2. How do you like to spend your spare time?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer asks this question to gain a more casual insight into your interests and motivators. It will help them determine how well your personality will complement or clash with the others on their team and whether you'll be able to build relations. It will also serve as an indicator of your work/life balance. Employees need to have stress-relievers outside of work to keep their stress levels down and productivity up while at work.

Answer Example
"I spend my free time learning. I'm not one for watching television unless it is a documentary movie or series. I'm mostly about having new experiences and learning something new. Right now, I am reading Steve Jobs's Biography and watching a documentary series on the industrial revolution."

3. If we were to hire you, what will be your biggest initial challenge in this position?
What You Need to Know
An ideal candidate should spend the first 90 days building relationships, asking questions, and learning how things are done and why they're done the way they are. Without that information, it is impossible to earn the trust of your team, the confidence in the quality of your work, and the building blocks to make a lasting impact.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I'd say my initial challenge will be earning the trust of my fellow teammates and getting up to speed as quickly and proficiently as I can. I'm the type who's supercharged to prove my worth, but that has to be done right; otherwise, it's self-defeating. I'd work on learning the ropes, gaining as much of a big-picture scope as I can, while building relationships. It's my philosophy that it's my job to make my bosses' jobs easier. I have a keen eye for details and would point out my observations while asking questions. I'd put my all to earn my keep and build the trust of my coworkers to ensure I complimented my new team."

13. Do you have any questions for me?
What You Need to Know
Before your interview, write down everything you want to know before committing to the company. Think about what your ideal employer looks like, what the supervisors and team leaders are like in this new role, how many supervisors are there, and which of the five leadership types they display, what kind of growth opportunities you are looking for in your next role, and the time frames you would like to advance to the next phases of your career development. Each question you ask yourself should generate questions for your interviewer. Accepting an interview and a position for employment are commitments. Think about the information you need before committing to a role. The more questions you ask, the more enhanced your communications skills will seem, and the more likely you are to be self-guided and successful at your job, and it shows you've given the deserved consideration before committing to a new role.

Some might procrastinate tasks that they dread by finding excuses to keep working on a project that is already good enough. So make sure, while presenting your example, that it reflects holding the interests of the team above your interests. There's nothing wrong with showing initiative, so long as it benefits the team. Discuss a time when you were extra thorough in completing a work-related project.

1st Answer Example
"I have to be extra thorough from time to time when I have especially detail-oriented clients. Often this will mean spending additional time on calls with them to highlight project changes. I am okay with being extra thorough when needed."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I am always thorough, but we have monthly team meetings to discuss our performance metrics. That reporting takes a little longer."

28. How does your past professional experience translate to this role?
What You Need to Know
Before your interview, thoroughly research the role you are vying for. Once you understand what to expect, make lists of areas where your skills will shine in this role and the areas you lack experience. Once you've done this, perform as much research on those areas where you have room for growth, and create a plan on how you intend to improve in those areas to grow in your career. This will help you answer questions about your strengths, transferable skills, and growth opportunities. Finally, incorporate them into a revised five-year career plan. 29. What are your salary expectations?
What You Need to Know
It's never a good idea for the interviewee to bring up pay too early, but once the interviewer addresses it, it's fair game. The same goes for the benefits they offer because that is another form of compensation that should be considered. For example, if your last employer had a great benefits package with zero out-of-pocket expenses for you, and the position you are interviewing for offers no health benefits; that means you could be paying that premium out of pocket on the health exchange. For some, that could be upwards of $1500 a month. So, effectively, you could be earning far less in your next position than you did in your last one.
Good questions to ask when quantifying your number are how frequently pay increases occur and how the pay structure works. You can also ask what other health benefits or retirement packages, as well as any incentives, bonuses, or other perks they might offer. Feel free to share what your previous positions offered and see what they come back with.

1st Answer Example

2nd Answer Example
"I am currently making $100,000 per year with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that aligns with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

30. How do you assign priority when you have multiple projects due at the same time?
What You Need to Know
Think about how you decide which task needs your attention the most when you feel torn between multiple projects. Assure the interviewer that you prioritize the goals and needs of the team above your own. Exhibit sound judgment, integrity, strong time management skills, adaptability, and leadership potential. Also, show that you aren't shy to ask for help when you need it, are aware of your limitations, and try not to bite off more than you can chew. Ambition, innovation, and experience are the notes you want to strike.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I will determine which project requires my attention by the number of hours we are behind and then the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require additional hours from me. Never have I underdelivered on a deadline."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
2nd Answer Example
Prioritizing is a skill that requires practice. There are many approaches you can take. Here are some suggestions:
1) Make a list. By thinking through and writing down each item that needs completion, you can see it on paper.
2) Mark what is urgent or essential. Take into account deadlines and meetings.
3) Order each task based on effort and estimated value. Considering due dates and how long it will take to do each item (also considering how much time you have).
In answering this question, show the interviewer that you have a system to think through what needs to happen and when. The better you can prioritize, the more productive you will be, making you an asset to their company!

31. What sources do you lean on to solve a complicated problem?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer wants to know that you can think outside the box or even ask for help when you are stuck on a complicated problem. Your answer will reveal your determination, how resourceful you are, and your communication skills. A performer who has difficulty communicating or is fearful of looking uninformed or inexperienced will go it alone, often taking much longer to progress in their work and delaying the rest of their team. Strive to exhibit sound judgment, a propensity for being resourceful and taking calculated risks, initiative, and leadership potential, so long as it respects the chain of command. Offer some relevant examples based on your industry. Show the interviewer that you can think quickly on your feet and are self-guided in your work, even when relying on your fellow teammates as a resource to succeed.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
1st Answer Example
"When faced with a complicated problem, I will look to the resources my current company has provided me. The answer is almost always in there. If it's a moral dilemma rather than a knowledge-based dilemma, I will ask my supervisor for his thoughts and opinion since I value him as a mentor and expert in our industry."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"To solve a complex issue, I will reach out to a manager or mentor from a previous role to ask them how they've handled such issues in the past. I am always ready to dive back into our handbook, but these scenarios are often not covered there, which is why I value a human, experiential approach. I know that many folks in the industry have so much to teach me and have probably already "been-there-done-that," so I love to utilize them as a resource."

32. What value do you place on building working relationships?
What You Need to Know
Talk to the interviewer about how you navigate developing relationships with coworkers when you start a new job. Show that you are a big-picture-thinker and understand before team collaboration and innovation are possible, you have to earn their trust and familiarize yourself with their work styles while introducing them to yours. Lean on their experience as a resource, and show that you are a team-oriented resource to them. It will also offer insights into your personality type and whether you're an introvert or an extrovert. Regardless, express value in bonding with your fellow teammates.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I value my relationships with my coworkers because we support each other and make each other laugh when the work environment becomes intense. I have a coworker that I eat lunch with every day. We've helped each other by simply listening to what's going on in each other's lives. It's nice to have colleagues who understand you on a personal level."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"To accomplish anything in a job, you need your team members. I rely on my team members to get projects done. I will often call them when I need advice or to help pick up the slack when I'm in a pinch. If you don't have a good rapport with your co-workers, it can limit your ability to be great at your job."

33. Share with me your career progression, and what’s kept you from advancing further along.
What You Need to Know
When an interviewer sees a slowdown in the career progression on your resume, they'll want to determine whether it was by choice or the result of an unforeseen circumstance. They want to differentiate the consistency of your dedication to your career from the inconsistency of your career advancement. Be honest and explain the life circumstances that resulted in your detour. Make sure you communicate clearly, choosing your words wisely to make sure they communicate what you intend to say. You don't want to accidentally betray your narrative through semantics.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I agree with you that my career progression has been slower than some. You will see that between 2001 and 2009, I worked for the same company without an increase in my job title. The company was too small to offer a promotion to me as the next level was ownership, and the business wasn't for sale. After this, from 2009-2012, I was on leave as I needed to care for my ailing parents. The growth since returning to work has been steady, but those years were a bit of a standstill for me. I am ready to spring into action now and forge ahead in my career."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 22nd, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Early in my career, I was left to care for an elderly, sick parent. Her care required more of me than expected, so I allowed my career to sit and wait. I am happy with that decision. Spending those last precious moments with a loved one is worth the setback."

What You Need to Know
A job search isn't just a one-sided hunt. This must also feel like a good fit for your long-term career plans, and the environment must be conducive to a quality work life. Having a quality work life will contribute to your work/life balance. The average person spends eight hours of a workday sleeping and eight hours working. Your answer to this question will show the value you place on your eight hours of professional time. It will also offer insights into your personality and what you are looking for. Ideally, you've thoroughly researched this position and know it aligns with your ideal working environment. So, explain how their company, culture, and environment fit the mold.
