"We recently implemented split shifts at my current job, which I do not always agree with because they defer from a good work/life balance. With that said, I understand that split shifts cut labor costs and the need to hire additional staff."

Start by telling the interviewer that you follow all the company rules and support the company's leadership decisions regarding regulations. The interviewer wants to hear that you are not a rule-breaker and you support the rules the company has put into place. After all, there had to be some logic to their professional decision! Your willingness to remain a team player shows the interviewer that you respect decisions even when you recognize you would make different choices sometimes.

"The company implemented a rule that I didn't like right before I left. The company decided to reduce the employees' health benefits and not cover spouses or children. That would require employees to have $600 per month deducted from their paycheck to cover their spouses and children. For that reason, I gave my two weeks' notice and applied for this position."

When a problem requires a quick solution, how do you respond?

"When an urgent problem arises at work, I respond in a calm and assuring manner. I am a natural leader, which means that my team often looks to me for answers. Last week, we had an administrative employee no-show on a crucial and busy day. I called a temp agency, and they filled the position in one hour."

When it comes to complex problem solving, the decisions do not always arrive quickly. It takes practice, experience, and confidence to learn which decisions yield the best results. Problems that require you to act quickly can be emergencies, such as knowing where the fire extinguisher is and grabbing it fast enough to put out a small grease fire in the company kitchen or being asked to take on a new responsibility and only given five minutes to decide if you are prepared to take it on. Going with your gut is a skill, and the more you learn to trust your intuition, the easier it becomes to make these types of decisions. "I react swiftly in emergencies. Perhaps my skills come from my years as a parent, having to think fast and put out fires! If a quick solution is required, I review the facts and make a decision based on risk factors."

How do you determine priorities when you have multiple projects due?

"I determine which project requires my attention by the number of hours we are behind and the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that this requires an additional commitment of hours from me. I have never underdelivered on a deadline."

Explain how you decide which task needs your attention most when you feel torn between multiple projects. Assure the interviewer that you can be diligent when assessing your priorities.

Prioritizing is a skill that requires practice. There are many approaches you can take. Here are some suggestions:1) Make a list. "I keep track of my priorities by a four-quadrant method, which is URGENT/IMPORTANT, URGENT/NOT IMPORTANT, NOT URGENT/IMPORTANT, AND NOT IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT. This always helped me to create a priority list of all the projects I am working on."

When have you shown integrity at work?

"In my last position, I was responsible for the cash deposit every day. There was never a discrepancy in the four years I worked there. I best show my integrity by being a consistently reliable employee."

When have you had to be extra thorough in completing tasks?

"I have to be extra thorough from time to time when I have especially detail-oriented clients. Often, this will mean spending additional time on calls with them to highlight project changes. I am okay with being extra thorough when needed."

"I am always thorough, but we have monthly team meetings to discuss our performance metrics. That reporting takes a little longer."

"I usually am always thorough in my job, but I am extra careful in case we have a demanding customer or employee who seeks additional details in the project. Also, at the time of any changes in the scope of work, I am thorough as any change can impact the timelines, cost, quality, resource requirement drastically."

Tell me about your greatest work-related accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating from University as an honors student while working full time in a related field. I was at the top of my class and working full time. This success showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and receive recognition for my dedication."

"There are many accomplishments in my professional career though I would like to highlight the recent one, which gave us an edge ahead of many of our competitors and helped us to increase our revenues quickly. I helped the organization to clear US FDA Audits in Jan and August this year with ZERO issues reported on Data Integrity and IT Compliance. It was like a dream success for my team and me as we have been putting our best effort to improve and close all gaps in the environment."

How do you handle a dispute with a coworker or supervisor?

"Luckily, I have had good coworkers and supervisors in the past with minimal conflict. If there is an issue with a colleague, I like to nip it in the bud. I ask them to speak in private, address the issue, and come up with a resolution that makes us both happy."

It is not uncommon for employees or supervisors to have a dispute or disagreement with someone they work with. The interviewer knows this and wants to see how you handled disputes in the past. Your response gives the interviewer insight into your problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution skills, which are essential to possess in any profession.

"Over the years, I have found the involved parties can fix all conflicts with honest, open communication. When both parties can explain why they are bothered by something and decide how to handle the situation maturely, it seems less conflict will happen in the future. Most conflicts are simply a misunderstanding or lack of communication."

"I believe that this interview has been quite informative, and I am happy with my performance. Is there anything that I can clarify for you from this conversation?"

This question can create feelings of stress and anxiety, so it's best to be prepared. Be honest with the interviewer about how you feel the interview has gone so far.

"I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview, though I am trying my best. If there is anything more that I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

"I am keeping an eye out for viable positions. Although I am not in the final stages with any other company, I am actively seeking a new position."

It always puts a little bit of fire under the hiring manager if they are aware that you are actively looking for a new position. Tell the interviewer about your search so far.

"Yes, I am active in my job search and am in the final stages with another company. Do you have a timeline in mind for a decision on this position?"

"Yes, I am actively seeking good opportunities in the States and Europe. I am in discussion with a few consultants in Europe though nothing has been finalized yet."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary-based questions arise.

"I am currently making $100,000 per year with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

Besides vacation and holiday time, how many days were you absent from work last year?

"I was absent from work five days last year. I had LASIK surgery, and my doctor recommended taking one week to recover. I arranged the time off with my supervisor before scheduling the surgery, and she allowed me to use sick leave. Other than that, I did not miss any other days last year."

The company wants to hire responsible, dependable employees who show up to work when scheduled. The interviewer asks this question to evaluate your work attendance in the past year. If you called off work many times in the past year, they might hesitate to offer you the position unless your reasons were excusable.

"I was absent from work two days last year. I missed one day because my son had strep throat, and my husband was out of town. I needed to take my son to the doctor, and I called my supervisor and notified him two hours before my shift. I had a doctor's note, and my supervisor allowed me to use a sick day. The second day I missed was due to a minor vehicle accident. I was rear-ended on my way to work and went to the emergency room for evaluation. I called my supervisor from the accident scene, and he said to take off as much time as needed. I was fine and able to return to work the next day."

If you could choose any special area of focus with AbbVie, which would you choose?

"I am currently working as a Clinical Research Assistant and would like to eventually grow into a Principal Scientist role, or something of the like, with AbbVie. My primary goal is to find a long-term home where I can continue to expand my knowledge in the area of (choose an area of study)."

"I can honestly say that I do not have a preference as of yet. As I continue to carve out my career, that may change; however, for the moment, I am happy to be working in the biotech industry in any related focus."

"At AbbVie, I know that XYZ is one of your primary focuses. This particular focus is one of the reasons I applied to work here; the study of XYZ is a particular passion of mine."

"We have so many options when it comes to research topics. If I had to choose just one area of research, I would choose to research autism, and the spectrum, in full. My little brother received an autism diagnosis recently, and I have the drive to learn more about it."

"I would choose to work on Pre-eclampsia because there is no known treatment for this condition during pregnancy. It causes a serious threat to the life of the unborn baby. The reason for choosing this particular disorder is my daughter was born extremely premature in 6.5 months as my wife got Pre-eclampsia, and Doctors said there is no cure for this. In this world, there are thousands of babies who die due to this disorder. It would be beneficial for humanity."

"I chose a career in Pharma/Biotech because I enjoy the study of medicine, science, and the correlation between them. It's an ever-changing industry that never becomes dull."

"I have considered furthering my education to include a Ph.D. It would need to be in tandem with full-time employment, but I would certainly consider achieving this goal through evening and weekend coursework."

"Oh yes! I am a big believer in higher education. These days, to be a stand-out candidate or employee, I think that having a Ph.D. is best."

By this time in your career, you should have advanced further. What has slowed down your career progression?

"I agree that my career progression has been slower than some. You will see that between 2001 and 2009, I worked for the same company without an increase in my job title. The company was too small to offer a promotion as the next level was ownership, and the business wasn't for sale. After this, from 2009 to 2012, I was on leave to care for my ailing parents. The growth since returning to work has been steady, but those years were a bit of a standstill for me. I am ready to spring into action now and forge ahead in my career."

"I am most impressed by the way the pharma industry has switched its focus from treatment to prevention. It's a great way to flip our thinking in the industry and will save the lives of so many people."

"In my opinion, Organizations have adopted the strategy from Massive to Lean, Shift from West to East, and Rise of Biosimilars are the most significant developments in the pharmaceuticals in the last three years."

In your opinion, what is the biggest development in Biotechnology in the past three years?

"There have been so many developments in biotechnology over the past three years, but I feel that the biggest was the development in gene editing. It's an incredibly controversial and intriguing practice."

"There is a multitude of biotech developments from which to choose! I recently read about new methods of manipulating human cells to beat a range of diseases. According to Fortune Magazine, Chinese scientists have launched the first CRISPR gene-editing trial for the treatment of cancer. It's all pretty incredible, isn't it?"

"3D visualization and augmented reality for surgery, HPV vaccine, and 3D Printed Organs are three major developments in the past few years."

What industry related changes do you foresee in the next 12 months?

"I read on your website that AbbVie is expected to see a 43% increase in the sales of product ABC. This fact piqued my interest as I have seen reports that forecast a strong increase in the use of product ABC for alternative medical therapies. There are continual changes in this industry, but I see this particular one being very significant in the upcoming months."

"I recently read an article by Q1 Productions that addressed this exact topic. They mentioned in the article that 2018 is going to be a great year for the pharma industry due to the economic upturn. The thought is that this will increase stock prices, thus allowing pharma companies to grow their offerings, expand operations, and further their research and reach. It's an exciting thought!"

"Well, there are three perspectives, first change from the regulations perceptive, which I think won't be too aggressive in the next 12 months. Regulatory bodies are already doing a great job of keeping the benchmarks high for pharmaceutical companies. Second is approvals of many breakthrough life-saving drugs and biosimilars in the next 12 months will be high. The third is possible acquisitions in the industries as a good number of large companies are trying to consolidate the businesses across the globe."

"I have worked within Pharma/Biotech for the past 15 years. I started in a lab assistant role and am now at the supervisory level with my current company. I stay in this industry because the opportunities are endless. I would be thrilled to continue my career growth in this industry with AbbVie."

If it's a moral dilemma rather than a knowledge-based dilemma, I ask my supervisor for his thoughts and opinion since I value him as a mentor and expert in our industry."

The interviewer wants to know that you can think outside the box or even ask for help when you are stuck on a complicated problem.Maybe you look to a mentor or boss for advice. Perhaps you turn to handbooks, manuals, and systems for help. Offer some relevant examples based on your industry. I know that there are so many folks in the industry who have so much to teach me and have probably already "been-there-done-that," so I love to utilize them as a resource."

"The first thing I look for is the procedures to handle the application/instrument, whatever it is. The second thing I look for OEM Manuals, which generally have the troubleshooting guides. Next, I lookout for people who have the expertise or solved similar issues in the past, and I couple everything with my experience to crack the complicated tasks."

"I follow multiple medical journals and blogs related to changes in the Pharma/Biotech industry. My favorite is wiley.com, which is a strong source for updates in a variety of related medical studies."

"I have set up some industry-related Google alerts, and I also subscribe to Pharma Forum, Science Direct, and Medical Futurist online. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn, so if you have recommendations, I am happy to hear them!"

"The source I prefer to read first is the news/guidelines from regulatory bodies. I also love to read pharma journals, the news from our competitor's web pages. I have been a part of a few groups of like-minded people on the internet. All these sources keep me informed."

What do you do when you are given an assignment and don't know how to complete the task?

"It depends on the assignment. If I believe I can research it and figure out how to complete the task, I will go that route. Suppose the job is something particular to the company I am working for, and there is a specific way to complete it. In that case, I will tell the person giving me the assignment that I am unfamiliar with how to do the task. I will ask them to show me or point me in the right direction so I complete the assignment correctly."

The interviewer asks this question to gain insight into your communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. They want to understand how you tackle unfamiliar assignments and know you will ask for help when needed.

"I like to research how to perform unfamiliar tasks since I like using critical thinking skills. If I cannot find an answer during my research, I will ask a senior colleague or my supervisor for guidance."

What would you do if a coworker asked you to help steal?

"If a coworker asked me to help steal, I would be appalled. I do not condone theft of any kind, and I would let my coworker know that. I would report the incident to my immediate supervisor and document the encounter."

The interviewer would like to know how you would react if put in an awkward or potentially harmful situation like being asked by a coworker to steal with them. Theft can occur in many ways in the workplace and is not necessarily reserved to blatantly taking a product from the company. Stealing can also be described as a coworker asking you to punch in for them before they arrive at work or sharing confidential, proprietary information with others.

"If a coworker asked me to help them steal anything from the company, I would tell them no and immediately report them to my supervisor. I cannot tolerate people who think it is okay to steal from others."

In your opinion, why is it important to develop relationships with coworkers?

"I value my relationships with my coworkers because we support each other and make each other laugh when the work environment becomes intense. I have a coworker that I eat lunch with every day. We've helped each other by simply listening to what's happening in each other's lives. It's nice to have colleagues who understand you on a personal level."

"To accomplish anything in a job, you need your team members. I rely on my team members to get projects done. I often call them in when I need advice or to help pick up the slack when I'm in a pinch. If you don't have a good rapport with your co-workers, it can limit your ability to be great at your job."

"Project OR Tasks could not be called truly successful if there was a lack of collaboration within the team member and different teams involved in the project. Relations matters a lot as relationships influence the result in a big way. The positive associations with coworkers bring the best out of them, and everyone achieves the goals. The development of a good relationship also boosts the morale of the teams."
