"I have a strong background in customer service, and with every job I've worked, I've saved up for travel. Travel is my passion, and I love exploring off-trail just as much as visiting a beach resort. So after a good friend, who works for Air New Zealand, told me I should join the Air New Zealand family as well, it made perfect sense to me. So I took their advice seriously."

This is your first and last chance to make an in-person first impression. How you respond to this question may set the tone for the rest of the interview. Would you be able to accommodate working an unpredictable schedule with a wide range of hours, including overtime?

"In my most recent position with Airline XYZ, I had an inconsistent schedule that required me to often be on call. I worked many weekends and holidays. I completely understand that this is part of the lifestyle of a Flight Attendant. I'm happy to work any hours offered to me here at Air New Zealand."

Although there are many appealing aspects of working in the travel industry, the lifestyle has some drawbacks. Therefore, your interviewer is interested in ascertaining whether you've thoroughly considered whether this is the right career path for you. They clearly state on their website that they "operate in a 24/7 industry, so you will need to commit to rostered shifts, weekends, and public holidays." Assure the interviewer that you are aware of the inconsistent schedule associated with being a Flight Attendant. Use examples if you have some experiences to draw on.

"I am available for a wide range of hours and overtime. I prefer to be made aware of my schedule ahead of time so I can make appropriate childcare arrangements."

Would you be comfortable wearing our uniform while representing Air New Zealand?

"I am accustomed to wearing a uniform at work and am happy to abide by any dress code requirements to work with Air New Zealand. I love Air New Zealand's uniform and the new uniforms coming soon. I would wear them with pride, given the chance."

Air New Zealand strives to ensure its uniform accurately reflects its business, employees, and the country of New Zealand. Therefore, they want their employees to accurately represent their brand. Part of doing this is by complying with their Uniform Standards. But, they are also taking measures to ensure their brand accurately represents their employees' diversity. So, they are revising their rules on their grooming standards as part of this update - primarily updating their new iconic uniforms with a focus on sustainability, functionality, safety, and comfort, and relaxing their tattoo policy.

Uniforms can be a controversial discussion in many organizations; however, in the airline industry, uniform use is more common than not. Discuss with the interviewer your experience working in uniform and your willingness to abide by the dress code within Air New Zealand.

"Uniforms are necessary in this industry, so yes, I am comfortable with this policy. I love the new uniforms, by the way. Also, I have tattoos on my forearms. They are tasteful solid bands, and I am grateful for Air New Zealand's relaxing of their exposed tattoo policy."

What unique qualities would you bring to Air New Zealand?

"I have a unique ability to strike up a conversation and build rapport with nearly anyone. This is a great help when it comes to customer service and sales. My up-selling percentages are always very high."

There are some things your resume cannot do. Showing off your fabulous personality is one of them! Therefore, your interviewer is giving you an opportunity to showcase your personality and share what makes you unique. But this question also serves as a personality check to see how well you would fit into their teams and how accurately you would reflect their brand. Can you swim 50 metres in under two minutes?

"I feel like I am close but not quite there yet. To showcase how seriously I am taking this opportunity, once I learned this was a requirement, I started taking swimming lessons. But, if I am lucky enough to get hired, I assure you I would easily accomplish that by the time I take the wet drill while onboarding."

In-flight crew for most airlines are expected to be physically fit and have strong swimming skills. Air New Zealand is no exception. "You will need to be able to swim 50 metres under two minutes and be able to tread water for one minute unaided." Having some in-water training is common as well, often including entering a body of water fully clothed and swimming to a life raft, where you would then assist passengers to safety. If swimming is not your strongest skill, find a local swimming pool and practice, or take lessons. That way, when this question is asked, you can assure your interviewer that you would be up to that task by the time you start onboarding.

"I was a lifeguard every summer in college and am an accomplished swimmer. I could easily do that when put to the test."

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

"As you can see, I had strong progress and career growth in my previous company. I did notice on your website that you have global leadership opportunities. Ideally, five years from now, I would love to see myself growing into a more prominent leadership role within Air New Zealand. If I could work my way into a role like that, I would be thrilled. My career interests align very nicely with your company's goals which helps me to see a great long-term fit here."

Most recruiters are interested in employee recruitment and retention and take measures to find the right fit to avoid attrition and turnover. This question aims to determine how committed you are to this opportunity and whether you want to further your career with Air New Zealand. Research this position and company and identify what options Air New Zealand offers which align with your five-year career goals. On their website, they even advise candidates to "be a self-starter, create an annual development plan, work towards set business goals and projects." Even though it is impossible to know where you will be in five years, assure the interviewer that, given all possible circumstances, you could see yourself as a long-term fit for their position.

"I would love to earn my place as a trusted senior member of the cabin crew. I also have the ambition to earn my pilot's license, and hopefully, in five years, I'll have accomplished that and be on my way to earning a commercial pilot's licence."

If you could start your career over again, what direction would you take?

"I certainly do not regret the direction I have taken my career; however, if I had to start over in a new direction completely, I would likely pursue my Degree in Education and become a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers, and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy coaching and leading others, so any tasks in my current career related to these skills are very welcome."

This question aims to reveal how satisfied you are with your job or career. How you answer this question could indicate whether you left your previous position, hoping your job dissatisfaction won't follow you to your next, while you pine for a career you are more passionate about. A hiring manager will be able to tell a lot about your personality by learning about your other career interests. I'm never bored or dissatisfied with my work, and I love the freedom it provides to explore new places. I'm pretty adventurous, and this feels like the right fit for me."

Tell me about a time you faced a communication issue on your team.

"I worked on a team to solve a problem that could have affected our ability to grow the business and reach our goals. Each person on the team was tasked with a different aspect, such as gathering data and analyzing it. We came together to discuss the results but couldn't seem to agree. We were struggling to listen to each person's opinion. I explained my observation and suggested we give each person a chance to explain their findings and opinions, which helped us take a more collaborative approach."

New Zealand Air has specific requirements that must be met for anyone they'd consider bringing on board, such as a minimum of 18 months of customer service experience in a high-pressure environment. This is designed to ensure that you work well under pressure and are capable of delivering the standard of customer service they pride themselves on and communicating with grace and with a smile. "We are looking for someone with a natural passion for people, the ability to cope under pressure and be resilient in unforeseen circumstances. Each day can bring a different challenge, and the ability to adapt to change will set you up for success."

More often than not, communication issues arise because someone takes it for granted that everyone understands what is being conveyed without verifying. Rushed communication is often the result of not managing one's stress or not effectively multitasking communication, among other priorities. So, anytime you recognize a communication problem on your team, you want to present it situationally to avoid triggering defensive behaviours. Focus on how you identified the issue, the steps you took to adapt to the situation and recalibrate the communication, and how you corrected the communication issue and effectively got everyone on the same page. Be sure to include the outcome of the situation and what you specifically did to repair the problem.

"My current company recently went through a merger. Communication from our executives to our teams was lacking, which resulted in a lack of trust and fears of job insecurity. There was also a great deal of work being assigned with short deadlines, and everyone was feeling the pressure. Recognizing that several teammates weren't coping well with these changes, I shared my observations with my department head and suggested a transparent team-building event. They agreed and gathered everyone to remind them that everyone's jobs were secure, and we relied on the team more than ever."

"I rate my communication skills as a 9/10 as I am not always as clear as I would like. However, I am professional, thorough and clear in all my communications and correspondence. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills."

Air New Zealand needs to ensure you would meet their communication standards and represent their company to their customers in accordance with their code. You are representing New Zealand Air, even when communicating informally with your colleagues or friends when on-premises or in uniform. "Maintain professionalism at all times. You are an ambassador for the airline. Be objective when making written comments about people, as all personal information may be disclosed. Personal information, including your opinions, should be relevant, appropriate, accurate and justifiable. When using electronic communications, take extra care to ensure that any sharing of personal information is done in a secure and protected way."

There is a lot to consider when conveying your strengths and communication skills. When answering this question, you'll need to be as articulate as possible. Some topics to include are your ability to adapt your communication style to others. Your ability to actively listen, validate, empathize, and mirror. Your ability to relay complex subjects into simpler terms. Your ability to communicate nondefensively.

"Communication is essential in the analytic team, mainly operational analytics. I would rate my communication skills as a 7 out of 10 because there is always room for improvement. Since I led a group of analyst, I weighted heavier on communicating with group members and managers in all departments and subsidiaries around the world. Efficient communication will lead to a better analytic outcome. I gathered information from other managers before presenting quarterly reports to the board of CEOs "” also, fixed problems reported by other group members or updated solutions. Every successful day in a core department of two large companies is an opportunity to show that my communication skill is worthy to the minimum rating of 7."

How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me. They'd say I'm confident, friendly, and a go-getter. Are these personality traits that you are looking for in your next hire?"

Any time you are asked this question, you must do some simple research on their website and careers pages, identify what they are looking for in their ideal candidate, and then determine how you meet those requirements. For example, they are looking for someone who shares their values and someone who they would welcome as a friend. They are looking for people with a can-do attitude who feel comfortable being themselves. If you felt there was a safety threat, what steps would you take to ensure the safety of your passengers?

"I am trained on how to react in urgent, distressed, and mayday situations. In an emergency, my first course of action is to establish order and ensure the passengers are prepared."

Every airline has its own brand of safety codes they expect their employees to adhere to. As New Zealand Air advertises online, "Passenger safety is paramount. The ability to address and effectively communicate compliance requirements with passengers is a must. As part of our highly regarded team, you'll be responsible for the welfare, comfort, enjoyment and safety of all our customers from the minute they step onboard until they reach their destination."

Talk to the interviewer about any prior training you've had regarding how to react in a situation where passenger safety was at risk. Share any other insights you've had from your prior experience. If you have no prior experience, do some research, familiarize yourself with Air New Zealand's protocols, and express your eagerness to learn more.

"I would keep a cool head and react fast, thinking clearly on my feet. To keep others calm, you have to lead by example. My reaction to a safety threat would rely on my on-the-job training. I would follow company protocol and safety regulations. I believe if I were faced with a safety threat, I would do everything to ensure passengers remained calm."

Tell me about a time you successfully worked with a difficult boss, professor or coworker. What made this person difficult to work with?

"I once worked at a locally owned shop where the owner had high standards and a commanding personality. When the owner would walk into the store, employees would announce over their headset system that the owner was in the building so everyone could be prepared for his entrance into their department. He could be challenging and was rarely able to adapt, so we all had to adapt to the owner. We knew he had good intentions; however, the owner's people skills were a little rough, and he relied on us to represent the brand to our customers. I could see that he meant well and recognized that he wanted to do good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them. It was just his way."

This question aims to assess your interpersonal skills. They expect all their employees to treat people fairly and with respect in all their dealings and to act with integrity, honesty and transparency. Before they even consider hiring a candidate, they need to ensure that person will complement, not clash with, their teams, which means they'll need to get along and effectively work well with each other. As they explain on their website, "Our flight attendant team is close-knit, supportive, diverse and professional. You will get the opportunity to work with many experienced flight attendants, who pride themselves in creating an inclusive culture."

When answering questions like this, it is best to convey how you got along with the people on your teams, even though everyone has differences. Contextualize what made this person 'difficult' in this situation without speaking negatively about them or their personality. You want to come across as adaptable while showcasing how you typically get along with everybody. Highlight your communication skills, particularly your nondefensive communication skills, mediation and diplomacy. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone, and finish your response on a positive note.

"The new VP of Sales at my previous company was brought on with no experience in our industry and seemed to have little interest in building off of what we'd built. Instead, she expected us to adapt what we'd built to her, and it was up to us to manifest her vision. To get her to understand and embrace what had come before her arrival, I invited her on a business trip for an out-of-town client. I wanted her to meet my clients and spend one-on-one time together. We bonded as humans, mothers, and sales executives. She learned a lot about the company and industry, gained an understanding of the cues she'd missed, and I learned a lot about what skills she brought from her previous roles. She was able to correct course and came back from our trip as a better leader."

Aside from the airline industry, do you have other experience working in customer service?

"I am new to my career, so this will be my first customer service-based role. I have a few years of volunteer experience in a public-facing role, having volunteered with the local Food Bank, which gave me valuable customer service experience in an unofficial capacity while collaborating with a team."

Are you comfortable with Air New Zealand conducting a criminal record check on you?

"You will find that I have a clean criminal background. I'm willing to participate in any background check that Air New Zealand requires."

A clean criminal record is a must for all airline-related roles. Air New Zealand explains on their website that its successful candidates will go through an extensive vetting process, which includes references, medical clearance, police clearance, a swim test (50 metres under two minutes and treading water for one minute) and St John's Level 2 first aid course certification.

Air New Zealand expects its employees to "operate safely, responsibly and reliably at all times. Protect our people, property, and information. Comply with the Law." Keep your answer short and to the point. If you are concerned about what might turn up, such as a small infraction when you were younger, offer context, and conduct yourself with cooperative transparency.

"I can complete a full criminal background check as well as any drug testing, or other background checks that Air New Zealand requires."

Of all the places you've traveled, which stand out in your mind the most, and what made that experience unique?

"I would say Mexico City was phenomenal. We spent some time in the city, tasting wild local cuisine you can't get anywhere else. We also spent time in rural villages. Such a great experience. Such a great city. Another was hiking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, and footing it up to tiny villages and staying in rural teahouses. That experience changed my life."

This question is aimed at further gauging your passion for travel, your experience with different locales and cultures, which in turn may offer insights into your cultural competence, and how well suited you are to their lifestyle and culture. Don't limit yourself to places you've been. Expand your answer to places you are excited to visit and still have yet to explore. Showcase your passion for travel, your personality, and try to strike up conversation. The more memorable you are, the better.

"London is a great city, but I enjoyed tramping through the Scottish highlands more. Being able to explore castle ruins and ancient sites that to this day are still a mystery to those who live there. There's a mystical energy in those places. It is remarkable."

"I have considerable experience with this in both my professional and personal life. As you can see on my resume, I have a strong background in the industry, but I also belong to an underwater cave diving team. We are a pretty diverse crowd and sometimes have to camp overnight in those caves between dives. It can be pretty cramped quarters, but it is exhilarating nonetheless."

First Aid and CPR training is required for many roles in the airline industry, and Air New Zealand is no exception. Most positions require a current St John, Level 2 first aid certificate to be obtained before training. This will be requested if you successfully progress to the vetting stages. Assure your interviewer you currently meet these requirements or will meet them in the very near future.

"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be a bit disheartening, but it happens from time to time. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief with my manager and discuss what I could have done differently. Then, I learn from it and move on."

"In my role as Business Analyst, our team was required to take responsibility to fit the historical data with the new type of business requirement. I was responsible for the core task, translating historical business data and operation data if I failed to finish it on schedule, and others could do nothing. The translation work was massive, but I did not give up. Sometimes, I worked overnight, 24 hours working, to meet the deadline. We finally completed the project out of the directors' expectations. "When I have multiple priorities, I will ask my boss to rank them based on the most urgent. This method helps me to remain focused, and then I know I am concentrating where she needs me to. Never have I underdelivered on a deadline."

This question focuses on your ability to multitask and keep track of your progress on varying projects at the same time while preventing rework or a loss of productivity. "In my current role, our schedule is changed on a regular basis and always at short notice. I have been able to adapt very well to these frequent, sudden changes. In fact, the airline industry is full of sudden changes, most frequently, when flight times are changed. This affects everyone's schedule when it happens. I am able to roll with the punches and understand that I need to respond positively and swiftly when sudden changes are made."

Often in a job interview you'll be asked similarly phrased questions that have subtly different meanings. This tests your attention to detail. This particular question focusses less on your ability to problem solve and more on how well you multitask and your ability to prioritize the greater need. Since these situations can also tests one's patience, how you answer may reveal clues to your level of emotional intelligence, and how effortlessly you adapt to changing situations in a high pressure environment.

"I my current role as a flight attendant, I go the extra mile whenever I can. For example, recently our flight was delayed and our passengers were stuck in the cabin for an hour and a half before we finally were able to take off. So I okayed offering complimentary beverages to our customers mid flight. Right before we started our descent, I asked all passengers to remain seated until those who had connecting flights were able to disembark. I then asked those passengers who had connecting flights to hit their call button so we could speak with them. We then verified the tickets for each passenger, and helped them get their luggage out of the overhead compartment when we landed, making sure they were able to exit the plane safely first."

"In a core team of a multinational company, as a Data Analyst, our schedule is changed regularly and always at short notice. I have been able to adapt very well to these frequent, sudden changes since our team did a lot of ac hot analyses in a short time. Each project was worth millions of RMB. I completed these tasks perfectly, which proved my ability to work in a fast-paced working environment."

When have you faced an unexpected difficulty working in the airline industry?

"The biggest difficulty I have faced was when I was unexpectedly laid off during the last recession. The company was under financial strain, and some days we could not deliver the customer experience that we wanted. I strive to leave a good impression, and as the company was adapting to a new economy, I tried to overcome this by giving everything I had when it came to service, and then I faced that unexpected difficulty. By searching deeply for other skills and opportunities, I was able to earn enough to avoid financial strain and am quite proud of my ability to be versatile when required."

Your interviewer is curious about how well you work under pressure, how quickly you can think on your feet, and how resourceful you are when things don't go according to plan. How you face unexpected difficulty can say a lot about your character. As Air New Zealand emphasises, "The most important aspect of the job is the safety of your passengers. Flight attendants are trained so that in the very unlikely event of something going wrong, you are prepared to take action."

Tell your interviewer about a time you encountered an unexpected challenge. Use the STAR method (Situation/Task/Action/Result), describing the situation that unfolded, the required task, the action you took and the result of your actions.

"A terrible storm delayed tons of flights and stranded crew and passengers at the airport. We stayed at a hotel that night, but some passengers slept in the airport. When we finally boarded the plane the next day, many of our passengers were short-tempered or difficult to deal with. Mid-flight, one passenger was clearly under the influence of alcohol and became belligerent and offensive. Before things got out of hand, I came over and started talking to this passenger with a warm smile, asking many questions, empathizing with him and giving him a sounding board for his frustrations. Eventually, when I could tell his mood was levelling out, I made a subtle, good-natured comment that finally got a laugh out of him. Not much later, I launched into a long-winded, dull story that I knew he wouldn't be able to follow, and he fell asleep. When he awoke later, he seemed a little confused and embarrassed. Later, when everyone disembarked, security had a word with him at the destination airport. I just wanted to keep things even-keeled and make sure the passengers were safe by ensuring things didn't get out of hand."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

When discussing salary, you want to keep negotiations open for as long as possible while continuing to advertise your professional worth. There are many ways to advertise your professional worth, but there is no greater method than delivering an outstanding interview performance. When it comes time to actually discuss salary, feel free to be transparent with not only what you are currently earning, but what you projected earnings for the next year, how many performance reviews you'll receive.
