Boeing's Recruitment Process

Boeing's recruitment process varies between roles and departments; however, these are the interview stages you are likely to go through:

Stage 1: Online Application

Stage 2: Talent Acquisition Advisor

Stage 3: Aptitude Testing

Stage 4: Group Interviews

Stage 5: Hiring Decision & Job Offer

Stage 1: Online Application

When you visit Boeing's careers site you'll notice a wide range of job openings across numerous career areas. Boeing offers job opportunities across categories like:

Once you find your job of interest, you can apply via Boeing's online career portal. The system will prompt you to create a profile on the company's career portal powered by Workday.

After entering your personal contact information, you will need to provide digital documents such as a cover letter, resume, and other details regarding your background and skills.

Then, your online application will go through Boeing's Applicant Tracking System (ATS) screening process and filters.

Stage 2: Talent Acquisition Advisor

This stage marks the start of your interview journey with Boeing. As an initial step, to ensure the interview process goes smoothly for you and the company, Boeing will match you up with a Talent Acquisition Advisor. This person will be your point of contact through the interview process. You might meet with your Talent Acquisition Advisor via phone or video conference. You will most often be in touch with your advisor through email communication.

Your Talent Acquisition Advisor will let you know if you should expect to complete any aptitude tests or job-specific skills-based assessments. They will also provide you with any instructions needed to prepare for upcoming interviews and assessments.

Boeing is a proud EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) employer. If you need accommodations during the interview process, particularly while approaching the aptitude tests and assessments, you can ask your Talent Acquisition Advisor for options.

Stage 3: Aptitude Testing

Boeing uses Aptitude Tests to get to know you as a candidate and measure your readiness and fit for the position. Boeing hires full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees for an extensive range of positions across numerous job categories. Some of the departments and roles that may require pre-employment assessments include:

The type of assessments and how many you complete will vary depending on the role. However, most Boeing candidates complete tests based on Situational Judgement, Numerical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Mechanical Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning.

In addition to these assessments, Boeing may ask you to complete specific job-related tasks including Presentations, Case Studies, and Coding Challenges.

Learn more about the type of assessments you might face here.

Stage 4: Group Interviews

Most Boeing candidates report having at least two interviews with 2-4 interviewers present. The interviewers will be a blend of managers, hiring leaders, and current Boeing employees.

These interviews may happen virtually or on-site. This path depends on your location, role, and if you have applied to a remote-based opportunity.

For virtual interviews, Boeing uses Webex, a video conference platform. If you are asked to attend a video-based interview, your Talent Acquisition Advisor will send you a Webex invitation ahead of time. This invitation will come with instructions on how to use the virtual platform.

During your group interviews you might be asked questions like:

You may also encounter behavioral and situational interview questions such as:

Boeing carefully instructs its candidates to practice the STAR format for answering behavioral-based interview questions. You can learn more about STAR here.

Overall, the interviewers need to determine if your skills, past experiences, and attitude towards work will fit Boeing and meet the hiring departments' needs. If the interviewers see a potential fit, they will move you to the next interview stage.

As you progress in your group interviews, the questions might become more challenging than those asked in your initial meeting. Be sure to practice answering questions like:

Stage 5: Hiring Decision & Job Offer

Once you have completed the Boeing interview stages, the decision-makers who interviewed you will review their notes and decide on your candidacy. During this time, the HR team at Boeing might call your job references and conduct any required background checks.

If you receive a job offer, you can expect a phone or video call or an in-person meeting to review the offered salary and other compensation details.

What Kind of Aptitude Tests Does Boeing Use?

Depending on the position to which you're applying, Boeing may assess your skills and abilities in the following categories:

Assessment Type: Situational Judgement

What kind of questions are on a Situational Judgement Test?

Situational Judgement Tests (also referred to as SJT's) usually address hypothetical workplace scenarios. You are provided with a specific situation and asked to choose the best possible reaction from a series of potential responses. Often, all of the reactions seem reasonable, which is why SJT's can be tricky. It's up to you to determine which response/reaction aligns best with the company's preferred behaviors and values.

Why does Boeing assess a candidates' Situational Judgement?

Boeing assesses Situational Judgement so they can determine how you approach specific situations you may encounter in their work environment. They also want to determine if your responses to various situations align with Boeing's values. You can read more about these values here.

Situational Judgement question example:

All month, you have been busy working long hours on a client's project that has been interesting but challenging. You have been working closely with a graduate student who was recently hired, and you have seen their confidence grow with your mentoring. There is still a significant amount of work left on the project over the next two weeks, and your manager asks if you can lead a new project in a different department. How would you respond?

a) Agree to lead a new project while micromanaging your colleague on the first project to ensure there are no mistakes.

b) Accept the second project and explain to your manager that you will need to work overtime hours and weekends to complete both tasks, ensuring your colleague on the first project is not left alone.

c) Be honest with your manager and tell them you do not want to accept the new project because you have been working long hours and are looking forward to a break when the first project is completed in two weeks.

d) Tell your manager that you would be happy to take on the second project. Assure your manager that you can deliver by giving your colleague on the first project more autonomy while meeting with them regularly to measure the progress and assist when needed.

Assessment Type: Numerical Reasoning

What kind of questions are on a Numerical Reasoning Test?

A Numerical Reasoning Test will include questions about percentages and ratios, financial analysis, number sequences, and more. Numerical Reasoning tests can be challenging due to strict time constraints. However, they typically only use 6 basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios. There are no algebra or geometry questions, but you will need to tackle questions that have several steps. Examples might include understanding and drawing information from charts, calculating expenses, deciphering time estimates, statistical analyses, and using basic mathematical reasoning to solve problems.

Why does Boeing assess candidates for Numerical Reasoning?

Boeing asks Numerical Reasoning questions to assess your ability to quickly and accurately reason with numbers. The company wants to see how well you interpret and manipulate mathematical data. Performing well on your Numerical Reasoning Test assures Boeing that you understand common numerical concepts used on the job.

Numerical Reasoning question example:

John is a college soccer player. His team played 48 matches in 2020. Out of 48 matches, they lost 15. What percent of matches did John's team win?

a) 15%

b) 33%

c) 31.25%

d) 68.75%

Assessment Type: Logical Reasoning

What kind of questions are on a Logical Reasoning Test?

Logical Reasoning tests typically include a series of images with a series of changing patterns. The goal is to determine the sequential changes and correctly determine the next change in the sequence. Some questions show basic changes, while others can be more challenging and feature two or more variables that require closer examination.

Why does Boeing assess candidates for Logical Reasoning?

Boeing asks Logical Reasoning questions to assess your ability to quickly and accurately reason using keen perception and observation skills. Your performance on a Logical Reasoning Test will help Boeing understand how strong you are in logical problem-solving.

Logical Reasoning question example:

Which of the following patterns would follow in the given sequence?

Assessment Type: Mechanical Reasoning

What kind of questions are on a Mechanical Reasoning Test?

Mechanical Reasoning Tests assess your understanding of mechanical concepts and how mechanical equipment and tools work. Mechanical Reasoning tests usually contain multiple-choice questions that you need to answer under fast-paced timed conditions. These questions touch on engineering and other technical topics.

Why does Boeing assess candidates for Mechanical Reasoning?

If applicable to your role, Boeing will test for Mechanical Reasoning skills as a way to measure your ability to understand and apply critical mechanical concepts. The speed at which you can solve a mechanical problem will show the interviewers how rapidly you can solve issues under pressure. Your results will also highlight how well you understand certain mechanical situations you'll face on the job.

Mechanical Reasoning question example:

In the diagram shown below, which of the pulleys will complete the least revolutions per minute?

Hint: Compare the size of the pulleys.

a) A

b) B

c) C

d) D

Assessment Type: Verbal Reasoning

What kind of questions are on a Verbal Reasoning Test?

Verbal Reasoning refers to your ability to grasp information from oral and written text. First, you'll read a passage of text that you've never seen before. Then, you must interpret the text by answering a series of questions. Each series of text may have up to 5 questions related to the passage. Answer options are in multiple-choice format, typically asking you to choose from 'True,' 'False,' or 'Cannot Say.'

Why does Boeing assess candidates for Verbal Reasoning?

Boeing gives Verbal Reasoning assessments so they can test your level of comprehension and understanding while reading text. How well you perform in a Verbal Reasoning test also helps the hiring authorities at Boeing to understand how well you communicate. Comprehension is another factor Boeing considers in the hiring process. Your test results will show your ability to understand the information you are reading and then mentally organize it in a meaningful way.

Verbal Reasoning question example:

Given that new car registration of electric cars was overall higher than the registration of diesel-engine cars, it was a great year for electric-car companies even if the pandemic played a role in sales.

According to the most recent Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) data, new electric car registrations in the State of Hawaii have increased in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 1,527 to 7,500 compared to the first three quarters of the same year which saw an increase from 855 to 1200 new electric car registration. The DMV has pointed to this statistic in support of their claim that more environmentally friendly cars are being purchased and it is already having an impact on the environment.

However, according to some experts, the spike in the last quarter of 2020 was an anomaly caused by an unexpected global pandemic that left many car companies scrambling to sell their vehicles in an unstable economic crisis. As a result, car experts suggest that the increase in registration did not in fact produce a higher net outcome for companies due to the lowered prices of vehicles. Moreover, the trend of increased registration of electric cars will not continue but is expected to decrease once the global pandemic recedes.

However, another group of experts also point to the fact that the DMV has not released its new diesel-engine car registration statistics which also grew in the last quarter of 2020 from 1200 to 3600 new registrations. Despite the pandemic, diesel-engine car prices did not change but remained consistent during the entire 2020 calendar year.

Statement Electric car sales increased in 2020.

a) True

b) False

c) Cannot Say

Job-Specific Tasks & Assignments

In addition to various aptitude tests, Boeing may ask you to complete specific job-related tasks to prove that you have the skills needed to succeed in the position.

These skills demonstrations might include:

Presentations. If Boeing asks you to do a presentation demonstration, this means you will give a presentation to a group of interviewers. Your interviewers will represent a specific audience, and you will be provided with parameters to follow when creating your presentation.

Case Studies. Case studies are when Boeing gives you a hypothetical job-related problem along with some data and information that relates to the problem. Then, the interviewers ask you to analyze the situation and make recommendations to solve the problem.

Coding Challenges. If you are applying to a job that requires computer coding knowledge, Boeing may require you to complete a series of coding challenges. These challenges could also include whiteboarding. Boeing may also give you access to their 'virtual playground' where you will complete a series of simulations and challenges.

Boeing's Values

Boeing is extremely particular about who they hire. The hiring authorities need to ensure that, aside from having the proper knowledge and competencies to do the job successfully, you are also a fit for the company's values. They need to ensure that you hold yourself to the highest standards in your work, take care of your work, and take care of your colleagues.

The company states that "Boeing employees are united by a shared commitment to our values, which serve as the guiding principles for all we do. As we innovate and operate to make the world better, each one of us takes personal accountability for living these values and leading the way forward for our teams, our customers, our stakeholders, and the communities in which we live and work."
