How do you like to spend your free time?

"On most days off, you'll find me doing several things at once. I'll either watch some documentaries while cooking in the kitchen. I am a hardcore foodie and health nut. I cook everything from scratch and do big batch cooking for the week. It helps free up time elsewhere and ensures my work week runs smoothly and that I get enough sleep each night, among other things."

"I am very focused on building my professional network. For the past six months, I have enjoyed membership at the local Chamber of Commerce. I have also joined a consultants mastermind, where we meet once every quarter to share tools, resources, and client success stories."

"I am active in my local and online consultants community. I recently started a LinkedIn group for Management Consultants in my city, and we will have our first meetup next month. Networking is a huge component of gaining business, and I plan to stay focused on those activities for years to come."

Accenture works with clients across many industries. Which of our clients' industries interests you the most?

"When researching Accenture, I saw that most of your clients are in the energy, finance, and education sectors. Your experience in these areas is part of what prompted me to apply since the bulk of my experience is there. I have a special interest in finance clients, particularly. I majored in finance while attending university, so it's a solid area for me."

If you are pursuing a position at Accenture, you should have reasonable expectations of the type of clients that Accenture takes on. You likely have some relative experience in the same sectors and should be able to answer this question easily. To gain their confidence in your abilities, assure them you're well equipped to jump in with their clients immediately. How do you prioritize multiple projects when they all seem equally important?

"I aim to be as effective as possible and use all minutes of the day. In my current role, I have three to five projects going on at once. I am the lead on some, the delegator on others, and the reviewer on others. By splitting up the roles and work responsibilities, my team and I can be the most efficient with our time."

I also estimate how long each task will take, so I can tackle the quick to-dos if I have a few minutes between projects."

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?

"I am a great problem solver because I can separate all aspects of a problem before studying it. I also like to bring more experienced team members in to add to the solution. I will never try to be a hero and solve a complicated problem without tapping into the resources around me."

"I have been told that I am an excellent problem solver, and I believe this is because I have a bit of an engineering mind. I can take the issue, work backward to solve it, and then use that resolution as a basis for avoiding the same issue in future projects. I am also a big-picture thinker, which allows me to come up with various resolutions per problem."

How do you react when your team misses a deadline?

"My team is highly efficient, and we rarely miss a deadline. When we do, it's surprising. Last year, we had a very challenging client who made significant changes throughout the project. These changes caused us to miss our deadline. I took action after that to ensure a better client onboarding process. We dug deeper with each client at the start, resulting in fewer mid-project changes."

Missing deadlines should be avoided at all costs. However, when multiple deadlines are due at the same time when priorities change, or all hands are needed on deck, sometimes missed deadlines are inevitable. There is a time and place for everything. We're all human, and sometimes mistakes happen. Yet, being asked to share details about a professional setback is a question worth posing in an interview.The interviewer would like to understand how you react to disappointment when things don't go according to plan. They are also curious about what you'll share and how you'll contextualize it. They're curious if you learn from your mistakes and hold yourself accountable. Your answer should speak to your EQ and your experience level.Provide an example of your missed deadline and walk the interviewer through the direction you took. Be sure to include the impact it had on the business or project aside from how late it was. Present the situation where it was in the team's best interest to miss that deadline over another. Do not deflect blame or point fingers at others on your team. Do not offer excuses. Avoid examples resulting in disciplinary action.

"When my team misses a deadline, it is disappointing. On the odd occasion that this has happened, I first ask my team for feedback. I want to know what I could have done better as a leader to make sure we hit our goal. Then, I ask them to look internally and tell me what they honestly feel they could have done differently. I prefer a collaborative approach to these types of conversations."

How do you exercise logic?

"I exercise logic every day, and my reasoning skills are strong. I have formal processes in place when making a client plan, and I also use past cases to help me come to logical conclusions in tougher situations."

The interviewer wants to ensure your approach to your work is governed by logic and reasoning as opposed to instincts or emotions. So this question asks you to offer your approach to your work. The interviewer would like to ensure you have high emotional intelligence and can exercise logic and good judgment, especially when working with your clients. Your projects as a management consultant will be based primarily on logical thinking and data analysis.

"Logical thinking is all about putting the pieces together. I do a lot of mental exercises in my spare time. The activities seem fun, but they also define my logic and reasoning skills. I have trained myself to think in conditional statements so that my brain automatically searches for the logic in any situation."

Why are you actively looking for employment opportunities?

"I feel a bit stuck at my current job. My reviews have consistently been great, and I am always getting a lot of praise and have been recruited to help in other areas consistently. Yet, the growth opportunity there isn't quite what they advertised when I took the job. They haven't found anyone whose attention to detail is as focused as mine, and they don't want to move me from the position they placed me in, which is something of a career dead end. They keep promising to promote me once they find a replacement, but it's clear they aren't actively looking for someone else to fill this position. So I figured it was best to move on before I burn out there."

Your situation may reveal what they can expect from you as a potential employee. Someone who quits before finding another job speaks to poor planning. Being terminated or laid off could present red flags as well. "One of my coworkers and I were doing a joint presentation to a prospective client. It was a high-stakes presentation, and he and I have very different styles of performance and preparation. Luckily, we both identified this as a potential obstacle from the get-go and came to the table with our ideas on how the outline would go and who would say what. Because we were both able to identify that we could clash and took a proactive approach to delegate tasks and distribute the presentation, we worked very well together and hit our performance out of the park."

"Recently, we received a project from a client that required my department to collaborate with another department. It was up to me to ensure that everyone worked well together. "What stands out the most to me is your team's expertise in strategic workforce planning. When you can optimize a client's workforce and introduce them to cutting-edge tech in their industry, you can change their profitability exponentially. I agree with the statement on your website that agile organizations use strategic workforce planning to stand out from the competition."

Before your interview, comb through the Accenture website. Determine which service seems to offer the most value from a client's point of view. Tell the interviewer what you believe to be the most essential service and explain why it is so significant. If you find more than one and feel it is a tie, share more than one. How do you relate to someone who is not good at communicating?

"I exhibit patience. I'll actively listen, mirror and validate, empathize, and take every measure to make sure they feel heard and to ensure they are understood. I'll then ask for clarification to ensure no information was left out. I'll then ask them to put it into writing before we take any further steps. Written and verbal communication are two separate skill sets, and a person is often more skilled at one than the other. So that's my last failsafe. How about you? Anything you do that I haven't mentioned? I'm a big fan of developing myself by asking others for their tips and tricks."

"I explain management consultants as people who help businesses clarify their operations and strategy. We help businesses of all kinds max out their profitability."

In consulting, much of your growth will come from feedback on client projects. How do you accept and implement feedback?

"I ask for feedback every month from one of my toughest-to-please managers. Her feedback is accurate, and I trust it. Once she tells me what I could try doing differently, I will take the time to research and plan how I can implement the change. This practice has helped me grow in my career significantly."

The interviewer wants to know what value you place on feedback, how it affects you emotionally, and if you implement an immediate change or prioritize a course correction. In the consulting space, you're continually putting yourself in vulnerable situations. Sometimes your recommendations and findings may not be welcomed or understood. Being open and receptive to feedback is desirable, especially when applied to professional growth. When delivering your answer, show your interviewer that you ask for feedback often, actively listen to the input openly, and communicate nondefensively. Taking what you know to be important and leaving the rest while not taking the feedback personally exhibits an ability to recognize and seize presented opportunities to implement positive growth.

"At the end of every project, I will give my clients and their team a survey focused specifically on my service, knowledge base, and if they felt they received the value from me that they expected. The feedback is blind, but I take every bit of it as though it came from the company's CEO. I analyze the comments for common denominators as well. If the feedback is consistent, I create a learning plan based around that common piece of feedback."

In your opinion, why do companies need consultants?

"I believe every company needs a consultant group at any stage in their business. Only the most invested will take that step and hire one. There may be pain points they remain stuck on due to differing opinions in the c-suite. Their processes may be antiquated, but no internal employee is knowledgeable enough to change that. Whatever the reason, I am prepared to show my new clients how wise it was to bring on Accenture to assist."

Have you worked with anyone who increased your awareness of cultural diversity?

"I worked with people from different cultural backgrounds, and growing up, my parents hosted exchange students from different countries in our home, so this is something I have a bit of exposure to. In most cases, upon introduction, I knew little about their culture and society. For some, I was amazed by what they endured. I had a vague idea, but not to the extent they shared. The hurdles they had to overcome and the sheer determination to beat the odds stacked against them. Despite what they endured, they consider themselves lucky. It humbles you."

Diversity is a repeated aspect of Accenture's culture. "You must exemplify Accenture's attitude to inclusion and diversity, valuing diversity and encouraging an open, trusting, and inclusive environment. " This question gauges your comfort in working with others from backgrounds different from yours. "I use trusted and reputable sources for industry news, such as Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and McKinsey. When it comes to tech, I have a subscription to MIT Technology Review. If you have any recommendations, I am happy to hear them!"

"To expand my professional knowledge, I have started an online course through NYU on microeconomics. I wanted to take the initiative to learn more on this topic and keep my knowledge current. To grow personally, I have read a couple of books on leadership. I love to read and learn from other professionals and behavioral experts."

"I have much experience with application management and implementation tools. I have leveraged software and other tech offerings from companies such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Cisco. These tools are incredibly important for accelerating projects and elevating the result."

There are many tools, digital and otherwise, that are widely utilized in the consulting industry. These are all designed to make your job significantly more manageable. To set yourself as a desirable candidate, you should familiarize yourself with their expectations. If you are unsure of the tech and tools Accenture uses, you can ask. "I have given many presentations in my consulting career and have found that when I start with a story, give some facts, and end with how those facts are pertinent to the story and the client's pain point, I can capture and keep the attention of my audience. Everyone loves a great story, especially one that is relatable to their personal or professional situation."

In the management consulting industry, there is a high likelihood that you will be required to give presentations to your clients or your group. Whether you have experience giving presentations, you should understand the difference between a terrible performance and one that captures your audience's attention all the way through. "My ideal clients are receptive to change, focused on scaling while never forgetting their roots and what their employees offer them. The industries in which I am most interested in working are the finance, real estate, and investment realms; however, I have found that there are excellent clients in every industry imaginable."

"When I was an independent consultant, I would work with clients anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. I would spend time immersed in their environment and then create a brief report based on the data and my direct exposure."

Also, I must immerse myself in the culture, so if I work with a client for a few months, I will spend a few days inside their office, learning their operations first-hand."

How do you manage the life cycle of your projects, ensuring on-time deliverables and deadlines?

"When I take on a new project, I break it into four phases - Initiate, Plan, Execute, Close. These four phases are broken down into categories with a linear timeline attached. Asana and Slack are my 'go-to' tools to ensure the entire team is aware of their tasks and deadlines. I book regular check-ins with my team and schedule client touch points. My high-level view of the project, through all stages, ensures there are rarely surprises and that everyone is on the same page."

"I have not formally been asked to train any other consultants in my career; however, I make it a habit of taking our firms' newer consultants under my wing to ensure they are off to a successful start. I will share with them some tools and resources that I find helpful and remind them that my door is open whenever they have a question. I am very open to formal leadership opportunities should those arise with Accenture."
