places a lot of importance on 'invent and simplify,' so I suggest using more of their language when delivering your interview answers. For instance, you could incorporate thoughts from this clip taken from the Amazon careers site: "Invent and Simplify Leaders expect and require innovation and invention from their teams and always find ways to simplify. They are externally aware, look for new ideas from everywhere, and are not limited by “not invented here.” As we do new things, we accept that we may be misunderstood for long periods of time."
