8 Interview Questions With Sample Answers

1.   Would you say you are a sociable person?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Since Aldi is a customer-based organization, a great deal of social interaction is required for most positions. Discuss your ability to work with others, engage customers, and build relationships with people. If you've previously worked in retail or customer service, talk about what you like and what excites you to come to work every day. Be sure to describe qualities you possess that would help you succeed in this role (IE, energetic, engaging, friendly, personable, outgoing, upbeat, etc.).

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"Absolutely! I recharge by spending time with others. In my group of friends, I am the one to organize get-togethers and plan outings. At my school, I often come up with fun team-building events and fundraisers. I can make conversation with nearly every stranger I meet."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"I have a passion for working with others and get along well with older adults and children alike. I am an extrovert and am extremely outgoing and upbeat. I love to help others, whether that be locating an item in the store or carrying groceries to their car for them."

2.   We have had concerns with employee theft recently. What would you do if you caught an employee or co-worker stealing?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

This question allows the interviewer to discover more about your character. It's not uncommon for ethical dilemmas in the workplace to come up from time to time, so speak openly about any relevant experiences you've had dealing with this type of situation. Think carefully about your answer, as it will leave a strong impression. Demonstrate your ability to follow a company policy for this type of issue and your commitment to honesty, integrity, and loyalty to Aldi. If you don't have any work-related examples, consider a time in your personal life when you "did the right thing."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"I have never run into this exact issue before, but I had a similar situation in college where a student often cheated on exams. This was unfair to those students studying and working hard to earn good grades, and it was against my school's policy, so I did report it to my professor. If I caught a co-worker stealing, I would follow the same process and report it to my manager immediately. I assume Aldi has an internal policy addressing this matter, so I would be sure to familiarize myself with it so I would know what to do in this circumstance."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"If I caught an employee stealing, I would report the incident immediately. As a previous manager, I understand the value of employee honesty and the damage that this could cause for the company. I know every company is different, so I would familiarize myself with the Aldi disciplinary process to address this issue as well."

3.   What would you do if a coworker asked you to help them steal?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Since Aldi is a retail store, theft by customers and employees is always a concern. The interviewer wants to hear that you are honest and ethical and to discover how you would handle this situation. Assure the interviewer that you would not participate in this type of behavior and illegal activity and would report it immediately. If this situation has happened to you before, use that as an example and explain how you handled the situation.

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"I am sure that you have an internal policy for employee theft so I can assure you that I would follow the required steps to report the theft. I am a trustworthy person with a strong track record of honesty with my previous employers and would never engage in this type of behavior."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"I would never help a coworker steal anything, whether that was food, money, or otherwise. I would tell the employee that it's illegal and would tell them not to steal either. I would report this to my manager or HR immediately."

4.   Do you prefer working in a team environment or alone?

What You Need to Know

Aldi is very much a team environment but may require you to complete some tasks individually. Discuss what you like about working as a team and what you like about working alone. Try to keep your answer positive and avoid speaking negatively about one or the other.

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"Most of my recent work experience has been independently focused so I would welcome the support of working in a team environment. I have a great deal of experience in a team environment from working on group projects in University and enjoy working with diverse groups of people."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"I am an extrovert, so I enjoy working with others to achieve common goals. I find it easy to make small talk with others and work alongside people regularly. I can also thrive working alone, whether that's a project like stocking shelves, or cleaning up the store after hours, I'm happy to work in either setting."

5.   Have you ever called off from work before?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Aldi relies on employees to be at work so that shelves remain stocked and cash registers are occupied to check customers out. The interviewer wants to know that you are a reliable person and they will not have to constantly find coverage for your shifts. Discuss your commitment to the company and speak to times you've had to call out of work in the past. If you don't have work experience, think about times you've missed class, internships, or other volunteer responsibilities. No matter the situation, demonstrate that you handle these types of situations with professionalism.

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"Since this is my first job, I do not have prior work history to share with you. I have held responsibilities in a volunteer capacity in the past and also attended school full-time, and I took those commitments seriously. I rarely missed class, and if I did, it was once or twice a year because I was not feeling well. In my volunteer role, I understood that anytime I would miss an event or project, it created a heavy burden for others, so I did not call out from my responsibilities."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"I have called off from work twice in the last year, but only when I was very ill and with a doctor's note. If I am not feeling well, I notify my manager with as much advanced notice as possible so that my shift can be covered. I like to work, and need to earn a living, so rest assured that I will be at work on time and when expected."

6.   What do you know about ALDI?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Be sure to visit the company's website to learn a few critical things about the company such as its history, mission, vision, and current events. If possible, visit a local store so you can familiarize yourself as well.

Start off by sharing that you know ALDI is all about saving families money. You might share that ALDI uses quarters to keep carts neatly in front of the store saving labor costs. You might share that ALDI does not offer shopping bags for free to save costs. You might share that ALDI is only open during favorite shopping hours to keep labor costs down. You might share that ALDI has terrific quality in-season produce offered at low prices featuring their 'Pick of the Week' options. Be prepared to list a couple of facts that you know about ALDI when the interviewer asks!

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"I grew up shopping with my mother at Aldi, so I'm very familiar with the store size, structure, products, and customer processes. From a higher level, I know Aldi has been awarded the Overall Energy Achievement Award, the top award for recognition of its approach to using sustainable energy, energy reduction, and reducing carbon emissions. I think the Aldi mission is an incredible one."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"I know that Aldi was first started in Germany by two brothers, in the 1940's. It is now one of the largest discount supermarkets, boasting over 10,000 locations across various countries. What I appreciate most about Aldi are the cost-saving efforts your organization takes to pass the savings along to your loyal customers. I look forward to joining such a socially conscious organization."

7.   Why do you want to work for ALDI?

How to Answer

It is important to be forthright and honest with your answers, and everyone may have their own unique reasons for preferring one employer over another. But consider how you might help your interviewer as well when answering this question. Part of the recruiter's job is to determine which of their talent acquisition efforts had the most impact. So examine all the employment offerings they advertise online, and which of those appeal to you most, and list those among your reasons for deciding to pursue this opportunity.

What to Avoid

Avoid offering reasons that have little to do with them, their culture, or the opportunities this presents. Such as wanting to work at a location that is close to home, getting a discount on groceries, or starting off at a more desirable pay rate. This will suggest you are just trying to find any job anywhere, and might up and quit the second a better opportunity comes along.

What You Need to Know

Here are a few of the value propositions ALDI has posted on their careers site, with the aim of recruiting their target talent: "The ALDI story is one that spans over a century. Joining the ALDI team can be your first step toward a successful, long-term career. One that offers best-in-class benefits that focus on your health and wellness, comprehensive training that prioritizes your success, and a team that's all about helping you shine -- how you want. We've been recognized time and again for rewarding careers -- and our high-quality products. With so many locations, you don't have to look far to find a new opportunity to start your next chapter. We pride ourselves on placing a high value on work-life balance! Our core operating hours are 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time Monday through Friday. Employees come to work extremely focused because once their shift is complete, they are able to go home, rest, recharge, and get ready for the following work day."

Written by Kevin Downey on March 21st, 2024

Experienced Example

"I worked for Acme Fresh Market for a few years, but I didn't quite feel like the culture there was in line with my personality. I am very bubbly and happy-go-lucky, and the work culture at my store was more so a keep-your-head-down and get the job done vibe. So, I wanted to work somewhere I could have more fun interacting with the customers, and ALDI stores definitely have that atmosphere. I love the simplicity of how the shelves are stocked, and the simpler model of how these stores operate. In fact, ALDI and Trader Joe's are my two favorite stores to shop at, and they're owned by the same family. So, I figured, why not try to work where I like to shop, where I am a loyal customer who can support a great brand?"

8.   Where do you see yourself one year from now?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

The interviewer wants to understand your ambitions and where you hope to be in a year. They are trying to determine if you will be at Aldi for a short period of time, or if you're committed to something long term. If you are a student, tell the interviewer that you plan to stay at Aldi through graduation, and then share what career or further education you hope to be pursuing after graduation. If Aldi offers jobs in your field, such as management, be sure to mention that you would be open to considering a career in your area at Aldi if one is available upon graduating.

If you are not a student, discuss your desire to maintain stable employment and grow with the company. You may even mention that you hope to have received a promotion by the one-year mark.

Written by Rachelle Enns

Entry Level Example

"I currently have two years left of school, so in one year, I plan to be on the same education track and working full-time. I want to maintain stability in my life, so if offered the job, I would plan to keep my position for as long as possible, hopefully even growing into a supervisor role in the next year or two!"

Written by Rachelle Enns

Experienced Example

"My twelve-month plan is to join your organization and earn my way into a floor manager position. I have a great deal of experience with team management, customer dispute, and inventory. I believe you will see me well-suited for a management role in a short amount of time."
